Epidemiological studies have reported an association between the planetary health diet (PHD), diet-related greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs), and mortality. However, data from individuals from non-Western countries was limited. Therefore, we aimed to examine this association among Japanese individuals using a cross-sectional ecological study of all 47 prefectures in Japan. Prefecture-level data were obtained from government surveys. The dietary amount was estimated based on the weight of food purchased (211 items) from the 2021–2023 Family Income and Expenditure Survey. Adherence to PHD was scored using the EAT-Lancet index (range, 0 [worst] to 42 [best]) and categorised into four groups: ≤ 24 (n = 14, low), 25 (n = 17, medium-low), 26 (n = 10, medium-high), and 27 points (n = 6, high). Diet-related GHGEs were estimated using previously developed GHGE tables for each food item. Mortality data were obtained using the 2022 Vital Statistics. Mortality rate ratio (RR) was calculated using a multivariate Poisson regression model. After adjusting for confounders, compared to the prefecture in the medium-low group of adherence score, those in the low and high groups were associated with a higher mortality RR for all-cause (low group: RR = 1.03 [95% CI (confidence interval) = 1.01–1.05]; high group: RR = 1.03 [95% CI = 1.00–1.07]) and pneumonia. Moreover, although a higher adherence score was inversely associated with GHGE, it was linked to an increased mortality risk from heart disease and stroke. Our findings indicate a reverse J-shaped association between adherence to PHD and mortality.
We examined the direct and indirect associations between home literacy environment (HLE) and children’s listening comprehension and word reading in Chinese. Three hundred forty-seven Chinese kindergarten children (mean age = 74.01 months, 50% female) were tested on measures of pinyin letter knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, word reading, and listening comprehension. Their parents completed a questionnaire about their socioeconomic status and the three aspects of HLE (code-related and meaning-related HLE, access to literacy resources). Results of path analysis showed that access to literacy resources was indirectly associated with both listening comprehension and word reading through the effects of phonological awareness and vocabulary. These findings suggest that in the early phases of language and literacy development, print materials in the home may be important not only for written-language skills but also for oral-language skills.
Severe Ebstein’s disease often necessitates early neonatal surgical intervention, although, in some patients, surgery may be delayed until infancy or later, and medical management may be undertaken instead. Various indicators, such as tricuspid regurgitation flow velocity, have been studied to predict single or biventricular circulation; however, indicators predicting the need for neonatal surgery have not been addressed. We aimed to identify predictive indices for neonatal surgical necessity by analysing the clinical characteristics of those requiring and not requiring neonatal surgery. We enrolled eight patients with severe Ebstein’s disease who were born at our hospital from 2018 to 2023. Four patients underwent neonatal surgery (Group S), whereas four did not (Group F). We compared pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal clinical courses and laboratory indices before and after birth between the groups. The systolic/diastolic time ratio, an index of ventricular function calculated from the TR waveform of echocardiography at birth, was significantly prolonged in Group S [2.18 ± 0.31 vs. 1.72 ± 0.20 in Group F (p = 0.043)]. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.94, with a threshold systolic/diastolic time ratio value of 1.99 using Youden’s method. This ratio predicted neonatal surgery necessity with 100% sensitivity and 75% specificity. Despite the small sample size, we demonstrated that the systolic/diastolic time ratio is a valuable predictive index of ventricular function and prognosis in severe Ebstein’s disease patients. A systolic/diastolic time ratio <2, determined from the tricuspid regurgitation waveform on echocardiography at birth, supports patient monitoring without surgical intervention through the newborn period and beyond.

When I first read Inoue Hisashi's novel My Friend Frois in “All Yomimono” magazine some 25 years ago, I was immediately taken with its importance as a recreation of Japanese history. As always with Inoue's work, what also struck me was his erudition, insight and wit.
While the traditional Japanese diet has been suggested to increase blood pressure due to its high Na content, whether the contemporary Japanese diet is associated with blood pressure remains elusive. We developed a traditional Japanese diet score (nine items: white rice, miso soup, soy products, vegetables, mushrooms, seaweeds, fish, salty food and green tea) and a modified version by substituting white rice with whole-grain rice, reverse scoring for salty food and adding fruits, raw vegetables and dairy products using data from 12 213 employees from Japanese companies. Hypertension was defined as a blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or more or the use of antihypertensive drugs. A multi-level Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator was used to calculate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95 % CI while adjusting for covariates. The adjusted PR (95 % CI) of hypertension for the lowest through highest quartiles of the traditional Japanese diet score were 1·00 (reference), 0·94 (0·88, 1·02), 0·98 (0·90, 1·06) and 0·96 (0·90, 1·02), respectively (P for trend = 0·29), while those for the modified Japanese diet score were 1·00 (reference), 0·96 (0·94, 0·99), 0·95 (0·85, 1·05) and 0·94 (0·87, 1·01), respectively (P for trend = 0·10). In this cross-sectional study, close adherence to the traditional Japanese diet was not associated with the prevalence of hypertension, whereas there was a suggestion of an inverse association between the modified Japanese diet and the prevalence of hypertension.
Obesity during development has been reported to be a determinant factor in the future development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Parental obesity is suggested to be a predictor of children’s obesity, and it is important to consider parental factors to prevent NCDs in the progeny. Previously, we showed that paternal height had a stronger association with infant birth weight than paternal body mass index (BMI) in the Japanese population. However, only a few studies have examined the association between paternal physique and postnatal obesity. This study aimed to investigate the association between parental physique and obesity in children at the age of 3. This study used fixed data on 33,291 parent–child pairs from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, an ongoing national birth cohort study. The association between paternal physique (BMI and height) and children’s obesity at the age of 3 was examined using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The higher the paternal BMI quartiles, the higher the odds ratio for obesity in male and female children at 3 years of age (P < 0.0001). However, paternal height quartiles were not associated with male or female obesity. These results differ from the association between paternal physique and infant birth weight, and it is possible that prenatal epigenetic and environmental factors of paternal origin were responsible for the differences between these two studies. The association between paternal BMI and obesity in children at the age of 3 suggests that paternal factors may be involved in the development of NCDs in future progeny.
The aim of this study was to assess the association between fish intake, n-3 PUFA, n-6 PUFA and risk of disabling dementia.
Design:
Prospective cohort.
Setting:
Municipalities within the Japan Public Health Centre-based Prospective Study.
Participants:
43 651 participants: (20 002 men and 23 649 women).
Results:
Exposure intake of fish, n-3 and n-6 PUFA was evaluated in 1995–1997. We defined disabling dementia cases as participants who were certified to receive disability care under the long-term-care insurance programme (2006–2016) in participating municipalities with a grade of activities of daily living related to dementia ≥ IIa on the dementia rating scale (range 0–IV and M). Cox proportional hazard models were applied to obtain hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI according to quartiles of exposures of interest. In the main analysis, we adjusted for age and area, smoking, BMI, alcohol and metabolic equivalent tasks. During 410 350 person-years of follow-up with an average follow-up of 9·4 years, 5278 cases of disabling dementia were diagnosed. Fish intake and most PUFA were not associated with the risk of disabling dementia in men. In women, n-6 PUFA showed a significant decreasing trend in risk the highest HR (95 % CI) compared with the lowest was 0·90 (0·81, 0·99) (P for trend = 0·024) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) was 0·91 (0·82, 1·00) (P for trend = 0·043).
Conclusions:
Our findings suggest no association with fish in general and only n-6 PUFA and ALA may be associated with a decreased risk of disabling dementia especially in women.
Donald Trump's plan for a more muscular US nuclear posture got a ringing endorsement from the increasingly right-wing government of Japan. Not long after the Trump administration released its Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) in early February, Foreign Minister Taro Kono said he “highly appreciates” the new approach to US nuclear weapons policy, including the emphasis on low-yield nuclear options the United States and Japan can rely on to respond to non-nuclear threats.
Japan was known as the home of a strong middle-class in the affluent 1980s, the fruits of its prosperous economy distributed more equitably than in many comparable high-income countries. Yet strictly speaking, contrary to popular perception, Japan was not that “egalitarian.” However, public credence was set and the Wall Street Journal (1989) to tellingly (if hyperbolically) characterize this secure society with impressive equality and principled values as “the only communist nation that works.” Then, sea changes followed. This once “egalitarian” society is now widely (not least in Japan) recognized as a kakusa shakai (unequal society) in which income and wealth have become more unequally distributed than in many advanced economies. While widening wealth gap between rich and poor is a global trend as shown in the graph by Thomas Piketty and his co-researchers (Figure 1.1), in the case of Japan, in recent decades this has been accompanied by economic stagnation, rising levels of poverty, precarity, and public debt grafted on top of population aging. Against these backdrops, the second Abe Shinzō government started its economic policies, proclaimed as Abenomics, in an effort “to sustainably revive the Japanese economy” that was promised to trickle-down to all. Five years on, evaluations have taken place on the Abe program centered on hyper monetary easing, fiscal stimuli, and structural reform.

The year 2022 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japan. This article examines the Japan Civil Liberties Union's 1955 solidarity activism on occupied Okinawa, which generated Japanese civil society's first awakening to the “Okinawa problem.” The Asahi Shinbun's front-page article on the organization's publication “Human Rights Problems in Okinawa” and its follow-up coverage triggered public debate influencing Japan/U.S. official policies on Okinawa. Drawing on archival evidence, the article illuminates the contested nature of Japanese activism caught between Cold War Asia and decolonizing Asia. It argues that the 1955 activist movement shaped the subsequent trajectory of Japanese engagement with the “Okinawa problem.”
Although family factors are considered important for children’s language acquisition, the evidence comes primarily from affluent societies. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relations between family factors (family’s socioeconomic status [SES], home literacy activities, access to print resources, and parental beliefs) and children’s vocabulary knowledge in both urban and rural settings in China. Data from 366 children (urban group: 109, 4.85 years; rural group: 257, 4.89 years) were collected. Results showed that whereas family’s SES significantly predicted access to print resources and children’s vocabulary knowledge in the rural group, parental beliefs directly predicted children’s vocabulary knowledge in the urban group. Multigroup analysis showed that the associations of family’s SES and access to print resources with children’s vocabulary knowledge were stronger in the rural group than in the urban group. Our findings highlight the importance of considering contextual settings when conceptualising the role of family factors in children’s language acquisition.
We present a re-discovery of G278.94+1.35a as possibly one of the largest known Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) – that we name Diprotodon. While previously established as a Galactic SNR, Diprotodon is visible in our new Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) radio continuum images at an angular size of $3{{{{.\!^\circ}}}}33\times3{{{{.\!^\circ}}}}23$, much larger than previously measured. At the previously suggested distance of 2.7 kpc, this implies a diameter of 157$\times$152 pc. This size would qualify Diprotodon as the largest known SNR and pushes our estimates of SNR sizes to the upper limits. We investigate the environment in which the SNR is located and examine various scenarios that might explain such a large and relatively bright SNR appearance. We find that Diprotodon is most likely at a much closer distance of $\sim$1 kpc, implying its diameter is 58$\times$56 pc and it is in the radiative evolutionary phase. We also present a new Fermi-LAT data analysis that confirms the angular extent of the SNR in gamma rays. The origin of the high-energy emission remains somewhat puzzling, and the scenarios we explore reveal new puzzles, given this unexpected and unique observation of a seemingly evolved SNR having a hard GeV spectrum with no breaks. We explore both leptonic and hadronic scenarios, as well as the possibility that the high-energy emission arises from the leftover particle population of a historic pulsar wind nebula.
On January 1, 2024, an earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, causing significant casualties and displacement. The Noto Peninsula has a high aging rate, with 49.5% of its population aged 65 or older. This case study focuses on a 68-year-old woman who developed aspiration pneumonia after being admitted to a welfare shelter. The case highlights the challenges of managing chronic medical care during disasters, particularly for the elderly.
We propose a method for generating rule sets as global and local explanations for tree-ensemble learning methods using answer set programming (ASP). To this end, we adopt a decompositional approach where the split structures of the base decision trees are exploited in the construction of rules, which in turn are assessed using pattern mining methods encoded in ASP to extract explanatory rules. For global explanations, candidate rules are chosen from the entire trained tree-ensemble models, whereas for local explanations, candidate rules are selected by only considering rules that are relevant to the particular predicted instance. We show how user-defined constraints and preferences can be represented declaratively in ASP to allow for transparent and flexible rule set generation, and how rules can be used as explanations to help the user better understand the models. Experimental evaluation with real-world datasets and popular tree-ensemble algorithms demonstrates that our approach is applicable to a wide range of classification tasks.
Coping styles can be improved by dyadic palliative care interventions and may alleviate patients’ and family caregivers’ distress. Moreover, family caregivers’ preloss resilience protects against depression after bereavement. This study aimed to determine the types of coping styles can be encouraged to increase resilience.
Methods
A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to family caregivers at the 4 palliative care units, and their resilience was assessed using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and their coping styles were assessed using the Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced, as well as their background characteristics.
Results
Among 291 caregivers with a mean CD-RISC score of 56.2 (standard deviation: 16.13), internal locus of control, educational level, and history of psychotropic drug use were associated with resilience. After adjusting for the aforementioned factors, more frequent use of positive coping styles such as active coping (Spearman’s ρ = 0.29), acceptance (ρ = 0.29), positive reframing (ρ = 0.29), planning (ρ = 0.24), and humor (ρ = 0.18), was found to be associated with higher resilience. On the contrary, more frequent use of negative coping styles such as behavioral disengagement (ρ = −0.38), self-blame (ρ = −0.27), and denial (ρ = −0.14) was found to be associated with less resilience.
Significance of results
By assessing internal locus of control, educational level, and history of psychotropic medication use of family caregivers, as factors associated with their respective resilience, may help identify less resilient family caregivers who are at risk for developing major depression after bereavement. In addition, coping skill-based educational interventions targeting patients and their family caregivers that focus on specific coping styles associated with resilience may increase family caregivers’ resilience, resulting in less emotional distress and a lower risk of major depression after bereavement.
Lottocracy and epistocracy have received deeply insightful attention as political regimes. Herein, by conducting an experiment using an online survey, we explored the extent to which public opinion is receptive to political decisions under various regimes regarding two environmental policies: education policy and environmental tax policy. By doing so, we examined whether the presence of tax burdens affected the acceptability of political regimes, i.e., electoral democracy, lottocracy, and epistocracy. Our results revealed that decisions based on lottocracy and epistocracy were significantly less acceptable than those based on electoral democracy. Nevertheless, lottocratic and epistocratic decisions were more acceptable regarding the issue of environmental tax policy. The difference was mainly attributed to people's rejection of environmental tax policy offsetting their rejection of lottocracy and epistocracy. This suggests, first, that decisions based on electoral democracy increase policies' acceptability if they do not involve taxation, and second, that the status of whether or not a decision is electoral does not significantly affect policy acceptability if taxation is involved, whereas on the other hand, people are sensitive to differences between the regimes if the policy does not involve taxation.
In recent years many essays have been made public and various opinions have been advanced on youth. I would like to conceive one of the salient characteristics in the consciousness and the behavior pattern of today's youth as “play-orientedness” and center my discussion on that particular inclination. “Play-orientedness” here is not intended to mean merely “activeness in sports and hobbies,” nor is it synonymous with “pleasure-orientedness.” It is a broader term and is rather close in meaning to what is commonly called “the spirit of play.” We might perhaps define it as “play as a way of life,” or an inclination to introduce elements of “play” into one's daily life and make his actual life “play-like.”
Cation-exchange equilibrium for Ca-K-montmorillonite was studied at 35°, 50°, and 90°C and at three total normalities of the equilibrium solution (0.1, 0.05, and 0.01 N). Changes of the standard free energy for the exchange from K-montmorillonite to Ca-montmorillonite were determined to be −53, −270, and −393 cal/eq at 35°, 50°, and 90°C, respectively. Changes of the standard enthalpy and entropy were 1.7 kcal/eq and 5.6 cal/eq/degree at 35°C, respectively. The sign of the change of the standard free energy was found to be determined mainly by the entropy change, in particular, by the hydration entropy of the cations.
The calculation of the excess functions indicates that the mixing model of Ca-K-montmorillonite approximates that of a regular solution. Montmorillonite having potassium equivalent ion fraction of 0.1 to 0.7 consists of a random interstratification of Ca-montmorillonite (15.6 Å) and K-montmorillonite (12.6 Å).
