This work presents a methodology using image analysis to estimate the experimental stiffness of a parallel robot, Parallix LKF-2040, a 3-degree-of-freedom manipulator. The proposed methodology has a simple implementation and can be applied to different architectures of parallel robots. This methodology uses image analysis and camera calibration techniques to estimate compliant displacements of mobile platform produced by several loads at the end effector level, and calculate stiffness in a specific position of mobile platform. Experimental results are presented for different positions within the workspace.

In this paper, a kinematic model of a dual-arm/hand robotic system is derived, which allows the computation of the object position and orientation from the joint variables of each arm and each finger as well as from a suitable set of contact variables. On the basis of this model, a motion planner is designed, where the kinematic redundancy of the system is exploited to satisfy some secondary tasks aimed at ensuring grasp stability and manipulation dexterity without violating physical constraints. To this purpose, a prioritized task sequencing with smooth transitions between tasks is adopted. Afterwards, a controller is designed so as to execute the motion references provided by the planner and, at the same time, achieve a desired contact force exerted by each finger on the grasped object. To this end, a parallel position/force control is considered. A simulation case study has been developed by using the dynamic simulator GRASPIT!, which has been suitably adapted and redistributed.

This paper proposes an image sequence-based navigation method under the teaching-replay framework for robots in piecewise linear routes. Waypoints used by the robot contain either the positions with large heading changes or selected midway positions between junctions. The robot applies local visual homing to move between consecutive waypoints. The arrival at a waypoint is determined by minimizing the average vertical displacements of feature correspondences. The performance of the proposed approach is supported by extensive experiments in hallway and office environments. While the homing speed of robots using other approaches is constrained by the speed in the teaching phase, our robot is not bounded by such limit and can travel much faster without compromising the homing accuracy.

In this paper, a composite controller is proposed for single-link flexible manipulators exposed to external tip force disturbances. In the proposed scheme, the extended Kalman filter is utilized to observe the environmental forces and the Lyapunov redesign robust controller is applied to control the destabilizing effect of the observation errors in noisy situations. The observed force can be utilized in different applications (such as tele-surgical robotics) in order to eliminate the necessity of additional force sensors. This fact is important for structural miniaturization and cost reduction. The main contributions of this paper are (1) proposing a disturbance observation technique for in-contact flexible link manipulators (note that the challenge of Jacobian singularity is studied as a possible diverging factor of the observation) and (2) proposing the composite robust controller to eliminate the destabilizing effect of estimation errors. The advantages of the proposed control scheme over the conventional techniques are analyzed. Simulation results are given for a single-link flexible manipulator to illustrate the effectiveness of the composite control technique and experimental results are given to validate the performance of the observation method.

We developed a novel small rat-like robot called Waseda Rat No. 4 (WR-4) to interact with real rats. WR-4 can perform both rearing (rising up on its hind limbs) and rotating (body bending during movement) actions faster than live mature rats. After robot–rat interaction involving rearing and body grooming (body cuddling and head curling) actions of WR-4, real rats showed more activity and greater interest in the robot. Similar results evident from rat–rat interaction suggest that a rat-like robot is able to interact with rats in the same way as real rats. Furthermore, lower variances between the rat subjects in robot–rat interaction reveals that a rat-like robot can more effectively impact rat's behavior in a controllable, predictable way.

Bionic engineering has been a focus in the field of robotic researches. Inverse dynamic analysis is significant for the determination of dynamic parameters of bionic robots. The present paper uses a newly developed robot modular named Sambot to construct a caterpillar robotic mechanism, and designs a gait of trapezoidal wave locomotion for it. Two open-link models are put forth to simulate the dynamic behavior of such a locomotion. The inverse dynamic differential equations are derived by Kane's method and are then solved numerically by the Runge–Kutta method of the fourth order. Based on the numerical solutions of these differential equations, the applied joint torques required to produce the harmonic trapezoidal wave locomotion are determined finally, providing us important information on the gait control of the caterpillar robotic mechanism. Finally, the theoretical values of the joint torques are applied onto the present caterpillar mechanism to perform a locomotion experiment, which verifies the effectiveness of the present dynamics analysis.

The present paper presents a new approach to a leader–follower-based dynamic trajectory planning for multirobot formation. A near-optimal trajectory is generated for each robot in a decentralized manner. The main contributions of the current paper are the proposal of a new objective function that considers both collision avoidance and formation requirement for the trajectory generation, and an analytical solution of trajectory parameters in the trajectory optimization. Simulations and experiments on multirobots are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to the multirobot formation in a dynamic environment.

This paper addresses the orientation-singularity analysis and the orientationability evaluation of a special class of the Stewart–Gough parallel manipulators in which the moving and base platforms are two similar semi-symmetrical hexagons. Based on the half-angle transformation, an analytical polynomial of degree 13 that represents the orientation-singularity locus of this special class of parallel manipulators at a given position is derived. Graphical representations of the orientation-singularity locus of this class of manipulators are illustrated with examples to demonstrate the results. Based on the description of the orientation-singularity and nonsingular orientation region of this class of parallel manipulators, a performance index, referred to as orientationability, which describes the orientation capability of this class of manipulators at a given position, is introduced. A discretization algorithm is proposed for computing the orientationability of the special class of parallel manipulators at a given position in the workspace. Moreover, the effects of the design parameters and position parameters on the orientationability are also investigated in detail. Based on the orientationability performance index, another performance index, referred to as practical orientationability, representing the practical orientation capability of the manipulators at a given position, is introduced. In this performance index, singularities, the limitations of active and passive joints and link interferences are all taken into consideration. Furthermore, the practical orientationability of the special class of parallel manipulators studied here is also analyzed over several plane sections of the position-workspace in detail.
