An instance of a size-n stable marriage problem involves n men and n women, each individually ranking all members of opposite sex in order of preference as a potential marriage partner. A complete matching, a set of n marriages, is called stable if no unmatched man and woman prefer each other to their partners in the matching. It is known that, for every instance of marriage partner preferences, there exists at least one stable matching, and that there are instances with exponentially many stable matchings. Our focus is on a random instance chosen uniformly from among all (n!)2n possible instances. The second author had proved that the expected number of stable marriages is of order nlnn, while its likely value is of order n1/2−o(1) at least. In this paper the second moment of that number is shown to be of order (nlnn)2. The combination of the two moment estimates implies that the fraction of problem instances with roughly cnlnn solutions is at least 0.84. Whether this fraction is asymptotic to 1 remains an open question.

We model a problem about networks built from wireless devices using identifying and locating–dominating codes in unit disk graphs. It is known that minimizing the size of an identifying code is -complete even for bipartite graphs. First, we improve this result by showing that the problem remains -complete for bipartite planar unit disk graphs. Then, we address the question of the existence of an identifying code for random unit disk graphs. We derive the probability that there exists an identifying code as a function of the radius of the disks, and we find that for all interesting ranges of r this probability is bounded away from one. The results obtained are in sharp contrast to those concerning random graphs in the Erdős–Rényi model. Another well-studied class of codes is that of locating–dominating codes, which are less demanding than identifying codes. A locating–dominating code always exists, but minimizing its size is still -complete in general. We extend this result to our setting by showing that this question remains -complete for arbitrary planar unit disk graphs. Finally, we study the minimum size of such a code in random unit disk graphs, and we prove that with probability tending to one, it is of size (n/r)2/3+o(1) if r ≤ /2−ϵ is chosen such that nr2 → ∞, and of size n1+o(1) if nr2 ≪ lnn.

Systems of polynomial equations over the complex or real numbers can be used to model combinatorial problems. In this way, a combinatorial problem is feasible (e.g., a graph is 3-colourable, Hamiltonian, etc.) if and only if a related system of polynomial equations has a solution.

For an infeasible polynomial system, the (complex) Hilbert Nullstellensatz gives a certificate that the associated combinatorial problem is infeasible. Thus, unless P = NP, there must exist an infinite sequence of infeasible instances of each hard combinatorial problem for which the minimum degree of a Hilbert Nullstellensatz certificate of the associated polynomial system grows.

In the first part of the paper, we show that the minimum degree of a Nullstellensatz certificate for the non-existence of a stable set of size greater than the stability number of the graph is the stability number of the graph. Moreover, such a certificate contains at least one term per stable set of G. In contrast, for non-3-colourability, we proved that the minimum degree of a Nullstellensatz certificate is at least four. Our efforts so far have only yielded graphs with Nullstellensatz certificates of precisely that degree.

In the second part of this paper, for the purpose of computation, we construct new polynomial encodings for the problems of finding in a graph its longest cycle, the largest planar subgraph, the edge-chromatic number, or the largest k-colourable subgraph. We include some applications to graph theory.

We study relaxations of proper two-colourings, such that the order of the induced monochromatic components in one (or both) of the colour classes is bounded by a constant. A colouring of a graph G is called (C1, C2)-relaxed if every monochromatic component induced by vertices of the first (second) colour is of order at most C1 (C2, resp.). We prove that the decision problem ‘Is there a (1, C)-relaxed colouring of a given graph G of maximum degree 3?’ exhibits a hardness jump in the component order C. In other words, there exists an integer f(3) such that the decision problem is NP-hard for every 2 ≤ C < f(3), while every graph of maximum degree 3 is (1, f(3))-relaxed colourable. We also show f(3) ≤ 22 by way of a quasilinear time algorithm, which finds a (1, 22)-relaxed colouring of any graph of maximum degree 3. Both the bound on f(3) and the running time greatly improve earlier results. We also study the symmetric version, that is, when C1 = C2, of the relaxed colouring problem and make the first steps towards establishing a similar hardness jump.

A sequence X = {xi}ni=1 over an alphabet containing t symbols is t-universal if every permutation of those symbols is contained as a subsequence. Kleitman and Kwiatkowski showed that the minimum length of a t-universal sequence is (1 − o(1))t2. In this note we address a related Ramsey-type problem. We say that an r-colouring χ of the sequence X is canonical if χ(xi) = χ(xj) whenever xi = xj. We prove that for any fixedt the length of the shortest sequence over an alphabet of size t, which has the property that every r-colouring of its entries contains a t-universal and canonically coloured subsequence, is at most . This is best possible up to a multiplicative constant c independent of r.

An exact formula for the expected length of the minimum spanning tree of a connected graph, with independent and identical edge distribution, is given, which generalizes Steele's formula in the uniform case. For a complete graph, the difference of expected lengths between exponential distribution, with rate one, and uniform distribution on the interval (0, 1) is shown to be positive and of rate ζ(3)/n. For wheel graphs, precise values of expected lengths are given via calculations of the associated Tutte polynomials.

We show that the complete list of regular excluded minors for the class of signed-graphic matroids is M*(G1),. . . , M*(G29), R15, R16. Here G1,. . . , G29 are the vertically 2-connected excluded minors for the class of projective-planar graphs and R15 and R16 are two regular matroids that we will define in the article.

We give a very general sufficient condition for a one-parameter family of curves not to have n members with ‘too many’ (i.e., a near-quadratic number of) triple points of intersections. As a special case, a combinatorial distinction between straight lines and unit circles will be shown. (Actually, this is more than just a simple application; originally this motivated our results.)

Given ω ≥ 1, let be the graph with vertex set in which two vertices are joined if they agree in one coordinate and differ by at most ω in the other. (Thus is precisely .) Let pc(ω) be the critical probability for site percolation on . Extending recent results of Frieze, Kleinberg, Ravi and Debany, we show that limω→∞ωpc(ω)=log(3/2). We also prove analogues of this result for the n-by-n grid and in higher dimensions, the latter involving interesting connections to Gilbert's continuum percolation model. To prove our results, we explore the component of the origin in a certain non-standard way, and show that this exploration is well approximated by a certain branching random walk.

A minor-closed class of graphs is addable if each excluded minor is 2-connected. We see that such a class of labelled graphs has smooth growth; and, for the random graph Rn sampled uniformly from the n-vertex graphs in , the fragment not in the giant component asymptotically has a simple ‘Boltzmann Poisson distribution’. In particular, as n → ∞ the probability that Rn is connected tends to 1/A(ρ), where A(x) is the exponential generating function for and ρ is its radius of convergence.

Let k3reg(n, d) be the minimum number of triangles in d-regular graphs with n vertices. We find the exact value of k3reg(n, d) for d between and n/2. In addition, we identify the structure of the extremal graphs.

Stein's method of exchangeable pairs is examined through five examples in relation to Poisson and normal distribution approximation. In particular, in the case where the exchangeable pair is constructed from a reversible Markov chain, we analyse how modifying the step size of the chain in a natural way affects the error term in the approximation acquired through Stein's method. It has been noted for the normal approximation that smaller step sizes may yield better bounds, and we obtain the first rigorous results that verify this intuition. For the examples associated to the normal distribution, the bound on the error is expressed in terms of the spectrum of the underlying chain, a characteristic of the chain related to convergence rates. The Poisson approximation using exchangeable pairs is less studied than the normal, but in the examples presented here the same principles hold.

We provide a characterization of upper locally distributive lattices (ULD-lattices) in terms of edge colourings of their cover graphs. In many instances where a set of combinatorial objects carries the order structure of a lattice, this characterization yields a slick proof of distributivity or UL-distributivity. This is exemplified by proving a distributive lattice structure on Δ-bonds with invariant circular flow-difference. This instance generalizes several previously studied lattice structures, in particular, c-orientations (Propp), α-orientations of planar graphs (Felsner, resp. de Mendez) and planar flows (Khuller, Naor and Klein). The characterization also applies to other instances, e.g., to chip-firing games.

A family of subsets of {1, . . ., n} is called a j-junta if there exists J ⊆ {1, . . ., n}, with |J| = j, such that the membership of a set S in depends only on S ∩ J.

In this paper we provide a simple description of intersecting families of sets. Let n and k be positive integers with k < n/2, and let be a family of pairwise intersecting subsets of {1, . . ., n}, all of size k. We show that such a family is essentially contained in a j-junta , where j does not depend on n but only on the ratio k/n and on the interpretation of ‘essentially’.

When k = o(n) we prove that every intersecting family of k-sets is almost contained in a dictatorship, a 1-junta (which by the Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem is a maximal intersecting family): for any such intersecting family there exists an element i ∈ {1, . . ., n} such that the number of sets in that do not contain i is of order (which is approximately times the size of a maximal intersecting family).

Our methods combine traditional combinatorics with results stemming from the theory of Boolean functions and discrete Fourier analysis.

The U-polynomial, the polychromate and the symmetric function generalization of the Tutte polynomial, due to Stanley, are known to be equivalent in the sense that the coefficients of any one of them can be obtained as a function of the coefficients of any other. The definition of each of these functions suggests a natural way in which to strengthen them, which also captures Tutte's universal V-function as a specialization. We show that the equivalence remains true for the strong functions, thus answering a question raised by Dominic Welsh.

It is shown that the size of a subgraph of Qn without a cycle of length 14 is of order o(|E(Qn)|).

A d-simplex is a collection of d + 1 sets such that every d of them has non-empty intersection and the intersection of all of them is empty. Fix k ≥ d + 2 ≥ 3 and let be a family of k-element subsets of an n-element set that contains no d-simplex. We prove that if , then there is a vertex x of such that the number of sets in omitting x is o(nk−1) (here o(1)→ 0 and n → ∞). A similar result when n/k is bounded from above was recently proved in [10].

Our main result is actually stronger, and implies that if for any ϵ < 0 and n sufficiently large, then contains d + 2 sets A, A1, . . . ,Ad+1 such that the Ais form a d-simplex, and A contains an element of ∩j≠iAj for each i. This generalizes, in asymptotic form, a recent result of Vestraëte and the first author [18], who proved it for d = 1, ϵ = 0 and n ≥ 2k.

Jim Propp's rotor–router model is a deterministic analogue of a random walk on a graph. Instead of distributing chips randomly, each vertex serves its neighbours in a fixed order. We analyse the difference between the Propp machine and random walk on the infinite two-dimensional grid. It is known that, apart from a technicality, independent of the starting configuration, at each time the number of chips on each vertex in the Propp model deviates from the expected number of chips in the random walk model by at most a constant. We show that this constant is approximately 7.8 if all vertices serve their neighbours in clockwise or order, and 7.3 otherwise. This result in particular shows that the order in which the neighbours are served makes a difference. Our analysis also reveals a number of further unexpected properties of the two-dimensional Propp machine.
