We study the equation a2−2b6=cp and its specialization a2−2=cp, where p is a prime, using the modular method. In particular, we use a ℚ-curve defined over for which the solution (a,b,c)=(±1,±1,−1) gives rise to a CM-form. This allows us to apply the modular method to resolve the equation a2−2b6=cp for p in certain congruence classes. For the specialization a2−2=cp, we use the multi-Frey technique of Siksek to obtain further refined results.

Let k be a field of characteristic other than 2. There can be an obstruction to a principally polarized abelian threefold (A,a) over k, which is a Jacobian over , being a Jacobian over k; this can be computed in terms of the rationality of the square root of the value of a certain Siegel modular form. We show how to do this explicitly for principally polarized abelian threefolds which are the third power of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication. We use our numerical results to prove or refute the existence of some optimal curves of genus 3.

We compute the conjugacy classes of elements and the character tables of the maximal parabolic subgroups of the simple Ree groups 2F4(q2). For one of the maximal parabolic subgroups, we find an irreducible character of the unipotent radical that does not extend to its inertia subgroup.

Let β∈(1,2) be a Pisot number and let Hβ denote Garsia’s entropy for the Bernoulli convolution associated with β. Garsia, in 1963, showed that Hβ<1 for any Pisot β. For the Pisot numbers which satisfy xm=xm−1+xm−2+⋯+x+1 (with m≥2), Garsia’s entropy has been evaluated with high precision by Alexander and Zagier for m=2 and later by Grabner, Kirschenhofer and Tichy for m≥3, and it proves to be close to 1. No other numerical values for Hβ are known. In the present paper we show that Hβ>0.81 for all Pisot β, and improve this lower bound for certain ranges of β. Our method is computational in nature.

As a contribution to an eventual solution of the problem of the determination of the maximal subgroups of the Monster we prove that the Monster does not contain any subgroup isomorphic to $\mathrm{PSL}_2(27)$ .

We describe algorithms that allow the computation of fundamental domains in the Bruhat–Tits tree for the action of discrete groups arising from quaternion algebras. These algorithms are used to compute spaces of rigid modular forms of arbitrary even weight, and we explain how to evaluate such forms to high precision using overconvergent methods. Finally, these algorithms are applied to the calculation of conjectural equations for the canonical embedding of p-adically uniformizable rational Shimura curves. We conclude with an example in the case of a genus 4 Shimura curve.

In this paper, the authors determine the suborbits of Conways largest simple group in its conjugation action on each of its three conjugacy classes of involutions. Matrix representatives of these suborbits are also provided in an accompanying computer file.

In the study of the rational cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth surface, it is particularly interesting to understand the characteristic classes of the tautological bundles and the tangent bundle. In this note we pursue this study. We first collect all results appearing separately in the literature and prove some new formulas using Ohmoto's results on orbifold Chern classes on Hilbert schemes. We also explain the algorithmic counterpart of the topic: the cohomology space is governed by a vertex algebra that can be used to compute characteristic classes. We present an implementation of the vertex operators in the rewriting logic system MAUDE, and address observations and conjectures obtained after symbolic computations.

Brauer classes of a global field can be represented by cyclic algebras. Effective constructions of such algebras and a maximal order therein are given for $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ , excluding cases of wild ramification. As part of the construction, we also obtain a new description of subfields of cyclotomic function fields.

We prove the assertion in the title by conducting an exhaustive computational search for subgroups isomorphic to $\text{PSL}_{2}(13)$ and containing elements in class $13B$ .

If C is a curve of genus 2 defined over a field k and J is its Jacobian, then we can associate a hypersurface K in ℙ3 to J, called the Kummer surface of J. Flynn has made this construction explicit in the case when the characteristic of k is not 2 and C is given by a simplified equation. He has also given explicit versions of several maps defined on the Kummer surface and shown how to perform arithmetic on J using these maps. In this paper we generalize these results to the case of arbitrary characteristic.

We address the problem of evaluating an $L$ -function when only a small number of its Dirichlet coefficients are known. We use the approximate functional equation in a new way and find that it is possible to evaluate the $L$ -function more precisely than one would expect from the standard approach. The method, however, requires considerably more computational effort to achieve a given accuracy than would be needed if more Dirichlet coefficients were available.

We determine the conditions under which singular values of multiple $\eta $ -quotients of square-free level, not necessarily prime to six, yield class invariants; that is, algebraic numbers in ring class fields of imaginary-quadratic number fields. We show that the singular values lie in subfields of the ring class fields of index ${2}^{{k}^{\prime } - 1} $ when ${k}^{\prime } \geq 2$ primes dividing the level are ramified in the imaginary-quadratic field, which leads to faster computations of elliptic curves with prescribed complex multiplication. The result is generalised to singular values of modular functions on ${ X}_{0}^{+ } (p)$ for $p$ prime and ramified.

We propose an algorithm to verify the $p$ -part of the class number for a number field $K$ , provided $K$ is totally real and an abelian extension of the rational field $\mathbb{Q}$ , and $p$ is any prime. On fields of degree 4 or higher, this algorithm has been shown heuristically to be faster than classical algorithms that compute the entire class number, with improvement increasing with larger field degrees.

We calculate all decomposition matrices of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of the rank two exceptional complex reflection groups in characteristic zero. We prove the existence of canonical basic sets in the sense of Geck–Rouquier and show that all modular irreducible representations can be lifted to the ordinary ones.

We compute the complete set of candidates for the zeta function of a K $3$ surface over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ consistent with the Weil and Tate conjectures, as well as the complete set of zeta functions of smooth quartic surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ . These sets differ substantially, but we do identify natural subsets which coincide. This gives some numerical evidence towards a Honda–Tate theorem for transcendental zeta functions of K $3$ surfaces; such a result would refine a recent theorem of Taelman, in which one must allow an uncontrolled base field extension.

We present an efficient algorithm for the condensation of homomorphism spaces. This provides an improvement over the known tensor condensation method which is essentially due to a better choice of bases. We explain the theory behind this approach and describe the implementation in detail. Finally, we give timings to compare with previous methods.

We exhibit a practical algorithm for solving the constructive membership problem for discrete free subgroups of rank $2$ in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ . This algorithm, together with methods for checking whether a two-generator subgroup of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ or $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is discrete and free, have been implemented in Magma for groups defined over real algebraic number fields.

This paper presents a new probabilistic algorithm to compute modular polynomials modulo a prime. Modular polynomials parameterize pairs of isogenous elliptic curves, and are useful in many aspects of computational number theory and cryptography. The algorithm presented here has the distinguishing feature that it does not involve the computation of Fourier coefficients of modular forms. The need to compute the exponentially large integral coefficients is avoided by working directly modulo a prime, and computing isogenies between elliptic curves via Vélu's formulas.
