The History of Parliament: The House of Commons 1640-1660 [Volume I] Published online by Cambridge University Press: 30 May 2023
This list includes those who held field rank (captain and above) between April 1640 and April 1660. The rank given is the highest attained by that Member during the period. All officers served in Parliament’s armies except those marked ‘king’s’ (pre-1642 king’s army), ‘roy.’ (royalist), ‘Sc.’ (Scottish covenanting army) or ‘Ire.’ (Protestant forces in Ireland before Aug. 1649). The list does not mention militia commissions, governorships of garrisons, purely administrative roles or the commissions of the major-generals of 1655-6 and their subordinates. Fuller details of service may be found in the biographies.
