This paper describes a computational investigation of multimode instability growth and multimaterial mixing induced by multiple shock waves in a high-energy-density (HED) environment, where pressures exceed 1 Mbar. The simulations are based on a series of experiments performed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and designed as an HED analogue of non-HED shock-tube studies of the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability and turbulent mixing. A three-dimensional computational modelling framework is presented. It treats many complications absent from canonical non-HED shock-tube flows, including distinct ion and free-electron internal energies, non-ideal equations of state, radiation transport and plasma-state mass diffusivities, viscosities and thermal conductivities. The simulations are tuned to the available NIF data, and traditional statistical quantities of turbulence are analysed. Integrated measures of turbulent kinetic energy and enstrophy both increase by over an order of magnitude due to reshock. Large contributions to enstrophy production during reshock are seen from both the baroclinic source and enstrophy–dilatation terms, highlighting the significance of fluid compressibility in the HED regime. Dimensional analysis reveals that Reynolds numbers and diffusive Péclet numbers in the HED flow are similar to those in a canonical non-HED analogue, but conductive Péclet numbers are much smaller in the HED flow due to efficient thermal conduction by free electrons. It is shown that the mechanism of electron thermal conduction significantly softens local spanwise gradients of both temperature and density, which causes a minor but non-negligible decrease in enstrophy production and small-scale mixing relative to a flow without this mechanism.

The aims of this study were to determine the total body phylloquinone and its metabolic turnover in human subjects using a tracer dose of [5-H3]phylloquinone containing 55·5×104 MBq/mmol. Seven subjects aged 22 to 49 years were given 0·3 μg isotopic phylloquinone intravenously on a control diet (75 μg phylloquinone/d) and blood, urine and faeces were sampled periodically for 6 d. Five of these subjects were studied a second time after 3–8 weeks on a low-vitamin K diet (8 μg/d). The changes in the radioactivity of plasma phylloquinone with time were analysed by the method of residuals and fitted to a curve composed of two exponential components. The size of the exchangeable body pool was calculated by isotope dilution. Plasma phylloquinone levels fell during vitamin K restriction but the vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors did not change. After injection the first exponential decay curve t1/2 was 1·0 (SD 0·47) H IN THE SUBJECTS ON THE CONTROL DIET AND 0·49 (sd 0·27) h after vitamin K restriction. On the control diet, the second exponential t1/2 was 27·6 (sd 124) h that did not change on the low-vitamin K diet (t1/2=25·1 (sd 13·5) h). These results indicate that the turnover time for phylloquinone in human subjects is about 1·5 d. Urinary excretion of 3H-metabolites ranged from 30 % of the administered dose on the control diet to 38 % on the restricted diet and had the same turnover rate as the second component of the plasma decay curves. The exchangeable body pool of phylloquinone declined from about 1·0 μg/kg before restriction to lower values after vitamin K restriction. The faecal excretion of phylloquinone and its metabolites fell from 32 % of the administered dose on the control diet to 13 % on the restricted diet.

In the February 2001 issue of the Journal of Zoology a paper was published by Robert Timm and John Brandt (2001) that provided a new identification for two bovid frontlets held in the Kansas Natural History Museum. The frontlets had been collected in 1929 from Suoi Kiet, Binh Tuy Province in Vietnam and had been previously identified as kouprey Bos sauveli. Timm and Brandt re-identified the two frontlets as adult male and female representatives of the recently described spiral-horned ox Pseudonovibos spiralis Peter & Feiler, 1994.

Summary
Introduction
Urinary tract infections (UTI) of the lower urinary tract are a common problem causing significant morbidity in females and males (Nickel 1990). Most of the causal organisms are Gram negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis, or Gram positive Enterococcus and Streptococcus spp., which have their reservoir in the gastrointestinal tract. The other major source of UTI pathogens is direct transmission through sexual activity. These organisms first colonize the introitus and the periurethral area before entering the bladder or prostate. There is an indigenous population of Gram positive, acid producing lactobacilli in this environment which under normal circumstances appears to enhance the urinary defence mechanisms and inhibit the successful progression of the enterics into the urethra and bladder (Chan et al. 1985; Reid et al. 1987, 1990a). When the balance between enteric uropathogens and host defences is upset, uropathogens are able to ascend through the urethra into the bladder, the prostate (in males) and less often into the kidneys where they colonize and cause infection. Usually only the bladder is infected giving rise to simple, uncomplicated acute cystitis. This condition is readily treated by several standard antibiotic regimes (Nickel 1990). Problems arise when this infection spreads from the bladder into other organs such as the kidneys (pyelonephritis) or prostate (prostatitis), or induces the formation of calculi (struvite urolithiasis: McLean et al. 1988, 1992). In these cases, significant tissue damage may occur, possibly causing permanent damage to renal function, which can be life threatening.
