This study investigates the long-term associations between a childhood allowance (parental pocket money) and financial literacy, monetary attitudes, and time-discounting preferences in adulthood, with a specific focus on gender differences, using survey data from Japan. Gender factor analyses were conducted to identify common factors in psychological attitudes toward money. Subsequently, we estimated the relationship between childhood allowance and these factors, as well as the time-discounting preference and financial literacy by gender. Interaction terms between allowance types and gender were included to examine heterogeneous associations. Our findings reveal that regular monthly allowances are associated with good budgeting habits among males, whereas females receiving any form of allowance tend to have less negative attitudes toward money. Furthermore, the relationship between a childhood allowance and time-discounting preferences varies by gender, with females being more affected by the allowance. Additionally, the association between childhood allowance and financial literacy differs by gender and varies depending on how the allowance is received. Overall, this study underscores the importance of considering childhood financial experiences to understand financial behaviors and attitudes.
Every 5 years, the World Congress of the Econometric Society brings together scholars from around the world. Leading scholars present state-of-the-art overviews of their areas of research, offering newcomers access to key research in economics. Advances in Economics and Econometrics: Twelfth World Congress consists of papers and commentaries presented at the Twelfth World Congress of the Econometric Society. This two-volume set includes surveys and interpretations of key developments in economics and econometrics, and discussions of future directions for a variety of topics, covering both theory and application. The first volume addresses such topics as contract theory, industrial organization, health and human capital, as well as racial justice, while the second volume includes theoretical and applied papers on climate change, time-series econometrics, and causal inference. These papers are invaluable for experienced economists seeking to broaden their knowledge or young economists new to the field.

Vicarious learning helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) acquire foreign market knowledge by observing and interpreting other firms’ actions and outcomes in international markets. We searched Scopus, ProQuest, and EBSCOhost (2000–2025) and retained 27 studies (2007–2025). The synthesis organizes prior studies into four analytically derived categories that summarize how vicarious learning is conceptualized and operationalized in SME internationalization research: (T1) peer performance benchmarking, (T2) imitation and leader-following, (T3) institutional mimetic pressures, and (T4) network-, cluster-, and advisor-enabled vicarious learning. Across themes, a subset of studies suggests that absorptive capacity may condition whether external experience is recognized, assimilated, and exploited, although direct tests remain uneven and in some cases the contingency is inferred rather than explicitly tested. We translate these insights into an organizing framework and a future agenda on boundary conditions, measurement, and multi-level designs, positioning the review as mechanism clarification that imposes conceptual order on a fragmented literature, rather than as field-level consolidation.

We examine the interplay of global and domestic media sentiment and the global financial cycle with regard to effects on the exchange rates of emerging markets (EMs). We apply both linear and regime-switching models that employ various measures of media tone and media coverage and proxies for the global financial cycle. The results reveal a significant appreciation of the EMs’ currencies in response to domestic and global sentiment shocks as well as the general and pure global factors (risky asset prices). We also identify an asymmetric effect in which the impacts of domestic and global sentiments and global financial cycles on EM currencies are greater in the case of positive media coverage.
