Summary

MAATSUYKER ISLANDS, Tas. (mat-sye-kă or mat-soo-kă), 43 37S 146 20E (map 7), a group of small islands that are the southernmost point of the Australian continent. They were discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642 and named by him after a Dutch official. The main islands of the group are De Witt Island (354 m), Maatsuyker Island (296 m), Flat Witch Island, Flat Top Island, Round Top Island, Walker Island, Needle Rocks and Mewstone. They are inhabited by penguins, seals, sea lions and numerous seabirds.

MACALISTER RIVER, Vic. (mă-kal-listă), a tributary of the thomson river (map 16) discovered by Angus McMillan in 1839 and named by him after Lachlan Macalister, a pioneer of the goulburn region who had backed his expedition. The Macalister rises on the southern slopes of the great dividing range and flows generally southward to lake glenmaggie. It then swings south-eastward, flowing past maffra before joining the Thomson upstream from sale.

MACARTHUR, ACT (mă-kah-thă, a southern suburb (pop. 1304) of the City of canberra to the north-east of chisholm (map 22A:C6). It was named after John Macarthur, of Rum Rebellion and wool promotion fame.

MACARTHUR, Vic. (mă-kah-thă), 38O2S 142 00E (map 15), a township (pop. 297) in warrnambool Shire in the western district.

McARTHUR RIVER, NT (mă-kahthă), a stream that rises in the barkly tableland (map 3) to the north of anthony lagoon and enters the gulf of carpentaria near the SIR edward pellew group.
