Transcendental arguments were prominent in Western philosophy, German idealism, phenomenological tradition, and P. F. Strawson's thinking. They have fallen out of fashion because of their associations with transcendental idealism and verificationism. They are still invoked by important figures in the analytic tradition even if the very same tradition has cast doubt on such arguments. The nature of transcendental arguments remains unclear: Are they supposed to be deductive? Are they synthetic or analytic? If they are a priori, how are they supposed to be about the empirical world? What are their relations to necessity, conceivability, and essence? This Element takes up the challenge of elucidating the nature of transcendental arguments, embedded in the wider context of transcendental epistemology. It will be argued that the key premise 'transcendental conditional' is synthetic, necessary, and a posteriori.
Neuropsychological assessment of preschool children is essential for early detection of delays and referral for intervention prior to school entry. This is especially relevant in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), which are disproportionately impacted by micronutrient deficiencies and teratogenic exposures. There are limited options for assessment of preschool learning and memory, developed and validated in resource-limited regions. The Grenada Learning and Memory Scale (GLAMS) was created for use in the Caribbean using an indigenous “ground-up” approach, with feedback from regional stakeholders at various stages of development. The GLAMS contains two subtests - a verbal list-learning task, which imagines a trip to the shop to buy culturally familiar items, and a face-name associative learning task using locally-drawn faces of Caribbean children. There are two versions: a 4-item version for 3-year-olds and a 6-item version for 4 and 5-year-olds. Here we present descriptive data and psychometric features for the GLAMS from an initial preschool sample.
Participants and Methods:
Participants were recruited from a social-emotional intervention study (SGU IRB#14099) in Grenada between 2019-2021. Children were between 36 and 72 months of age, primarily English-speaking, and had no known history of neurodevelopmental disorders. Trained Early Childhood Assessors administered the GLAMS and NEPSY-II in public preschools and homes across Grenada. Exploratory descriptive statistics characterized participant sociodemographics and test score distributions. Spearman correlations, MannWhitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests examined the impact of sociodemographics on test scores. Internal reliability was assessed with coefficient alpha. NEPSY-II subtests were used to assess convergent validity, with the prediction that the highest correlations would be observed for NEPSY-II Sentence Repetition. Test engagement (as reflected by “zero-learning”, “some learning”, and “positive learning curves”) was assessed across each age bracket (in 6-month increments). We assessed and summarized barriers to engagement qualitatively.
Results:
The sample consisted of 304 children (152 males,152 females). Participants were predominantly Afro-Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean. Parent education and household income (Mdn=$370-740 USD per month) were consistent with the general population. GLAMS internal consistency was reliable (a=0.713). There were age effects on list-learning (rs=0.51; p<0.001), list recall (rs=0.51; p<0.001), face-name learning (rs=0.30;p<0.001), and face-name recall (rs=0.25; p<0.001). There were gender effects on list-learning (p=0.02) and list recall (p=0.01) but not face-name learning or recall. All GLAMS subtests were correlated with NEPSY Sentence Repetition (rs=0.22-0.34; p<0.001). There was sufficient sampling of males and females across all 6 age brackets. As age increased, a higher proportion of children showed a positive learning curve (and fewer “zero-scores”) on verbal learning (X2 =30.88, p<0.001) and face-name learning (X2=22.19, p=0.014), demonstrating increased task engagement as children mature. There were various qualitative observations of why children showed “zero-scores”, ranging from environmental distractions to anxiety and inattention.
Conclusions:
As far as we know, the GLAMS is the first preschool measure of learning and memory developed indigenously from within the Caribbean. It shows reliable internal consistency, expected age and gender effects and convergent validity. These initial results are encouraging and support continued efforts to establish test-retest and inter-rater reliability. Plans include validation in clinical samples, scale-up to other Caribbean countries, and eventual adaptation across global LMICs.
The target article argues that language-of-thought hypothesis (LoTH) is applicable to various domains, including perception. However, it focusses exclusively on the visual case, which is limited in this regard. I argue for two ideas in this commentary: first, their case can be extended to other modalities such as touch; and second, the status of those six criteria needs to be further clarified.
The Chinese Great Famine caused widespread starvation in 1959–1961. Its long-term association with depressive symptoms has not been studied.
Aims
To estimate the burden of depressive symptoms and the association of famine exposure with depressive symptoms.
Method
The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study is a nationwide representative survey of 17 708 Chinese adults aged ≥45. Propensity score matching and modified Poisson regression were used to evaluate the association between self-reported famine exposure in early life and depressive symptoms among the overall participants. Such associations were also assessed by developmental stage using modified Poisson regression and logistic regression.
Results
The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 26.2% (95% CI 25.1–27.3%) in 2011. As defined by loss of family members because of starvation, 11.6% (95% CI 10.1–13.1%) of this population experienced severe famine. When compared with participants who did not experience starvation, those who had experienced severe famine during fetal, mid-childhood, young-teenage and early-adulthood stages had 1.87 (95% CI 1.36–2.55), 1.54 (95% CI 1.23–1.94), 1.47 (95% CI 1.09–2.00) and 1.77 (95% CI 1.42–2.21) times higher odds of having depressive symptoms in late adulthood, respectively. The first two trimesters of pregnancy were a critical time window during the fetal stage when severe famine had a stronger association with depressive symptoms. Famine during infant, toddler, preschool or teenage stages was not associated with depressive symptoms. Overall, famine contributed to 13.6% of the depressive symptom burden in this population.
Conclusions
The Chinese Great Famine contributed substantially to the burden of depressive symptoms in China.
Who do violence preventers target to achieve violence prevention? This fundamental question of selection is typically associated with law enforcement, yet gang labeling is critical in another context: nonprofit violence prevention. Eighteen months of fieldwork in a gang outreach organization find that (a) workers operationalize gang violence prevention as social service provision, but (b) services are only offered to those deemed “ready” for life changes. Readiness is an unwritten eligibility criteria leveraged as a rhetorical tool to focus recruitment on clients who demonstrate complicity. It is reaffirmed through external pressures to document program effectiveness; organizational-level concerns for efficient resource allocation; the subpopulation of clients who actually want services; and workers’ own fears of “getting played”—losing face from free-riding clients interested in street worker perks, but not formal services. While core gang members may be most at-risk, their very centrality may deter, rather than justify, providing them services.
Despite the rich set of theories that have developed on international joint ventures (IJVs), little is known about what theoretical criteria senior executives actually incorporate in their judgments of IJV opportunities and partners. Empirical studies have often applied individual theories in a particularistic fashion, rather than recognizing the different theoretical perspectives that boundedly-rational executives may incorporate into their decision models. In this article, we combine decision criteria associated with multiple theories rooted in organizational economics to investigate how top executives process information on IJV opportunities in China. Using an established experimental technique known as policy capturing, we examine how executives cognitively weigh criteria from four prominent theories when making initial assessments of IJVs (i.e., the resource-based view, transaction cost economics, information economics, and real options theory). Our arguments and findings on executives' IJV decision models contribute to decision-making research on alliances and IJVs in China.
Little is known about outcomes after self-harm in East Asia.
Aims
To investigate mortality after self-harm in a Taiwanese population.
Method
Between 2000 and 2003, 1083 individuals who self-harmed were identified through a population self-harm register in Nantou County, Taiwan, and followed until 2007 for date and cause of death on a national mortality database.
Results
In total, 145 individuals died, 48 through suicide. The risks of all-cause and suicide mortality in the first year were 4.7% and 2.1% respectively, representing 8- and 131-fold age- and gender-standardised increases. Male gender and older age were independent risk factors for both suicide and non-suicide mortality. Use of more lethal methods in the index episode was associated with higher mortality but this was accounted for by gender.
Conclusions
Results in this sample support the recommendation that people with a history of recent self-harm should be a major target for suicide prevention programmes.
Few studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) on the long-term prognosis of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Design
A retrospective cohort study.
Setting
The largest regional hospital renowned for haemodialysis in northern Taiwan.
Subjects
A total of 702 ESRD patients undergoing haemodialysis between 1993 and 2002 were evaluated.
Results
The rate of overall use of rhEPO, vitamin D3 or Fe therapy was 62 %. The 10-year survival rate in patients with rhEPO supplementation was statistically more favourable than that in patients without rhEPO (hazard ratio (HR) = 0·38, 95 % CI 0·30, 0·47, P < 0·0001). Similar findings were noted for patients receiving vitamin D3 (HR = 0·36, 95 % CI 0·21, 0·64, P = 0.0004) and Fe (HR = 0·45, 95 % CI 0·33, 0·61, P < 0·0001). After adjusting for age, education and aetiology, the administration of rhEPO resulted in statistically significant improvements in long-term survival rate either with (HR = 0·30, 95 % CI 0·22, 0·42) or without (HR = 0·48, 95 % CI 0·38, 0·61) combined use of Fe or vitamin D3.
Conclusions
We demonstrated a reduction in long-term mortality related to supplementation therapy with rhEPO, vitamin D3 and Fe. The findings provide a justification for the administration of combined supplement therapy in patients undergoing haemodialysis.
Few studies of suicide have simultaneously examined the individual and combined effects of psychosocial and psychiatric risk factors.
Aims
To do so in a representative sample of suicides.
Method
A case-control psychological autopsy was conducted among 113 consecutive suicides and 226 living controls matched for age, gender, ethnicity and area of residence inTaiwan.
Results
Five major risk factors (loss event, suicidal behaviour in first-degree relatives, ICD–10 major depressive episode, emotionally unstable personality disorder and substance dependence) were found to have independent effects on suicide from multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis.
Conclusions
Effective intervention and management for loss event and major depressive episode among emotionally unstable subjects with a family tendency of suicidal behaviour, frequently also comorbid with alcohol or other substance dependence, may prove to be most effective for suicide prevention in different populations.
