A Mediterranean-style eating pattern (MED-EP) may include moderate red meat intake. However, it is unknown if the pro-atherogenic metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is affected by the amount of red meat consumed with a MED-EP. The results presented are from a secondary, retrospective objective of an investigator-blinded, randomised, crossover, controlled feeding trial (two 5-week interventions separated by a 4-week washout) to determine if a MED-EP with 200 g unprocessed lean red meat/week (MED-CONTROL) reduces circulating TMAO concentrations compared to a MED-EP with 500 g unprocessed lean red meat/week (MED-RED). Participants were seventy-seven women and twelve men (n 39 total) who were either overweight or obese (BMI: mean (30·5) (sem 0·3) kg/m2). Serum samples were obtained following an overnight fast both before (pre) and after (post) each intervention. Fasting serum TMAO, choline, carnitine and betaine concentrations were measured using a targeted liquid chromatography-MS. Data were analysed to assess if (a) TMAO and related metabolites differed by intervention and (b) if changes in TMAO were associated with changes in Framingham 10-year risk score. Serum TMAO was lower post-intervention following MED-CONTROL compared with MED-RED intervention (post-MED-CONTROL 3·1 (sem 0·2) µmv. post-MED-RED 5·0 (sem 0·5) µm, P < 0·001), and decreased following MED-CONTROL (pre- v. post-MED-CONTROL, P = 0·025). Exploratory analysis using mixed model ANCOVA identified a positive association between changes in TMAO and changes in homoeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (P = 0·036). These results suggest that lower amounts of red meat intake lead to lower TMAO concentrations in the context of a MED-EP.

Postglacial climatic conditions were inferred from cores taken from Big Lake in southern British Columbia. Low concentrations of nonarboreal pollen and pigments near the base of the core suggest that initial conditions were cool. Increases in both aquatic and terrestrial production suggest warmer and moister conditions until ∼8500 cal yr B.P. Hyposaline diatom assemblages, increases in nonarboreal pollen, and increased concentrations of pigments suggest the onset of arid conditions from ∼8500 to ∼7500 cal yr B.P. Slightly less arid conditions are inferred from ∼7500 until ∼6660 cal yr B.P. based on the diatoms, small increases and greater variability in biogenic silica and pigments, and higher percentages of arboreal pollen. At ∼6600 cal yr B.P., changes in diatoms, pigments, biogenic silica, and organic matter suggest that Big Lake became fresh, deep, and eutrophic until ∼3600 cal yr B.P., when water levels and nutrients decreased slightly. Our paleoclimatic inferences are similar to pollen-based studies until ∼6600 cal yr B.P. However, unlike these studies, our multiple lines of evidence from Big Lake imply large changes in effective moisture since 6000 cal yr B.P.

Introduced accidentally from South America, deeproot sedge is rapidly expanding in a variety of habitats throughout the southeastern United States. Of particular concern is its rapid expansion, naturalization, and formation of monocultures in Texas coastal prairie, one of the most imperiled temperate ecoregions in North America. The objective of this research was to examine how deeproot sedge responds to prescribed fire, to the herbicide imazapic, and to treatment combinations of both. Combinations of prescribed fire and imazapic treatments and imazapic-only treatments effectively reduced deeproot sedge cover and frequency. However, plots exposed to dormant season fires (with no imazapic) had greater deeproot sedge cover after burn treatments were applied, indicating that coastal prairie management using only dormant season prescribed fire will not work toward reduction or management of this exotic invasive species. Although deeproot sedge cover was often reduced in fire–imazapic treatment combinations, it was still present in treatment plots. Moreover, desirable functional plant groups (i.e., native bunchgrasses) did not respond positively to the fire–imazapic treatments, but in some instances, woody plant coverage increased. Repeated, long-term approaches using integrated and coordinated efforts with multiple treatment options will be necessary to restore community structure to desired compositional levels. Such integrated approaches should be effective in reducing deeproot sedge frequency, cover, and extent to more manageable levels throughout its introduced geographic range.

Research in n-channel field-effect transistors based upon III–V compound semiconductors has been very productive over the last 30 years, with successful applications in a variety of high-speed analog circuits. For digital applications, complementary circuits are desirable to minimize static power consumption. Hence, p-channel transistors are also needed. Unfortunately, hole mobilities are generally much lower than electron mobilities for III–V compounds. This article reviews the recent work to enhance hole mobilities in antimonide-based quantum wells. Epitaxial heterostructures have been grown with the channel material in 1–2% compressive strain. The strain modifies the valence band structure, resulting in hole mobilities as high as 1500 cm2/Vs. The next steps toward an ultra-low-power complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology will include development of a compatible insulator technology and integration of n- and p-channel transistors.

The presence of two species of both cations and anions permits the construction of InAs/AlSb heterostructures with either AlAs- or InSb-like interfaces. InAs/AlSb superlattices with both types of interfaces were grown using migration-enhanced epitaxial techniques. The layer quality and control of interfacial composition were confirmed by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. We demonstrate that high-quality superlattices with both InSb- and AlAs-bonded interfaces can be achieved with appropriate growth temperatures.

We have investigated the relaxation of intentionally mismatched layers of InxAl1−x-As on InP. The layers were grown by MBE and characterized by double-crystal x-ray diffraction (DCXRD) and variable azimuthal angle ellipsometry. Measurements of DCXRD epitaxial layer peak width show high crystalline quality for layers up to five times the Matthews-Blakeslee critical layer thickness. For thicker layers, relaxation occurs with a change in crystal symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic. We attribute this to an asymmetry in misfit dislocation density. Ellipsometry reveals optical anisotropy for mismatched layers in compression, but not in tension.

We applied ellipsometry to characterize layers of InxGa1-xAs grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) InP. Samples with mismatched layers exhibit significant anisotropy in the index of refraction. We explain these observations by the presence of misfit dislocations which form in an asymmetric pattern. This results in asymmetric strain and, via piezo-optical effects, an anisotropy in the optical properties. This effect makes ellipsometry a more sensitive technique than double-crystal x-ray diffraction for detecting misfit dislocations in these heterostructures.
