Telerehabilitation and robotics, either traditional rigid or soft, have been extensively studied and used to improve hand functionality after a stroke. However, a limited number of devices combined these two technologies to such a level of maturity that was possible to use them at the patients’ home, unsupervised. Here we present a novel investigation that demonstrates the feasibility of a system that integrates a soft inflatable robotic glove, a cloud-connected software interface, and a telerehabilitation therapy. Ten chronic moderate-to-severe stroke survivors independently used the system at their home for 4 weeks, following a software-led therapy and being in touch with occupational therapists. Data from the therapy, including automatic assessments by the robot, were available to the occupational therapists in real-time, thanks to the cloud-connected capability of the system. The participants used the system intensively (about five times more movements per session than the standard care) for a total of more than 8 hr of therapy on average. We were able to observe improvements in standard clinical metrics (FMA +3.9 ± 4.0, p < .05, COPM-P + 2.5 ± 1.3, p < .05, COPM-S + 2.6 ± 1.9, p < .05, MAL-AOU +6.6 ± 6.5, p < .05) and range of motion (+88%) at the end of the intervention. Despite being small, these improvements sustained at follow-up, 2 weeks after the end of the therapy. These promising results pave the way toward further investigation for the deployment of combined soft robotic/telerehabilitive systems at-home for autonomous usage for stroke rehabilitation.

Introduction:
Despite the critical role that quantitative scientists play in biomedical research, graduate programs in quantitative fields often focus on technical and methodological skills, not on collaborative and leadership skills. In this study, we evaluate the importance of team science skills among collaborative biostatisticians for the purpose of identifying training opportunities to build a skilled workforce of quantitative team scientists.
Methods:Our workgroup described 16 essential skills for collaborative biostatisticians. Collaborative biostatisticians were surveyed to assess the relative importance of these skills in their current work. The importance of each skill is summarized overall and compared across career stages, highest degrees earned, and job sectors.
Results:Survey respondents were 343 collaborative biostatisticians spanning career stages (early: 24.2%, mid: 33.8%, late: 42.0%) and job sectors (academia: 69.4%, industry: 22.2%, government: 4.4%, self-employed: 4.1%). All 16 skills were rated as at least somewhat important by > 89.0% of respondents. Significant heterogeneity in importance by career stage and by highest degree earned was identified for several skills. Two skills (“regulatory requirements” and “databases, data sources, and data collection tools”) were more likely to be rated as absolutely essential by those working in industry (36.5%, 65.8%, respectively) than by those in academia (19.6%, 51.3%, respectively). Three additional skills were identified as important by survey respondents, for a total of 19 collaborative skills.
Conclusions:We identified 19 team science skills that are important to the work of collaborative biostatisticians, laying the groundwork for enhancing graduate programs and establishing effective on-the-job training initiatives to meet workforce needs.

Objective:
The paediatric post-cardiac catheterisation Wrap (Wrap), an innovative medical safety device, swaddles young paediatric patients in a supine position aiding in immobilisation post-cardiac catheterisation. This pilot study investigated the feasibility and safety of using the Wrap on young paediatric patients during their bed rest period following cardiac catheterisation with femoral access.
Setting:Boston Children’s Hospital Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
Participants:20 patients, ages 1–5 years and weighing 3–25 kg.
Methods:Investigator-developed tools used to collect data included the Demographic and Outcome Measures Data Tool, the Parent/Caregiver Satisfaction, and Provider Ease of Use tools. They measured:
-
1. The feasibility of using the Wrap
-
2. Wrap ease of use from the nurse providers’ perspective
-
3. Parent satisfaction related to the Wrap
-
4. Frequency of Wrap non-bleeding-related adverse events
-
5. Frequency of rebleeding at femoral groin access sites
Results:The Wrap was feasible and safe; increased nurse provider satisfaction by allowing visualisation of the groin access sites while minimising the need for hands-on care; and increased parent satisfaction by allowing parents to hold and provide comfort while their child was on bed rest.
Implications for Research:The Wrap is a safe alternative to the current practice of swaddling with a bath blanket. Further studies are warranted to assess the Wrap’s effectiveness in reducing the incidence of rebleeding events in the post-cardiac catheterisation period and explore clinical use outside of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

We report on the incorporation of molybdenum into tungsten oxide by co-sputtering and its effect on solar-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Our study shows that Mo incorporation in the bulk of the film (WO3:Mo) results in poor PEC performance when compared with pure WO3, most likely due to defects that trap photo-generated charge carriers. However, when a WO3:Mo/WO3 bilayer electrode is used, a 20% increase of the photocurrent density at 1.6 V versus saturated calomel reference electrode is observed compared with pure WO3. Morphological and microstructural analysis of the WO3:Mo/WO3 bilayer structure reveals that it is formed by coherent growth of the WO3:Mo top layer on the WO3 bottom layer. This effect allows an optimization of the electronic surface structure of the electrode while maintaining good crystallographic properties in the bulk.

We report a new integration approach to produce arrays of ZnO microcrystals for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. Demonstrated applications are n-ZnO/p-GaN heterojunction LEDs and photovoltaic cells. The integration process uses an oxygen plasma treatment in combination with a photoresist pattern on Magnesium doped GaN substrates to define a narrow sub-100nm width nucleation region. ZnO is synthesized in the defined areas by a hydrothermal technique using zinc acetate and hexamethylenetetramine precursors. Nucleation is followed by lateral epitaxial overgrowth producing single crystal disks of ZnO. The process provides control over the dimension and location of the ZnO crystals. The quality of the patterned ZnO is high; the commonly observed defect related emission in the electroluminescence spectra is suppressed and a single near-band-edge UV peak is observed. Transfer printing of the ZnO microcrystals onto a flexible substrate is also demonstrated in the context of transparent flexible electronics.

This article reports forward and reverse biased emission in vertical ZnO nanowire/p-GaN heterojunction light emitting diodes (LEDs) grown out of solution on Mg-doped p-GaN films. The electroluminescence spectra under forward and reverse bias are distinctly different. Forward bias showed two peaks centered around 390 nm and 585 nm, while reverse bias showed a single peak at 510 nm. Analysis of the current-voltage characteristics and electroluminescence spectra is presented to determine the transport mechanism and location of electron hole recombination. Reverse bias transport and luminescence are attributed to hot-hole injection from the ZnO nanowires into the GaN film through tunneling breakdown. Forward bias transport and luminescence are attributed to hole injection from the GaN into the ZnO and recombination at defect states inside the ZnO yielding distinct color variations between individual wires. Major resistive losses occurred in the GaN lateral thin film connecting to the vertical ZnO nanowires.
