Odometry errors, which occur during wheeled mobile robot movement, are inevitable as they originate from hard-to-avoid imperfections such as unequal wheels diameters, joints misalignment, backlash, slippage in encoder pulses, and much more. This paper extends the method, developed previously by the authors for calibration of differential mobile robots, to reduce positioning errors for the class of mobile robots having omnidirectional wheels. The method is built upon the easy to construct kinematic formulation of omnidirectional wheels, and is capable of compensating both systematic and non-systematic errors. The effectiveness of the method is experimentally investigated on a prototype three-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot. The validations include tracking unseen trajectories, self-rotation, as well as travelling over surface irregularities. Results show that the method is very effective in improving position errors by at least 68%. Since the method is simple to implement and has no assumption on the sources of errors, it should be considered seriously as a tool for calibrating omnidirectional mobile having any number of wheels.

This paper looks at the inverse kinematics problem of an a priori unknown 6R-Robot from the representation point of view. It describes a new representation of the Euclidean motion group. With this representation, the inverse kinematics problem can be treated entirely numerical. No symbolical methods are required.

Series elastic actuators have beneficial properties for some robot applications. Several recent implementations contain alternative placements of the compliant element to improve instrumentation design. We use a class 1 versus class 2 lever model and energy-port methods to demonstrate in this paper that these alternative placements should still be classified as series elastic actuators. We also note that the compliance of proximal series elastic actuators is reflected by an augmented gear ratio dependent on the nominal gear ratio, which is significant for small gear ratios and approaches unity for large gear ratios. This reflected compliance is shown to differ depending on the sign of the gear ratio. We demonstrate that although the reflected compliance is only marginally influenced by the magnitude of the gear ratio, there are several notable differences, particularly for small gear ratios.

This paper provides a general framework based on statistical design and Simulated Annealing (SA) optimization techniques for the development, analysis, and performance evaluation of forthcoming snake robot designs. A planar wheeled snake robot is considered, and the effect of its key design parameters on its performance while moving in serpentine locomotion is investigated. The goal is to minimize energy consumption and maximize distance traveled. Key kinematic and dynamic parameters as well as their corresponding range of values are identified. Derived dynamic and kinematic equations of n-link snake robot are used to perform simulation. Experimental design methodology is used for design characterization. Data are collected as per full factorial design. For both energy consumption and distance traveled, logarithmic, linear, and curvilinear regression models are generated and the best models are selected. Using analysis of variance, ANOVA, effects of parameters on performance of robots are determined. Next, using SA, optimum parameter levels of robots with different number of links to minimize energy consumption and maximize distance traveled are determined. Both single and multi-criteria objectives are considered. Webots and Matlab SimMechanics software are used to validate theoretical results. For the mathematical model and the selected range of values considered, results indicate that the proposed approach is quite effective and efficient in optimization of robot performance. This research extends the present knowledge in this field by identifying additional parameters having significant effect on snake robot performance.

Parallel kinematics machines (PKMs) can exhibit kinematics as well as actuation redundancy. While the meaning of kinematic redundancy has been already clarified for serial manipulators, actuation redundancy, which is only possible in PKMs, is differently classified in the literature. In this paper a consistent terminology for general redundant PKM is proposed. A kinematic model is introduced with the configuration space (c-space) as central part. The notion of kinematic redundancy is recalled for PKM. C-space, output, and input singularities are distinguished. The significance of the c-space geometry is emphasized, and it is pointed out geometrically that input singularities can be avoided by redundant actuation schemes. In order to distinguish different actuation schemes of PKM, a nonlinear control system is introduced whose dynamics evolves on c-space. The degree of actuation (DOA) is introduced as the number of independent control vector fields, and PKMs are classified as full-actuated and underactuated machines. Relating this DOA to degree of freedom allows to classify the actuation redundancy.

The combined motion of the human thumb, index and middle fingers while rotating a small object across the extended, intermediate and flexed planes with respect to the fingers was analyzed. Auto reflective markers were attached on the fingers to track their motion across three postures and planes via a 3D motion capture system. Central, right and left rotation postures were considered in each plane for investigation and the rotation experiments were performed with 30 healthy subjects. The obtained data were used to compute the finger joint angles. Based on the three criteria of (i) manipulability measure, (ii) major axis direction angle of the manipulability ellipsoid and (iii) ratio of the minor over major axis lengths, the collective behavior of the fingers was studied. It has been found after analysis that the thumb and middle finger were active, while the index finger operated passively when manipulating small objects in cooperative rotational motion across the three planes. Activeness refers to the independence of a digit in controlling the motion of an object whereas passiveness denotes its dependence on other digits. An active finger governs the motion of an object whereas a passive finger simply supports it. The results of this investigation are of great importance in planning treatment for rehabilitation and for designing controllers for robotic therapists, finger exoskeletons and prostheses.

The present paper addresses the issues that should be covered in order to develop walk-through programming techniques (i.e. a manual guidance of the robot) in an industrial scenario. First, an exact formulation of the dynamics of the tool the human should feel when interacting with the robot is presented. Then, the paper discusses a way to implement such dynamics on an industrial robot equipped with an open robot control system and a wrist force/torque sensor, as well as the safety issues related to the walk-through programming. In particular, two strategies that make use of admittance control to constrain the robot motion are presented. One slows down the robot when the velocity of the tool centre point exceeds a specified safety limit, the other one limits the robot workspace by way of virtual safety surfaces. Experimental results on a COMAU Smart Six robot are presented, showing the performance of the walk-through programming system endowed with the two proposed safety strategies.

This paper presents biped walking control using a library of optimal trajectories. Biped walking control is formulated as an optimal control problem. We use a parametric trajectory optimization method to find the periodic steady-state walking trajectory. As a second stage, we use Differential Dynamic Programming to generate a library of optimal trajectories and locally linear models of the optimal control law, which are used to construct a more global control law. The proposed controller is compared with a trajectory tracking controller using optimal gains. The utility and performance of the proposed method are evaluated using simulated walking control of a planar five-link biped robot.

In this paper the design and operation for a 2-Degree-of-Freedom, leg–wheel hybrid mobile robot are presented. A prototype of a low-cost and easy-to-use system, which is capable of straight walking and steering with two actuators only, has been designed and built. Simulation and experimental tests have been carried out to verify the engineering feasibility and operation of the proposed solution. The designed robot can be used for applications such as surveillance and inspection of disaster sites.

Frenet–Serret and Bishop rigid-body motions have many potential applications in robotics, graphics and computer-aided design. In order to study these motions, new characterisations in terms of their velocity twists are derived. This is extended to general motions based on any moving frame to a space curve. Furthermore, it is shown that any such general moving frame motion is the product of a Frenet–Serret motion with a rotation about the tangent vector.

These ideas are applied to a simple model of needle steering. A simple kinematic model of the path of the needle is derived. It is then shown that this leads to Frenet–Serret motions of the needle tip but with constant curvature. Finally, some remarks about curves with constant curvature are made.

We determine the shortest (minimal in length) path on a unicycle-like mobile robot in a known environment with smooth (possibly non-convex) obstacles with a constraint on curvature of their boundaries. Furthermore, we propose a new reactive randomized algorithm of robot navigation in unknown environment and prove that the robot will avoid collisions and reach a steady target with probability 1. The performance of our algorithm is confirmed by computer simulations and outdoor experiments with a Pioneer P3-DX mobile wheeled robot.

Addition of extra sensors, especially video cameras and force sensors, under control of appropriate software makes robotic manipulators working in factories suitable for a range of new applications. This paper presents a method of manipulator indirect force control development, in which the force set values are specified in the operational space and the manipulator is equipped with a force sensor in its wrist. Standard control development methods need the estimation of parameters of the detailed model of a manipulator and position servos, which is a complicated and time-consuming task. Hence, in this work a time-efficient hybrid procedure of controller development is proposed consisting of both analytical and experimental stages: proposal of an approximate continuous model of a manipulator, experimental determination and verification of its parameter values using the resonance phenomenon, continuous regulator development, and digitization of the regulator.

Among the many challenges to deal with, when a robot is interacting with its environment, friction at the contact surface and/or at the joints is one of the most important to be considered. In this paper we propose a control algorithm for the tracking of position and force (unconstrained orientation case only) of a manipulator end-effector that does not require the robot model for implementation. This characteristic has the advantage of making it capable to compensate friction effects without any previous estimation. Furthermore, no velocity measurements are needed, and the unit quaternion is employed for orientation control. Experimental and simulation results are provided.

This paper presents a dynamic-level control algorithm to meet simultaneously multiple desired tasks based on allocated priorities for redundant robotic systems. It is shown that this algorithm can be treated as a general framework to achieve control over the whole body of the robot. The control law is an extension of the well-known acceleration-based control to the redundant robots, and considers also possible interactions with the environment occurring at any point of the robot body. The stability of this algorithm is shown and some of the previously developed results are formulated using this approach. To handle the interaction on robot body, null space impedance control is developed within the multi-priority framework. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is evaluated by means of computer simulation.

This paper presents a solution for optimal trajectory planning problem of robotic manipulators with complicated dynamic equations. The main goal is to find the optimal path with maximum dynamic load carrying capacity (DLCC). Proposed method can be implemented to problems of both motion along a specified path and point-to-point motion. Dynamic Programming (DP) approach is applied to solve optimization problem and find the positions and velocities that minimize a pre-defined performance index. Unlike previous attempts, proposed method increases the speed of convergence by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) formulation. This formulation is used for solving problems with nonlinear constraints. Also, this paper proposes a new algorithm to design optimal trajectory with maximum DLCC for both fixed and mobile base mechanical manipulators. Algorithms for DLCC calculations in previous works were based on indirect optimization method or linear programming approach. The proposed trajectory planning method is applied to a linear tracked Puma and the mobile manipulator named Scout. Application of this algorithm is confirmed and simulation results are compared with experimental results for Scout robot. In experimental test, results are obtained using a new stereo vision system to determine the position of the robot end-effector.

This paper proposes a new visual control approach based on sinusoidal inputs to be used on a nonholonomic robot. We present several contributions: In our method, developed considering a unicycle kinematic model, sinusoids are used in such a way that the generated vehicle trajectories are feasible, smooth and versatile. Our technique improves previous sinusoidal-based control works in terms of efficiency and flexibility. As further contributions, we present analytical expressions for the evolution of the robot's state, and propose a new state-feedback control law based on these expressions. All the information used in the control scheme is obtained from omnidirectional vision by means of the one-dimensional trifocal tensor. Stability analysis of the proposed approach is presented, and its performance is illustrated through experiments.

In this paper, the force control of a constrained one-link flexible arm is investigated using a feedback parallel compensation algorithm based on a linear distributed parameter model with internal damping of Kelvin–Voigt type. Generally, the non-collocation of the joint torque input and the tip contact force output comes along with the non-minimum phase in nature. To overcome this inherent limitation, a new input induced by the measurement of root-bending moment and its derivative, and a virtual contact force output generated by a parallel compensator are defined. Therefore, the transfer function from the new input to the virtual contact force output is proved not only strictly minimum phase but also in a stable condition. A PD controller then improves the performance of the overall closed-loop system. Furthermore, the perfect asymptotic tracking of a desired contact force trajectory with internal stability can be achieved accurately. The exact solutions of the infinite-dimensional system are obtained using the infinite product formulation. The proposed system promises stability robustness to parameter uncertainties, also free of spillover problems. Numerical simulations are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We present a simple biologically inspired strategy for the navigation of a unicycle-like robot towards a target while avoiding collisions with moving obstacles. A mathematically rigorous analysis of the proposed approach is provided. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated via experiments with a real robot and extensive computer simulations.

We introduce a novel probabilistic algorithm (CPRM) for real-time motion planning in the configuration space ${\EuScript C}$. Our algorithm differs from a probabilistic road map (PRM) algorithm in the motion between a pair of anchoring points (local planner) which takes place on the boundary of the obstacle subspace ${\EuScript O}$. We define a varying potential field f on ∂${\EuScript O}$ as a Morse function and follow $\vec{\nabla} f$. We then exemplify our algorithm on a redundant worm climbing robot with n degrees of freedom and compare our algorithm running results with those of the PRM.
