Around 1000 years ago, Madagascar experienced the collapse of populations of large vertebrates that ultimately resulted in many species going extinct. The factors that led to this collapse appear to have differed regionally, but in some ways, key processes were similar across the island. This review evaluates four hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the loss of large vertebrates on Madagascar: Overkill, aridification, synergy, and subsistence shift. We explore regional differences in the paths to extinction and the significance of a prolonged extinction window across the island. The data suggest that people who arrived early and depended on hunting, fishing, and foraging had little effect on Madagascar’s large endemic vertebrates. Megafaunal decline was triggered initially by aridification in the driest bioclimatic zone, and by the arrival of farmers and herders in the wetter bioclimatic zones. Ultimately, it was the expansion of agropastoralism across both wet and dry regions that drove large endemic vertebrates to extinction everywhere.
The prevalence of youth anxiety and depression has increased globally, with limited causal explanations. Long-term physical health conditions (LTCs) affect 20–40% of youth, with rates also rising. LTCs are associated with higher rates of youth depression and anxiety; however, it is uncertain whether observed associations are causal or explained by unmeasured confounding or reverse causation.
Methods
Using data from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and Norwegian National Patient Registry, we investigated phenotypic associations between childhood LTCs, and depression and anxiety diagnoses in youth (<19 years), defined using ICD-10 diagnoses and self-rated measures. We then conducted two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses using SNPs associated with childhood LTCs from existing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as instrumental variables. Outcomes were: (i) diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders or elevated symptoms in MoBa, and (ii) youth-onset MDD using summary statistics from a GWAS in iPSYCH2015 cohort.
Results
Having any childhood LTC phenotype was associated with elevated youth MDD (OR = 1.48 [95% CIs 1.19, 1.85], p = 4.2×10−4) and anxiety disorder risk (OR = 1.44 [1.20, 1.73], p = 7.9×10−5). Observational and MR analyses in MoBa were consistent with a causal relationship between migraine and depression (IVW OR = 1.38 [1.19, 1.60], pFDR = 1.8x10−4). MR analyses using iPSYCH2015 did not support a causal link between LTC genetic liabilities and youth-onset depression or in the reverse direction.
Conclusions
Childhood LTCs are associated with depression and anxiety in youth, however, little evidence of causation between LTCs genetic liability and youth depression/anxiety was identified from MR analyses, except for migraine.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an evidenced based treatment for adults with treatment resistant depression (TRD). The standard clinical protocol for TMS is to stimulate the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Although the DLPFC is a defining region in the cognitive control network of the brain and implicated in executive functions such as attention and working memory, we lack knowledge about whether TMS improves cognitive function independent of depression symptoms. This exploratory analysis sought to address this gap in knowledge by assessing changes in attention before and after completion of a standard treatment with TMS in Veterans with TRD.
Participants and Methods:
Participants consisted of 7 Veterans (14.3% female; age M = 46.14, SD = 7.15; years education M = 16.86, SD = 3.02) who completed a full 30-session course of TMS treatment and had significant depressive symptoms at baseline (Patient Health Questionnaire-9; PHQ-9 score >5). Participants were given neurocognitive assessments measuring aspects of attention [Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4th Edition (WAIS-IV) subtests: Digits Forward, Digits Backward, and Number Sequencing) at baseline and again after completion of TMS treatment. The relationship between pre and post scores were examined using paired-samples t-test for continuous variables and a linear regression to covary for depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is often comorbid with depression in Veteran populations.
Results:
There was a significant improvement in Digit Span Forward (p=.01, d=-.53), but not Digit Span Backward (p=.06) and Number Sequencing (p=.54) post-TMS treatment. Depression severity was not a significant predictor of performance on Digit Span Forward (f(1,5)=.29, p=.61) after TMS treatment. PTSD severity was also not a significant predictor of performance on Digit Span Forward (f(1,5)=1.31, p=.32).
Conclusions:
Findings suggested that a standard course of TMS improves less demanding measures of working memory after a full course of TMS, but possibly not the more demanding aspects of working memory. This improvement in cognitive function was independent of improvements in depression and PTSD symptoms. Further investigation in a larger sample and with direct neuroimaging measures of cognitive function is warranted.
Communities with high levels of social capital enjoy an array of positive economic and community development outcomes. We assess the role of several key community characteristics, including the strength of government institutions, in explaining local social capital variation. The analysis draws on data from United States counties and includes regression modelling and a Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition to explore differences in social capital across an area’s metropolitan status and region. The data show social capital determinants vary by place both due to the endowment levels of these determinants and the productive value of their coefficients. For example, the coefficient productive values of government capacity explain some differences in social capital levels across metropolitan status (but not across region). Concurrently, variations in government capacity endowment levels help explain some differences in social capital levels across region (but not across metropolitan status).
A new fossil site in a previously unexplored part of western Madagascar (the Beanka Protected Area) has yielded remains of many recently extinct vertebrates, including giant lemurs (Babakotia radofilai, Palaeopropithecus kelyus, Pachylemur sp., and Archaeolemur edwardsi), carnivores (Cryptoprocta spelea), the aardvark-like Plesiorycteropus sp., and giant ground cuckoos (Coua). Many of these represent considerable range extensions. Extant species that were extirpated from the region (e.g., Prolemur simus) are also present. Calibrated radiocarbon ages for 10 bones from extinct primates span the last three millennia. The largely undisturbed taphonomy of bone deposits supports the interpretation that many specimens fell in from a rock ledge above the entrance. Some primates and other mammals may have been prey items of avian predators, but human predation is also evident. Strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) suggest that fossils were local to the area. Pottery sherds and bones of extinct and extant vertebrates with cut and chop marks indicate human activity in previous centuries. Scarcity of charcoal and human artifacts suggests only occasional visitation to the site by humans. The fossil assemblage from this site is unusual in that, while it contains many sloth lemurs, it lacks ratites, hippopotami, and crocodiles typical of nearly all other Holocene subfossil sites on Madagascar.
This collection of essays pays tribute to Nancy Freeman Regalado, a ground-breaking scholar in the field of medieval French literature whose research has always pushed beyond disciplinary boundaries. The articles in the volume reflect the depth and diversity of her scholarship, as well as her collaborations with literary critics, philologists, historians, art historians, musicologists, and vocalists - in France, England, and the United States. Inspired by her most recent work, these twenty-four essays are tied together by a single question, rich in ramifications: how does performance shape our understanding of medieval and pre-modern literature and culture, whether the nature of that performance is visual, linguistic, theatrical, musical, religious, didactic, socio-political, or editorial? The studies presented here invite us to look afresh at the interrelationship of audience, author, text, and artifact, to imagine new ways of conceptualizing the creation, transmission, and reception of medieval literature, music, and art.

Correlation of lower Cambrian strata is often confounded by provincialism of key fauna. The widespread occurrence of the micromollusc Watsonella crosbyi Grabau, 1900 is therefore an important biostratigraphic signpost with potential for international correlation of lower Cambrian successions. Previous correlations of W. crosbyi from Australia (Normanville Group) suggested an Atdabanian- to Botoman-equivalent age. However, in the upper part of the Mount Terrible Formation, stratigraphic ranges of W. crosbyi and Aldanella sp. cf. golubevi overlap prior to the incoming of vertically burrowed ‘piperock’, which is indicative of an age no earlier than Cambrian Stage 2. The stratigraphic range of W. crosbyi in the Normanville Group, South Australia correlates with the ranges of the taxon in China, France, Mongolia and Siberia (though not Newfoundland). The new Australian data add further support for considering the first occurrence of W. crosbyi a good potential candidate for defining the base of Cambrian Stage 2. The stratigraphic range of W. crosbyi through the lower Cambrian Normanville Group has been determined based on collections from measured sections. Although rare, W. crosbyi is part of an assemblage of micromolluscs including Bemella sp., Parailsanella sp. cf. murenica and a sinistral form of Aldanella (A. sp. cf. A. golubevi). Other fauna present include Australohalkieria sp., Eremactis mawsoni, chancelloriids and Cupitheca sp.
Kline argues that it is crucial to isolate the respective roles of teaching and learning in order to understand how pedagogy has evolved. We argue that doing so requires testing species that learn from pedagogy but that rarely teach themselves. Here, we review how one previously neglected species – domesticated dogs (Canis familiaris) – may allow researchers to do just that.

On a morning in 1960, Jane Goodall made an observation that would forever change the way scientists think of our own species’ place in the animal kingdom: she observed a non-human animal fashioning and using a tool. There, for the first time, Goodall witnessed the famous Gombe chimpanzee David Greybeard fishing for termites. She watched as, over and over, he grabbed a twig, stripped off its leaves, placed it inside a termite mound, and then retracted it to lick off a pile of termites. Even on that morning, Goodall recognized the significance of her observation (Goodall, 1986). At the time, scientists had assumed that humans were the only species capable of a cognitive feat like Greybeard’s termite fishing. Indeed, sophisticated tool use had long been heralded as one of the key differences between humans and other animals. With a single observation, Goodall had challenged this understanding of non-human cognition. She excitedly detailed her findings in a telegram to her mentor, the anthropologist Louis Leakey, who replied with his now famous rejoinder: “Now we must redefine ‘man,’ redefine ‘tool,’ or accept chimpanzees as humans.”
In the five decades that have followed Goodall’s original observation, scientists are still struggling with the particulars of Leakey’s interpretational challenge. On the one hand, researchers have learned much more about the impressive nature of non-human tool use, thereby redefining what it means to be a tool-using creature. We now know, of course, that humans and chimpanzees are not alone in their use and design of tools. Since Goodall’s original observations, scientists have documented cases of tool use in nearly every taxa of the animal kingdom (see reviews in Beck, 1980; Hauser, 2000). We’ve observed capuchins using hammers (Ottoni & Izar, 2008; Chapter 10), orangutans using spears (van Schaik et al., 2003), cephalopods using costumes (Finn et al., 2009) and crows making fishing hooks (Weir et al., 2002; see also Chapter 5). Indeed, non-human tool use is now known to be both varied – involving a variety of different kinds and combinations of tools – and flexible – with many species employing tools to solve an array of different kinds of problems.
Growing evidence supports the involvement of EF in academic performance and, consequently, EdF in learning disorders (commonly known as learning disabilities or LD). Often, the first indicator of LD is low academic achievement in areas of reading, math, or writing. The terminology used to describe different LD conditions varies by field and includes dyslexia and reading disorder/disability, dyscalculia and mathematics disorder/disability, and disorder of written expression/writing disability. Comorbidity among these learning disorders is common, as is the co-occurrence of LD with ADHD.
Recent US data indicate that almost 2.5 million public school students received special education and related services for LD in 2008, and 43% of all public school students receiving special education and related services were identified as having a specific learning disability. Federal guidelines used in educational settings indicate that a child may have a specific LD if, in the absence of any other disability or limiting condition and despite appropriate instruction and experiences, the child does not adequately achieve for age or state standards in one of the following eight academic areas: oral expression, listening comprehension, written expression, basic reading skills, reading fluency skills, reading comprehension, mathematics calculation, or mathematics problem solving. The DSM-IV-TR indicates diagnosis of specific disorders of reading, math, and written expression based on lower than expected performance on standardized tests “given the person’s chronological age, measured intelligence, and age-appropriate education.” The proposed changes for DSM-5 include defining these disorders based on low performance on standardized measures without requiring a significant discrepancy between measured intelligence and achievement.
This is a collection of new papers by leading researchers on natural language parsing. In the past, the problem of how people parse the sentences they hear - determine the identity of the words in these sentences and group these words into larger units - has been addressed in very different ways by experimental psychologists, by theoretical linguists, and by researchers in artificial intelligence, with little apparent relationship among the solutions proposed by each group. However, because of important advances in all these disciplines, research on parsing in each of these fields now seems to have something significant to contribute to the others, as this volume demonstrates. The volume includes some papers applying the results of experimental psychological studies of parsing to linguistic theory, others which present computational models of parsing, and a mathematical linguistics paper on tree-adjoining grammars and parsing.
Female fertility begins to decline many years before menopause, despite continued regular ovulatory cycles. Decreased fecundity with increasing female age has long been recognized in demographic and epidemiological studies. Traditionally, the evaluation of the infertile female consists of: (i) ovulation assessment (ovulatory factors), (ii) evaluation of the uterine morphology (ovulation assessment) and tubal patency (tubal factors), (iii) assessment of the presence of pelvic pathology (by laparoscopy) (peritoneal factors), and (iv) postcoital test (cervical factors). Hysterosalpingography (HSG), laparoscopy are widely used in assessing infertility. Chlamydia antibody testing is a screening method for assessing tubal infertility. HSG, sonohysterography, hystero-salpingo contrast sonography (HyCoSy), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and hysteroscopy are used in assessment of uterine factors related to infertility. Currently, the best method to monitor ovulation is transvaginal ultrasound, which can be used to demonstrate the growth of a dominant follicle and provide presumptive evidence of ovulation and leutinization.
