Promulgating a continuum model of mental health and mental illness has been proposed as a way to reduce stigma by decreasing notions of differentness. This systematic review and meta-analysis examines whether continuum beliefs are associated with lower stigma, and whether continuum interventions reduce stigma.
Methods
Following a pre-defined protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42019123606), we searched three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO) yielding 6726 studies. After screening, we included 33 studies covering continuum beliefs, mental illness, and stigma. Of these, 13 studies were included in meta-analysis.
Results
Continuum beliefs are consistently associated with lower stigma. Interventions were effective at manipulating continuum beliefs but differ in their effects on stigmatising attitudes.
Conclusions
We discuss whether and to what extent attitudes towards people with mental illness can be improved by providing information on a mental health-mental illness continuum. It appeared to be relevant whether interventions promoted a feeling of ‘us’ and a process of identification with the person with mental illness. We discuss implications for the design of future interventions.
R-MAT (for Recursive MATrix) is a simple, widely used model for generating graphs with a power law degree distribution, a small diameter, and communitys structure. It is particularly attractive for generating very large graphs because edges can be generated independently by an arbitrary number of processors. However, current R-MAT generators need time logarithmic in the number of nodes for generating an edge— constant time for generating one bit at a time for node IDs of the connected nodes. We achieve constant time per edge by precomputing pieces of node IDs of logarithmic length. Using an alias table data structure, these pieces can then be sampled in constant time. This simple technique leads to practical improvements by an order of magnitude. This further pushes the limits of attainable graph size and makes generation overhead negligible in most situations.
In the past years, numerous alternative cations to replace Pb2+ in perovskite solar cells have been investigated. In terms of toxicity and chemical stability, methylammonium bismuth iodide [(CH3NH3)3Bi2I9 or MBI] containing the Bi3+ cation has been considered as a promising material. However, fabrication of coherent MBI films remains challenging. Recently, significant progress has been achieved by using vapor deposition processes. Compared with solution-processed ones, vapor-deposited MBI solar cells show higher fill factors and efficiencies. In this work, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of MBI is investigated. Employing nitrogen as carrier gas, the precursors bismuth iodide (BiI3) and methylammonium iodide (MAI) are deposited sequentially over several cycles and form MBI during the process. In order to form dense and coherent layers, the lengths of the deposition cycles as well as the substrate temperature have been optimized. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the strong influence of both parameters on growth and crystal properties. Optimized films of MBI integrated into solar cells show that CVD of MBI is a promising method for fabricating large-area solar cells.
Children with CHD and acquired heart disease have unique, high-risk physiology. They may have a higher risk of adverse tracheal-intubation-associated events, as compared with children with non-cardiac disease.
Materials and methods
We sought to evaluate the occurrence of adverse tracheal-intubation-associated events in children with cardiac disease compared to children with non-cardiac disease. A retrospective analysis of tracheal intubations from 38 international paediatric ICUs was performed using the National Emergency Airway Registry for Children (NEAR4KIDS) quality improvement registry. The primary outcome was the occurrence of any tracheal-intubation-associated event. Secondary outcomes included the occurrence of severe tracheal-intubation-associated events, multiple intubation attempts, and oxygen desaturation.
Results
A total of 8851 intubations were reported between July, 2012 and March, 2016. Cardiac patients were younger, more likely to have haemodynamic instability, and less likely to have respiratory failure as an indication. The overall frequency of tracheal-intubation-associated events was not different (cardiac: 17% versus non-cardiac: 16%, p=0.13), nor was the rate of severe tracheal-intubation-associated events (cardiac: 7% versus non-cardiac: 6%, p=0.11). Tracheal-intubation-associated cardiac arrest occurred more often in cardiac patients (2.80 versus 1.28%; p<0.001), even after adjusting for patient and provider differences (adjusted odds ratio 1.79; p=0.03). Multiple intubation attempts occurred less often in cardiac patients (p=0.04), and oxygen desaturations occurred more often, even after excluding patients with cyanotic heart disease.
Conclusions
The overall incidence of adverse tracheal-intubation-associated events in cardiac patients was not different from that in non-cardiac patients. However, the presence of a cardiac diagnosis was associated with a higher occurrence of both tracheal-intubation-associated cardiac arrest and oxygen desaturation.
In the Netherlands, over 190 gas fields of varying size have been exploited, and 15% of these have shown seismicity. The prime cause for seismicity due to gas depletion is stress changes caused by pressure depletion and by differential compaction. The observed onset of induced seismicity due to gas depletion in the Netherlands occurs after a considerable pressure drop in the gas fields. Geomechanical studies show that both the delay in the onset of induced seismicity and the nonlinear increase in seismic moment observed for the induced seismicity in the Groningen field can be explained by a model of pressure depletion, if the faults causing the induced seismicity are not critically stressed at the onset of depletion. Our model shows concave patterns of log moment with time for individual faults. This suggests that the growth of future seismicity could well be more limited than would be inferred from extrapolation of the observed trend between production or compaction and seismicity. The geomechanical models predict that seismic moment increase should slow down significantly immediately after a production decrease, independently of the decay rate of the compaction model. These findings are in agreement with the observed reduced seismicity rates in the central area of the Groningen field immediately after production decrease on 17 January 2014. The geomechanical model findings therefore support scope for mitigating induced seismicity by adjusting rates of production and associated pressure change. These simplified models cannot serve as comprehensive models for predicting induced seismicity in any particular field. To this end, a more detailed field-specific study, taking into account the full complexity of reservoir geometry, depletion history and mechanical properties, is required.
Typical electron transport (2,2′,2″-(1,3,5-benzinetriyl)-tris(1-phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi)) and injection (Cs2CO3) materials are successfully replaced by zirconium tetrakis(8-hydroxyquinolinolate) (Zrq4) and lithium 2-((o-tolylimino)methyl)-phenolate (EI-111) in simplified OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) processed by organic vapor phase deposition (OVPD). The performance of combining Zrq4 and EI-111 is analyzed in unipolar devices and compared to devices with configurations of Zrq4/Cs2CO3, TPBi/EI-111 and TPBi/Cs2CO3. Current density-voltage (J-V) measurements are performed and correlated to different carrier injection and transport properties. The investigated material combinations are implemented in the simplified OLED structures and compared to each other. To account for the high HOMO level of Zrq4, 5 nm of TPBi are added to confine holes and excitons in the emissive layer (EML) and to improve device performance. After tailoring the organic stack for OLED with Zrq4, a remarkable boost in device efficiency is observed. The luminous efficacy increased from 3.0 to 21.9 lm/W and the EQE from 2.1 to 11.0 % for a device with Zrq4/EI-111. Furthermore, OLED having Zrq4/Cs2CO3 show an even greater enhancement to 26.3 lm/W and 11.7 %.
Although Pb-based perovskite solar cells already achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCE) beyond 20 %, the use of toxic Pb is causing considerable environmental concern. As a consequence, a variety of alternative cations have been investigated to replace Pb2+ in the perovskite structure. Methylammonium bismuth iodide (MA3Bi2I9, MBI) has shown promising results for environmentally benign and chemically stable devices. While the PCE of MBI-based solar cells are still comparably low, structural improvements have been made by using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CVD allows for the well-controlled formation of coherent and dense MBI layers in contrast to solution-processing. In this work, CVD as a possible MBI fabrication method for efficient and size-scalable solar cells is discussed. The precursors MA iodide (MAI) and Bi iodide (BiI3) are deposited in an alternating deposition process forming the desired MBI perovskite on the heated substrate. Substrate temperatures as well as deposition times of each precursor are varied with the aim of forming coherent and dense MBI layers. Optimized films are further processed to solar cell prototypes and compared with solution-processed reference devices. The results reveal that CVD possesses great potential to enable the manufacture of MBI photovoltaic (PV) devices processed in a solvent-free environment.
We draw attention to studies indicating that phasic arousal increases interference effects in tasks necessitating the recruitment of cognitive control. We suggest that arousal-biased competition models such as GANE (glutamate amplifies noradrenergic effects) may be able to explain these findings by taking into account dynamic, within-trial changes in the relative salience of task-relevant and task-irrelevant features. However, testing this hypothesis requires a computational model.
Strong winds from massive stars are a topic of interest to a wide range of astrophysical fields. In High-Mass X-ray Binaries the presence of an accreting compact object on the one side allows to infer wind parameters from studies of the varying properties of the emitted X-rays; but on the other side the accretor’s gravity and ionizing radiation can strongly influence the wind flow. Based on a collaborative effort of astronomers both from the stellar wind and the X-ray community, this presentation attempts to review our current state of knowledge and indicate avenues for future progress.
High-quality cost estimates for hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) are vital evidence for healthcare policy and decision-making.
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the costs attributable to hospital-acquired CDI from the healthcare payer perspective.
METHODS
We conducted a population-based propensity-score matched cohort study of incident hospitalized subjects diagnosed with CDI (those with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Canada code A04.7) from January 1, 2003, through December 31, 2010, in Ontario, Canada. Infected subjects were matched to uninfected subjects (those without the code A04.7) on age, sex, comorbidities, geography, and other variables, and followed up through December 31, 2011. We stratified results by elective and nonelective admissions. The main study outcomes were up-to-3-year costs, which were evaluated in 2014 Canadian dollars.
RESULTS
We identified 28,308 infected subjects (mean annual incidence, 27.9 per 100,000 population, 3.3 per 1,000 admissions), with a mean age of 71.5 years (range, 0–107 years), 54.0% female, and 8.0% elective admissions. For elective admission subjects, cumulative mean attributable 1-, 2-, and 3-year costs adjusted for survival (undiscounted) were $32,151 (95% CI, $28,192–$36,005), $34,843 ($29,298–$40,027), and $37,171 ($30,364–$43,415), respectively. For nonelective admission subjects, the corresponding costs were $21,909 ($21,221–$22,609), $26,074 ($25,180–$27,014), and $29,944 ($28,873–$31,086), respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
Hospital-acquired CDI is associated with substantial healthcare costs. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first CDI costing study to present longitudinal costs. New strategies may be warranted to mitigate this costly infectious disease.
Urban Chinese today do not appear to trust foreign countries. Why are they so suspicious? Over the past quarter century, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has utilized its educational and propaganda systems to produce historical narratives of imperial China's beneficence towards its East Asian neighbors, and of an early modern ‘Century of Humiliation’ at the hands of ‘imperialist’ foreign powers. Qualitative analysis of Chinese social media today suggests that these narratives are tied to widespread popular distrust of China's ‘ungrateful’ East Asian neighbors and the ‘hegemonic’ West today. Interrogating a 2012 survey of urban Chinese, this paper explores the sources of international attitudes quantitatively. It first examines whether Chinese today do indeed distrust foreign countries. It then tests two hypotheses about the drivers of Chinese distrust towards the world today. A ‘top-down’ socialization hypothesis holds that political (e.g. party propaganda via education and the media) and/or social (e.g. peer groups, social conformity) pressures shape the international attitudes of the Chinese people. A ‘bottom-up’ psychological hypothesis, by contrast, holds that individual differences like age and gender shape Chinese attitudes. We find substantial support for the former: more years of education are associated with levels of dis/trust in foreign countries in the socially or politically appropriate ways. However, we also find that ‘bottom-up’ individual differences in subjective interest in international affairs interact with ‘top-down’ socialization processes like education and media exposure in shaping the international attitudes of urban Chinese today. The prevalence of public discourses of distrust towards foreign countries does not bode well for Chinese foreign policy in the twenty-first century.
While most mainland Chinese today have extremely few direct contacts with either America or Americans, their indirect contacts with both, via globalized American popular culture, are increasing rapidly. Do daily parasocial contacts with American celebrities shape Chinese views of America? Based on two experimental studies, this paper argues that even indirect, subconscious exposure to American celebrities via popular magazine covers shapes Chinese views of America. However, the impact of that exposure depends upon both the specific nature of the bicultural exposure and the psychological predispositions of the Chinese involved. Not all Chinese are alike, and their personality differences shape whether they experience American popular culture as enriching or threatening, leading to integrative and exclusionary reactions, respectively.
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy frequently experience anticipatory distress before treatment sessions. Eighty-six cancer patients (ovarian, lymphoma and breast) were assessed to determine the prevalence of anticipatory nausea and vomiting (ANV). Approximately one patient in three reported anticipatory nausea (AN), and of these 6 also experienced anticipatory vomiting (AV). Several patients reported anticipatory anxiety without any sensation of nausea. Clinically the notion of anticipatory distress may be more fruitful so that the problem of pretreatment anxiety is also addressed. Generally, AN was rated as moderate or worse in severity, occurred fairly consistently, and often began well before arrival at hospital on treatment day. It is suggested that future research should endeavour to link more closely the topography of the problem and the intervention techniques employed, as well as evaluating a broader range of possible interventions.
Three adults with haemophilia participated in a study designed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural techniques in the alleviation of chronic arthritic pain. The intervention comprised cognitive-coping skills, primarily relaxation training and guided imagery techniques, as well as identifying and altering antecedents and consequences that may have influenced their pain experience. The dependent measures included visual analogue rating scales, the Arthritis Impact Measurements Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory and pedometer readings. All three men showed significant reductions in pain, which were largely maintained at six-month follow-up. This study supports earlier findings with this population, and highlights the importance of monitoring the implementation of independent measures.
The semiconductor cuprous oxide crystallizes in a simple cubic structure and reveals outstanding characteristics: Independent of the method and conditions of the synthesis of crystalline Cu2O its Raman spectra are dominated by infrared active, silent, and defect modes rather than by Raman allowed phonon modes only. A detailed group theoretical analysis demonstrates that point defects reduce the local symmetry, lift the Raman selection rules, and thus diminish the distinction between Raman allowed and Raman forbidden lattice vibrations. Of all intrinsic defects only the presence of the copper vacancy in the so called split configuration introduces possible Raman activity for all Cu2O extended phonon modes observed in experiment.
Background: Children of bipolar parents are at elevated risk for psychiatric disorders including bipolar disorder. Helping bipolar parents to optimize parenting skills may improve their children's mental health outcomes. Clear evidence exists for benefits of behavioural parenting programmes, including those for depressed mothers. However, no studies have explored web-based self-directed parenting interventions for bipolar parents. Aims: The aim of this research was to conduct a pilot study of a web-based parenting intervention based on the Triple P-Positive Parenting Programme. Method: Thirty-nine self-diagnosed bipolar parents were randomly allocated to the web-based intervention or a waiting list control condition. Parents reported on their index child (entry criterion age 4–10 years old). Perceived parenting behaviour and child behaviour problems (internalizing and externalizing) were assessed at inception and 10 weeks later (at course completion). Fifteen participants (4 control group and 11 intervention group) did not provide follow-up data. Results: Levels of child behaviour problems (parent rated; Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) were above clinical thresholds at baseline, and problematic perceived parenting (self-rated; Parenting Scale) was at similar levels to those in previous studies of children with clinically significant emotional and behavioural problems. Parents in the intervention group reported improvements in child behaviour problems and problematic perceived parenting compared to controls. Conclusions: A web-based positive parenting intervention may have benefits for bipolar parents and their children. Initial results support improvement in child behaviour and perceived parenting. A more definitive study addressing the limitations of the current work is now called for.
