The Erdős–Simonovits stability theorem is one of the most widely used theorems in extremal graph theory. We obtain an Erdős–Simonovits type stability theorem in multi-partite graphs. Different from the Erdős–Simonovits stability theorem, our stability theorem in multi-partite graphs says that if the number of edges of an $H$-free graph $G$ is close to the extremal graphs for $H$, then $G$ has a well-defined structure but may be far away from the extremal graphs for $H$. As applications, we strengthen a theorem of Bollobás, Erdős, and Straus and solve a conjecture in a stronger form posed by Han and Zhao concerning the maximum number of edges in multi-partite graphs which does not contain vertex-disjoint copies of a clique.
This study aims to explore the feasibility and accuracy of utilizing large language models (LLMs) to assess the risk of bias (ROB) in cohort studies. We conducted a pilot and feasibility study in 30 cohort studies randomly selected from reference lists of published Cochrane reviews. We developed a structured prompt to guide the ChatGPT-4o, Moonshot-v1-128k, and DeepSeek-V3 to assess the ROB of each cohort twice. We used the ROB results assessed by three evidence-based medicine experts as the gold standard, and then we evaluated the accuracy of LLMs by calculating the correct assessment rate, sensitivity, specificity, and F1 scores for overall and item-specific levels. The consistency of the overall and item-specific assessment results was evaluated using Cohen’s kappa (κ) and prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted kappa. Efficiency was estimated by the mean assessment time required. This study assessed three LLMs (ChatGPT-4o, Moonshot-v1-128k, and DeepSeek-V3) and revealed distinct performance across eight assessment items. Overall accuracy was comparable (80.8%–83.3%). Moonshot-v1-128k showed superior sensitivity in population selection (0.92 versus ChatGPT-4o’s 0.55, P < 0.001). In terms of F1 scores, Moonshot-v1-128k led in population selection (F = 0.80 versus ChatGPT-4o’s 0.67, P = 0.004). ChatGPT-4o demonstrated the highest consistency (mean κ = 96.5%), with perfect agreement (100%) in outcome confidence. ChatGPT-4o was 97.3% faster per article (32.8 seconds versus 20 minutes manually) and outperformed Moonshot-v1-128k and DeepSeek-V3 by 47–50% in processing speed. The efficient and accurate assessment of ROB in cohort studies by ChatGPT-4o, Moonshot-v1-128k, and DeepSeek-V3 highlights the potential of LLMs to enhance the systematic review process.
Investigating risk factors for mpox’s infectious period is vital for preventing this emerging disease, yet evidence remains scarce. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with the duration of mpox infectiousness among mpox cases in Vietnam. The primary outcome was the duration of the mpox infectiousness, defined between symptom onset and the first negative test result for the mpox virus. Fine and Gray’s regression models were employed to assess the associations between the infectious period and several risk factors while accounting for competing risks of death by mpox. Most mpox cases recovered within 30 days. Patients with HIV or treated at multiple facilities for mpox had lower incidence rates of cleared infection compared to those who were HIV-negative or treated at a single facility. In regression models, patients with mpox symptoms of rash or mucosal lesions (sub-distribution hazard ratios = 0.62, 95% confidence interval = 0.46–0.83), ulcers (0.57, 0.41–0.80), or fever (0.62, 0.46–0.83) had significantly prolonged infectious periods than those without such symptoms. Our findings provided insights for managing mpox cases, especially those vulnerable to prolonged infectious periods in settings with sporadic cases reported.
American silk moth, Antheraea polyphemus Cramer 1775 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), native to North America, has potential significance in sericulture for food consumption and silk production. To date, the phylogenetic relationship and divergence time of A. polyphemus with its Asian relatives remain unknown. To end these issues, two mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of A. polyphemus from the USA and Canada respectively were determined. The mitogenomes of A. polyphemus from the USA and Canada were 15,346 and 15,345 bp in size, respectively, with only two transitions and five indels. The two mitogenomes both encoded typical mitochondrial 37 genes. No tandem repeat elements were identified in the A+T-rich region of A. polyphemus. The mitogenome-based phylogenetic analyses supported the placement of A. polyphemus within the genus Antheraea, and revealed the presence of two clades for eight Antheraea species used: one included A. polyphemus, A. assamensis Helfer, A. formosana Sonan and the other contained A. mylitta Drury, A. frithi Bouvier, A. yamamai Guérin-Méneville, A. proylei Jolly, and A. pernyi Guérin-Méneville. Mitogenome-based divergence time estimation further suggested that the dispersal of A. polyphemus from Asia into North America might have occurred during the Miocene Epoch (18.18 million years ago) across the Berling land bridge. This study reports the mitogenome of A. polyphemus that provides new insights into the phylogenetic relationship among Antheraea species and the origin of A. polyphemus.
Previous studies have found substantial costs to be associated with depression and insomnia (as separate entities).
Aims
To estimate healthcare service use and costs associated with insomnia in Australian adults experiencing subthreshold depression or major depressive disorder (MDD).
Method
Healthcare service use and productivity loss were extracted from the cross-sectional 2020–2022 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing data. Insomnia and depression were assessed using questions aligned with DSM-IV criteria. Weighted two-part models were used to calculate average annual costs (presented as 2021–2022 Australian dollars).
Results
The analytical sample meeting subthreshold depression or MDD criteria consisted of 1331 adults (aged 40.5 ± 16.1 years; 59% female; insomnia prevalence: 84%). Healthcare service use and healthcare costs between individuals with insomnia and those without insomnia were similar in the MDD group. For subthreshold depression, healthcare costs were significantly higher for those with insomnia compared with those without insomnia (Δ = A$990, 95% CI: 234 to 1747), but healthcare resource use was not significantly different. Productivity loss among employed people and reduced employment were much greater (although the difference did not reach statistical significance) in adults with insomnia compared with those without insomnia.
Conclusions
Healthcare resource use among adults with depression was similar in those with and without insomnia. However, higher healthcare costs associated with insomnia were observed in adults with subthreshold depression. Further studies are encouraged to understand the nature of the increased healthcare cost associated with insomnia in individuals with subthreshold depression and to optimise healthcare service use in people with comorbid depression and insomnia.
There are few economic evaluations of adjunctive psychosocial therapies for bipolar disorder.
Aims
Estimate the cost–utility of in-person psychosocial therapies for adults with bipolar disorder added to treatment as usual (TAU), from an Australian Government perspective.
Method
We developed an economic model, estimating costs in 2021 Australian dollars (A$) and outcomes using quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) gained and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) averted. The model compared psychoeducation, brief psychoeducation, carer psychoeducation, cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) and family therapy when added to TAU (i.e. pharmacotherapy) over a year for adults (18–65 years) with bipolar disorder. The relative risk of relapse was sourced from two network meta-analyses and applied to the depressive phase in the base case. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis and one-way sensitivity analyses were conducted, assessing robustness of results.
Results
Carer psychoeducation was preferred in the base case when the willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold is below A$1000 per QALY gained and A$1500 per DALY averted. Brief psychoeducation was preferred when WTP is between A$1000 and A$300 000 per QALY gained and A$1500 and A$450 000 per DALY averted. Family therapy was only preferred at WTP thresholds above A$300 000 per QALY gained or A$450 000 per DALY averted. In sensitivity analyses, brief psychoeducation was the preferred therapy. Psychoeducation and CBT were dominated (more costly and less effective) in base-case and sensitivity analyses.
Conclusions
Carer and brief psychoeducation were found to be the most cost-effective psychosocial therapies, supporting use as adjunctive treatments for adults with bipolar disorder and their families in Australia.
Previous studies have reported comorbidities of autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITD), including Hashimoto’s disease (HT) and Graves’ disease (GD), and celiac disease (CeD), as well as the possible beneficial effects of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on AITD. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether there is a genetic causal relationship between AITD and CeD, while the beneficial effects on a GFD are controversial. This study aim to explore the causal relationship between CeD and AITD, particularly with HT, and to determine whether a GFD is beneficial for AITD. We performed a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis on data from the largest meta-analysis summary statistics of AITD, CeD and GFD. Genetic instrumental variables were established by pinpointing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that relate to corresponding factors. In assessing sensitivity and heterogeneity, we conducted examinations of MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, weighted mode, and MR Egger intercept tests. HT was found to play a pathogenic role in increasing the risk of CeD (ORIVW = 1.544 [95%CI 1.153-2.068], p = 0.00355), and our Mendelian randomization study does not support genetic liability related to CeD with GD (Graves’ disease) and GFD with AITD. This study supports the positive correlation between HT risk and CeD risk, while GFD has no protective effect on AITD and may exert its effect through other mechanisms. These findings provide valuable insights into potential targets for disease intervention and treatment at the genetic level.
Direct numerical simulations have been conducted to explore the coupling effect of the thermoelectric effect and vertical convection (VC) in a square cavity composed of liquid lithium and stainless steel under different Hartmann numbers at $Ra=10^5$. By leveraging thermoelectric phenomena, an innovative approach is proposed to actively modulate heat transfer efficiency. The core concept lies in modulating the intensity of large-scale circulation (LSC) in VC systems through the torque generated by the interaction between thermoelectric currents and magnetic fields via Lorentz forces. The findings reveal that when the torque aligns with the direction of LSC induced by pure buoyancy, both momentum and heat transfer are enhanced. However, due to the magnetic damping itself, this enhancement is not sustained indefinitely, resulting in a trend of initial increase followed by decline in both momentum and heat transfer efficiency. Conversely, when the magnetic field direction is reversed, causing the Lorentz force torque to oppose the buoyancy-driven circulation, both momentum and heat transfer efficiency diminish until the flow reverses. By varying the magnetic field intensity, three distinct flow regimes are identified: the buoyancy-dominated regime, the thermoelectric-dominated regime and the magnetic-damping-dominated regime. The transition between the buoyancy-dominated regime and thermoelectric-dominated regime – specifically, the onset of flow reversal – is analysed through a boundary-layer–bulk–boundary-layer coupling model. This model enables precise prediction of the critical $Ha$ based on the torque balance between buoyancy forces and thermoelectrically induced Lorentz forces, and demonstrates close agreement with numerical simulations.
CD33 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease primarily through its role in inhibiting the clearance of beta-amyloid (Aβ). However, genetic studies yield mixed results and it is unclear whether the impact of CD33 is specific to Alzheimer’s disease or related to broader neurodegenerative processes. Interestingly, CD33 has also been shown to interact with the hepatitis B (HBV) and C viruses (HCV).
Aims
This study aims to investigate the effects of CD33 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on cognitive functions across diverse populations, including healthy controls, individuals with chronic HBV or HCV and those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Method
We genotyped CD33 SNPs in 563 participants using the Affymetrix platform. Participants’ cognitive functions were cross-sectionally assessed using a neuropsychological test battery spanning six domains.
Results
Our analysis revealed that CD33 SNP variations had no significant cognitive impact on healthy individuals or Parkinson’s disease patients. However, chronic HBV and HCV patients exhibited significant cognitive differences, particularly in memory, related to CD33 SNP genotypes. Moderation analysis indicated a heightened influence of CD33 SNPs on cognitive functions in chronic HBV and HCV individuals. Our data also suggest that inflammation severity may modulate the cognitive effects in hepatitis patients with specific CD33 SNPs.
Conclusions
This study highlights the importance of CD33 SNPs in cognitive outcomes, emphasising their role in the context of chronic viral hepatitis. It contributes to understanding the cognitive profiles influenced by CD33 SNPs and posits CD33’s potential contribution to neurodegenerative disease progression, potentially intensified by HBV/HCV-induced inflammation.
n-3 PUFA, including ALA, EPA and DHA, are widely found in plant oils and marine organisms. These fatty acids demonstrate significant biological effects, and their adequate intake is essential for maintaining health. However, modern diets often lack sufficient n-3 PUFA, especially among populations that consume little fish or seafood, leading to a growing interest in n-3 PUFA supplementation in nutrition and health research. In recent decades, the role of n-3 PUFA in preventing and treating various diseases has gained increasing attention, particularly in cardiovascular, neurological, ophthalmic, allergic, hepatic and oncological fields. In orthopaedics, n-3 PUFA exert beneficial effects through several mechanisms, including modulation of inflammatory responses, enhancement of cartilage repair and regulation of bone metabolism. These effects demonstrate potential for the treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, fractures, sarcopenia and spinal degenerative diseases. This review summarises the clinical applications of n-3 PUFA, with a focus on their research progress in the field of orthopaedics, and explores their potential in the treatment of orthopaedic diseases.
Cavitation bubble pulsation and liquid jet loads are the main causes of hydraulic machinery erosion. Methods to weaken the load influences have always been hot topics of related research. In this work, a method of attaching a viscous layer to a rigid wall is investigated in order to reduce cavitation pulsations and liquid jet loads, using both numerical simulations and experiments. A multiphase flow model incorporating viscous effects has been developed using the Eulerian finite element method (EFEM), and experimental methods of a laser-induced bubble near the viscous layer attached on a rigid wall have been carefully designed. The effects of the initial bubble–wall distance, the thickness of the viscous layer, and the viscosity on bubble pulsation, migration and wall pressure load are investigated. The results show that the bubble migration distance, the normalised thickness of the oil layer and the wall load generally decrease with the initial bubble–wall distance or the oil-layer parameters. Quantitative analysis reveals that when the initial bubble–wall distance remains unchanged, there exists a demarcation line for the comparison of the bubble period and the reference period (the bubble period without viscous layer under the same initial bubble–wall distance), and a logarithmic relationship is observed that $\delta \propto \log_{10} \mu ^*$, where $\delta =h/R_{max}$ is the thickness of the viscous layer h normalised by the maximum bubble radius $R_{max}$, $\mu ^* = \mu /({R_{max }}\sqrt {{\rho }{{\mathop {P}\nolimits } _{{atm}}}})$ is the dynamic viscosity $\mu$ normalised by water density $ \rho $ and atmospheric pressure $P_{atm}$. The results of this paper can provide technical support for related studies of hydraulic cavitation erosion.
This chapter features a conversation between two set designers, Jack Magaw and Regina García, who have designed for Wilson productions at several regional theatres in the Chicago metropolitan area. In doing so, it sheds light on a vitally important area within Wilsonian production history, thereby adding to the ever-expanding field of Wilson studies. Both artists reflect on how they see their roles as set designers, what serves as inspiration when designing for a Wilson production, and how Black cultural spaces of Chicago shapes their work.
