Schoenaster carterensis new species, is an asteroid-like ophiuroid (Echinodermata) from Upper Mississippian (Chesterian) shallow-water carbonates in the Ramey Creek Member of the Slade Formation in northeastern Kentucky. First described in the 1860s from Lower and Middle Mississippian rocks, Schoenaster Meek and Worthen, 1860 is not a well-known fossil genus, but the 39 specimens in this collection permitted further definition of the genus and extended its range by ca. 17 Ma into Late Mississippian (Chesterian) time. The number of specimens also permitted differentiation of growth stages based on average arm length and showed that arm length, disk perimeter, and disk area are interrelated in statistically significant ways. Although replaced by chert, the specimens are nearly intact due to rapid burial as rare constituents in habitat communities distributed among four once-contiguous habitats, including shoal, shoal margin, transitional, and basinal. Most of the ophiuroids were concentrated on firm grounds or hardgrounds in shoal and transitional environments, concentrations that probably reflect substratum stability and the ability to support the ophiuroid's generalist feeding strategy. Many fossil ophiuroid species are known from only a few specimens, severely limiting interpretations about their detailed taxonomy, individual variation, and ecology. In contrast, the greater number of specimens and extensive knowledge of geologic occurrence in this study permitted detailed interpretations regarding the taxonomic, intraspecific, and ecologic attributes of this species, which might be useful in the study of other fossil ophiuroids.

Fenac [(2,3,6-trichlorophenyl)acetic acid] and its sodium salt were incorporated in polyethylene matrices under varied conditions to afford a series of herbicide-polyethylene formulations. Diffusion within the matrix determined the rates at which the herbicides were released from the formulations into water. Release rates of the herbicides were altered significantly if (a) the formulation curing conditions were varied, (b) the initial amount of herbicide in the matrix was varied, (c) the solubility of the herbicide was changed, or (d) if an additive was used. The results indicate that herbicide diffuses from the matrix through water-filled cracks and capillary channels.

We analyzed birth order differences in means and variances of height and body mass index (BMI) in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins from infancy to old age. The data were derived from the international CODATwins database. The total number of height and BMI measures from 0.5 to 79.5 years of age was 397,466. As expected, first-born twins had greater birth weight than second-born twins. With respect to height, first-born twins were slightly taller than second-born twins in childhood. After adjusting the results for birth weight, the birth order differences decreased and were no longer statistically significant. First-born twins had greater BMI than the second-born twins over childhood and adolescence. After adjusting the results for birth weight, birth order was still associated with BMI until 12 years of age. No interaction effect between birth order and zygosity was found. Only limited evidence was found that birth order influenced variances of height or BMI. The results were similar among boys and girls and also in MZ and DZ twins. Overall, the differences in height and BMI between first- and second-born twins were modest even in early childhood, while adjustment for birth weight reduced the birth order differences but did not remove them for BMI.

This study examined cross-validation and test-retest reliability of questions and questionnaire indices commonly used for twin zygosity classification. Mothers of 58 monozygotic (MZ) and 52 dizygotic (DZ) same sex twin pairs were interviewed by telephone to answer questions regarding the similarity of their twins (mean age = 14.6 ± 2.8 years). A logistic regression equation correctly classified 91% of both MZ and DZ twin pairs in our sample using 7 of the 12 zygosity questions. The internal consistency for the total questionnaire (Cronbach's alpha) was 0.88. The median two month temporal stability estimate for the individual questions was r = .56 and r = .79 for the test total. For the cross-validation, zygosity classification indices taken from 9 previous studies were applied to our sample and compared to classification according to DNA microsatellite analyses (agreement range = 44 to 100%). The accuracy of the classification indices was significantly lower than the original studies for 62% of the comparisons. If zygosity determination with DNA markers or blood group typing for all subjects is not feasible, rather than using classification indices based on other studies, an optimal classification scheme can be achieved by using a zygosity questionnaire of which the reliability and validity of the questions is established in a random subsample of the same twin cohort.

A detailed comparative analysis of archaeal RNase P RNA structure and a comparison of the resulting structural information with that of the bacterial RNA reveals that the archaeal RNase P RNAs are strikingly similar to those of Bacteria. The differences between the secondary structure models of archaeal and bacterial RNase P RNA have largely disappeared, and even variation in the sequence and structure of the RNAs are similar in extent and type. The structure of the cruciform (P7–11) has been reevaluated on the basis of a total of 321 bacterial and archaeal sequences, leading to a model for the structure of this region of the RNA that includes an extension to P11 that consistently organizes the cruciform and adjacent highly-conserved sequences.

Organo-soluble rigid-rod and segmented rigid-rod polyimides and their copolyimides exhibit isotropic solutions in hot m-cresol, but form gels upon cooling. A lyotropic liquid crystal phase is observed below the gel/sol transition. Mechanical gel formation is caused by liquid-liquid phase separation, while the liquid crystal phase may be formed through a nucleation process after gelation. High performance fibers can be spun from the hot isotropic solutions using a dry-jet wet spinning method. After the fibers are drawn at high temperatures, they display tensile strength higher than 3.2 GPa and an initial modulus higher than 130 GPa. In particular, the fibers retain relatively high mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Solution casted films exhibit very low thermal expansion coefficients and dielectric constants. Their structure, morphology and property relationships will also be discussed.

Selective removal of molecular moieties from plasma of patients can result in tumor regression, auto-antibody clearance, and immune modulation. The ProsorbaR Column consists of highly purified protein A isolated from Staphylococcus and covalently linked to inert silica housed in a polycarbonate device. Protein A acts as an immunoadsorbent to selectively remove immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgG containing CIC via specific binding to the Fc fragment of IgG. Columns were sterile, disposable devices that remove approximately one gram of IgG from plasma per treatment. As part of a multicenter clinical trial, 8 of 22 (36%) end stage breast cancer patients exhibited objective antitumor responses. Treatment of 24 patients with immune thrombocytopenia resulted in 14 (58%) of patients having objective increases in platelet counts and clearance or significant reduction of anti-platelet antibody. The mechanism of action of this device is unknown at present but may be selective removal of IgG and CIC, and activation of factors such as the complement system which results in enhanced reticuloendothelial system (RES) clearance of CIC. In addition, immune modulation may result due to the stimulation of anti-idiotypic antibodies and selective clonal deletion of auto-antibody producing lymphocyte sub-populations.

In the summer of 1939, President Charles G. Haines set up this committee and instructed it to study broadly the contribution which political scientists are making to government, their relations with public officials, and how these relations might be made closer and more effective. The problem assigned to the committee is one of great importance to the future of political science. The challenge to political scientists to make an effective contribution to the improvement of government processes and institutions was never so real and so great as it is today. The preservation of democratic institutions, in the long run, will depend in large measure upon scientific study and research, and intelligent, imaginative, and constructive consideration of governmental problems. If political scientists are not making their full contribution to the development and improvement of government—and we believe they are not—it is time to stop and take stock, and to set about purposefully to attune political science to the needs of modern society. We are not unmindful of the very great contribution which all social sciences may make, but we believe that the responsibility of the political scientist is especially great.
