Summary

Members excluded in 1654

Six Members were specifically excluded under Articles 14 and 17 of the Instrument of Government, at least initially, and another three probably joined them. The latter are indicated by ‘?’. This list is based on the biographies in these volumes, modifying the list in Little and Smith, Cromwellian Protectorate, 81-3.

Thomas Adams

?Thomas Grey, Lord Grey of Groby

George Glapthorne

?Samuel Hyland

John Langham

?Thomas Latham

Sir John Price

Sir Richard Temple

John Wildman

Members excluded in 1656

This list is derived from five different contemporary sources, as tabulated in appendix 1 of Little and Smith, Cromwellian Protectorate, 302-5.

Five men appear in these sources who were not in fact Members, and whose biographies are therefore not included in these volumes. Francis Allanson was double-returned for Leeds but did not sit; Henry Worth, a Devon j.p., may have stood for the county; and Edward Le Neve may be a misreading of Edward Wenieve, who sat for Suffolk and was excluded. Richard Hinton and Richard Wyren have not been identified. It is plausible that these men were excluded pre-emptively by the protectorate council, on misleading information sent in by the major-generals and their agents.
