We report on the analysis of virtual powder-diffraction patterns from serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) data collected at an X-ray free-electron laser. Different approaches to binning and normalizing these patterns are discussed with respect to the microstructural characteristics which each highlights. Analysis of SFX data from a powder of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 in this way finds evidence of other trace phases in its microstructure which was not detectable in a standard powder-diffraction measurement. Furthermore, a comparison between two virtual powder pattern integration strategies is shown to yield different diffraction peak broadening, indicating sensitivity to different types of microstrain. This paper is a first step in developing new data analysis methods for microstructure characterization from serial crystallography data.

We analyzed verbal episodic memory learning and recall using the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III to determine how gender differences in AD compare to those seen in normal elderly and whether or not these differences impact assessment of AD. We administered the LM to both an AD and a Control group, each comprised of 21 men and 21 women, and found a large drop in performance from normal elders to AD. Of interest was a gender interaction whereby the women's scores dropped 1.6 times more than the men's did. Control women on average outperformed Control men on every aspect of the test, including immediate recall, delayed recall, and learning. Conversely, AD women tended to perform worse than AD men. Additionally, the LM achieved perfect diagnostic accuracy in discriminant analysis of AD versus Control women, a statistically significantly higher result than for men. The results indicate the LM is a more powerful and reliable tool in detecting AD in women than in men. (JINS, 2011, 17, 654–662)

The future value of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence information to studies in population biology will depend in part on understanding of mtDNA transmission genetics both within cell lineages and between animal generations. A series of stochastic models has been constructed here based on various possibilities concerning this transmission. Several of the models generate predictions inconsistent with available data and, hence, their assumptions are provisionally rejected. Other models cannot yet be falsified. These latter models include assumptions that (1) mtDNA's are sorted through cellular lineages by random allocation to daughter cells in germ cell lineages; (2) the effective intracellular population sizes (nM's) of mtDNA's are small; and (3) sperm may (or may not) provide a low level ‘gene-flow’ bridge between otherwise isolated female lineages. It is hoped that the models have helped to identify and will stimulate further empirical study of various parameters likely to strongly influence mtDNA evolution. In particular, critical experiments or measurements are needed to determine the effective sizes of mtDNA populations in germ (and somatic) cells and to examine possible paternal contributions to zygote mtDNA composition.

Loss of function of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumour suppressor gene through truncating mutations or other means is an early event in most colo-rectal cancer (CRC). The AFC gene encodes a large multifunctional protein that plays key roles in several cellular processes, including the wnt signalling pathway where an intact APC protein is essential for down regulation of β-catenin. The APC protein also plays a role in regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, cell-cell adhesion, cell migration and chromosomal stability during mitosis. Acquisition of a non-functional APC gene can occur by inheritance (in the disease familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)) or by a sporadic event in a somatic cell. Whilst there is strong epidemiological evidence that variation in diet is a major determinant of variation in CRC incidence, conventional adenoma recurrence trials in sporadic cases of the disease have been relatively unsuccessful in identifying potentially protective food components. Since the genetic basis of CRC in FAP and in sporadic CRC is similar, intervention trials in FAP gene carriers provide an attractive strategy for investigation of potential chemo-preventive agents, since smaller numbers of subjects and shorter time frames are needed. The Concerted Action Polyp Prevention (CAPP) 1 Study is using a 2×2 factorial design to test the efficacy of resistant starch (30 g raw potato starch-Hylon VII (1:1, w/w)/d) and aspirin (600 mg/d) in suppressing colo-rectal adenoma formation in young subjects with FAP. Biopsies of macroscopically-normal rectal mucosa are also being collected for assay of putative biomarkers of CRC risk.

A source of light water was started along the outside vertical wall of a cylindrical tank in uniform rotation. Like wall gravity currents studied previously, it had a nose which detrained eddies as it propagated. The gravity current then impinged upon a sloping bottom with the following effects: (i) the gravity current became more laminar; the detrainment of eddies at the nose and off the side of the current ceased; (ii) the gravity current became wider; (iii) the gravity current suddenly slowed and then continued to decelerate; (iv) when the gravity current was slower than the first-mode barotropic shelf wave, a shelf wave was radiated ahead of the gravity current; and (v) the deceleration was significantly greater than the deceleration of a gravity current next to a vertical wall. This is probably attributable to shelf-wave radiation drag, viscous effects and a finite energy source, although the relative importance of each remains an open question.

Device-quality Si films have been prepared by using graphite strip heaters for zone melting poly-Si films deposited on SiO2-coated substrates. The electrical characteristics of these films have been studied by the fabrication and evaluation of thin-film resistors, Mosfets and MOS capacitors. High yields of functional transistor arrays and ring oscillators with promising speed performance have been obtained for CMOS test circuit chips fabricated in recrystallized Si films on 2-inch-diameter Si wafers. Dualgate Mosfets with a three-dimensional structure have been fabricated by using the zone-melting recrystallization technique.

The use of zone melting recrystallization (ZMR) to prepare large-grain(and in some cases single-crystal) semiconductor films is reviewed, with emphasis on recent work on Si on SiO2. Encapsulants are generally required to minimize contamination and decomposition, induce a crystalline texture, improve surface morphology and prevent agglomeration. In the case of Si, the solid-liquid interface is faceted, which gives rise to subboundaries. These can be entrained by laterally modulating the temperature through the use of an optical absorber on top of the encapsulant. Control of thermal gradients and in-plane crystallographic orientation are important for reliable entrainment.

The crystallite morphology and defect structure of laser-crystallized Ge films have been characterized by transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy. The elongated crystallites present in these films have their long axis in the [001] direction. In regions where these crystallites are well aligned with each other, competitive lateral growth and (110) texture are observed. The defects most frequently found are [111] microtwins. A growth model that accounts for the texture and defects is proposed.

Two techniques have been used to measure the velocity of the amorphous-crystalline boundary during scanned laser crystallization of amorphous Ge films on fused-silica substrates. Values in the vicinity of 200 cm sec-1 have been measured by both methods. The results obtained by the first technique, an optical transmission method, confirm our theoretical model for the periodic motion of the boundary. The measurements made by the second technique, which is based on an examination of the structural features obtained at laser scanning rates up to about 600 cm sec-1 , show the boundary velocity to be rather insensitive to film thickness and background temperature. Controlled crystallization is expected to require stability of the laser beam power.

The president calls attention to the large and increasing membership of Commission 12 and the policy of concentrating in it all matters relating to the sun. The result makes it comparable in breadth of field and in membership to the former Union for Co-operation in Solar Research. The main point in favour of this policy is the increased interest in the meetings of the Commission and the larger number of individuals reached compared with the meetings of small committees. One recalls the general sessions of the Solar Union in which each one present felt himself a part of the Union and in real touch with the work of different sections and after the discussions went away with fuller knowledge of what it was all about. This was a valuable result not attained to the same degree from the general sessions of the present Union, but in a measure it does follow from the meetings of the Solar Physics Committee. On the other hand the question may be raised whether or not the merging of independent commissions into subdivisions of a large commission lessens their interest to an extent not balanced by the advantages. If the present policy holds, it seems to the president that a re-organisation of Commission 12 is advisable by which more responsibility is laid upon the directors of centres. The basis of membership in the Commission may well be considered and recommendations formulated for transmission to the Executive Committee.
