Tubular halloysite from Wagon Wheel Gap, Colorado and spheroidal halloysite from Redwood County, Minnesota were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Clay samples were prepared by the following techniques: drop-mounted suspension on carbon support films; thin sections of clay in Araldite epoxy resin; and carbon-platinum-palladium single-stage replicas.
Both types of dehydrated halloysite have interlayer separations between packets of layers. Halloysite tubes are composed of packets as thin as five layers which sometimes reveal a rolled interior configuration in cross-sectional view. Thicker tubes are composed of many layers per packet. Some large tubes appear in cross section as folded packets of layers. The interior morphology of spheroidal halloysite particles is more irregular and the layer structure is more discontinuous than in most tubes. The spheroidal halloysite of this study is characterized by external tangential plates with hexagonal shape suggestive of kaolinite.
The stability of smectite separated from a Houston Black clay soil was studied by solubility methods in an acid environment. High Silicon levels (supersaturated with respect to amorphous Si) probably were due to dissolution of the smectite and slow precipitation of amorphous Silicon. Also, mica and vermiculite impurities may have contributed to high solution Si values. Solubility data from equilibrium solutions of various treatments and chemical structural analyses permitted the formulation of a solubility equation. The ΔG°f for the Houston Black smectite computed from pK values was —2433.9 ± 0.8 kcal/mole. The stability of this clay could then be determined by calculations for any desired solution environment. It was found that under some conditions this soil smectite could be more stable than Belle Fourche and Aberdeen montmorillonites. Therefore, it appears that this soil clay has the required stability area in which it can form in nature.
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Our objective is to develop a Telenephrology dashboard for the 150,000 Veterans that obtain care through the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Our goal is to create a comprehensive and user-friendly tool for monitoring kidney health and facilitating remote nephrology consultations. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We structured our intervention according to the five stages of human-centered design: (1) Empathize, (2) Define, (3) Ideate, (4) Prototype and (5) Test. During the empathy stage, the principal investigator spent 10 hours immersed in the clinical setting observing how nephrologists approach a remote nephrology consultation. These observations were augmented by unstructured interviews with clinicians and patients to better understand the process and dynamics. Following this, a rapid ideation workshop was convened to generate creative solutions that balance technical requirements with the needs of clinicians and patients. These led to rapid prototyping and testing to identify what elements of the prototypes worked and which needed improvement. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Through the empathy and define stages, three needs were identified: (1) clarity in visualizing data, (2) accuracy of information, and (3) balancing standardization with individualization. During the rapid ideation workshop, the concept of a four-frame dashboard was settled upon. This led to the creation of five prototypes, which were tested. These were reconciled and modified to make a final product. This final product, the Telenephrology Dashboard, contains 5 elements that support nephrologists and supporting staff: (1) a graph of kidney function over time, (2) tables synthesizing lab data, (3) options to drill down events to specific times, (4) customization of views, and (5) integration of kidney disease progression models. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: A Telenephrology dashboard was created to facilitate remote nephrology consultations through a Human-Centered Design process. Our next steps include determining if this dashboard may improve end-user satisfaction, referring clinician satisfaction, access to specialist care, and patient outcomes.
Mineralogical weathering sequences in sediments overlying lignite beds were investigated in a core (27 m deep) from Calvert, Robertson County, northeast Texas. Weathering trends were evaluated based on the properties and relative distributions of both the expandable and non-expandable minerals. The sulfide minerals in these sediments are the most susceptible to weathering and were only observed in the unaltered (reduced) zone below 7 m. Oxidation of the sulfides has resulted in the formation of jarosite and gypsum in the upper 7 m of the core (oxidized zone). The oxidized zone is further characterized by reddish brown colors (high chroma), a greater quantity of dithionite-extractable iron, and absence of chlorite. Although the major clay minerals in these sediments (smectite, kaolinite, mica) are largely detrital, weathering has resulted in an increase in the content of kaolinite and a decrease in the content of mica towards the surface. The mica appears to have altered to a high-charge smectite characterized by basal spacings of 32 Â after intercalation with octadecylammonium cations. The high-charge smectite is most abundant in the soil horizons at the top of the core and gradually decreases with depth. A low-charge smectite is the most abundant species in the un weathered parent sediments and increases with depth. Key Words—Lignite, Oxidation, Reclamation, Smectite, Soil, Weathering.
The mineralogy of partially kaolinized strata interbedded with lignite at the San Miguel mine, Atascosa County, Texas, was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and optical and scanning electron microscopy. The San Miguel lignite occurs in the lower Jackson Group (late Eocene) of southern Texas. Based on mineralogical and micromorphological data, some of these clay partings are probably volcanic in origin and were exposed to variable degrees of in situ kaolinization in a swamp environment. Coexistence of kaolinite, clinoptilolite, and opal-CT in several of these strata suggests that the partially kaolinized volcanic layers were subjected to a subsequent resilication process following burial. Kaolinite is the dominant mineral in the oldest and most kaolinized volcanic layer (underclay) below the lowest lignite bed (seam D). The kaolinite exhibits a well-developed vermicular morphology. The youngest volcanic layer, which occurs stratigraphically above the uppermost lignite seam, is characterized by pseudomorphs of volcanic glass shards and consists mainly of clinoptilolite. Movement of siliceous ground water from this layer to the underlying strata apparently provided silica-rich solutions from which opal-CT and large (as long as 300 μm) euhedral crystals of clinoptilolite precipitated in the fossilized plant roots, veinlets, and fractures within the underlying strata. Micromorphological relationships between the Sirich (opal-CT and clinoptilolite) and sulfide (marcasite and pyrite) minerals in the fossil roots and fractures suggest that the marcasite formed before and pyrite after the resilication process.
A mineralogical investigation by X-ray powder diffraction and optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy of partially weathered petrified wood in the Yegua Formation (Eocene) of east-central Texas revealed that microcrystalline quartz present in the unaltered petrified wood has been gradually dissolved and replaced by disordered silica polymorphs (mainly opal-CT) as a result of weathering. This replacement suggests that the reaction sequence: opal-A → opal-CT → quartz, which has been described elsewhere to occur during diagenetic alteration of petrified wood, is apparently reversed when the petrified wood is exposed to low-energy weathering conditions. The relatively high rate of dissolution of the quartz in the petrified wood appears to be related to its small crystallite size. The silica released by the dissolution of the quartz is subsequently reprecipitated as disordered cristobalite-tridymite (opal-CT) and poorly crystalline silica (opal-A) that, in turn, probably converts to opal-CT on aging. Opal-CT is the major silica phase in the completely altered powdery material enclosing the partially weathered petrified wood. The intermediate zone between the altered and unaltered zones contains both quartz and opal-CT.
Many of the presently oxidized Georgia kaolins probably existed originally in the reduced (gray) state. For that reason, the distribution of iron sulfides in presently gray kaolins may elucidate features observed in oxidized kaolins. An understanding of the nature of gray kaolins may also aid in the development of processing strategies for the exploitation of these abundant resources. The size, morphology, and degree of crystallite bonding of iron sulfides (pyrite and marcasite) in three gray kaolin cores from the Macon, Georgia kaolin district were examined by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, and other physical and chemical methods. Pyrite and marcasite were identified as dominantly gravel- and sand-size equant crystals and crystal aggregates, rather than as framboids. Pyrite crystals commonly showed rough octahedral faces, which extended over minor cube faces. Locally, spiral growth dislocations were also observed. Marcasite was found in radiating, prismatic, and tabular crystals. In general, the marcasite crystal aggregates were much more fragile than those of pyrite. The dominance of octahedral crystal shapes and textures of the pyrite suggest inorganic precipitation from solutions supersaturated with respect to octahedral crystal faces.
A kaolinite-rich bed (tonstein) and an associated bentonite in the upper part of Yegua Formation at College Station, east-central Texas, were formed by in situ weathering processes in a late Eocene swamp. X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, petrographic studies, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy not only show that dioctahedral smectite and coarsely crystalline kaolinite are the dominant minerals in the bentonite and tonstein, respectively, but that cryptocrystalline halloysite and kaolinite are localized along the weathering front (transitional zone) between the tonstein and the bentonite. As weathering progressed, the cryptocrystalline minerals gradually recrystallized to yield the coarse books and vermicular growths of kaolinite characteristic of the tonstein.
Small amounts of cristobalite, sanidine, and euhedral zircon crystals with liquid or gaseous inclusions accord with the formation of the bentonite by alteration of volcanic ash. Clinoptilolite in the lignitic layer and sandstone below the bentonite probably formed from ions that were released during alteration of the volcanic materials to smectite, but clinoptilolite in the tonstein and overlying strata appear to have formed after kaolinization of the bentonite.
One Tertiary and two Cretaceous gray kaolin sites in Georgia were examined using X-ray radiography of core sections to determine the processes of formation of the deposits. The Tertiary kaolin was oxidized in the upper 3 m of the deposit and reduced below that point. The two Cretaceous kaolins were reduced from the top of the deposit to an abrupt boundary with oxidized red kaolin below. Radiography of the first Cretaceous core revealed thin laminar bedding in the gray kaolin and in the underlying red kaolin. The laminae continue without interruption across the gray kaolin/red kaolin boundary. The laminae were not visible in the gray kaolin except in radiographs. Sedimentary bedding was not observed visually or radiographically at the Tertiary site nor in sections of the core from the second Cretaceous site where kaolinite was recrystallized to large vermiforms. The original sedimentary structure in the first Cretaceous kaolin was preserved possibly due to the inhibition of kaolinite recrystallization by a higher organic matter content. Recrystallization of kaolinite and iron compounds may have destroyed sedimentary structures in part or all of the other two kaolin cores. It is hypothesized that the first Cretaceous physical and biological mixing. The same hypothesis may apply to the other two kaolins but recrystallization after deposition has destroyed sedimentary structures.
Improving the timeline for intervention in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has considerable potential to delay and mitigate disability and suffering. Neuropsychological assessment is useful for distinguishing AD from normal aging and other dementias but is less useful in preclinical detection due to its limited sensitivity. The N400 (N4), a language-based EEG event-related potential (ERP) related to semantic functioning, is a promising candidate marker of AD with potential to improve early detection and monitoring of AD. For example, studies have shown that individuals with AD show a reduced N4 "effect"—a smaller difference in the size of the N4 to semantically congruent vs. incongruent word-pairs. The goal of this study is to assess the presence of the N4 effect in healthy seniors, and those with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild AD, and to evaluate associations between performance on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the N4 across these samples.
Participants and Methods:
Fifty older adults (intact=27, combined MCI/mild AD group=23; "impaired") completed neuropsychological testing, including the RBANS, as part of a larger study. Participants were re-contacted and returned for EEG assessment between several weeks to one year later. During EEG recording, participants completed a word-pair judgement paradigm, which involved distinguishing between semantically congruent and incongruent word-pairs. Data was collected and analyzed according to customized N4 analysis scripts provided as part of ERPCORE, an online resource for acquiring and analyzing common ERP components (Kappenman et al., 2021; https://osf.io/thsqg/). The change in N4 amplitude between congruent and incongruent trials (the N4 effect) was used as an index of participants' semantic functioning. Participants' N4 effect was quantified using the mean amplitude from 300-550 milliseconds poststimulus at electrode Cz.
Results:
Repeated measures ANOVAs indicated a significant effect of trial type on the N400 amplitude in the intact individuals (F(1, 26)=77.66, p<.001), which remained significant in the sample as a whole (F(1, 48)=65.18, p<.001). Although intact participants numerically showed a larger N4 effect (intact: M=-4.02, SD=2.37; impaired: M=-2.60, SD=3.40), the expected group-by-trial interaction was not significant (F(1, 48)=3.01, p=.089). Correlational analyses revealed no significant associations between the N4 effect and the RBANS Total Scale scores (r=-.14, p=.32), nor for the Immediate Memory (r=-.002, p=.99), Visuospatial/Constructional (r=-.069, p=.63), Language (r=-.15, p=.30) Attention (r=-.21, p=.14), or Delayed Memory (r=-.18 p=.58) indexes.
Conclusions:
Results confirmed the presence of the N4 effect in intact participants and in the sample as a whole. Although the N4 effect was numerically smaller in the impaired group as expected, this difference was not significant in the present sample. Likewise, we observed no evidence for associations between the size of N4 effect and performance on RBANS indexes. Overall, the present study provides mixed evidence for the utility of the N4 as a biomarker in mild AD. Factors that may have contributed to the lack of associations between the N4 effect and the RBANS include the limited sample size and variable lengths of time between participants' initial cognitive assessments and EEG testing.
The Arcanum mission is a proposed L-class mother-daughter spacecraft configuration for the Neptunian system, the mass and volume of which have been maximised to highlight the wide-ranging science the next generation of launch vehicles will enable. The spacecraft is designed to address a long-neglected but high-value region of the outer Solar System, showing that current advances make such a mission more feasible than ever before. This paper adds to a series on Arcanum and specifically provides progress on the study of areas identified as critical weaknesses by the 2013–2022 decadal survey and areas relevant to the recently published Voyage 2050 recommendations to the European Space Agency (ESA).
Word list-learning tasks are commonly used to evaluate auditory-verbal learning and memory. However, different frequencies of word usage, subtle meaning nuances, unique word phonology, and different preexisting associations among words make translation across languages difficult. We administered lists of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) nonword trigrams to independent American and Italian young adult samples. We evaluated whether an auditory list-learning task using CVC nonword trigrams instead of words could be applied cross-culturally to evaluate similar learning and associative memory processes.
Participants and Methods:
Seventy-five native English-speaking (USA) and 104 native Italian-speaking (Italy) university students were administered 15-item lists of CVC trigrams using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test paradigm with five study-test trials, an interference trial, and short- and long-term delayed recall. Bayesian t tests and mixed-design ANOVAs contrasted the primary learning indexes across the two samples and biological sex.
Results:
Performance was comparable between nationalities on all primary memory indices except the interference trial (List B), where the Italian group recalled approximately one item more than the American sample. For both nationalities, recall increased across the five learning trials and declined significantly on the postinterference trial, demonstrating susceptibility to retroactive interference. No effects of sex, age, vocabulary, or depressive symptoms were observed.
Conclusions:
Using lists of unfamiliar nonword CVC trigrams, Italian and American younger adults showed a similar performance pattern across immediate and delayed recall trials. Whereas word list-learning performance is typically affected by cultural, demographic, mood, and cognitive factors, this trigram list-learning task does not show such effects, demonstrating its utility for cross-cultural memory assessment.
Shallow firn cores, in addition to a near-basal ice core, were recovered in 2018 from the Quelccaya ice cap (5470 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Vilcanota, Peru, and in 2017 from the Nevado Illimani glacier (6350 m a.s.l) in the Cordillera Real, Bolivia. The two sites are ~450 km apart. Despite meltwater percolation resulting from warming, particle-based trace element records (e.g. Fe, Mg, K) in the Quelccaya and Illimani shallow cores retain well-preserved signals. The firn core chronologies, established independently by annual layer counting, show a convincing overlap indicating the two records contain comparable signals and therefore capture similar regional scale climatology. Trace element records at a ~1–4 cm resolution provide past records of anthropogenic emissions, dust sources, volcanic emissions, evaporite salts and marine-sourced air masses. Using novel ultra-high-resolution (120 μm) laser technology, we identify annual layer thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 0.8 cm in a section of 2000-year-old radiocarbon-dated near-basal ice which compared to the previous annual layer estimates suggests that Quelccaya ice cores drilled to bedrock may be older than previously suggested by depth-age models. With the information collected from this study in combination with past studies, we emphasize the importance of collecting new surface-to-bedrock ice cores from at least the Quelccaya ice cap, in particular, due to its projected disappearance as soon as the 2050s.
Barrett’s oesophagus (BE) is the precursor of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, which has become the most common type of oesophageal cancer in many Western populations. Existing evidence on diet and risk of BE predominantly comes from case–control studies, which are subject to recall bias in measurement of diet. We aimed to investigate the potential effect of diet, including macronutrients, carotenoids, food groups, specific food items, beverages and dietary scores, on risk of BE in over 20 000 participants of the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Diet at baseline (1990–1994) was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. The outcome was BE diagnosed between baseline and follow-up (2007–2010). Logistic regression models were used to estimate OR and 95 % CI for diet in relation to risk of BE. Intakes of leafy vegetables and fruit were inversely associated with risk of BE (highest v. lowest quartile: OR = 0·59; CI: 0·38, 0·94; P-trend = 0·02 and OR = 0·58; CI: 0·37, 0·93; P-trend = 0·02 respectively), as were dietary fibre and carotenoids. Stronger associations were observed for food than the nutrients found in them. Positive associations were observed for discretionary food (OR = 1·54; CI: 0·97, 2·44; P-trend = 0·04) and total fat intake (OR per 10 g/d = 1·11; CI: 1·00, 1·23), the association for fat was less robust in sensitivity analyses. No association was observed for meat, protein, dairy products or diet scores. Diet is a potential modifiable risk factor for BE. Public health and clinical guidelines that incorporate dietary recommendations could contribute to reduction in risk of BE and, thereby, oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), a globally important pest of Brassicaceae crops, migrates into all provinces of Canada annually. Life tables were used to determine the mortality levels contributed by the parasitoid complexes associated with diamondback moth in British Columbia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and insular Newfoundland. Overall, diamondback moth populations showed high generational mortality (> 90%) in all provinces, although parasitism levels were generally low. The net reproductive rate of increase in diamondback moth was less than 1.0 (populations declined) in both years in British Columbia and in each of two years in Newfoundland and Ontario, but it was greater than 1.0 in all three years in Prince Edward Island. Lower parasitism levels were found in Prince Edward Island (3.0–6.3%) compared with other provinces (8.4–17.6%, except one year in British Columbia). Diadegma insulare was the main larval parasitoid found; it was present in all provinces. Microplitis plutellae was present in all provinces except British Columbia. Oomyzus sokolowskii was found in British Columbia and Ontario. The parasitoid community documented from sentinel sampling was less diverse than that found through destructive sampling. Hypotheses are provided to explain the presence of major parasitoids. Increasing larval parasitism would have the largest effect on diamondback moth population growth in Canada.
To examine associations between diet and risk of developing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Design:
Prospective cohort with a median follow-up of 15·8 years. Baseline diet was measured using a FFQ. GERD was defined as self-reported current or history of daily heartburn or acid regurgitation beginning at least 2 years after baseline. Sex-specific logistic regressions were performed to estimate OR for GERD associated with diet quality scores and intakes of nutrients, food groups and individual foods and beverages. The effect of substituting saturated fat for monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat on GERD risk was examined.
Setting:
Melbourne, Australia.
Participants:
A cohort of 20 926 participants (62 % women) aged 40–59 years at recruitment between 1990 and 1994.
Results:
For men, total fat intake was associated with increased risk of GERD (OR 1·05 per 5 g/d; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·09; P = 0·016), whereas total carbohydrate (OR 0·89 per 30 g/d; 95 % CI 0·82, 0·98; P = 0·010) and starch intakes (OR 0·84 per 30 g/d; 95 % CI 0·75, 0·94; P = 0·005) were associated with reduced risk. Nutrients were not associated with risk for women. For both sexes, substituting saturated fat for polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat did not change risk. For both sexes, fish, chicken, cruciferous vegetables and carbonated beverages were associated with increased risk, whereas total fruit and citrus were associated with reduced risk. No association was observed with diet quality scores.
Conclusions:
Diet is a possible risk factor for GERD, but food considered as triggers of GERD symptoms might not necessarily contribute to disease development. Potential differential associations for men and women warrant further investigation.
Understanding risk factors for death from Covid-19 is key to providing good quality clinical care. We assessed the presenting characteristics of the ‘first wave’ of patients with Covid-19 at Royal Oldham Hospital, UK and undertook logistic regression modelling to investigate factors associated with death. Of 470 patients admitted, 169 (36%) died. The median age was 71 years (interquartile range 57–82), and 255 (54.3%) were men. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (n = 218, 46.4%), diabetes (n = 143, 30.4%) and chronic neurological disease (n = 123, 26.1%). The most frequent complications were acute kidney injury (AKI) (n = 157, 33.4%) and myocardial injury (n = 21, 4.5%). Forty-three (9.1%) patients required intubation and ventilation, and 39 (8.3%) received non-invasive ventilation. Independent risk factors for death were increasing age (odds ratio (OR) per 10 year increase above 40 years 1.87, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.57–2.27), hypertension (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.10–2.70), cancer (OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.27–3.81), platelets <150 × 103/μl (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.13–3.30), C-reactive protein ≥100 μg/ml (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.05–2.68), >50% chest radiograph infiltrates (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.16–3.77) and AKI (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.64–4.13). There was no independent association between death and gender, ethnicity, deprivation level, fever, SpO2/FiO2, lymphopoenia or other comorbidities. These findings will inform clinical and shared decision making, including use of respiratory support and therapeutic agents.
There are above 170 PICUs in the UK, most of them being gender mix or male only. There is no specific data available about management of patients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in PICUs.
Objective
Review of sociodemographic, clinical, outcome characteristics, care pathways and financial implications when managing BPD population in Female PICU.
Aims
To measure rates of compliance with NICE guidelines using such criteria as: comprehensive care plan provided on admission to PICU and at discharge from PICU; patient being involved in discussion about discharge plans; specialist assessment / treatment started before admission to Female PICU was continued during the admission; referral for psychological therapies was considered/made during stay in Female PICU; prescribing practice by referring and admitting teams; availability of specialist Personality Disorders (PD) services locally.
Methods
Retrospective cross sectional review of patient records.
Results
76% of patients are admitted to Female PICU with a comprehensive multi-disciplinary care plan. 80% of patients transition from ECH was discussed carefully with the patient beforehand. Specialist assessment/treatment started before admission to ECH was continued during the admission 100%. Most of the patients would receive treatment by various psychotropic meds prior and during the admission. Referrals to psychological therapies were considered for 19% of patients. There is a lack of specialist PD services.
Conclusions
BPD is the most costly population in comparison with other patient groups in Female PICU which requires multidisciplinary team input, specialist services involvement, better adherence to NICE guidelines, support and training for MDT.
A modest body of research has emerged documenting the characteristics of 170 PICU populations in the UK (2006). No specific data is available about Crisis Management of patients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in Female PICUs.
Objective
To offer the first service evaluation project in the UK of the BPD group in PICU and to review compliance with the NICE guidelines, ‘Borderline Personality Disorder: Treatment and Management’, 2009.

Results
The project included data of 46 admissions (from 2007 to 2010). Ninety-seven percent of patients were White British. The median length of involvement with mental health services prior to the first admission to ECH was 12 years. Seventy percent of patients showed mixed engagement with services. All patients presented with complex needs, all were detained under the Mental Health Act. The commonest primary reason for admission was self harm or threatening behavior. Seventysix percent of patients were provided with the copy of the multi-disciplinary care plan at the time of admission. Antipsychotic polypharmacy and prescription of antidepressants was reduced during the admission. In 80% of admissions discharge planning was discussed with the patient and documented. In 54% of discharges the care coordinator was involved and at discharge 26% of patients were informal.
Conclusions
Specific target criteria in the NICE guidelines were not complied with fully. For 85% of admissions the initial purpose of admission was fully achieved.
