An asymptotic expression for the reliability of a linearly equated test is developed using normal theory. The reliability is expressed as the product of two terms, the reliability of the test before equating, and an adjustment term. This adjustment term is a function of the sample sizes used to estimate the linear equating transformation. The results of a simulation study indicate close agreement between the theoretical and simulated reliability values for samples greater than 200. Findings demonstrate that samples as small as 300 can be used in linear equating without an appreciable decrease in reliability.
Maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedures for item selection and scoring of multidimensional adaptive tests are presented. A demonstration using simulated response data illustrates that multidimensional adaptive testing (MAT) can provide equal or higher reliabilities with about one-third fewer items than are required by one-dimensional adaptive testing (OAT). Furthermore, holding test-length constant across the MAT and OAT approaches, substantial improvements in reliability can be obtained from multidimensional assessment. A number of issues relating to the operational use of multidimensional adaptive testing are discussed.
Two new methods for improving the measurement precision of a general test factor are proposed and evaluated. One new method provides a multidimensional item response theory estimate obtained from conventional administrations of multiple-choice test items that span general and nuisance dimensions. The other method chooses items adaptively to maximize the precision of the general ability score. Both methods display substantial increases in precision over alternative item selection and scoring procedures. Results suggest that the use of these new testing methods may significantly enhance the prediction of learning and performance in instances where standardized tests are currently used.
Bibliometrics methods have allowed researchers to assess the popularity of brain research through the ever-growing number of brain-related research papers. While many topics of brain research have been covered by previous studies, there is no comprehensive overview of the evolution of brain research and its various specialties and funding practices over a long period of time.
Objective:
This paper aims to (1) determine how brain research has evolved over time in terms of number of papers, (2) countries' relative and absolute positioning in terms of papers and impact, and (3) how those various trends vary by area.
Methods:
Using a list of validated keywords, we extracted brain-related articles and journals indexed in the Web of Science over the 1991–2020 period, for a total of 2,467,708 papers. We used three indicators to perform: number of papers, specialization, and research impact.
Results:
Our results show that over the past 30 years, the number of brain-related papers has grown at a faster pace than science in general, with China being at the forefront of this growth. Different patterns of specialization among countries and funders were also underlined. Finally, the NIH, the European Commission, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the UK Medical Research Council, and the German Research Foundation were found to be among the top funders.
Conclusion:
Despite data-related limitations, our findings provide a large-scope snapshot of the evolution of brain research and its funding, which may be used as a baseline for future studies on these topics.
To assess reasons for noncompliance with COVID-19 vaccination among healthcare workers (HCWs).
Design:
Cohort observational and surveillance study.
Setting:
Sheba Medical Center, a 1,600-bed tertiary-care medical center in Israel.
Participants:
The study included 10,888 HCWs including all employees, students, and volunteers.
Intervention:
The BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine was offered to all HCWs of the hospital. Noncompliance was assessed, and pre-rollout and post-rollout surveys were conducted. Data regarding uptake of the vaccine as well as demographic data and compliance with prior influenza vaccination were collected, and 2 surveys were distributed. The survey before the rollout pertained to the intention to receive the vaccine, and the survey after the rollout pertained to all unvaccinated HCWs regarding causes of hesitancy.
Results:
In the pre-rollout survey, 1,673 (47%) of 3,563 HCWs declared their intent to receive the vaccine. Overall, 8,108 (79%) HCWs received the COVID-19 vaccine within 40 days of rollout. In a multivariate logistic regression model, the factors that were significant predictors of vaccine uptake were male sex, age 40–59 years, occupation (paramedical professionals and doctors), high socioeconomic level, and compliance with flu vaccine. Among 425 unvaccinated HCWs who answered the second survey, the most common cause for hesitancy was the risk during pregnancy (31%).
Conclusions:
Although vaccine uptake among HCWs was higher than expected, relatively low uptake was observed among young women and those from lower socioeconomic levels and educational backgrounds. Concerns regarding vaccine safety during pregnancy were common and more data about vaccine safety, especially during pregnancy, might improve compliance.
Moses Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed is the greatest and most influential work in Jewish philosophy. It directly influenced Aquinas, Spinoza, and Leibniz, and the history of Jewish philosophy takes a decisive turn after the appearance of the Guide, in the wake of its Hebrew translation. Aquinas refers to “Rabbi Moyses” when he develops his own theory of analogical predication, and Spinoza has Maimonides and the Guide squarely in focus in the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, when he presents his own theory of biblical interpretation.
Moses Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed (c. 1190) is the greatest and most influential text in the history of Jewish philosophy. Controversial in its day, the Guide directly influenced Aquinas, Spinoza, and Leibniz, and the history of Jewish philosophy took a decisive turn after its appearance. While there continues to be keen interest in Maimonides and his philosophy, this is the first scholarly collection in English devoted specifically to the Guide. It includes contributions from an international team of scholars addressing the most important philosophical themes that range over the three parts of this sprawling work - including topics in the philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of law, ethics, and political philosophy. There are also essays on the Guide's hermeneutic puzzles, and on its overall structure and philosophical trajectory. The volume will be of interest to philosophers, Judaists, theologians, and medievalists.
Previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that attention control therapy (ACT), targeting aberrant fluctuations of attention toward and away from threats in patients with PTSD, may be effective in reducing symptoms. The current RCT examined whether the use of personalized-trauma stimuli enhances ACT efficacy in patients with PTSD. Additional moderators of treatment outcome were tested on an exploratory basis.
Methods
Sixty patients with PTSD were randomly assigned to either personalized ACT, non-personalized ACT, or a control condition. Changes in symptoms were examined across pre-treatment, post-treatment, and a 3-month follow-up. Attentional interference was examined pre- and post-treatment. Baseline clinical and cognitive indices as well as the time elapsed since the trauma were tested as potential moderators of treatment outcome.
Results
A significant reduction in clinical symptoms was noted for all three conditions with no between-group differences. Attention bias variability decreased following ACT treatment. Personalized ACT was more effective relative to the control condition when less time had elapsed since the trauma. Baseline clinical and cognitive indices did not moderate treatment outcome.
Conclusions
In this RCT of patients with PTSD, ACT was no more effective in reducing PTSD symptoms than a control condition. The data also suggest a potential benefit of personalized ACT for patients who experienced their trauma more recently.
Current guidelines recommend highly specialized care for patients with severe personality disorders (PDs). However, there is little knowledge about how to detect older patients with severe PDs. The aim of the current study was to develop an age-specific tool to detect older adults with severe PDs for highly specialized mental health care.
Design:
In a Delphi study, a tool to detect adults with severe PDs for highly specialized mental health care was adjusted for older adults based on expert opinion. Subsequently, the psychometric properties of the age-specific tool were evaluated.
Setting:
The psychometric part of the study was performed in two Dutch highly specialized centers for PDs in older adults.
Participants:
Patients (N = 90) from two highly specialized centers on PDs in older adults were enrolled.
Measurements:
The age-specific tool was evaluated using clinical judgment as the gold standard.
Results:
The Delphi study resulted in an age-specific tool, consisting of seven items to detect older adults with severe PDs for highly specialized mental health care. Psychometric properties of this tool were evaluated. Receiver operating curve analysis showed that the questionnaire was characterized by sufficient diagnostic accuracy. Internal consistency of the tool was sufficient and inter-rater reliability was moderate.
Conclusions:
An age-specific tool to detect older adults with severe PDs was developed based on expert opinion. Psychometric properties were evaluated showing sufficient diagnostic accuracy. The tool may preliminarily be used in mental health care to detect older adults with severe PDs to refer them to highly specialized care in an early phase.
