A novel, broadband, nonlinear behavioral model, based on support vector regression (SVR) is presented in this paper. The proposed model, distinct from existing SVR-based models, incorporates frequency information into its formalism, allowing the model to perform accurate prediction across a wide frequency band. The basic theory of the proposed model, along with model implementation and the model extraction procedure for radio frequency transistor devices is provided. The model is verified through comparisons with the simulation of an equivalent circuit model, as well as experimental measurements of a 10 W Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistor. It is seen that the efficiency prediction throughout the Smith chart, for varying fundamental and second harmonic loads, across a wideband frequency range, show excellent fidelity to the measured results. Device dc self-biasing is also modelled to allow prediction of power amplifier (PA) efficiency, which is shown to be highly accurate when compared with corresponding measured data. Finally, a class-J PA is constructed and measured across the frequency with a large-signal input tone. The resulting measured and modelled values of key PA performance figures are shown to be in excellent agreement, indicating the model is suitable for broadband PA design.

Multi-device radio frequency power amplifiers (PAs) often exhibit strongly non-linear behavior in combination with long-term memory effects, leading to an extremely challenging model development cycle. This paper presents a new, dynamic, behavioral modeling technique, based on a combination of the real-valued decomposed piecewise method and concepts from the field of machine learning. The underlying theory of the proposed modeling technique is provided, along with a detailed modeling procedure. Experimental results show that the proposed decomposed piecewise support vector regression (SVR) model leads to significant performance improvements when compared with standard SVR models for both single transistor and multi-transistor PAs. Different model thresholds are used to test the proposed model performance for both PA types. For the single-transistor PA, modeled using only one partition, an approximately 10 dB normalized mean square error (NMSE) reduction is seen when compared with the standard SVR model. For the same PA, when utilizing two partitions, the reduction improves to 14 dB. When applied to a multi-device Doherty PA, the NMSE between model and measurement data is −50 dB, representing more than 10 dB improvement compared with the standard SVR model.

Objective:
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often adversely affect adaptive functioning (AF). However, the cognitive mechanisms by which AF is disrupted are not well understood in young children who sustain TBI. This study examined pragmatic language (PL) and executive functioning (EF) as potential mechanisms for AF disruption in children with early, predominantly mild-complicated, TBI.
Method:The sample consisted of 76 children between the ages of 6 and 10 years old who sustained a TBI (n = 36) or orthopedic injury (OI; n = 40) before 6 years of age and at least 1 year prior to testing (M = 4.86 years, SD = 1.59). Children’s performance on a PL and an expressive vocabulary task (which served as a control task), and parent report of child’s EF and AF were examined at two time points 1 year apart (i.e., at age 8 and at age 9 years).
Results:Injury type (TBI vs. OI) significantly predicted child’s social and conceptual, but not practical, AF. Results indicated that PL, and not expressive vocabulary or EF at time 1, mediated the relationship between injury type and both social and conceptual AF at time 2.
Conclusions:A TBI during early childhood appears to subtly, but uniquely, disrupt complex language skills (i.e., PL), which in turn may disrupt subsequent social and conceptual AF in middle childhood. Additional longitudinal research that examines different aspects of PL and adaptive outcomes into adolescence is warranted.

Objective
To examine patterns and predictors of primary mental health care service use following 2 major Australian natural disaster events.
MethodsUtilizing data from a national minimum dataset, descriptive and regression analyses were conducted to identify levels and predictors of the use of the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) program over a 2-year period following 2 major Australian bushfire and flood/cyclone disasters.
ResultsThe bushfire disaster resulted in significantly greater and more enduring ATAPS service volume, while service delivery for both disasters peaked in the third quarter. Consumers affected by bushfires (IRR 1.51, 95% CI 1.20–1.89), diagnosed with depression (IRR 2.57, 95% CI 1.60-4.14), anxiety (IRR 2.06, 95% CI 1.21-3.49), or both disorders (IRR 2.15, 95% CI 1.35-3.42) utilized treatment at higher rates.
ConclusionsThe substantial demand for primary mental health care services following major natural disasters can vary in magnitude and trajectory with disaster type. Disaster-specific ATAPS services provide a promising model to cater for this demand in primary care settings. Disaster type and need-based variables as drivers of ATAPS use intensity indicate an equitable level of service use in line with the program intention. Established service usage patterns can assist with estimating capacity requirements in similar disaster circumstances. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2015;9:275-282)

Mortality during the finishing phase in beef steers has increased over the last 13 years at a rate of 0.05% per year for cattle fed in Cactus Feeders’ operations. A change in the demographics of placements has also occurred, in that heavier weight cattle are being placed as compared to previous years. Morbidity rates are lower, but higher case fatality rates are observed when compared to years when lighter weight cattle were placed. More lung lesions of varying degree are documented at necropsy of new arrivals and there is greater perception of reduced response to therapy in animals identified with respiratory disease. As placement weights have increased, mortality in the early stages of the feeding period has decreased, resulting in a greater proportion of total death loss later in the period. This shift, in conjunction with an increasing long-term trend of total death loss, can lead to the interpretation of higher ‘late day mortality’. Rather than relying solely on observation and distributions of the data, Cactus Feeders believes that the development of a predictive model is better suited to address the potential of ‘late day mortality’ in confined cattle feeding operations.

A case study is presented of a 13-year-old adolescent male with a long history of anxious symptoms related to school attendance. At the time of referral to the school refusal clinic, the adolescent had significant difficulty attending school, having attended for only 1 day in the past 3 weeks. A cognitive-behavioural treatment program was conducted over 3 weeks, consisting of seven sessions with the adolescent, seven sessions with his parents, and consultation to school personnel. Treatment focused on the implementation of behaviour management techniques by caregivers as well as teaching anxiety management skills to the adolescent. Positive treatment outcomes included the adolescent's return to full-time attendance at school as well as a decrease in emotional distress. The implications of treatment are discussed in relation to the simultaneous application of behaviour management and anxiety management strategies in the treatment of school refusal.

In this paper, the basic quadratic form of the poly-harmonic distortion model is first presented and this is then extended to provide a new, modified quadratic poly-harmonic distortion model. Comparisons between the X-parameter model, the basic quadratic poly-harmonic distortion model, and the modified version are provided. Both simulation and experimental test results show that the new modified model provides significant improvements in accuracy, not only for the fundamental frequency, but also for DC. Work on the optimization of the model is also presented, providing further improvements in both the model extraction time and the file size.

In this paper we present a microfabricated SiC based alternative to glass-fiber optogenetic stimulation. The glass fiber system currently used for stimulation has numerous drawbacks. First, the very presence of glass can evoke an immune response in cortical tissue that can impede the light-to-neuron optical interface. This glial scarring of brain tissue effectively lowers the spatial resolution and power output of the system. Second, the fragility of an implanted glass fiber is a problem that has yet to be fully addressed. Using SiC the proposed optical structure will address these problems by significantly lowering the amount glial scarring and astrocytic activity expressed as a result of the implant. In addition, single crystal SiC allows for a flexible device that can move with the surrounding tissue without fracturing. Finally, the current glass fibers tend be single channel devices with a single ended emitter. The proposed microfabricated device will allow for multiple channels, multiple wavelengths of stimulation, and electrical feedback on each channel improving upon the current standard.
