Objective
To examine the use of vitamin D supplements during infancy among the participants in an international infant feeding trial.
DesignLongitudinal study.
SettingInformation about vitamin D supplementation was collected through a validated FFQ at the age of 2 weeks and monthly between the ages of 1 month and 6 months.
SubjectsInfants (n 2159) with a biological family member affected by type 1 diabetes and with increased human leucocyte antigen-conferred susceptibility to type 1 diabetes from twelve European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia.
ResultsDaily use of vitamin D supplements was common during the first 6 months of life in Northern and Central Europe (>80 % of the infants), with somewhat lower rates observed in Southern Europe (>60 %). In Canada, vitamin D supplementation was more common among exclusively breast-fed than other infants (e.g. 71 % v. 44 % at 6 months of age). Less than 2 % of infants in the USA and Australia received any vitamin D supplementation. Higher gestational age, older maternal age and longer maternal education were study-wide associated with greater use of vitamin D supplements.
ConclusionsMost of the infants received vitamin D supplements during the first 6 months of life in the European countries, whereas in Canada only half and in the USA and Australia very few were given supplementation.

We use mitochondrial DNA sequences to infer the origin and phylogenetic position of the Lesser Antillean species of the pitviper genus Bothrops, B. caribbaeus and B. lanceolatus. The two species form a monophyletic group, which in turn forms the sister clade to the Bothrops asper-atrox complex. High levels of sequence divergence among the Caribbean species, and between them and the nearest mainland relatives, suggest a relatively ancient origin of these snakes. The hypothesis that the Lesser Antillean Bothrops are the result of a recent colonisation event from within the South American B. atrox complex is rejected, as is the hypothesis that they were introduced to their island habitats by aboriginal humans. The high level of morphological apomorphy displayed by B. lanceolatus suggests a stepping-stone colonisation, St. Lucia being colonised first and then Martinique from St. Lucia. The medical implications of these findings are discussed: a recent case of envenoming from Saint Lucia suggests that Bothrops caribbaeus causes the same thrombotic syndrome of envenoming as B. lanceolatus.

Tumours and pseudotumorous lesions originating from the synovial membrane of the temporomandibular joint are rare. We report a series of six cases of such disorders. There were two cases of synovial chondromatosis, two of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease, one nodular synovitis and one synovial sarcoma. Three patients were female and three were male. Their ages ranged from 36 to 70 years. All had atypical clinical and radiographical presentation. The prevalence, clinical and radiographical findings and pathological features of each disease entity are discussed and a review of the literature is made concerning all tumours and pseudotumours arising from the temporomandibular joint.

Several methods of synthesizing molybdenum nitride or oxynitride fine powders are presented.
We have prepared a γ-Mo2N type oxynitride phase by reacting ammonia with MoO3. The surface area and morphology of the oxynitride powders depend on the synthesis conditions. Characterization of the solids by elemental analysis, X-ray and neutron diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis shows dramatic modification of the stoichiometry of conventional Mo2N nitride. Aging at room temperature under air results in decreasing the material surface area. The initial surface area can be recovered be fine tuning of experimental conditions. MoCl5 and Ca3N2 are reacted in a molten CaCl2 medium leading to a new Mo2N structure type.
The reaction between molybdenum sulfide and NH3 produces two different phases depending on the reaction conditions. They are structurally related to δ-MoN.
