Objective:
The Immigrant Health Paradox (IHP) suggests that immigrants have better health upon arrival in comparison to their U.S.-born Latinx counterparts, indicating that immigrants’ unique experiences may buffer against negative health outcomes, including cognition. Some studies indicate that IHP-related cognitive health benefits diminish with increased time spent in the U.S., while others suggest that this relationship may be age-dependent such that compared to migration during earlier or later life, migration during young/middle adulthood may be related to better cognition-potentially due to higher simultaneous cognitive demands associated with this age epoch (e.g., language acquisition, acculturation). However, this literature is equivocal and has methodological limitations (e.g., cognition typically assessed with cognitive screeners, lack of clinical populations) Thus, this study aimed to examine the role of age related to IHP and cognition within a well-characterized sample of HIV+ Latinx adults. It was hypothesized that compared to U.S.-born Latinx adults and those who immigrated earlier or later in life, the Latinx immigrant subgroup who migrated during young/middle adulthood would demonstrate better cognitive functioning.
Participants and Methods:This cross-sectional study included a HIV+ sample (A/=105) of 34 Latinx immigrants (Mage=45.56, SD=6.99) and 71 U.S.-born Latinx individuals (Mage=46.03, SD=7.63), who completed a comprehensive sociocultural questionnaire and cognitive battery. Demographically-adjusted average T-scores were computed for each cognitive test and domain (e.g., learning, memory). A series of Welch’s-corrected ANOVAS with post hoc Games-Howell tests for multiple comparisons were conducted to compare cognitive function across three groups: Latinx immigrants who migrated during earlier (<19 yrs) or later adulthood (>50 yrs), young/middle adulthood (20-49 yrs), and U.S.-born Latinx adults.
Results:Compared to the other Latinx subgroups, Latinx immigrants who migrated during middle adulthood performed worse in Verbal Fluency (F(2,98)=8.04, p<.001), Attention/Working Memory (f(2,96)=6.10, p<.01), Executive Function (f(2,99)=5.11, p<.01), and Processing Speed (F(2,101)=3.36, p<.05). Posthoc Games-Howell tests showed that the mean Verbal Fluency (p<.01, 95% C.I.=[-21.37, -2.66]), Attention/Working Memory (p<.05, 95% C.I.=[-16.82, -1.59]), Executive Function (p<.01, 95% C.I.=[-14.66, -2.49]) and Processing Speed (p<.05, 95% C.I.=[-13.60, -1.31]) T-scores were significantly lower in Latinx immigrants who migrated in young/middle adulthood compared to the U.S.-born Latinx sample. Further, there were no differences between the U.S.-born Latinx group compared to the Latinx immigrant group who migrated earlier or later in life (ps>.05).
Conclusions:This preliminary study is the first to examine whether the potential protective cognitive effects of the IHP vary across the lifespan among Latinx immigrants with HIV, using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Age-related IHP benefits were not observed in this study. Moreover, Latinx immigrants who migrated during young/middle adulthood had worse cognitive functioning compared to their U.S.-born Latinx counterparts and those that migrated earlier or later in life. A possible explanation for this study’s unexpected findings is that the IHP is outdated due to the current sociopolitical climate immigrants experience compared to the 1980s when the theory was developed. Future studies, with larger samples, longitudinal designs, and greater sociocultural characterization (e.g., immigration reason/s, country of origin, discrimination), are needed to better understand the role of IHP in cognition.

Objective:
Appropriate adjustments to normative data for neuropsychological (NP) tests are imperative for their equitable use in brain health practices. Age and education are known to be strong predictors of test performance. In settings where validated tests are not available, common practice has been to adapt and apply them in similar fashion as settings where they were developed. However, demographic adjustments cannot be assumed de facto to be universal in their strength and domain associations. For example, South Africa (SA) and Zimbabwe are neighboring countries with some similarities in their demographic makeup, but with vastly different sociopolitical trajectories- Zimbabwe was colonially occupied until 1980 and SA was oppressed under Apartheid until 1994- which have impacted access to and quality of education by severely limiting educational opportunities for native citizens. The present study explored whether the direction and strength of relationships between age and education on NP test performance were similar or not between SA and Zimbabwe adults living with and without HIV.
Participants and Methods:Data was extracted from two IRB-approved studies in SA and Zimbabwe with similar inclusion and exclusion criteria. The SA sample (n=214) was comprised of 56% females, 48% HIV-positive adults, mean age of 34 years, and a nine-year range in education (3-14 years). The Zimbabwe sample (n=212) was comprised of 68% females, 67% HIV-positive adults, mean age of 36 years, and a thirteen-year range in education (7-20 years). Participants completed NeuroScreen, a tablet-based battery of 12 brief NP tests adapted for indigenous SA and Zimbabwe languages. The two study samples were analyzed separately. Zero order correlations between each of the tests and age and gender were conducted to determine the influence of the demographic variables. Relationships with moderate correlations (r>0.3) in both samples were further analyzed using univariate ANOVA to examine the main effects and interactions of age and education
Results:Overall, there was a similar pattern of results across samples, with nine tests showing no-to-low associative relationships with age and education respectively. Moderate, significant relationships were found between age, education and three tests of processing speed (Visual Discrimination A, Visual discrimination B, and Number Speed) in both samples. Age and education had different effects on Visual discrimination A across samples with a significant main effect for age but not education in SA [F(40,83)=3.060, p<0.01], whilst Zimbabwe had a significant main effect for education but not age [F(10,87)=4.541, p<0.01]. Visual Discrimination B and Number Speed showed significant main effects for both variables in both samples. However, there was a significant interaction for both tests in Zimbabwe only.
Conclusions:The current study is novel in its exploration of country-specific relationships between NP test performance and demographic factors in settings where assessment science is emergent. Results demonstrate the presence of differential relationships between demographic variables on test performance which raises questions about the source of these differences. One important potential source is the socio-cultural context of each country and the intersection of demographic factors in these contexts. Further research is required to explore these considerations.
Associations of dietary and lifestyle inflammation scores with mortality due to CVD, cancer, and all causes among Black and White American men and women

One potential mechanism by which diet and lifestyle may affect chronic disease risk and subsequent mortality is through chronic systemic inflammation. In this study, we investigated whether the inflammatory potentials of diet and lifestyle, separately and combined, were associated with all-cause, all-CVD and all-cancer mortality risk. We analysed data on 18 484 (of whom 4103 died during follow-up) Black and White men and women aged ≥45 years from the prospective REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study. Using baseline (2003–2007) Block 98 FFQ and lifestyle questionnaire data, we constructed the previously validated inflammation biomarker panel-weighted, 19-component dietary inflammation score (DIS) and 4-component lifestyle inflammation score (LIS) to reflect the overall inflammatory potential of diet and lifestyle. From multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, the hazards ratios (HR) and their 95 % CI for the DIS–all-cause mortality and LIS–all-cause mortality risk associations were 1·32 (95 % CI (1·18, 1·47); P for trend < 0·01) and 1·25 (95 % CI (1·12, 1·38); P for trend < 0·01), respectively, among those in the highest relative to the lowest quintiles. The findings were similar by sex and race and for all-cancer mortality, but weaker for all-CVD mortality. The joint HR for all-cause mortality among those in the highest relative to the lowest quintiles of both the DIS and LIS was 1·91 (95 % CI 1·57, 2·33) (P for interaction < 0·01). Diet and lifestyle, via their contributions to systemic inflammation, separately, but perhaps especially jointly, may be associated with higher mortality risk among men and women.
Performance of tank-mix partners with isoxaflutole across the Cotton Belt

BASF Corp. has developed p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor–resistant cotton and soybean that will allow growers to use isoxaflutole in future weed management programs. In 2019 and 2020, a multi-state non-crop research project was conducted to examine weed control following isoxaflutole applied preemergence alone and with several tank-mix partners at high and low labeled rates. At 28 d after treatment (DAT), Palmer amaranth was controlled ≥95% at six of seven locations with isoxaflutole plus the high rate of diuron or fluridone. These same combinations provided the greatest control 42 DAT at four of seven locations. Where large crabgrass was present, isoxaflutole plus the high rate of diuron, fluridone, pendimethalin, or S-metolachlor or isoxaflutole plus the low rate of fluometuron controlled large crabgrass ≥95% in two of three locations 28 DAT. In two of three locations, isoxaflutole plus the high rate of pendimethalin or S-metolachlor improved large crabgrass control 42 DAT when compared to isoxaflutole alone. At 21 DAT, morningglory was controlled ≥95% at all locations with isoxaflutole plus the high rate of diuron and at three of four locations with isoxaflutole plus the high rate of fluometuron. At 42 DAT at all locations, isoxaflutole plus diuron or fluridone and isoxaflutole plus the high rate of fluometuron improved morningglory control compared to isoxaflutole alone. These results suggest that isoxaflutole applied preemergence alone or in tank mixture is efficacious on a number of cross-spectrum annual weeds in cotton, and extended weed control may be achieved when isoxaflutole is tank-mixed with several soil-residual herbicides.
RSA reactivity to parent-child conflict as a predictor of dysregulated emotion and behavior in daily life

Background
Individual variability in tonic (resting) and phasic (reactivity) respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) may underlie risk for dysregulated emotion and behavior, two transdiagnostic indicators that permeate most psychological disorders in youth. The interaction between tonic and phasic RSA may specify unique physiological profiles during the transition to adolescence. The current study utilized clinically referred youth (Mage = 12.03; s.d. = 0.92) to examine baseline RSA, RSA reactivity, and their interaction as predictors of dysregulated emotion and behavior in daily life.
MethodParticipants were 162 youth (47% female; 60% minority) in psychiatric treatment for any mood or behavior problem. RSA was assessed during three, 2-minute baselines and an 8-minute parent-child conflict discussion task. Dysregulated emotion and behavior were assessed during a 4-day ecological momentary assessment protocol that included 10 time-based prompts over a long weekend.
ResultsGreater RSA withdrawal to the conflict was associated with dysregulated basic emotion (sadness, anger, nervousness, stress) in daily life. Two distinct interactions also emerged, such that baseline RSA was related to dysregulated complex emotion (shame, guilt, loneliness, emptiness) and dysregulated behavior as a function of RSA reactivity to conflict. Lower baseline RSA and greater RSA withdrawal were associated with dysregulated complex emotion, while higher baseline RSA and greater RSA withdrawal were associated with dysregulated behavior.
ConclusionsFindings point to physiological profiles that increase the risk of dysregulated emotion and behavior during the transition to adolescence. Excessive RSA withdrawal uniquely, and in combination with baseline RSA, increased risk for dysregulation in daily life, underscoring the role of autonomic stress responding as a risk factor for psychopathology.

Summary
The 12,000 km2 inland Azraq basin in north-central Jordanian plateau experienced through the late Pleistocene and early Holocene a steppic environment, with a spring-fed oasis at its centre. A project was undertaken to examine late Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlement in this region and the impact of late Pleistocene and early Holocene climate change on its resources. Small-scale excavations were conducted at eighteen sites of which ten were late Upper Palaeolithic and Epipalaeolithic (~30-13 ka cal BP). Of particular interest are two extensive seasonal aggregation sites (Jilat 6 and Kharaneh IV), which appear to have been occupied just after the LGM. This chapter focuses on the stone tool industries identified and their implications for hunter-gatherer interactions across the region. Points of interest include the very early occurrence of backed bladelet industries and of the microburin technique for truncating backed tools, and the presence of several Epipalaeolithic occupations, which contained relatively few microlithic tools. Many of the industries were regionally distinctive and only the Natufian had strong affinities with west of the Rift Valley assemblages.
Growth, Development, and Morphological Differences among Native and Nonnative Prickly Nightshades (Solanum spp.) of the Southeastern United States

Prickly nightshades are troublesome weeds of natural habitats, pastures, feedlots, right-of-ways, and croplands. Native and nonnative invasive weedy species of prickly nightshades were compared to determine growth, development, and morphological differences. Six (Solanum bahamense, Solanum capsicoides, Solanum carolinense, Solanum dimidiatum, Solanum donianum, and Solanum pumilum) of the 18 species of prickly nightshades studied are native to the US. Two species, Solanum citrullifolium and Solanum rostratum, are annuals; the others are perennials or are short lived perennials or annuals in northern extremes of their range in North America. Tables were developed from new and existing data to differentiate vegetative and reproductive characteristics among 18 species of prickly nightshade found in the southeastern US. In greenhouse experiments, average plant height ranged from 24 and 26 cm (9.45 and 10.24 inch) for S. carolinense and Solanum jamaicense, respectively, to 100 and 105 cm for Solanum tampicense and Solanum sisymbriifolium, respectively at 10 wk after emergence (WAE). By 10 WAE, the average number of leaves per plant ranged from < 10 for S. carolinense and Solanum torvum to > 40 leaves/plant for S. rostratum and S. dimidiatum. Average number of nodes/plant main stem ranged from 11, 12, and 14 nodes in S. jamaicense, S. torvum, and S. carolinense, respectively, to 54 nodes in S. rostratum. Average plant dry weights were collected at 10 WAE and were greatest for Solanum mammosum and (> 17 g/plant) (0.6001 oz/plant) and least for S. carolinense (1 g/plant). Based on these data, nightshade growth rate and dry weight were variable among some species and variability may be a result of phenology and life cycles, annual or perennial. Plants of S. rostratum, an annual, were relatively tall and produced high number of nodes and leaves and had the shortest period from emergence to flower among the prickly nightshades evaluated.
Ecotype Variability and Edaphic Characteristics for Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) Populations in Mississippi

Cogongrass is a highly invasive, perennial grass that is found on all continents, except Antarctica. It continues to spread at an alarming rate in the southeastern United States. Cogongrass has been reported from a wide array of habitats; however, soils from areas where cogongrass grows have never been characterized. Live cogongrass plants, herbarium specimens, and soil samples were collected from 53 cogongrass populations from across the 10 physiographic regions and land use areas in Mississippi. Cogongrass leaf and inflorescence morphology varied among sites, and plants were found in soils varying widely in texture (ranging from 28 to 86% sand, 3 to 48% silt, and 6 to 43% clay), organic matter content (ranging from 0.9 to 5.0%), pH (ranging from 4.4 to 8.0), and nutrient status: 6 to 190 kg ha−1 (15 to 470 lb A−1) of phosphorus (P), 46 to 734 kg ha−1 of potassium (K), 150 to 7,620 kg ha−1 of calcium (Ca), 26 to 1,090 kg ha−1 of magnesium (Mg), 1 to 190 kg ha−1 of zinc (Zn), 145 to 800 kg ha−1 of estimated sulfur (S) based on organic matter, and 57 to 300 kg ha−1 of sodium (Na). These soil parameters were highly variable among cogongrass populations, even within physiographic regions or land use areas, and encompassed much of the soil physiochemical diversity within the state. Soil characteristics were significantly correlated with leaf length (Ca, K, Mg, P, Zn, and percentage of sand and silt), leaf width (Ca, P, Mg, and percentage of sand and silt), the leaf length-to-width ratio (K and P), inflorescence length (Na, P, and pH), inflorescence width (S, organic matter, and pH), and the inflorescence length-to-width ratio (S and organic matter). These data indicate that cogongrass is able to establish, emerge, grow, and reproduce on a wide array of soils in Mississippi. This ability provides cogongrass an advantage over other plant species that are more limited in the soil types that support their growth.

Affordable, high quality SiC wafers are very desirable for a variety of new technologies including GaN based lighting, RF, and high-power electronics based on wide band gap materials. At Litton Airtron we have a major effort in the growth and characterization of SiC. We will present data on 35, 50 and 75-mm diameter crystals. We are growing both n-type, semiinsulating 4H, 6H, and 15R material. A variety of characterization techniques are being used at Litton Airtron to determine wafer quality. These include Raman microscopy, digital wafer photography, and crossed polarizer images. Raman spectroscopy is an excellent probe of polytype and carrier concentration for n-type materials; in addition it can be done at room temperature and is sufficiently fast that it can be used in an industrial environment. The use of digital photography allows for the collection of images that can be quantitatively analyzed and archived.
