In this paper, we describe the system design and capabilities of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope at the conclusion of its construction project and commencement of science operations. ASKAP is one of the first radio telescopes to deploy phased array feed (PAF) technology on a large scale, giving it an instantaneous field of view that covers $31\,\textrm{deg}^{2}$ at $800\,\textrm{MHz}$. As a two-dimensional array of 36$\times$12 m antennas, with baselines ranging from 22 m to 6 km, ASKAP also has excellent snapshot imaging capability and 10 arcsec resolution. This, combined with 288 MHz of instantaneous bandwidth and a unique third axis of rotation on each antenna, gives ASKAP the capability to create high dynamic range images of large sky areas very quickly. It is an excellent telescope for surveys between 700 and $1800\,\textrm{MHz}$ and is expected to facilitate great advances in our understanding of galaxy formation, cosmology, and radio transients while opening new parameter space for discovery of the unknown.
Structural features of condensed tannins affect in vitro ruminal methane production and fermentation characteristics

An in vitro study was conducted to investigate the effects of condensed tannin (CT) structural properties, i.e. average polymer size (or mean degree of polymerization), percentage of cis flavan-3-ols and percentage of prodelphinidins in CT extracts on methane (CH4) production and fermentation characteristics. Condensed tannins were extracted from eight plants in order to obtain different CT types: blackcurrant leaves, goat willow leaves, goat willow twigs, pine bark, redcurrant leaves, sainfoin plants, weeping willow catkins and white clover flowers. They were analysed for CT content and CT composition by thiolytic degradation, followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Grass silage was used as a control substrate. Condensed tannins were added to the substrate at a concentration of 40 g/kg, with or without polyethylene glycol (+ or −PEG 6000 treatment) to inactivate tannins, then incubated for 72 h in mixed buffered rumen fluid from three different lactating dairy cows per run. Total cumulative gas production (GP) was measured by an automated GP system. During the incubation, 12 gas samples (10 µl) were collected from each bottle headspace at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, 30, 36, 48, 56 and 72 h of incubation and analysed for CH4. A modified Michaelis-Menten model was fitted to the CH4 concentration patterns and model estimates were used to calculate total cumulative CH4 production (GPCH4). Total cumulative GP and GPCH4 curves were fitted using biphasic and monophasic modified Michaelis-Menten models, respectively. Addition of PEG increased GP, GPCH4, and CH4 concentration compared with the −PEG treatment. All CT types reduced GPCH4 and CH4 concentration. All CT increased the half time of GP and GPCH4. Moreover, all CT decreased the maximum rate of fermentation for GPCH4 and rate of substrate degradation. The correlation between CT structure and GPCH4 and fermentation characteristics showed that the proportion of prodelphinidins within CT had the largest effect on fermentation characteristics, followed by average polymer size and percentage of cis flavan-3-ols.

This paper describes the system architecture of a newly constructed radio telescope – the Boolardy engineering test array, which is a prototype of the Australian square kilometre array pathfinder telescope. Phased array feed technology is used to form multiple simultaneous beams per antenna, providing astronomers with unprecedented survey speed. The test array described here is a six-antenna interferometer, fitted with prototype signal processing hardware capable of forming at least nine dual-polarisation beams simultaneously, allowing several square degrees to be imaged in a single pointed observation. The main purpose of the test array is to develop beamforming and wide-field calibration methods for use with the full telescope, but it will also be capable of limited early science demonstrations.

Ziprasidone is a second-generation antipsychotic that received Food and Drug Administration approval in February 2001. It has a unique receptor profile that includes high-affinity antagonist activity at dopamine D2 receptors, inverse agonist activity at serotonin (5-HT)2A receptors, agonist activity at 5-HT1A receptors, and a relatively high affinity for the serotonin and norepinephrine transporters. The 5-HT1A affinity, together with the inhibitory effect on monoamine reuptake, may underlie the hypothesized beneficial effects on comorbid affective and cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The short-term efficacy of ziprasidone for core positive symptoms of schizophrenia appears to be comparable to other conventional and atypical antipsychotics. The short-term efficacy of ziprasidone in acute mania has been established based on two 3-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Open-label treatment for up to 52 weeks confirms the sustained efficacy and safety of ziprasidone in bipolar disorder. Maintenance studies in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder indicate that long-term ziprasidone therapy is effective in preventing relapse, while maintaining cognitive and psychosocial benefits. The safety database suggests that the overall cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk associated with ziprasidone is lower than with other atypicals, with notably lower risk of drug-related increases in weight, glucose, or lipids. The data also suggest a modestly increased risk of QTc prolongation that is not dose related or linked to torsades de pointes. Switching to ziprasidone from other atypicals appears to improve both clinical symptoms and metabolic parameters, though more studies are needed to fully characterize these benefits. This monograph summarizes the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of oral ziprasidone in the treatment of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar mania.

A statistical analysis has been made of the figures collected during the last eight years in the Edinburgh area, relating to asthmatic patients who presented themselves for examination in certain departments of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The figures for males and females are considered separately, and refer to the numbers of individuals who presented themselves at various, ages, and in whom the disease first manifested itself at various earlier ages. In all, complete records were obtained of 193 males and 167 females. For convenience the ages are grouped in five-year periods.
It has been shown that the figures in the case of females agree well with the assumption that asthmatics, no matter at what age they are first affected, gradually cease to suffer from the disease, or at least fail to report for examination, at a rate which is constant and independent of age. In the case of males the agreement between theory and observation is not as good as in the case of the females, but much of the discrepancy results from two or three obviously aberrant figures. Of every 100 asthmatics at any age it would appear that approximately 7 females, or 8 males as the case may be, are transferred to a non-complaining category every year. The absence of complaint may be due to death from asthma, or recovery, or to some other cause, as for example, that by repeated experience the individual learns how to avoid conditions which precipitate an attack.
On this assumption the relative rates of incidence (P) of the disease at various ages have been calculated for males and for females. Both curves fall during adolescence, rise to a maximum, and then gradually fall, but the male curve lags behind the female curve. From these figures the rates of attack amongst the potential asthmatics (p) have been calculated both for males and for females. The curves fall during adolescence, then rise, remaining practically constant until about 45 years of age, when a rise occurs towards unity. For the further analysis of these curves larger numbers of figures will be necessary, in order that confidence may be placed in the results.

In our investigation of our subject we have perused the literature, analysed the data of other workers, conducted a number of animal experiments, considered the bearings clinical and pathological of a case of presumed toluene poisoning, and conducted an investigation into the blood state and symptoms of co-workers with this case and yet are unable to give a categorical answer to the question. What are the relative toxicities of toluene and benzene? We would almost feel inclined to echo the words of another worker in the experimental field with regard to benzene, Neumann (1915), who concludes: “The fact that my results so often do not correspond either with one another or with those of Selling, so often indeed do not correspond to expectation, justifies the conclusion that, although benzene is to be regarded as a powerful leucotoxin, it manifests great individual differences in its mode of action and it is very difficult to lay down exactly what action is to be expected.”
We should be inclined to put the case somewhat differently however and put forward the following view as our tentative finding.
The actions of benzene and toluene are very similar. That of benzene is the more powerful because it is a more volatile substance and can therefore reach higher concentration than toluene. This greater volatility at the same time is a reason why it is eliminated more quickly and its effects are less lasting than those produced by toluene. The action of both these substances is on young body cells, probably whatever they are and wherever they may be found, but is most easily discoverable because of its action on the young bone marrow cell and the consequent effect on the cells of the peripheral blood. It is not a specific action but operates, according to circumstances, on the stem cells of the myeloid leucocyte or the erythrocyte. This does not mean that the substances have little or no effect on the lymphocyte, for the lymphoid tissue in the body is so very abundant that it would only be in extreme cases that the effect on that cell would be manifest peripherally. Like many poisons, indeed like many of the drugs which are used in Medicine, the first effects of these substances are stimulating. Leucocytosis, erythrocytosis and possibly thrombocytosis are early manifestations or the manifestation of slighter action, with histological evidence of hyperplasia. This is succeeded by the truly toxic or destructive action and the production of leucopenia, anaemia, thrombopenia and the effects due to action on other organs. The ultimate result in clinical terms is an agranulocytic anaemia accompanied by purpura haemorrhagica and, as the pathological manifestation an aplastic bone marrow. The fatal termination is commonly an infection to which there is no resistance possible in an individual deprived of defence cells and possibly also of defensive substances in the body fluids. Powerful solvents of fat as both these chemical substances are, they produce an action through this means also, on nerve cells, capillary endothelium and parenchyma of organs with consequences represented in nervous symptoms and in haemorrhages. This then is our reading of the results of our investigation and explanation of the variability which may be found, a variability which is regarded mainly as one of phase, although we do not exclude idiosyncrasy altogether as explanation.

Determinations of total phosphorus in water samples have shown areas in the western English Channel with water containing as little as 10 mg. P/m.3, and other areas with double, and more than double, this concentration.
The integral mean concentration of total P in the water column, 20 miles off-shore from Plymouth, has fluctuated between 10 and 16 mg. P/m.3 since June 1947.
The changes which have taken place in this integral mean concentration are attributed to different water masses, of different total phosphorus concentration, passing through the area, rather than to a seasonal change in the total phosphorus content of a water mass. No marked deposition of phosphorus-containing detritus could be found.
Changes in this integral mean were not coincident with changes in salinity. The geographical distribution of total phosphorus does not coincide with the geographical distribution of salinity.

Vertical hauls between surface and 45 metres depth were made with a measuring net, throughout 1934, at a position 5 miles S.W. of Plymouth Breakwater in circa 50 metres depth of water.
The phytoplankton organisms were counted and also assessed from their content of plant pigments.
A close relation was found between numbers of diatoms and their pigment contents after making allowance for the small size of three species.
The phosphorus content of the phytoplankton was estimated on several occasions.
The zooplankton organisms per cubic metre of sea were counted and estimations were made of their phosphorus content.
The diatom population differed from that found in 1933, in which year the spring outburst was shorter but more intense, the sporadic summer outbursts were more intense, the autumn one lasted longer; and more phosphate was utilised by the plants during the first half of the year.

Pasteur, in May 1884, showed that if the rabies virus of the dog was passed from rabbit to rabbit, or guinea-pig to guinea-pig, it gradually became exalted in virulence and fixed in incubation period for these rodents. This fixed virus remained exalted in virulence when inoculated subdurally into other animals. Magendie held the opinion that the rabies virus, when transmitted by bites from dog to dog, lost its virulence by about the fifth passage.

By many observers Negri bodies have been considered to be parasitic in nature (Negri, 1903; Babes, 1907). Williams and Lowden (1906) go further and describe the life cycle of these bodies, regarding them as belonging to the Sporozoa, and give to them the name of Neuroryctes hydrophobiae. Calkins (1910), although he states that the parasitic nature of these bodies is not proven, still evidently inclines to that view. In his criticism of the work of Williams and Lowden he comes to differ from them as regards the classification of the supposed organisms. He thinks that their variable forms, the uninucleate condition, the occurrence of a state of distributed chromatin, and the budding phenomenon, are characteristic not of Sporozoa but of parasitic Rhizopods. His opinion is that the distributed chromatin masses in the Negri bodies are in all probability representative of the idiochromidia which are so characteristic of Rhizopods.

Over the past few years several experienced groups studying malaria have encountered significant problems with their particular rodent malaria–host system. This has involved, in some cases, periods during which the recovery of cryo-preserved parasite stocks and growth of bloodstream parasites was markedly inhibited and, in other cases, periods of drastically increased mortality rates. The common factor linking these incidents was that they coincided with alterations in the experimental animal diet used. in the experimental animal diet used. The inhibition of growth of cryopreserved stabilates or bloodstream parasites was abolished by supplementation with p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) or by changing the diet used. Although the suppressive effects of diets lacking PABA on parasite growth have been known for over 30 years, the variation of PABA levels in modern laboratory animal feed concentrates is not well recognized. We have not established the exact cause of increased mortality, but it has been overcome by changing the diet used. We are documenting our experiences with this potential variable to forewarn workers in other laboratories of possible problems inherent in the use of different diets.

Time series spectra of the F5IV star Procyon (α CMi) were obtained at the Kitt Peak National Observatory during a 35-night observing run in January-February 1997. The observations were obtained as part of an international collaboration to detect and study acoustic p-mode oscillations in solar-type stars. Spectra covered the wavelength range from 4000 to 5300 Å, with a resolving power of approximately 3500 (1.3 Å resolution). The sampling rate was one observation per minute, and the typical S/N ratio per pixel after averaging along columns is in excess of 1000. We obtained 12,888 spectra. A sample spectrum is shown in Figure 1

We are investigating complete samples of southern hemisphere flat spectrum extra-galactic radio sources drawn from the Parkes 2.7 GHz Survey (see Bolton et al. 1979 and references therein). These samples are being used for a variety of investigations, including a determination of the space distribution and luminosity function of radio QSOs, their radio size distribution, as well as the structures of the individual sources. Accurate positions are being determined, as well, in order to establish an extra-galactic position reference frame in the southern hemisphere.

The scope of Commission 12 has broadened somewhat in recent years, to include not only the structure of the solar atmosphere, but that of the solar interior as well. The scientific purview of this commission, and of the present report, are complementary to those of Commission 10 (solar activity). Rather than attempting to review all progress in solar structure studies over the past triennium, this report deals with six topics of great current interest, in which there is a great deal of current work.
Comparison of 200 Liter and 40 Milliliter Leach Tests*

During the past year we have conducted a modified MCC-1 leach test on a 145 kg block of a cast cement waste form. The leach vessel was a 200 liter Teflon®-lined drum and contained 97.5 liters of deionized water. The results of this large-scale leach test were compared with the results of standard MCC-1 tests (40 ml) on smaller samples of the same waste form. The ratio of leachate volumes between the large and small scale tests was 2500 and the ratio of sample masses was 150,000. The cast cement samples for both tests contained plutonium-doped incinerator ash.
The leachates from these tests were analyzed for both plutonium and the matrix elements. Evaluation of plutonium plateout in the large-scale test indicated that the majority of the plutonium leached from the samples deposits onto vessel walls and little (<3 × 10−12M) remains in solution. Comparison of elemental concentrations in the leachates indicates some differences up to 5X in the concentration in the large- and small-scale tests. The differences are attributed to differences in the solubilities of Ca, Si, and Fe at pH ˜11.5 and at pH ˜12.5. The higher pH observed for the large-scale test is a result of the larger quantities of sodium in the large block of cement.
