This paper is concerned with the resolution of an inverse problem related to the recovery of a function $V$ from the source to solution map of the semi-linear equation $(\Box _{g}+V)u+u^{3}=0$ on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold $({\mathcal{M}},g)$. We first study the simpler model problem, where $({\mathcal{M}},g)$ is the Minkowski space, and prove the unique recovery of $V$ through the use of geometric optics and a three-fold wave interaction arising from the cubic non-linearity. Subsequently, the result is generalized to globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds by using Gaussian beams.
Under an assumption on the existence of $p$-adic Galois representations, we carry out Taylor–Wiles patching (in the derived category) for the completed homology of the locally symmetric spaces associated with $\operatorname{GL}_{n}$ over a number field. We use our construction, and some new results in non-commutative algebra, to show that standard conjectures on completed homology imply ‘big $R=\text{big}~\mathbb{T}$’ theorems in situations where one cannot hope to appeal to the Zariski density of classical points (in contrast to all previous results of this kind). In the case where $n=2$ and $p$ splits completely in the number field, we relate our construction to the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$.
We generalize Uhlenbeck’s generator theorem of ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{U}_{n}$ to the full rational loop group ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{GL}_{n}\mathbb{C}$ and its subgroups ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{GL}_{n}\mathbb{R}$, ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{U}_{p,q}$: they are all generated by just simple projective loops. Recall that Terng–Uhlenbeck studied the dressing actions of such projective loops as generalized Bäcklund transformations for integrable systems. Our result makes a nice supplement: any rational dressing is the composition of these Bäcklund transformations. This conclusion is surprising in the sense that Lie theory suggests the indispensable role of nilpotent loops in the case of noncompact reality conditions, and nilpotent dressings appear quite complicated and mysterious. The sacrifice is to introduce some extra fake singularities. So we also propose a set of generators if fake singularities are forbidden. A very geometric and physical construction of $\operatorname{U}_{p,q}$ is obtained as a by-product, generalizing the classical construction of unitary groups.
We completely classify the possible extensions between semistable vector bundles on the Fargues–Fontaine curve (over an algebraically closed perfectoid field), in terms of a simple condition on Harder–Narasimhan (HN) polygons. Our arguments rely on a careful study of various moduli spaces of bundle maps, which we define and analyze using Scholze’s language of diamonds. This analysis reduces our main results to a somewhat involved combinatorial problem, which we then solve via a reinterpretation in terms of the Euclidean geometry of HN polygons.
Let $n$ be either $2$ or an odd integer greater than $1$, and fix a prime $p>2(n+1)$. Under standard ‘adequate image’ assumptions, we show that the set of components of $n$-dimensional $p$-adic potentially semistable local Galois deformation rings that are seen by potentially automorphic compatible systems of polarizable Galois representations over some CM field is independent of the particular global situation. We also (under the same assumption on $n$) improve on the main potential automorphy result of Barnet-Lamb et al. [Potential automorphy and change of weight, Ann. of Math. (2)179(2) (2014), 501–609], replacing ‘potentially diagonalizable’ by ‘potentially globally realizable’.
Suppose that $G$ is a simple reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross–Wallach). In a previous paper, we gave an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$ along the unipotent radical of the Heisenberg parabolic. In this paper, we give the Fourier expansion of the minimal modular form $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{Gan}$ on quaternionic $E_{8}$ and some applications. The $Sym^{8}(V_{2})$-valued automorphic function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{Gan}$ is a weight 4, level one modular form on $E_{8}$, which has been studied by Gan. The applications we give are the construction of special modular forms on quaternionic $E_{7},E_{6}$ and $G_{2}$. We also discuss a family of degenerate Heisenberg Eisenstein series on the groups $G$, which may be thought of as an analogue to the quaternionic exceptional groups of the holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series on the groups $\operatorname{GSp}_{2n}$.
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. Let $\overline{r}:G_{F}\rightarrow \text{GL}_{2}(\overline{\mathbf{F}}_{p})$ be a modular Galois representation that satisfies the Taylor–Wiles hypotheses and is tamely ramified and generic at a place $v$ above $p$. Let $\mathfrak{m}$ be the corresponding Hecke eigensystem. We describe the $\mathfrak{m}$-torsion in the $\text{mod}\,p$ cohomology of Shimura curves with full congruence level at $v$ as a $\text{GL}_{2}(k_{v})$-representation. In particular, it only depends on $\overline{r}|_{I_{F_{v}}}$ and its Jordan–Hölder factors appear with multiplicity one. The main ingredients are a description of the submodule structure for generic $\text{GL}_{2}(\mathbf{F}_{q})$-projective envelopes and the multiplicity one results of Emerton, Gee and Savitt [Lattices in the cohomology of Shimura curves, Invent. Math.200(1) (2015), 1–96].
We examine 2-complexes $X$ with the property that for any compact connected $Y$, and immersion $Y\rightarrow X$, either $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(Y)\leqslant 0$ or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}Y=1$. The mapping torus of an endomorphism of a free group has this property. Every irreducible 3-manifold with boundary has a spine with this property. We show that the fundamental group of any 2-complex with this property is locally indicable. We outline evidence supporting the conjecture that this property implies coherence. We connect the property to asphericity. Finally, we prove coherence for 2-complexes with a stricter form of this property. As a corollary, every one-relator group with torsion is coherent.
In this article, we study some Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators with a polynomial potential $V(q)$ of degree greater than two having quadratic limiting behaviour. This work provides an accurate global subelliptic estimate for Kramers–Fokker–Planck operators under some conditions imposed on the potential.
The following theorem, which includes as very special cases results of Jouanolou and Hrushovski on algebraic $D$-varieties on the one hand, and of Cantat on rational dynamics on the other, is established: Working over a field of characteristic zero, suppose $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{1},\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{2}:Z\rightarrow X$ are dominant rational maps from an (possibly nonreduced) irreducible scheme $Z$ of finite type to an algebraic variety $X$, with the property that there are infinitely many hypersurfaces on $X$ whose scheme-theoretic inverse images under $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{1}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{2}$ agree. Then there is a nonconstant rational function $g$ on $X$ such that $g\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{1}=g\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{2}$. In the case where $Z$ is also reduced, the scheme-theoretic inverse image can be replaced by the proper transform. A partial result is obtained in positive characteristic. Applications include an extension of the Jouanolou–Hrushovski theorem to generalised algebraic ${\mathcal{D}}$-varieties and of Cantat’s theorem to self-correspondences.
