Introduction
The main learning experience from carrying out field problem solving projects comes from the actual working in the field. Nonetheless, it is good to prepare students for this by sharing with them the methodology for this fieldwork as given in this book, and by doing some exercises.
An important exercise is the drawing up of a sound project proposal, which should contain, among other things, a problem definition, the deliverables of the project and a design of the approach for the next step in the problem solving, namely problem analysis and diagnosis. This project proposal is made when the student is not yet familiar with this type of fieldwork, nor with the company and the problem in question. Therefore, this is a difficult and risky part of his/her project. Moreover, in the event that the project founders, the reasons for this can often be traced back to a weak project proposal. Accordingly, there are many reasons for helping the student in this crucial first activity.
Section 14.2 gives a possible formulation for the assignment of making a project proposal with some hints for making a sound one, and Section 14.3 gives the four cases.
