We present the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey conducted with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). EMU aims to deliver the touchstone radio atlas of the southern hemisphere. We introduce EMU and review its science drivers and key science goals, updated and tailored to the current ASKAP five-year survey plan. The development of the survey strategy and planned sky coverage is presented, along with the operational aspects of the survey and associated data analysis, together with a selection of diagnostics demonstrating the imaging quality and data characteristics. We give a general description of the value-added data pipeline and data products before concluding with a discussion of links to other surveys and projects and an outline of EMU’s legacy value.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with advanced epigenetic age cross-sectionally, but the association between these variables over time is unclear. This study conducted meta-analyses to test whether new-onset PTSD diagnosis and changes in PTSD symptom severity over time were associated with changes in two metrics of epigenetic aging over two time points.
Methods
We conducted meta-analyses of the association between change in PTSD diagnosis and symptom severity and change in epigenetic age acceleration/deceleration (age-adjusted DNA methylation age residuals as per the Horvath and GrimAge metrics) using data from 7 military and civilian cohorts participating in the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium PTSD Epigenetics Workgroup (total N = 1,367).
Results
Meta-analysis revealed that the interaction between Time 1 (T1) Horvath age residuals and new-onset PTSD over time was significantly associated with Horvath age residuals at T2 (meta β = 0.16, meta p = 0.02, p-adj = 0.03). The interaction between T1 Horvath age residuals and changes in PTSD symptom severity over time was significantly related to Horvath age residuals at T2 (meta β = 0.24, meta p = 0.05). No associations were observed for GrimAge residuals.
Conclusions
Results indicated that individuals who developed new-onset PTSD or showed increased PTSD symptom severity over time evidenced greater epigenetic age acceleration at follow-up than would be expected based on baseline age acceleration. This suggests that PTSD may accelerate biological aging over time and highlights the need for intervention studies to determine if PTSD treatment has a beneficial effect on the aging methylome.
The Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) denotes the geographical area that drains into the Mekong River and its tributaries within the Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam. Hydropower development of the LMB’s water resources is proceeding at a rapid pace (Friend, Arthur, & Keskinen, 2009). In addition to 124 hydropower projects at various stages of development, up to twelve mainstream dams are planned for the LMB (ICEM, 2010; MRC, 2010). This large- scale hydro-development involves countless trade-offs of interests, creating clear winners and losers. One of the most significant tradeoffs is that between the ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ sectors.

Meaningful medical data are crucial for response teams in the aftermath of disaster. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems have revolutionized healthcare by facilitating real-time data collection, storage, and analysis. These capabilities are particularly relevant for post-disaster and austere environments. fEMR, an EMR system designed for such settings, enables rapid documentation of patient information, treatments, and outcomes, ensuring critical data capture.
Objectives:
Data collected through fEMR can be leveraged to perform comprehensive monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of emergency medical services, assess operational needs and efficiency, and support public health syndromic surveillance.
Method/Description:
Analyzing these data identifies patterns and trends or assesses treatment effectiveness. This insight facilitates data-driven decision-making and the optimization of medical protocols. fEMR’s real-time reports enhance situational awareness and operational coordination among response units. The aggregated data can detect trends, classify case-mix, and facilitate after-action reviews, contributing to continuous improvement in emergency preparedness and response strategies. The system also supports fulfilling reporting requirements for health agencies and funding organizations, ensuring accountability and transparency.
Results/Outcomes:
EMRs like fEMR are vital for emergency response teams, supporting immediate patient care and ongoing M&E of disaster response efforts. Its robust data management capabilities support evidence-based practices and strategic planning, improving the effectiveness of emergency medical services in disaster scenarios.
Conclusion:
The effective use of fEMR in disaster response scenarios highlights its significance in enhancing operational efficiency, ensuring accountability, and improving the overall effectiveness of emergency medical services through comprehensive data management and real-time reporting.
Common neuroanatomical regions are associated with both states of anorexia nervosa (AN) and autistic characteristics, but restoration of body mass index (BMI) has been associated with decreased presentation of autistic characteristics in some individuals with AN. This study aims to examine neuroanatomical correlates associated with autistic characteristics in those with acute anorexia nervosa (ac-AN) and those previously diagnosed with AN but whose weight has been restored (WR). In total, 183 individuals (healthy controls [HCs] = 67; n[ac-AN] = 68; n[WR] = 48) from the Brain imaging of Emotion And Cognition of adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa (BEACON) study were included, with autistic characteristics determined in both ac-AN and WR individuals (n = 116). To further examine BMI, ac-AN and WR group associations were compared. Random forest regression (RFR) models examined whether autistic characteristics and morphology of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were able to predict future levels of social anhedonia and alexithymia. Group-wise differences were identified within the volume and surface area of the MFG and OFC, which were unrelated to BMI. Autistic characteristics were inversely associated with MFG and ACC volume, with differences in associations between ac-AN and WR groups seen in the surface area of the MFG. RFR models identified moderate-to-weak performance and found that autistic characteristics were not important predictive features in a priori and exploratory models. Findings suggest that the presence of autistic characteristics in those with ac-AN are associated with the volume of the MFG and are unrelated to BMI restoration.
Herbaceous perennials must annually rebuild the aboveground photosynthetic architecture from carbohydrates stored in crowns, rhizomes, and roots. Knowledge of carbohydrate utilization and storage can inform management decisions and improve control outcomes for invasive perennials. We monitored the nonstructural carbohydrates in a population of the hybrid Bohemian knotweed [Polygonum ×bohemicum (J. Chrtek & Chrtková) Zika & Jacobson [cuspidatum × sachalinense]; syn.: Fallopia ×bohemica (Chrtek and Chrtková) J.P. Bailey] and in Japanese knotweed [Polygonum cuspidatum Siebold & Zucc.; syn.: Fallopia japonica (Houtt.) Ronse Decr.]. Carbohydrate storage in crowns followed seasonal patterns typical of perennial herbaceous dicots corresponding to key phenological events. Starch was consistently the highest nonstructural carbohydrate present. Sucrose levels did not show a consistent inverse relationship with starch levels. Lateral distribution of starch in rhizomes and, more broadly, total nonstructural carbohydrates sampled before dormancy break showed higher levels in rhizomes compared with crowns. Total nonstructural carbohydrate levels in crowns reached seasonal lows at an estimated 22.6% of crown dry weight after accumulating 1,453.8 growing degree days (GDD) by the end of June, mainly due to depleted levels of stored starch, with the estimated minimum of 12.3% reached by 1,220.3 GDD accumulated by mid-June. Depletion corresponded to rapid development of vegetative canopy before entering the reproductive phase in August. Maximum starch accumulation in crowns followed complete senescence of aboveground tissues by mid- to late October. Removal of aboveground shoot biomass in late June to early July with removal of vegetation regrowth in early September before senescence would optimize the use of time and labor to deplete carbohydrate reserves. Additionally, foliar-applied systemic herbicide translocation to belowground tissue should be maximized with applications in late August through early fall to optimize downward translocation with assimilate movement to rebuild underground storage reserves. Fall applications should be made before loss of healthy leaf tissue, with the window for control typically ending by late September in Minnesota.
In the last 50 years, the field of paleobiology has undergone a computational revolution that opened multiple new avenues for recording, storing, and analyzing vital data on the history of life on Earth. With these advances, the amount of data available for research has grown, but so too has our responsibility to ensure that our data tools and infrastructures continue to innovate in order to best serve our diverse community. This review focuses on data equity in paleobiology, an aspirational goal, wherein data in all forms are collected, stored, shared and analyzed in a responsible, equitable, and sustainable manner. While there have been many advancements across the last five decades, inequities persist. Our most significant challenges relate to several interconnected factors, including ethical data collection, sustainable infrastructure, socioeconomic biases, and global inequalities. We highlight the ways in which data equity is critical for paleobiology and stress the need for collaborative efforts across the paleobiological community to urgently address these data equity challenges. We also provide recommendations for actions from individuals, teams, academic publishers, and academic societies in order to continue enhancing data equity and ensuring an equitable and sustainable future for our field.
Objectives/Goals: We describe the prevalence of individuals with household exposure to SARS-CoV-2, who subsequently report symptoms consistent with COVID-19, while having PCR results persistently negative for SARS-CoV-2 (S[+]/P[-]). We assess whether paired serology can assist in identifying the true infection status of such individuals. Methods/Study Population: In a multicenter household transmission study, index patients with SARS-CoV-2 were identified and enrolled together with their household contacts within 1 week of index’s illness onset. For 10 consecutive days, enrolled individuals provided daily symptom diaries and nasal specimens for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Contacts were categorized into 4 groups based on presence of symptoms (S[+/-]) and PCR positivity (P[+/-]). Acute and convalescent blood specimens from these individuals (30 days apart) were subjected to quantitative serologic analysis for SARS-CoV-2 anti-nucleocapsid, spike, and receptor-binding domain antibodies. The antibody change in S[+]/P[-] individuals was assessed by thresholds derived from receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of S[+]/P[+] (infected) versusS[-]/P[-] (uninfected). Results/Anticipated Results: Among 1,433 contacts, 67% had ≥1 SARS-CoV-2 PCR[+] result, while 33% remained PCR[-]. Among the latter, 55% (n = 263) reported symptoms for at least 1 day, most commonly congestion (63%), fatigue (63%), headache (62%), cough (59%), and sore throat (50%). A history of both previous infection and vaccination was present in 37% of S[+]/P[-] individuals, 38% of S[-]/P[-], and 21% of S[+]/P[+] (P<0.05). Vaccination alone was present in 37%, 41%, and 52%, respectively. ROC analyses of paired serologic testing of S[+]/P[+] (n = 354) vs. S[-]/P[-] (n = 103) individuals found anti-nucleocapsid data had the highest area under the curve (0.87). Based on the 30-day antibody change, 6.9% of S[+]/P[-] individuals demonstrated an increased convalescent antibody signal, although a similar seroresponse in 7.8% of the S[-]/P[-] group was observed. Discussion/Significance of Impact: Reporting respiratory symptoms was common among household contacts with persistent PCR[-] results. Paired serology analyses found similar seroresponses between S[+]/P[-] and S[-]/P[-] individuals. The symptomatic-but-PCR-negative phenomenon, while frequent, is unlikely attributable to true SARS-CoV-2 infections that go missed by PCR.
In their 2022 publication in this journal, Suber and colleagues attempt to apply crime mapping to the illicit trade of cultural objects from the Middle East to establish a causal relationship between conflict and heritage looting. The article calls for comments by readers on the methodological approaches and results (p. 559). This commentary addresses the article’s shortcomings, specifically highlighting its inadequate grounding in existing literature, methodological limitations, and problematic data approach.
The growing popularity of home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb, partly fueled by hosts’ ability to evade local taxes and regulations, has been shown to elevate housing costs by reallocating long-term housing units to the short-term rental market. This study assesses whether enhanced tax enforcement can mitigate this trend. We analyze staggered tax collection agreements between Airbnb and Florida counties, wherein Airbnb collects taxes from the hosts directly. Using a difference-in-differences methodology, we find these agreements significantly slow the growth of housing costs, highlighting the importance of tax policy in addressing the sharing economy’s influence on housing affordability.
The Early Minimally Invasive Removal of Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ENRICH) trial demonstrated that minimally invasive surgery to treat spontaneous lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) improved functional outcomes. We aimed to explore current management trends for spontaneous lobar ICH in Canada to assess practice patterns and determine whether further randomized controlled trials are needed to clarify the role of surgical intervention.
Methods:
Neurologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists and trainees in these specialties were invited to complete a 16-question survey exploring three areas: (1) current management for spontaneous lobar ICH at their institution, (2) perceived influence of ENRICH on their practice and (3) perceived need for additional clinical trial data. Standard descriptive statistics were used to report categorical variables. The χ2 test was used to compare responses across specialties and career stages.
Results:
The survey was sent to 433 physicians, and 101 (23.3%) responded. Sixty-eight percent of participants reported that prior to publication of the ENRICH trial, spontaneous lobar ICH was primarily managed conservatively, with surgery reserved for life-threatening situations. Forty-three percent of participants did not foresee a significant increase in surgical intervention at their institution. Of neurosurgical respondents, 33% remained hesitant to offer surgical intervention beyond lifesaving operations. Only 5% reported routinely using specifically designed technologies to evacuate ICH. Seventy percent reported that another randomized controlled trial comparing nonsurgical to surgical management for spontaneous lobar ICH is needed.
Conclusions:
There is significant practice variability in the management of spontaneous lobar ICH across Canadian institutions, stressing the need for additional clinical trial data to determine the role of surgical intervention.
In the State of Ohio, the electric regulatory landscape permits local governments to become energy suppliers to residents and small businesses through community choice aggregation (CCA). Some CCAs provide enrollees 100% renewable electricity. Concurrently, the federal government offers an income tax credit (ITC) for the purchase of a solar array. With policy incentives, it is important to ensure they encourage behavior beyond the baseline scenario without the ITC. This is known as “additionality.” Renewable aggregation programs may crowd out the benefits of the ITC, violating additionality. This paper assesses additionality of the ITC in the context of Ohio’s CCA programs. The actual additionality can depend on whether renewable energy is already being supplied to the site of a solar array. Hence, we study the relationship between CCA and solar adoption probability to determine whether tax incentives are additional. Using panel data methods and post-estimation simulations, we discern if additionality is violated where these programs overlap. We find aggregation programs increase the probability of solar adoption and that $0.79 of every dollar spent on the income tax credit in Ohio is non-additional. This will help policymakers determine the efficacy of funds allocated to their programs.
Earth’s land cover consists of forests, agricultural land, urban settlements and a large, heterogeneous category that includes deserts, grasslands, savannas, shrublands and tundra. This heterogeneous category has eluded a collective designation comparable to that of forests, which has contributed to its omission from multilateral programs and critical global initiatives. Potential designations for this land category – drylands, grasslands, grassy biomes, open ecosystems and rangelands – were evaluated for their relative advantages and disadvantages. Grassy biome is recommended as the most appropriate designation because it conveys a meaning that is distinct from forests, emphasizes that grasses often coexist with other plant growth forms and has great utility for use by multilateral organizations. However, the criteria of tree canopy cover >10% used by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to define forests represents a major obstacle to implementation of the grassy biome designation. This minimal canopy cover infringes on global savannas that occupy 20–25% of global land area. An assessment of the functional plant traits determining the shade and fire tolerance of savanna and forest trees indicates that a minimal tree canopy cover of 45% represents an ecologically appropriate demarcation between savannas and forests.
Anne Smith, Ace Beorchia, and Jaewoo Jung respond to calls for more innovative methods in SAP research by elaborating on the foundations of photographic methods and exploring their relevance for the study of strategizing activities and practices. The authors begin by discussing the increasing interest in visuals in management and organizational research and explain why photographic methods provide unique benefits for advancing strategy as practice research. They then review the use of photography in SAP research – identifying and discussing six SAP research projects in which photographs played a prominent role. Next, they develop and explain a framework to categorize the use of photography in strategy as practice research. Considering two dimensions – the photographs’ creators and the photographs’ role in research – this framework identifies four ways photographs can be used in a research project: outside-in supportive approach, outside-in integrated approach, inside-out supportive approach, and inside-in integrative approach. Based on this framework, the authors highlight the main considerations when undertaking systematic analysis of photographic data. To illustrate how SAP research can benefit from using photographs, they provide an example from longitudinal research studying how daily activities and changes to space are connected to strategic changes and provide a structured analysis of one photo image set extracted from this research project. They conclude by discussing different options in pursuing photographic methods in SAP research.
The global population and status of Snowy Owls Bubo scandiacus are particularly challenging to assess because individuals are irruptive and nomadic, and the breeding range is restricted to the remote circumpolar Arctic tundra. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) uplisted the Snowy Owl to “Vulnerable” in 2017 because the suggested population estimates appeared considerably lower than historical estimates, and it recommended actions to clarify the population size, structure, and trends. Here we present a broad review and status assessment, an effort led by the International Snowy Owl Working Group (ISOWG) and researchers from around the world, to estimate population trends and the current global status of the Snowy Owl. We use long-term breeding data, genetic studies, satellite-GPS tracking, and survival estimates to assess current population trends at several monitoring sites in the Arctic and we review the ecology and threats throughout the Snowy Owl range. An assessment of the available data suggests that current estimates of a worldwide population of 14,000–28,000 breeding adults are plausible. Our assessment of population trends at five long-term monitoring sites suggests that breeding populations of Snowy Owls in the Arctic have decreased by more than 30% over the past three generations and the species should continue to be categorised as Vulnerable under the IUCN Red List Criterion A2. We offer research recommendations to improve our understanding of Snowy Owl biology and future population assessments in a changing world.
