This chapter looks at how and why Churchill has become such a divisive figure. It opens with a description of recent debates in the public discourse and on social media. It then briefly discuses Churchill’s reputation during his lifetime before recounting the role that he played in shaping his own legacy through his words, written and spoken, and through the creation of his archive and official biography. The authors then examine the long and complex historiography of Churchill, highlighting some of the most significant challenges to the dominant Churchillian narrative. Particular attention is paid to the more recent politicising of Churchill as a result of debates over Brexit, empire and race.
A case of neonatal myasthenia gravis is reported in the infant of an asymptomatic thymectomized mother with comparably elevated acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody titers. The mother remained asymptomatic despite elevated antibody titers while the infant became asymptomatic in association with the disappearance of the AChR antibody. It is suggested that the AChR antibody plays an essential role in the development of neonatal myasthenia gravis. It is also suggested that a thymic factor is necessary for the development of clinical symptomatology accounting for the lack of correlation between the clinical state of the mother and infant.
We studied exclusion policies and child care center directors' opinions regarding antibiotic use for childhood illnesses. Among 135 respondents, 96.9% reported that they had written policies on exclusion of children for acute illnesses. Although 52.4% of respondents agreed that children are prescribed antibiotics unnecessarily, 89.1% believed that parents pressure physicians to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics.
The first recognized outbreak of haemorrhagic colitis due to Escherichia coli O 157. H7 in the United Kingdom affected at least 24 persons living in East Anglia over a 2-week period. Theillnesses were characterized by severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea of short duration. Eleven patients were admitted to hospital and there was one death. Patients were mainly adult women who had not eaten out of the home in the 2 weeks before onset. Unlike previously reported outbreaks hamburgers were not the vehicle of infection, and a case-control study suggested that handling vegetables, and particularly potatoes, was the important risk factor.
We show that the usual notion of constraint propagation is but one of a number of similar inferences useful in quantitative reasoning about physical objects. These inferences are expressed formally as rules for the propagation of ‘labeled intervals’ through equations. We prove the rules' correctness and illustrate their utility for reasoning about objects (such as motors or transmissions) which assume a continuum of different states. The inferences are the basis of a ‘mechanical design compiler’, which has correctly produced detailed designs from ‘high level’ descriptions for a variety of power transmission and temperature sensing systems.
In the past historians of the Anglo-Irish union have concentrated largely on the leading political figures. Peel, O’Connell, Gladstone, Parnell, Salisbury, Redmond, Asquith and Lloyd George and their Irish policies have all received detailed attention. For the years following the onset of the great agricultural depression, this tendency has been inevitably reinforced by the turmoil of politics following the Third Reform Act and Gladstone’s attempt to introduce home rule for Ireland.
Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.
The resistivity, Hall, and thermopower tensors are calculated for the normal state of oxide superconductors on the assumption of band quasiparticle behavior. The shape of the resistivity ραβin the metallic a-b plane is consistent with ordinary impurity and electron-phonon scattering, but the magnitude is larger than predicted. The Hall tensor is predicted to be hole-like for orbits in the a-b plane but electron-like for a-c or b-c orbits, while the thermopower is predicted to be electron-like in the a-b plane and hole-like along the c-axis. Single crystal experiments have confirmed some of these predictions for the Hall tensor.
