The ‘scanning process' Z(t), t ∈ ℝk of the title is a Gaussian random field obtained by associating with Z(t) the value of a set-indexed Brownian motion on the translate t + A0 of some ‘scanning set' A0. We study the basic properties of the random field Z relating, for example, its continuity and other sample path properties to the geometrical properties of A0. We ask if the set A0 determines the scanning process, and investigate when, and how, it is possible to recover the structure of A0 from realisations of the sample paths of the random field Z.

We study properties of the clusters of a system of fully penetrable balls, a model formed by centering equal-sized balls on the points of a Poisson process. We develop a formal expression for the density of connected clusters of k balls (called k-mers) in the system, first rigorously derived by Penrose [15]. Our integral expressions are free of inherent redundancies, making them more tractable for numerical evaluation. We also derive and evaluate an integral expression for the average volume of k-mers.

Assessing the reliability of computer software has been an active area of research in computer science for the past twenty years. To date, well over a hundred probability models for software reliability have been proposed. These models have been motivated by seemingly unrelated arguments and have been the subject of active debate and discussion. In the meantime, the search for an ideal model continues to be pursued. The purpose of this paper is to point out that practically all the proposed models for software reliability are special cases of self-exciting point processes. This perspective unifies the very diverse approaches to modeling reliability growth and provides a common structure under which problems of software reliability can be discussed.

Given a random integer N ≧ 0 and a sequence of random variables Ai ≧ 0, we define a transformation T on the class of probability measures on [0, ∞) by letting Tμ be the distribution of , where {Zi} are independent random variables with distribution μ, which are independent of N and of {Ai} as well. We obtain the optimal conditions for the functional equation μ = Tμ to have a non-trivial solution of finite mean, and we study the existence of moments of the solutions. The work unifies the corresponding theorems of Kesten-Stigum concerning the Galton-Watson process, of Biggins for branching random walks, of Kahane-Peyrière for a model of turbulence of Yaglom made precise by Mandelbrot, and of Durrett-Liggett for the study of invariant measures for certain infinite particle systems.

The accuracy of the Normal or Poisson approximations can be significantly improved by adding part of an asymptotic expansion in the exponent. The signed-compound-Poisson measures obtained in this manner can be of the same structure as the Poisson distribution. For large deviations we prove that signed-compound-Poisson measures enlarge the zone of equivalence for tails.

We investigate in this paper the stability of non-stationary stochastic processes, arising typically in applications of control. The setting is known as stochastic recursive sequences, which allows us to construct on one probability space stochastic processes that correspond to different initial states and even different control policies. It does not require any Markovian assumptions. A natural criterion for stability for such processes is that the influence of the initial state disappears after some finite time; in other words, starting from different initial states, the process will couple after some finite time to the same limiting (not necessarily stationary nor ergodic) stochastic process. We investigate this as well as other types of coupling, and present conditions for them to occur uniformly in some class of control policies. We then use the coupling results to establish new theoretical aspects in the theory of non-Markovian control.

We consider stochastic orders of the following type. Let be a class of functions and let P and Q be probability measures. Then define , if ∫ ⨍ d P ≦ ∫ ⨍ d Q for all f in . Marshall (1991) posed the problem of characterizing the maximal cone of functions generating such an ordering. We solve this problem by using methods from functional analysis. Another purpose of this paper is to derive properties of such integral stochastic orders from conditions satisfied by the generating class of functions. The results are illustrated by several examples. Moreover, we show that the likelihood ratio order is closed with respect to weak convergence, though it is not generated by integrals.

We consider probability metrics of the following type: for a class of functions and probability measures P, Q we define A unified study of such integral probability metrics is given. We characterize the maximal class of functions that generates such a metric. Further, we show how some interesting properties of these probability metrics arise directly from conditions on the generating class of functions. The results are illustrated by several examples, including the Kolmogorov metric, the Dudley metric and the stop-loss metric.

We consider the recursive equation x(n + 1)= A(n)⊗x(n), where x(n + 1) and x(n) are ℝk-valued vectors and A(n) is an irreducible random matrix of size k × k. The matrix-vector multiplication in the (max, +) algebra is defined by (A(n)⊗x(n))= maxj (Aij (n) + xj(n)). This type of equation can be used to represent the evolution of stochastic event graphs which include cyclic Jackson networks, some manufacturing models and models with general blocking (such as Kanban). Let us assume that the sequence {A(n), n ∈ ℕ} is i.i.d. or, more generally, stationary and ergodic. The main result of the paper states that the system couples in finite time with a unique stationary regime if and only if there exists a set of matrices such that and the matrices have a unique periodic regime.

In the series system (competing risks) set-up the observed data are generally accepted as the lifetime (T) and the identifier (δ) of the component causing the failure of the system. Peterson (1976) has provided bounds for the joint survival function of the component lifetimes in terms of the joint distribution of (T, δ). In the case of more complex coherent systems, there are various schemes of observation in the literature. In this paper we provide bounds for the joint and marginal survival functions of the component lifetimes in terms of the joint distribution of the data as obtained under existing and new schemes of observation. We also tackle the reverse problem of obtaining bounds for the joint distributions of the data for given marginal distributions of the component lifetimes and the distribution of the system lifetimes.

A sequence of irreducible closed queueing networks is considered in this paper. We obtain that the queue length processes can be approximated by reflected Brownian motions. Using these approximations, we get rates of convergence of the distributions of queue lengths.

We introduce a batch service discipline, called assemble-transfer batch service, for continuous-time open queueing networks with batch movements. Under this service discipline a requested number of customers is simultaneously served at a node, and transferred to another node as, possibly, a batch of different size, if there are sufficient customers there; the node is emptied otherwise. We assume a Markovian setting for the arrival process, service times and routing, where batch sizes are generally distributed.

Under the assumption that extra batches arrive while nodes are empty, and under a stability condition, it is shown that the stationary distribution of the queue length has a geometric product form over the nodes if and only if certain conditions are satisfied for the extra arrivals. This gives a new class of queueing networks which have tractable stationary distributions, and simultaneously shows that the product form provides a stochastic upper bound for the stationary distribution of the corresponding queueing network without the extra arrivals.

We consider some single-server queues with general service disciplines, where the family of the queueing processes are parameterized by the service time distributions. Through the smoothed perturbation analysis (SPA) technique, we present under some mild conditions a unified approach to give the strongly consistent estimator for the gradient of the steady-state mean sojourn time with respect to the parameter of service time distributions, provided that it exists. Although the implementation of the SPA requires the additional sub-paths in general, the derived estimator is given as suitable for single-run computation. Simulation results are presented for queues with non-preemptive and preemptive-resume priority disciplines which demonstrate the performance of our estimators.
