Bidirectional associations between parenting stress and child psychopathology: The moderating role of maternal affection

Parenting stress and child psychopathology are closely linked in parent-child dyads, but how the bidirectional association varies across childhood and adolescence, and shifts depending on maternal affection are not well understood. Guided by the transactional model of development, this longitudinal, prospective study examined the bidirectional relations between parenting stress and child internalizing and externalizing problems and investigated the moderating role of maternal affection from childhood to adolescence. Participants were from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a diverse, nationally representative sample of 2,143 caregiving mothers who completed assessments at children ages 5, 9, and 15. Using cross-lagged panel modeling, we found bidirectional effects between parenting stress and child internalizing and externalizing problems. However, additional multigroup analyses showed that bidirectional associations depend on the levels of maternal affection. In the high maternal affection group, parenting stress at age 5 predicted higher internalizing and externalizing problems at age 9, and reverse child-to-parent paths were found from age 9 to age 15. In contrast, only one cross-lagged path was found in the low maternal affection group. Findings suggest that maternal affection can heighten the transactional associations between parenting stress and child psychopathology.
Wake of wavy elliptic cylinder at a low Reynolds number: wavelength effect

Effects of the spanwise wavelength (λ) of a sinusoidal wavy cylinder with elliptic cross-section on wake structures and fluid forces are numerically investigated at a Reynolds number Re = 100. A wide range of the wavelength, $0.43 \le \lambda /{D_m} \le 8.59$, is considered with a wave amplitude of a/Dm = 0.048, where Dm is the hydraulic diameter of the wavy cylinder. Based on vortical structures, Strouhal number (St) and wake closure length (Lc), fluid forces, streamline topologies and spatio-temporal evolutions of the near wake, five distinct flow patterns (I–V) are identified depending on λ/Dm. The drag force reaches its minimum in pattern III, the fluctuating lift force is zero in flow patterns III and IV. Distinct from the classical flow where alternate vortex shedding occurs synchronously over the entire cylinder span, flow pattern IV has alternate vortex shedding over a one half-wavelength of the wavy elliptic cylinder, antiphased with that over the other half-wavelength, thus leading to zero fluctuating lift over one complete wavelength. A thorough comparison of the wakes is made between the wavy elliptic cylinder and wavy circular or square cylinder, distinguishing the underlying flow physics behind the salient behaviours observed.
Associations of the pre-pregnancy weight status with anaemia and the erythropoiesis-related micronutrient status

Objective:
The coexistence of underweight (UW) and overweight (OW)/obese (OB) at the population level is known to affect iron deficiency (ID) anaemia (IDA), but how the weight status affects erythropoiesis during pregnancy is less clear at a population scale. This study investigated associations between the pre-pregnancy BMI (pBMI) and erythropoiesis-related nutritional deficiencies.
Design:Anthropometry, blood biochemistry and 24-h dietary recall data were collected during prenatal care visits. The weight status was defined based on the pBMI. Mild nutrition deficiency-related erythropoiesis was defined if individuals had an ID, folate depletion or a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Setting:The Nationwide Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (Pregnant NAHSIT 2017–2019).
Participants:We included 1456 women aged 20 to 45 years with singleton pregnancies.
Results:Among these pregnant women, 9·6 % were UW, and 29·2 % were either OW (15·8 %) or OB (13·4 %). A U-shaped association between the pBMI and IDA was observed, with decreased odds (OR; 95 % CI) for OW subjects (0·6; 95 % CI (0·4, 0·9)) but increased odds for UW (1·2; 95 % CI (0·8, 2·0)) and OB subjects (1·2; 95 % CI (0·8, 1·8)). The pBMI was positively correlated with the prevalence of a mild nutritional deficiency. Compared to normal weight, OB pregnant women had 3·4-fold (3·4; 95 % CI (1·4, 8·1)) higher odds for multiple mild nutritional deficiencies, while UW individuals had lowest odds (0·3; 95 % CI (0·1, 1·2)). A dietary analysis showed negative relationships of pBMI with energy, carbohydrates, protein, Fe and folate intakes, but positive relationship with fat intakes.
Conclusion:The pre-pregnancy weight status can possibly serve as a good nutritional screening tool for preventing IDA during pregnancy.
Trichinella spiralis: inflammation modulator

The hygiene hypothesis posits that the decreased incidence of parasitic infection in developed countries may underlie an increased prevalence of allergic and autoimmune diseases in these countries. As unique inflammation modulator of intracellular parasitism, Trichinella spiralis, or its excretory–secretory (ES) product, shows improved responses to allergies, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatic arthritis and autoimmune encephalomyelitis by exerting immunomodulatory effects on both innate and adaptive immune cells in animal models. Research has shown that T. spiralis differs from other helminths in manipulation of the host immune response not only by well-known characteristics of its life cycle, but also by its inflammation modulation pathway. How the parasite achieves inflammation modulation has not been fully elucidated yet. This review will generalize the mechanism and focuses on ES immunomodulatory molecules of T. spiralis that may be important for developing new therapeutics for inflammatory disorders.
Latent class analysis of the multivariate Delirium Index in long-term care settings

Background:
A few studies examine the time evolution of delirium in long-term care (LTC) settings. In this work, we analyze the multivariate Delirium Index (DI) time evolution in LTC settings.
Methods:The multivariate DI was measured weekly for six months in seven LTC facilities, located in Montreal and Quebec City. Data were analyzed using a hidden Markov chain/latent class model (HMC/LC).
Results:The analysis sample included 276 LTC residents. Four ordered latent classes were identified: fairly healthy (low “disorientation” and “memory impairment,” negligible other DI symptoms), moderately ill (low “inattention” and “disorientation,” medium “memory impairment”), clearly sick (low “disorganized thinking” and “altered level of consciousness,” medium “inattention,” “disorientation,” “memory impairment” and “hypoactivity”), and very sick (low “hypoactivity,” medium “altered level of consciousness,” high “inattention,” “disorganized thinking,” “disorientation” and “memory impairment”). Four course types were also identified: stable, improvement, worsening, and non-monotone. Class order was associated with increasing cognitive impairment, frequency of both prevalent/incident delirium and dementia, mortality rate, and decreasing performance in ADL.
Conclusion:Four ordered latent classes and four course types were found in LTC residents. These results are similar to those reported previously in acute care (AC); however, the proportion of very sick residents at enrolment was larger in LTC residents than in AC patients. In clinical settings, these findings could help identify participants with a chronic clinical disorder. Our HMC/LC approach may help understand coexistent disorders, e.g. delirium and dementia.
Longitudinal patterns of delirium severity scores in long-term care settings

Background:
The delirium index (DI) is a valid measure of delirium severity. We proposed to describe longitudinal patterns of severity scores in older long-term care (LTC) residents.
Methods:A prospective cohort study of 280 residents in seven LTC facilities in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada, was conducted. DI, Barthel Index, Mini-Mental State Examination, Charlson Comorbidity Index, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, dementia assessment by an MD, and prevalent or incident probable delirium defined according to the Confusion Assessment Method were completed at baseline. The DI was also assessed weekly for 6 months. Demographic characteristics were abstracted from resident charts. Cluster analysis for longitudinal data was used to describe longitudinal patterns of DI scores.
Results:During the 24 weeks following enrolment, 28 (10.0%) of 280 residents who had prevalent delirium and 76 (27.1%) who had incident delirium were included in our analysis. Average observation period was 18.3 weeks. Four basic types of time evolution patterns were discovered: Improvement, Worsening, Fluctuating, and Steady, including 22%, 18%, 25%, and 35%, of the residents, respectively. With the exception of the Worsening pattern, the average trajectory was stabilized at the 4th week or earlier. Poor baseline cognitive and physical function and greater severity of delirium predicted worse trajectories over 24 weeks.
Conclusions:The longitudinal patterns of DI scores found in LTC residents resemble those found in an earlier study of delirium in acute care (AC) settings. However, compared to AC patients, LTC residents have a smaller DI variability over time, a less frequent Improvement pattern, and more frequent Worsening and Fluctuating patterns.
Hb and dyslipidaemia as predicting markers of serum alanine aminotransferase elevation in Chinese adolescents

Objective
Fe is an essential element for erythropoiesis and Hb synthesis. High Hb levels affect the blood’s viscosity and are associated with cardiovascular dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to examine relationships of Hb and cardiometabolic abnormalities with the risk of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevation in adolescents.
DesignA population-based, cross-sectional study.
SettingNational Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (2010–2011, adolescents).
SubjectsHealthy adolescents aged 13–18 years.
ResultsIn total, 1941 adolescents (963 boys and 978 girls) were entered in the study. The mean age was 15·3 (sd 0·1) years (boys, 15·3 (sd 0·1) years; girls, 15·2 (sd 0·1) years). ALT tertile cut-off points for boys were 11 and 16 U/l, and for girls were 9 and 12 U/l. Girls without dyslipidaemia and presenting in the highest quartile (Q1) of Hb (>13·6 g/dl) were 1·89 and 3·76 times more likely to have raised serum ALT (9 and >12 U/l, respectively) than the reference (lowest quartile of Hb (Q1), <12·4 g/dl). Moreover, for those girls with dyslipidaemia, serum ALT seemed to increase with an increase in Hb levels. Specifically, girls with dyslipidaemia and Hb levels of 12·4, 13·1 and 13·6 g/dl were, respectively, 2·86, 3·53 and 5·64 times more likely to have elevated serum ALT levels (>12 U/l) than the reference (Q1 of Hb, <12·4 g/dl). The only effect found in boys was for those who had dyslipidaemia and presenting in Q4 of Hb (>15·4 g/dl), who were 7·40 times more likely to have elevated serum ALT of >16 U/l than the reference (Q1 of Hb, <14·1 g/dl).
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that an increased Hb level is a predictor of elevated serum ALT in adolescent girls with dyslipidaemia. Our study also highlights the importance of further research to establish cut-off points for Hb and its utility in diagnosing and preventing the onset of dyslipidaemia in adolescents.
Six-month trajectories of self-reported depressive symptoms in long-term care

Background:
Depression is a common problem in long-term care (LTC) settings. We sought to characterize depression symptom trajectories over six months among older residents, and to identify resident characteristics at baseline that predict symptom trajectory.
Methods:This study was a secondary analysis of data from a six-month prospective, observational, and multi-site study. Severity of depressive symptoms was assessed with the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) at baseline and with up to six monthly follow-up assessments. Participants were 130 residents with a Mini-Mental State Examination score of 15 or more at baseline and of at least two of the six monthly follow-up assessments. Individual resident GDS trajectories were grouped using hierarchical clustering. The baseline predictors of a more severe trajectory were identified using the Proportional Odds Model.
Results:Three clusters of depression symptom trajectory were found that described “lower,” “intermediate,” and “higher” levels of depressive symptoms over time (mean GDS scores for three clusters at baseline were 2.2, 4.9, and 9.0 respectively). The GDS scores in all groups were generally stable over time. Baseline predictors of a more severe trajectory were as follows: Initial GDS score of 7 or more, female sex, LTC residence for less than 12 months, and corrected visual impairment.
Conclusions:The six-month course of depressive symptoms in LTC is generally stable. Most residents who experience a more severe symptom trajectory can be identified at baseline.
Serum ferritin contributes to racial or geographic disparities in metabolic syndrome in Taiwan

Objectives
Asians and Pacific Islanders have higher circulating serum ferritin (SF) compared with Caucasians but the clinical significance of this is unclear. There is a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Taiwanese Indigenous than Han Chinese. Genetically, Indigenous are related to Austronesians and account for 2 % of Taiwan's population. We tested the hypothesis that accumulation of Fe in the body contributes to the ethnic/racial disparities in MetS in Taiwan.
DesignA population-based, cross-sectional study.
SettingNational Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan and Penghu Island.
SubjectsA total of 2638 healthy adults aged ≥19 years. Three ethnic groups were included.
ResultsHan Chinese and Indigenous people had comparable levels of SF. Austronesia origin was independently associated with MetS (OR = 2·61, 95 % CI 2·02, 3·36). After multiple adjustments, the odds for MetS (OR = 2·49, 95 % CI 1·15, 5·28) was significantly higher among Indigenous people in the highest SF tertile compared with those in the lowest tertile. Hakka and Penghu Islanders yielded the lowest risks (OR = 1·08, 95 % CI 0·44, 2·65 and OR = 1·21, 95 % CI 0·52, 2·78, respectively). Indigenous people in the highest SF tertile had increased risk for abnormal levels of fasting glucose (OR = 2·34, 95 % CI 1·27, 4·29), TAG (OR = 1·94, 95 % CI 1·11, 3·39) and HDL-cholesterol (OR = 2·10, 95 % CI 1·18, 3·73) than those in the lowest SF tertile.
ConclusionsOur results raise the possibility that ethnic/racial differences in body Fe store susceptibility may contribute to racial and geographic disparities in MetS.

Identification and structure analysis of three tilapia species using microsatellite markers

Seventeen special loci were selected from 77 microsatellite markers to distinguish three varieties of tilapias, including the six differential loci UNH636, UNH117, UNH172, UNH738, UNH878 and UNH896 in Oreochromis aureus; five differential loci UNH913, UNH907, UNH222, UNH980 and UNH880 in O. niloticus; and six differential loci of UNH876, UNH899, UNH853, UNH932, UNH933 and UNH773 in O. mossambicus. Any one of the 17 loci could amplify particular bands to distinguish one tilapia from the other two. The genetic structure of O. aureus, O. niloticus and O. mossambicus stocks and their phylogenetic relationships were also analysed using these 17 loci. In total 142 alleles were detected, and the average number of alleles per locus was 8.35. Additionally, a clustering analysis was performed based on the result of the Popgen32 software package and phylogenetic trees were constructed by MEGA4 using the unweighted pair group method using arithmetic average (UPGMA). The results showed that the mean value of observed heterozygosity was 0.0941, 0.5490 and 0.2588, the mean value of expected heterozygosity was 0.1089, 0.7230 and 0.1965, and the polymorphism information content was 0.0869, 0.7149 and 0.1643, in O. aureus, O. niloticus and O. mossambicus, respectively. The UPGMA tree demonstrated that O. aureus was more closely related to O. mossambicus than to O. niloticus.

By using Krätschmer-Huffman synthesis and HPLC separation method we have isolated a series of novel fullerenes and endohedral fullerenes. Various spectroscopic techniques, e.g., MS, NMR, UV-vis-NIR, TEM, X-ray diffraction spectrometry etc., were adopted to characterize the isolated fullerenes. Several fullerenes were revealed to hold novel structures and electronic properties. For examples, C80(D5d) was isolated and characterized to have an ellipsoidal structure which is in fact one of the shortest SW-nanotubes; The isolation of Sc2@C66 breaks the well-known isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) for the first time, which shows that the unconventional fullerenes may be dramatically stabilized through encaging metal atoms; Sc2C2@C84 is a novel molecular endohedral fullerene in which the Sc2C2 cluster rotates rapidly along the main C2 axis of C84(D2d). This fullerene is predicted to be a molecular magnet and may be used as nano-switcher in electronics.
