Four pollen sequences along a transect from north-central Iowa to southeast Wisconsin reveal the distribution of prairie and forest during the Holocene and test the use of pollen isopolls in locating the Holocene prairie-forest border. Prairie was dominant in central Iowa and climate was drier than present from about 8000 to 3000 yr B.P. During the driest part of this period in central Iowa (6500-5500 yr B.P.), mesic forest prevailed in eastern Iowa and Wisconsin, suggesting conditions wetter than at present. Prairie replaced the mesic forest about 5400 yr B.P. in eastern Iowa but did not extend much farther east; mesic forests were replaced in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois about 5400 yr B.P. by xeric oak forests. This change from mesic to xeric conditions at 5400 yr B.P. was widespread and suggests that the intrusion of drier Pacific air was blocked by maritime tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico until the late Holocene in this area.
Keynes abandoned the theoretical approach used in the Treatise on Money, the fundamental equations approach, very soon after publishing the Treatise. One reason why he may have done so is discussed in this paper. Twice in 1931 someone pointed out to Keynes a third fundamental equation, one for the price of investment goods, an equation Keynes had not developed in the Treatise. This third fundamental equation may have shown Keynes that his fundamental equation approach may not be promising or fruitful.
Injury to the brain and spinal cord is one of the most catastrophic and costly occurrences in the Ontario health system. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of past Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation (ONF) studentships and fellowships in terms of capacity building in the neurotrauma field in Ontario.
Method:
An online, cross sectional survey amongst past recipients of studentships and fellowships that terminated prior to July 2005. Explicit data were collected on various aspects of career development including current activity, awards and publications.
Results:
Thirty-six out of 42 (86%) eligible past trainees responded; 12 (33%) were Masters students, 12 (33%) were PhD students and 12 (33%) were Post-Doctoral students. A majority of the recipients (61%) are currently involved in neurotrauma-related activities (clinical, research and teaching) in more than 20% of their time, with no substantial differences between the degree groups. Half the recipients are currently involved in neurotrauma-related research in more than 20% of their time. The awardees published 1.5 peer-review manuscripts/person-year and received multiple awards. A high majority of our recipients (86%) feel that the ONF award had a substantial impact on their career.
Conclusions:
A high proportion of past award recipients remain involved in neurotrauma activities, especially in research. These results may lead to a cautious conclusion of the positive impact of the ONF studentships and fellowships on neurotrauma capacity building. These results should be considered in strategic planning of funding agencies similar to ONF.
The onset of progressive cerebellar ataxia in early childhood is considered a key feature of ataxiatelangiectasia (A-T), accompanied by ocular apraxia, telangiectasias, immunodeficiency, cancer susceptibility and hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation.
Methods:
We describe the clinical features and course of three Mennonite children who were diagnosed with A-T following the completion of therapy for lymphoid malignancies.
Results:
Prior to cancer therapy, all had non-progressive atypical neurological abnormalities, with onset by age 30 months, including dysarthria, dyskinesia, hypotonia and/or dystonia, without telangiectasias. Cerebellar ataxia was noted in only one of the children and was mild until his death at age eight years. None had severe infections. All three children were “cured” of their lymphoid malignancies, but experienced severe adverse effects from the treatments administered. The two children who received cranial irradiation developed supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the brain, an association not previously described, with fatal outcomes.
Conclusions:
The range of neurological presentations of A-T is broad. Ataxia and telangiectasias may be minimal or absent and the course seemingly non-progressive. The diagnosis of A-T should be considered in all children with neuromotor dysfunction or peripheral neuropathy, particularly those who develop lymphoid malignancies. The consequences of missing the diagnosis may be dire. Radiation therapy and radiomimetic drugs should be avoided in individuals with A-T.
Based on archival evidence, this paper demonstrates that Keynes did not borrow the concept of the marginal efficiency of capital from Fisher, but, rather, developed it himself.
As healthcare personnel (HCP) influenza vaccination becomes a quality indicator for healthcare facilities, effective inter¬ventions are needed. This study was designed to test a factorial design to improve HCP vaccination rates.
Design.
A before-after trial with education, publicity, and free and easily accessible influenza vaccines used a factorial design to determine the effect of mobile vaccination carts and incentives on vaccination rates of HCP, who were divided into groups on the basis of their level of patient contact (ie, business and/or administrative role, indirect patient contact, and direct patient contact).
Setting.
Eleven acute care facilities in a large health system.
Participants.
More than 26,000 nonphysician employees.
Results.
Influenza vaccination rates increased significantly in most facilities and increased system-wide from 32.4% to 39.6% (P < .001). In the baseline year, business unit employee vaccination rates were significantly higher than among HCP with patient contact; rates did not differ significantly across groups in the intervention year. In logistic regression that accounted for demographic characteristics, intervention year, and other factors, the use of incentives and/or mobile carts that provided access to vaccine at the work unit significantly increased the likelihood of vaccination among HCP with direct and indirect patient contact, compared with control sites.
Conclusions.
Interventions to improve vaccination rates are differentially effective among HCP with varying levels of patient contact. Mobile carts appear to remove access barriers, whereas incentives may motivate HCP to be vaccinated. Education and publicity may be sufficient for workers in business or administrative positions. Interventions tailored by worker type are likely to be most successful for improving HCP vaccination rates.
We have studied the low-temperature growth of GaNAs layers on sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. We have succeeded in achieving GaN1-xAsx alloys over a large composition range by growing the films at temperature much below the normal GaN growth temperatures with increasing the As2 flux as well as Ga:N flux ratio. We found that the alloys with high As content x>0.1 are amorphous. Optical absorption measurements reveal a continuous gradual decrease of band gap from ˜3.4 eV to ˜1.4 eV with increasing As content. The energy gap reaches its minimum of ˜1.4 eV at the x˜0.6-0.7. For amorphous GaAsN alloys with x<0.3 the composition dependence of the band gap follows the prediction of the band anticrossing model developed for dilute alloys. This suggests that the amorphous GaN1-xAsx alloys have short-range ordering that resembles random crystalline GaN1-xAsx alloys. Such amorphous GaN1-xAsx alloys with tunable electronic structure may be useful as photoanodes in photo-electrochemical cells for hydrogen production.
We characterize convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface in terms of uniform convergence actions on the zero locus of the limit set. We also construct subgroups that act as uniform convergence groups on their limit sets, but are not convex cocompact.
