This paper studies the relationship between slack and research and development (R&D) investment by addressing the role of the founder as the ‘microfoundation’ among Chinese newly listed firms. We propose a contingent approach to understanding the slack-R&D investment relationship by examining the influence of the founder’s human capital and social ties, which is distinguished into political and managerial ties. Our results show that the founder’s human capital, measured by its educational level, strengthens the relationship between absorbed and unabsorbed slack resources and R&D investment. We also find that the founder’s managerial ties strengthen the relationship between resource slack and R&D intensity, whereas political ties weaken that link. Our results demonstrate the founder’s crucial role in underpinning resource utilization in newly listed firms and emphasise the importance of social ties in driving firms’ R&D activities in emerging economies.
This commentary argues that industrial-organizational psychology can be a conduit for greater good by focusing on the United Nations sustainable development goal number 8 which calls for decent work for all. However, before industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology can truly be used for the greater good it must reckon with our identity crisis: who does I-O psychology serve, the worker or organization? We argue that under a capitalistic model, there is no clear path to working with organizations to provide decent work and economic growth simultaneously. Thus, it is critical that the I-O psychology field clarifies its purpose and identity.
Health benefits represent employers’ fastest growing operating expense. Efforts from human resources to control healthcare spending through restrictive plan design changes and corporate wellness programs may not achieve employer health and financial goals and may negatively impact employee outcomes. Employers are increasingly contracting directly with providers in order to access quality medical care and to control spending. The purpose of this practice-focused paper is to provide survey data collected from 10 employers as part of the quality improvement activities of a direct primary care (DPC) program. Overall, survey responses of employees engaged with DPC had higher patient satisfaction, group health plan rating, perceived organizational support, and job satisfaction than survey responses of those registered into the program but not yet engaged with a DPC physician. Implementation considerations and DPC characteristics are provided.
