The hexagonal mesoporous silica MCM-41 nanospheres with Au nanorods (AuNRs) as core have been synthesized via a modified Stöber method by a process of hydration and condensation of tetraethoxysilane in a water–ethanol mixture. The AuNR@MCM-41 nanocomposites combine the photothermal characteristic with the mesopore of MCM-41 in one body. We utilized these core–shell materials for ibuprofen encapsulation and release in the simulated body fluid (pH 7.4) for the first time. The results certificated AuNR@MCM-41 nanocomposites as novel dual-functional materials could realize the light-driven release of drug due to the photothermal effect of the AuNRs. Such novel nanomaterials offer a new way for cancer treatment which combine hyperthermia with the chemotherapeutic drugs by synergistic effect.

Various compositions of Li1-2xCaxSi2N3 (x = 0–0.2) were synthesized by the reaction of Li3N, Si3N4, and Ca3N2 at temperatures of 1873–2073 K. Ca was incorporated into the LiSi2N3 host lattice to form a solid solution of Li1-2xCaxSi2N3. The activation energy for ionic conduction was decreased and ionic conductivity at room temperature was enhanced by Ca doping. At 298 K, the ionic conductivity of densified Li1-2xCaxSi2N3 (x = 0.075) ceramic reached 1.6 × 10−5 S m−1, almost four orders of magnitude higher than that of densified Li1-2xCaxSi2N3 (x = 0) ceramic (3.1 × 10−9 S m−1). The change in the LiSi2N3 framework upon Ca doping decreased the interaction between the ions and increased the number of defects in the structure, making it easier for mobile Li+ ions to migrate. Moreover, the incorporation of aliovalent substitutional Ca2+ ions in the LiSi2N3 lattice is expected to create Li+ vacancies (VLi) for charge compensation (Li1-2xCaxVLiSi2N3), thereby increasing the number of mobile Li+ ions.

The development of novel organic polymer thin films is essential for the advancement of many emerging fields including organic electronics and biomedical coatings. In this study, the effect of synthesis conditions, namely radio frequency (rf) deposition power, on the material properties of polyterpenol thin films derived from nonsynthetic environmentally friendly monomer was investigated. At lower deposition powers, the polyterpenol films preserved more of the original monomer constituents, such as hydroxy functional groups; however, they were also softer and more hydrophilic compared to polymers fabricated at higher power. Enhanced monomer fragmentation and consequent reduction in the presence of the polar groups in the structure of the high-power samples reduced their optical band gap value from 2.95 eV for 10 W to 2.64 eV for 100 W. Regardless of deposition power, all samples were found to be optically transparent with smooth, defect-free, and homogenous surfaces.

During the mechanical alloying of a prealloyed Fe–Mo and Mn powder, a large amount of energy is involved because of continuous collisions between the grinding media and the powder. The energy is transformed into massive plastic deformation and solid solution formation. Both phenomena increase in the hardness of the milled particles. To quantify the contribution of both effects to the hardening, nanoindentation experiments were performed on the as-milled powder and after an annealing treatment, based on the assumption that the thermal process would eliminate the lattice distortions due to plastic deformation. When the indentation profile was measured, a significant pileup around the perimeter of the indentation track was observed; therefore, it was necessary to measure the actual amount of contact area by atomic force microscopy. Thus, parameters of mechanical powders can be determined, giving to the conclusion that 40% of the hardening induced can be attributed to the plastic strain.

In this work, we compare the synthesis of germanium nanowires (GeNWs) using a highly localized heat source with GeNWs synthesized in a uniform temperature environment. With the exception of thermal environment, identical synthesis parameters were maintained in all experiments. The localized heat source, a suspended silicon microscale heater, enabled site-specific synthesis and thus the direct integration of GeNWs which is presented for the first time. The effect of heat source implementation and local temperature gradients on the resulting nanowires is assessed in terms of resulting nanowire geometry, growth rate, and quality. Overall, we note a reduction in growth rate and elevated kinking levels in locally synthesized nanowires when compared to nanowires synthesized in uniform temperature processes. The taper which typically characterizes GeNWs, however, is significantly reduced. Finally, we explore branching behavior which hints of instabilities in the synthesis process as nanowires grow away from the heat source.

Indium has attracted much attention as a beneficial addition to cobalt–antimony-based skutterudites as a result of good thermoelectric performance. In this study, as-cast InxCo4Sb12 with x = 0.05, 0.2 were examined using x-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. For x = 0.2 we found, besides the skutterudite main phase, nanometer-sized regions of secondary phases distributed along the grain boundaries, which exhibit substructures. As-cast material with x = 0.05 does not show visible precipitates. We further observed that changing one of the heat treatment parameters of In0.2Co4Sb12 has a major effect on the microstructure and shape of the precipitates, but minor influence on the skutterudite matrix composition. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis by transmission electron microscopy) reveals that indium is to a large extent distributed into the skutterudite structure. Measurements of short-term sintered material confirm that the addition of indium and particularly the modification of the synthesis parameter entails to an enhanced ZT.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VdF-HFP)] as polymer host, doped with lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiTf) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (BMIMTf) have been synthesized via solution casting method. This P(VdF-HFP)/LiTf/BMIMTf-based SPE achieves ∼2.4 × 10−3 and ∼1.1 × 10−2 S·cm−1 at 30 and 80 °C, respectively, with 100 part by weight of BMIMTf incorporated into the system. A very interesting trend of temperature-dependence ionic conductivity has been obtained. A rationalization of the trend is given and the morphological changes observed in scanning electron micrographs seem to be commensurate with it. Thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric analyses reveal some changes in thermal properties of the SPEs, including the possibility of phase separation happening in the sample.

We investigated microstructures, compositional distributions, and electrical properties of dielectric CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) thin films deposited on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates from 700 to 800 °C by pulsed laser deposition. With increasing the deposition temperature from 700 to 750 °C, the dielectric constants (εr) of CCTO films were greatly enhanced from ∼300 to ∼2000 at 10 kHz, respectively. However, the εr values of CCTO films were gradually decreased above 750 °C, which was surely attributable to the formation of a TiO2-rich dead layer at the interface between CCTO and Pt electrode. Compositional analyses by Auger electron spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy revealed that the TiO2-rich dead layer became thicker because of severe Cu diffusion from CCTO films to Pt electrode. The leakage current behaviors of CCTO films are in good agreement with Poole–Frenkel conduction mechanism, where both the TiO2-rich dead layer and rutile TiO2 nanocrystalline particles are considered to play a role of charge trapping centers.

Tin oxide (SnO2) nanotubes have been synthesized using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as removable templates. The entire synthesis takes place on the microscale on a micromachined hotplate, without the use of photolithography, taking advantage of the device’s built-in heater. Well-aligned multiwalled CNT forests were grown directly on microhotplates at 600 °C using a bimetallic iron/alumina composite catalyst and acetylene as precursor. Thin films of anhydrous SnO2 were then deposited onto the CNT forests through chemical vapor deposition of tin nitrate at 375 °C. The CNTs were then removed through a simple anneal process in air at temperatures above 450 °C, resulting in SnO2 nanotubes. Gas sensing measurements indicated a substantial improvement in sensitivity to trace concentrations of methanol from the SnO2 nanotubes in comparison with a SnO2 thin film. The synthesis technique is generic and may be used to create any metal oxide nanotube structure directly on microscale substrates.

In this work, two- and three-parameter Weibull statistics were used for analyzing the variability of fracture strength for Zr55Ti2Co28Al15 bulk metallic glass (BMG), both in compression and in tension testing. In contrast to the compression in which the specimens fail via the massive shear-off, however, failure mode in tension for the as-cast BMG is flaw-controlled crack opening (mode I or mixed mode) due to the presence of cast defects such as porosity. As a result, dispersion of compressive fracture strength is rather uniform. For the BMG rods of 6 mm in diameter, the three-parameter Weibull modulus m3p and threshold stress σμ (below which no failure occurs) are 3.4 and 1780 MPa, respectively. However, tensile fracture strength of the BMGs manifests a large variability, in a range of 310–1690 MPa. In terms of fracture surface morphology, the specimen failure at different stress is associated with two types of defects: large pores on/near the surface of specimens and small internal pores. Using bimodal and three-parameter Weibull analysis, the Weibull modulus m1 and threshold σμ1 at lower strength level are 1.8 and 250 MPa, respectively, suggesting a modest reliability. One should exercise caution, therefore, in interpreting the reliability of as-cast BMG materials only simply in terms of the compression tests, small-sized samples, and tow-parameter Weibull analysis. Like the conventional metal castings, controlling the processing conditions to minimize the cast defects is critical issue to ensure the reliability of BMG materials.

As deposited amorphous and crystallized thin films of Ti 37.5% Si alloy deposited by pulsed laser ablation technique were irradiated with 100 keV Xe+ ion beam to an ion fluence of about 1016 ions-cm−2. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the implanted Xe formed amorphous nanosized clusters in both cases. The Xe ion-irradiation favors nucleation of a fcc-Ti(Si) phase in amorphous films. However, in crystalline films, irradiation leads to dissolution of the Ti5Si3 intermetallic phase. In both cases, Xe irradiation leads to the evolution of similar microstructures. Our results point to the pivotal role of nucleation in the evolution of the microstructure under the condition of ion implantation.

An n-body Cu–Zr–Ti potential is constructed and applied to evaluate a glass-forming composition range (GFR) of the Cu–Zr–Ti ternary system by molecular dynamics simulations using a solid-solution model, which is formed via random substitution of solvent atoms by a certain number of solute atoms. It is found that the GFR of the Cu–Zr–Ti ternary system is located within an approximate distorted quadrilateral composition region, in which the solid solutions are unstable and spontaneously collapse to form amorphous phases. The compositions of the four vertexes of the distorted quadrilateral are determined to be Cu22Zr78Ti0, Cu24Zr0Ti76, Cu56Zr0Ti44, and Cu72Zr28Ti0, respectively. In addition, the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental observations and compatible with some empirical rules.

Iron oxides, including maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4), have been widely applied in many fields. For technological advances in the future, further improvements of their ferromagnetic properties are desirable. The development of iron ferrites with a large coercive field (Hc) is one of issues of consequence. For ferrites, however, enlarging the Hc value is not easy because of their low magnetocrystalling anisotropy constant. Here we report single-crystalline Cu-doped γ-Fe2O3 nanowires in which the controlled diameter (70–100 nm) and the graded Cu dopant (7, 10, and 15%) are directly obtained by a simple chemical vapor deposition technique. In particular, the coercive value (over 2 T) of 10% Cu-doped γ-Fe2O3 nanowires is much higher than that (<80 Oe) of undoped γ-Fe2O3 nanowires at room temperature. On the basis of the experimental magnetization data, the achievement of such a higher coercive field of Cu-doped γ-Fe2O3 (10%) nanowires is tentatively suggested.

Bamboo is a typical natural fiber-reinforced composite material with superior mechanical properties. As the reinforce phase in bamboo composite, the vascular bundles were extracted from different height locations of a Moso bamboo with an alkali treatment method, and the mechanical properties were investigated via the tensile test. It is found that both the longitudinal Young’s modulus and strength of the vascular bundles are linearly increased from the inner to outer side. To study the variation of mechanical properties of bamboo culm along the radial direction, thin bamboo slices were also tested. Using a modified rule of mixtures, the longitudinal Young’s modulus of bamboo slices are analyzed and excellent agreement can be found between experimental and theoretical results, which indicates that the longitudinal Young’s modulus of bamboo culm is cubically increased in the radial direction.

In this study, compact Charpy impact testing was used to investigate the effect of processing history and dendrite morphology of bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMCs) on impact toughness. Composite samples were fabricated via suction casting and semisolid forging, and the results were compared with crystalline alloys in the same geometry. A strong dependence on processing was observed, with samples exhibiting up to a 30-fold increase in impact toughness depending on processing and microstructure. Provided that attention is paid to processing techniques, BMGMCs are shown to have properties that equal or surpass some conventionally used crystalline alloys. These properties invite further exploration of these materials in structural applications.

We have developed a new class of proton-conducting organic–inorganic hybrid silicophosphite membranes, produced by ethanol condensation of organically modified alkoxysilanes and anhydrous vinylphosphonic acid under solventless, catalyst-free, low-temperature, one-pot conditions. The membranes synthesized in this study are crack-free, large, and flexible, and they exhibit good thermal stability up to intermediate temperatures (~218 °C). Structural analyses using 29Si and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and infrared measurements revealed that ethanol condensation produced an inorganic alternating copolymer structure, Si–O–P, with a phosphole group, and successive polymerization between vinyl and/or methacryl groups enabled these structures to connect with each other. In this way, it is possible to achieve structure manufacturing of inorganic–organic networks. The proton conductivities of the hybrids are as high as 5.2 × 10−3 S/cm at 85 °C under 80% relative humidity.

Cu6Sn5 is a common intermetallic compound formed during electrical packaging. It has an allotropic transformation from the low-temperature monoclinic η’-Cu6Sn5 to high-temperature hexagonal η-Cu6Sn5 at equilibrium temperature 186 °C. In this research, the effects of this allotropic transformation and Ni addition on the thermal expansion of η’- and/or η-Cu6Sn5 were characterized using synchrotron x-ray diffraction and dilatometry. A volume expansion during the monoclinic to hexagonal transformation was found. The addition of Ni was found to decrease the undesirable thermal expansion by stabilizing the hexagonal Cu6Sn5 at temperatures below 186 °C and reducing the overall thermal expansion of Cu6Sn5.

This article lays the foundation for the development of microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition process conditions for synthesizing multilayered microcrystalline and nanocrystalline diamond (MCD and NCD) thin films. The effects of gas composition and the diamond seeding medium are correlated with the film morphology and diamond phase purity. Results of process optimization experiments using single-layer diamond deposition indicate that for high gas-phase Ar content (≥90%) the film quality improves with reduced Ar content and with increasing thickness reaching a plateau above a thickness of ∼2 μm. Multilayer diamond deposition experiments with two different seeding media (25 nm and 1 μm) clearly show that it is feasible to selectively synthesize alternating MCD (60% Ar) and NCD (95% Ar) layers with good control of film quality and morphology, thereby setting the stage for development of multilayered diamond thin films with tailored properties for thermal management applications.

KMgF3:Eu nanocubes with a mean edge length of ∼12 nm were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Result of x-ray diffraction reveals that the nanocubes are perovskite phase. Under ultraviolet excitation, the broad emission bands from trace oxygen and color centers in KMgF3 matrix were observed. In comparison with a bulk sample having the same chemical compositions, no characteristic emissions of Eu2+ were observed, which can be attributed to the overlappment of the emissions of Eu2+ and color centers in KMgF3:Eu nanocubes. In addition, the emissions of Eu3+ were also detected, and the intensity ratio of 5D0 → 7F2 to 5D0 → 7F1 changed with excitation wavelength, indicating that the material has multiple luminescence centers or emitting states.

Ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) was uniformly modified on TiO2 porous thin film by impregnation of Ru-contained dye on the film followed by sintering it at 450 °C to burn off organic matters and form ruthenium oxide, which is named as impregnation method. The homogenous modification of metal oxide inside porous thin film can be realized by the impregnation method, and the modification amount of RuO2 can be easily adjusted by the iteration numbers of impregnation and sintering. Appropriate amount of uniformly modified RuO2 was found to obviously enhance photocatalytic performance of TiO2 to degrade eosin Y. The photocatalysis enhancement was attributed to the shallow hole traps on the surface of nanoparticles formed by RuO2, and these traps can retard recombination of hole with electron.
