‘Because I’m not musical’: A critical case study of music education training for pre-service generalist primary teachers in Australia

The literature concerning pre-service training in music education for generalist primary or elementary school teachers reveals a long-standing problem for teacher educators: low or poor self-efficacy concerning the teaching of classroom music. Concurrently, a critical examination of training programmes has less often featured, with only limited discussion of digital approaches to classroom music-making constituting the focus of empirical research. Through a focused case study in one Australian university, 136 pre-service teachers participated in a face-to-face module of interactive music education which culminated in a peer-directed collaborative digital music-making project. Pre- and post-surveys were implemented with shifts in pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy measured according to Bandura’s self-efficacy scales. Legitimation Code Theory from the sociology of education then served as an overarching theoretical lens through which to appraise the findings. Despite an enduring self-concept as ‘non-musicians’, the results highlight positive shifts in self-efficacy through the utilisation of peer-directed digital music-making tasks, with implications for teacher training programmes more broadly situated.

An institution-wide faculty mentoring program at an academic health center with 6-year prospective outcome data

Background:
There is discontent and turnover among faculty at US academic health centers because of the challenges in balancing clinical, research, teaching, and work–life responsibilities in the current healthcare environment. One potential strategy to improve faculty satisfaction and limit turnover is through faculty mentoring programs.
Methods:A Mentor Leadership Council was formed to design and implement an institution-wide faculty mentoring program across all colleges at an academic health center. The authors conducted an experimental study of the impact of the mentoring program using pre-intervention (2011) and 6-year (2017) post-intervention faculty surveys that measured the long-term effectiveness of the program.
Results:The percent of faculty who responded to the surveys was 45.9% (656/1428) in 2011 and 40.2% (706/1756) in 2017. For faculty below the rank of full professor, percent of faculty with a mentor (45.3% vs. 67.1%, P < 0.001), familiarity with promotion criteria (81.7% vs. 90.0%, P = 0.001), and satisfaction with department’s support of career (75.6% vs. 84.7%, P = 0.002) improved. The percent of full professors serving as mentors also increased from 50.3% in 2011 to 68.0% in 2017 (P = 0.002). However, the percent of non-retiring faculty considering leaving the institution over the next 2 years increased from 18.8% in 2011 to 24.3% in 2017 (P = 0.02).
Conclusions:Implementation of an institution-wide faculty mentoring program significantly improved metrics of career development and faculty satisfaction but was not associated with a reduction in the percent of faculty considering leaving the institution. This suggests the need for additional efforts to identify and limit factors driving faculty turnover.

Introduction
A core challenge of a multidisciplinary and multi-organizational translational research enterprise such as a Clinical and Translational Research Award (CTSA) is coordinating and integrating the work of individuals, workgroups, and organizations accustomed to working independently and autonomously. Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) undertook and studied a multifacted intervention to address this challenge and to create a culture of systems thinking, process awareness, responsive to others' needs, and shared decision-making.
InterventionThe intervention, based on relational coordination, included 1) relational interventions, in three staff retreats and a diagnostic survey to provide feedback on the current quality of relational coordination, and 2) structural interventions, in the launching of five new cross-functional teams with regular meeting structures.
MethodsA mixed-methods evaluation yielded quantitative data via two types of team surveys and qualitative data via interviews and meeting observations.
ResultsThe findings suggest that interventions to improve relational coordination are feasible for CTSAs, including good fidelity to the model and staff/physician engagement. Survey and interview data suggest model improvements in coordination and alignment. Further research about their optimal design is warranted.
Toward high volume solution based roll-to-roll processing of OLEDs

The large volume production of flexible electronics by solution based roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing technologies is a promising upscaling strategy for the organic electronics industry. Typical optoelectronic devices like organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) consist of a complex stack of functional layers. Solution deposition of these structures eliminates the need for expensive vacuum processing. This contribution presents approaches for solution based R2R production methods of functional OLED layers on flexible polymer substrates. The development of a R2R line with two slot-die coating stations is discussed which can deposit two uniform layers consecutively in a single run (“tandem coating”) at web speeds up to 30 m/min. Furthermore, it offers the unique feature that there is no contact between the rollers and the top side of the substrate where the functional coating is deposited. Thereby, an important source of particle contamination and other damage to the device is eliminated. In addition to continuous deposition, stripe and intermittent coating techniques have been developed, allowing the production of patterned layers. Finally, examples will be shown of OLEDs where two functional materials are deposited by R2R processing from solution.

Introduction
Deemed the “breakthrough of the year” by Science magazine in 2002, research into the biology of small RNA regulation has grown exponentially in recent years; however, the field is relatively nascent in terms of identifying and characterizing the universe of miRNAs and their expression in various biological states. According to the miRNA registry (release 6.0, www.sanger.ac.uk/Software/Rfam/mirna/index.shtml); of the 319 predicted human miRNAs the expressions of 234 have been experimentally verified by Northern blot, cloning, or microarray. Further, the total number of miRNAs within a genome is unknown. Thus, sensitive, specific, quantitative, and rapid methods for measuring the expression levels of miRNAs would significantly advance the field.
The short 21 nucleotide nature of these molecules makes them difficult to study via conventional techniques. They are not easily amplified which makes miRNA microarrays and quantitative PCR technically challenging. Despite these challenges, several groups have undertaken miRNA microarray studies to quantify miRNA gene expression. Their approaches are similar in requiring up-front enrichment for small RNAs, reverse transcription, PCR amplification, labeling, and clean-up steps. While the arrays are superior at large scale screening they lack the ability to finely discriminate expression levels and are at best semi-quantitative. Theoretically the most sensitive technique to quantify miRNAs is reverse transcription RT-PCR (real time RT-PCR). However, this method is difficult in both assay (probe) design and execution. Tissue samples must be devoid of enzyme inhibitors to enable efficient reverse transcription and amplification steps (Tichopad et al., 2004).

These guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the American College of Critical Care Medicine (for the Society of Critical Care Medicine), and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America contain recommendations for the management of adults and children with, and diagnosis of infections related to, peripheral and nontunneled central venous catheters (CVCs), pulmonary artery catheters, tunneled central catheters, and implantable devices. The guidelines, written for clinicians, contain IDSA evidence-based recommendations for assessment of the quality and strength of the data. Recommendations are presented according to the type of catheter, the infecting organism, and the associated complications.
Intravascular catheter-related infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus, aerobic gram-negative bacilli, and Candida albicans most commonly cause catheter-related bloodstream infection. Management of catheter-related infection varies according to the type of catheter involved. After appropriate cultures of blood and catheter samples are done, empirical iv antimicrobial therapy should be initiated on the basis of clinical clues, the severity of the patient's acute illness, underlying disease, and the potential pathogen (s) involved. In most cases of nontunneled CVC-related bacteremia and fungemia, the CVC should be removed.

This paper describes further development of the study of a set of IRAS-defined T Tauri stars, located within the Taurus region (taken as the area RA = 4h to 5h; dec = +16° to +31°), and selected from the IRAS point-source catalogue purely on the basis of their [25 m – 12 m] and [60 m – 25 m] colours. The original selection, which is described elsewhere (Harris, 1985) was based on an analysis of the IRAS colours of the known T Tauri stars within the region (found to be tightly defined, and representing blackbody temperatures between about 200 and 300 K, and 100 and 200 K, respectively), and gave the intriguing result that the extended sample, defined purely by these colours, adhered strongly to the geographic clustering found previously both for the known T Tauri stars and for the (presumably very much younger) ‘dense core sources’.
