Bipolar depression remains difficult to treat, and people often experience ongoing residual symptoms, decreased functioning and impaired quality of life. Adjunctive therapies targeting novel pathways can provide wider treatment options and improve clinical outcomes. Garcinia mangostana Linn. (mangosteen) pericarp has serotonogenic, antioxidant anti-inflammatory and neurogenic properties of relevance to the mechanisms of bipolar depression.
Aims
The current 28-week randomised, multisite, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated mangosteen pericarp extract as an adjunct to treatment-as-usual for treatment of bipolar depression.
Method
This trial was prospectively registered on the Australia New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (no. ACTRN12616000028404). Participants aged 18 years and older with a diagnosis of bipolar I or II and with at least moderate depressive symptoms were eligible for the study. A total of 1016 participants were initially approached or volunteered for the study, of whom 712 did not progress to screening, with an additional 152 screened out. Seventy participants were randomly allocated to mangosteen and 82 to a placebo control. Fifty participants in the mangosteen and 64 participants in the placebo condition completed the treatment period and were analysed.
Results
Results indicated limited support for the primary hypothesis of superior depression symptom reduction following 24 weeks of treatment. Although overall changes in depressive symptoms did not substantially differ between conditions over the course of the trial, we observed significantly greater improvements for the mangosteen condition at 24 weeks, compared with baseline, for mood symptoms, clinical impressions of bipolar severity and social functioning compared with controls. These differences were attenuated at week 28 post-discontinuation assessment.
Conclusions
Adjunctive mangosteen pericarp treatment appeared to have limited efficacy in mood and functional symptoms associated with bipolar disorder, but not with manic symptoms or quality of life, suggesting a novel therapeutic approach that should be verified by replication.
We have examined the nuclear spectra of very massive star-forming galaxies at $z \sim 0$ to understand how they differ from other galaxies with comparable masses, which are typically passive. We selected a sample of 126 nearby massive star-forming galaxies ($\lt100\,\textrm{Mpc}$, $10^{11.3}\,\mathrm{M_\odot} \leq M_\textrm{stellar} \leq 10^{11.7}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$, $1 \,\mathrm{M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}\lt \textrm{SFR} \lt13 \,\mathrm{M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$) from the 2MRS-Bright WXSC catalogue. LEDA morphologies indicate at least 63% of our galaxies are spirals, while visual inspection of Dark Energy Survey images reveals 75% of our galaxies to be spirals with the remainder being lenticular. Of our sample 59 have archival nuclear spectra, which we have modelled and subsequently measured emission lines ([NII]${\lambda 6583}$, H$\alpha{\lambda 6563}$, [OIII]${\lambda 5008}$, and H$\beta{\lambda 4863}$), classifying galaxies as star-forming, LINERs or AGNs. Using a BPT diagram we find $83 \pm 6$% of our galaxies, with sufficient signal-to-noise to measure all 4 emission lines, to be LINERs. Using the [NII]${\lambda 6583}$/H$\alpha{\lambda 6563}$ emission line ratio alone we find that $79 \pm 6$% of the galaxies (46 galaxies) with archival spectra are LINERs, whereas just $\sim 30\%$ of the overall massive galaxy population are LINERs (Belfiore et al. 2016, MNRAS, 461, 3111). Our sample can be considered a local analogue of the Ogle et al. (2019, VizieR Online Data Catalog, p. J/ApJS/243/14; 2016, ApJ, 817, 109) sample of $z \sim 0.22$ massive star-forming galaxies in terms of selection criteria, and we find 64% of their galaxies are LINERs using SDSS spectra. The high frequency of LINER emission in these massive star-forming galaxies indicates that LINER emission in massive galaxies may be linked to the presence of gas that fuels star formation.
Aims: Specialist mood disorder services in the UK are diverse in structure and spread over different clinical-academic centres in the UK. Relationships between these centres are strong but often based on academic projects, with limited opportunities for clinical case discussions. The NIHR Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration, together with the ASCEnD trial team, has set up an online monthly meeting of tertiary mood disorder services: the Mood Disorders Grand Rounds (MDGR). The aims are: 1) to bring together people with expertise and interest from different centres across the UK; 2) to discuss complex and difficult to treat (or interesting) cases; 3) to consider treatment options. The format includes a 20-minute anonymised case presentation by a specialist, covering clinical and thematic aspects, followed by a 40-minute panel discussion focusing on case management, related themes, and relevant research studies. The presentership rotates between centres around the country and encourages a multidisciplinary approach.
Following the first 12 months of MDGR, we distributed a survey to evaluate and develop the meetings.
Methods: An evaluation form was developed and sent to all registered attendees over the course of six months, on a rolling basis. Participants were asked to both rate the effectiveness of various aspects of the programme and to submit suggestions for improvement, including suggestions for future speakers. Questions included both Likert scored items and free text responses.
Results: We received 21 responses (12% of those registered). 75% of respondents had not been to a similar regular collaborative programme previously. 50% of respondents stated that the MDGR had directly influenced their clinical practice, examples being of “Using MAOIs in a case where I hadn’t considered it before” and “identification of a patient with likely autoimmune encephalitis”. The remaining 50% stated that whilst the programme was relevant it had not had a direct result on practice.
Conclusion: A high proportion of respondents reported their clinical practice had been directly influenced by attendance. This suggests the MDGR is fulfilling the stated aim of focusing on clinical discussions and is of value to attenders. The rate of response is low and could be biased to those who found it more useful.

There are approximately 25 major helminth (worm) infections of humans that all, to some extent, have public health significance, but amongst the most common of all human infections are the intestinal nematodes (also called soil-transmitted helminths; STH): the roundworm, Ascaris lumbricoides; the hookworms, Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale; and the whipworm, Trichuris trichiura. The burden of other intestinal nematodes, including Strongyloides stercoralis and Enterobius vermicularis, are ill-defined due to practical difficulties in diagnosing sub-clinical infections. Cestodes are also of major public health and economic importance.
Radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are common in elliptical galaxies, and AGN feedback is one of the possible mechanisms for regulating star formation in massive galaxies. It is unclear if all passive galaxy populations host radio AGNs and if AGN feedback is a plausible mechanism for truncating or regulating star formation in these galaxies. To determine if radio AGNs are common in passive spiral galaxies, we have measured the radio emission of 38 low-redshift passive spiral galaxies using RACS-low at 887.5 MHz and VLASS at 3 GHz. We selected a subset of 2MRS galaxies with negligible WISE 12 $\mu$m emission from warm dust, and spiral morphologies from HyperLeda, RC3, 2MRS and manual inspection. In contrast to comparable early-type galaxies, our sample has no significant radio detections, with radio flux densities below 1 mJy, implying that radio AGNs are rare or non-existent in passive spirals. Using the combined radio images and assuming radio luminosity is proportional to K-band luminosity, we find $\textrm{log}\;L_\nu \lesssim 9.01-0.4\;M_K$. This falls below the radio luminosities of passive elliptical galaxies, implying radio luminosity in passive galaxies is correlated with host galaxy morphology and kinematics.
This chapter introduces curriculum in schools and the relationship between ideology and ideas as factors shaping education curriculum development. This approach stresses that curriculum is both dynamic and contested, and focuses on the development and implementation of the Australian Curriculum to illustrate how curriculum is shaped at the Commonwealth, state/territory and jurisdictional school levels. The chapter also discusses the key learning areas, cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities. The intention is to examine how curriculum can be an empowering vehicle to frame content areas, and inform teaching, learning programs and assessment instruments. Concepts such as the overt and hidden curriculum are examined to better understand the nature of school curriculum. Further, there is a recognition that curriculum must be interpreted and contextualised so that it meets the needs of learners at different levels and in different ways. Finally, the notion of teachers as curriculum builders and enactors is a central concept in this chapter.
This study characterises the radio luminosity functions (RLFs) for star forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) using statistical redshift estimation in the absence of comprehensive spectroscopic data. Sensitive radio surveys over large areas detect many sources with faint optical and infrared counterparts, for which redshifts and spectra are unavailable. This challenges our attempt to understand the population of radio sources. Statistical tools are often used to model parameters (such as redshift) as an alternative to observational data. Using the data from GAMA G23 and EMU early science observations, we explore simple statistical techniques to estimate the redshifts in order to measure the RLFs of the G23 radio sources as a whole and for SFGs and AGN separately. Redshifts and AGN/SFG classifications are assigned statistically for those radio sources without spectroscopic data. The calculated RLFs are compared with existing studies, and the results suggest that the RLFs match remarkably well for low redshift galaxies with an optical counterpart. We use a more realistic high redshift distribution to model the redshifts of (most likely) high redshift radio sources and find that the LFs from our approach match well with measured LFs. We also look at strategies to compare the RLFs of radio sources without an optical counterpart to existing studies.
We present the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey conducted with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). EMU aims to deliver the touchstone radio atlas of the southern hemisphere. We introduce EMU and review its science drivers and key science goals, updated and tailored to the current ASKAP five-year survey plan. The development of the survey strategy and planned sky coverage is presented, along with the operational aspects of the survey and associated data analysis, together with a selection of diagnostics demonstrating the imaging quality and data characteristics. We give a general description of the value-added data pipeline and data products before concluding with a discussion of links to other surveys and projects and an outline of EMU’s legacy value.
