To determine whether poorer performance on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in individuals with transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 pathology (TDP-43+) is due to greater loss of word knowledge compared to retrieval-based deficits.
Methods:
Retrospective clinical-pathologic study of 282 participants with Alzheimer’s disease neuropathologic changes (ADNC) and known TDP-43 status. We evaluated item-level performance on the 60-item BNT for first and last available assessment. We fit cross-sectional negative binomial count models that assessed total number of incorrect items, number correct of responses with phonemic cue (reflecting retrieval difficulties), and number of “I don’t know” (IDK) responses (suggestive of loss of word knowledge) at both assessments. Models included TDP-43 status and adjusted for sex, age, education, years from test to death, and ADNC severity. Models that evaluated the last assessment adjusted for number of prior BNT exposures.
Results:
43% were TDP-43+. The TDP-43+ group had worse performance on BNT total score at first (p = .01) and last assessments (p = .01). At first assessment, TDP-43+ individuals had an estimated 29% (CI: 7%–56%) higher mean number of incorrect items after adjusting for covariates, and a 51% (CI: 15%–98%) higher number of IDK responses compared to TDP-43−. At last assessment, compared to TDP-43−, the TDP-43+ group on average missed 31% (CI: 6%–62%; p = .01) more items and had 33% more IDK responses (CI: 1% fewer to 78% more; p = .06).
Conclusions:
An important component of poorer performance on the BNT in participants who are TDP-43+ is having loss of word knowledge versus retrieval difficulties.
Treatment of childhood central nervous system (CNS) tumors can lead to sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), with prior research indicating associations between SNHL and cognitive difficulties. Infants (0-3 years) treated for CNS tumors are at particular risk for neurocognitive deficits due to increased vulnerability of the developing brain and missed developmental opportunities secondary to prolonged treatment. This study expands upon existing research by examining the association between treatment-related SNHL and later neurocognitive outcomes among infants.
Participants and Methods:
Serial audiology and neurocognitive assessments were conducted as part of a prospective, multisite, longitudinal trial (SJYC07). Children with newly diagnosed CNS tumors were treated with chemotherapy, with or without focal proton or photon radiation therapy (RT). SNHL was dichotomized based on hearing in the better ear as present versus not present (Chang grade ≥1a vs. <1a). Neurocognitive assessments included intellectual functioning (IQ), and parent ratings of executive functioning and behavioral functioning. Demographic and clinical variables investigated included: sex, age at diagnosis (years), treatment type (chemotherapy only vs. chemotherapy + RT), risk group (low vs. intermediate vs. high), and socioeconomic status (SES, continuous). Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with SNHL. Change point longitudinal models were used to examine the effect of each covariate individually and the potential impact of SNHL on trajectories of neurocognitive outcomes.
Results:
Of 135 patients (median age at diagnosis= 1.5 years), 67% had mild-to-severe SNHL as defined by Chang grade ≥1a at last follow-up. SNHL occurred early after treatment with a 1-year cumulative incidence 63.0% ±4.3%. SNHL was associated with age at diagnosis (p <.001) but not sex, treatment exposure or study risk arm (p >.10). At pretreatment baseline, IQ was associated with age at diagnosis (older age= higher IQ) and SES (higher SES= higher IQ) with a change in the trajectory of IQ after SNHL (stable prior to SNHL and declined 1.46 points/year after SNHL), which was impacted by tumor location (patients with supratentorial tumors stable prior to SNHL and declined 2.84 points/year after SNHL; whereas, patients with infratentorial tumors increased 1.93 points/year prior to SNHL and were stable after SNHL). At pre-treatment baseline, adaptive functioning was associated with age at diagnosis (older age= higher skills) with a change in adaptive functioning after SNHL that varied by age. There was a change in trajectory of attention problems (stable before SNHL and worsening 1.39 points/year after SNHL). SNHL was not associated with parent report of emerging executive functioning.
Conclusions:
Children with brain tumors experience SNHL and cognitive difficulties early in treatment that can worsen over time. Younger age at diagnosis is associated with greater risk for SNHL and cognitive difficulties. Analyses of the time course between the emergence of SNHL and cognitive late effects suggests even mild SNHL is associated with a clinically signficant decline in IQ and attention problems. These findings have notable implications with respect to refining monitoring guidelines, informing modifications to treatment, advocating for interventions, and helping educate parents, teachers, and providers about the significant impact of mild SNHL.
Sixty-five years ago, Teal’s (1962) study showed that salt marsh primary production was greater than community respiration. To explain this result, he suggested that marshes exported excess organic matter either directly as organic matter, or as organisms, to coastal waters. This concept, that marshes were “outwelling” material to the adjacent estuary and coastal oceans, was soon expanded to nutrients as well. However, the actual importance of the marsh in supplying organic matter and nutrients to adjacent coastal systems has been controversial and reviews debating the importance of outwelling from marshes have regularly appeared over the decades (Nixon 1980, Childers et al. 2000, Odum 2000, Valiela et al. 2000, Boynton and Nixon 2013). It has also been argued that in some cases the coastal ocean can act as a source of nutrients to the marsh and estuary (“inwelling”).
In April 2019, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) released its recovery plan for the jaguar Panthera onca after several decades of discussion, litigation and controversy about the status of the species in the USA. The USFWS estimated that potential habitat, south of the Interstate-10 highway in Arizona and New Mexico, had a carrying capacity of c. six jaguars, and so focused its recovery programme on areas south of the USA–Mexico border. Here we present a systematic review of the modelling and assessment efforts over the last 25 years, with a focus on areas north of Interstate-10 in Arizona and New Mexico, outside the recovery unit considered by the USFWS. Despite differences in data inputs, methods, and analytical extent, the nine previous studies found support for potential suitable jaguar habitat in the central mountain ranges of Arizona and New Mexico. Applying slightly modified versions of the USFWS model and recalculating an Arizona-focused model over both states provided additional confirmation. Extending the area of consideration also substantially raised the carrying capacity of habitats in Arizona and New Mexico, from six to 90 or 151 adult jaguars, using the modified USFWS models. This review demonstrates the crucial ways in which choosing the extent of analysis influences the conclusions of a conservation plan. More importantly, it opens a new opportunity for jaguar conservation in North America that could help address threats from habitat losses, climate change and border infrastructure.
We assess Mercury’s geologic history, focusing on the distribution and origin of terrain types and an overview of Mercury’s evolution from the pre-Tolstojan through the Kuiperian Period. We review evidence for the nature of Mercury’s early crust, including the possibility that a substantial portion formed by the global eruption of lavas generated by partial melting during and after overturn of the crystalline products of magma ocean cooling, whereas a much smaller fraction of the crust may have been derived from crystal flotation in such a magma ocean. The early history of Mercury may thus have been similar to that of the other terrestrial planets, with much of the crust formed through volcanism, in contrast to the flotation-dominated crust of the Moon. Small portions of Mercury’s early crust may still be exposed in a heavily modified and brecciated form; the majority of the surface is dominated by intercrater plains (Pre-Tolstojan and Tolstojan in age) and smooth plains (Tolstojan and Calorian) that formed through a combination of volcanism and impact events. As effusive volcanism waned in the Calorian, explosive volcanism continued at least through the Mansurian Period; the Kuiperian Period was dominated by impact events and the formation of hollows.
The net mass budget is estimated for the western part of the Ross Ice Shelf drainage system. The area of the system is (1.75±0.26) × 106 km.2, and the drainage periphery extends along the eastern flank of the Trans-Antarctic Mountains between lat. 77° 58′ S., long. 164° 37′ E. and lat. 85° 27′ S., long. 147°50′ discharge is estimated from vertical cross-sections and corresponding ice-movement data for eight outlet glaciers. Free-air gravity anomalies, corrected for the effect of terrain above the glacier surface, are used to determine cross-sections of valleys by comparison with theoretical gravity profiles for several two-dimensional valley models. These data provide a basis for estimating the rate of ice discharge from the plateau, which is compared with the estimated rate of net accumulation at the surface, to determine the net budget of the ice sheet in the region. Representative mean rates of ice discharge measured in different types of glaciers are approximately 0.25 × 1015 g. km.−1 yr.−1 in outlet glaciers with large basins, and 0.05 × 1015 g. km.−1 yr.−1 in outlet glaciers with small basins. Taking into account the snowshcd area and the rate of accumulation, the rate of ice discharge in cirque and piedmont glaciers is estimated at about 0.02 × 1015 g. km.−1 yr.−1 The difference ((48±29) × 1015 g. yr.−1) between mass input ((96±25) × 1015 g. yr.−1) and mass output ((48±15) × 1015 g. yr.−1) is large enough relative to the estimated standard error to indicate a probable positive net budget.
We present an overview of the survey for radio emission from active stars that has been in progress for the last six years using the observatories at Fleurs, Molonglo, Parkes and Tidbinbilla. The role of complementary optical observations at the Anglo-Australian Observatory, Mount Burnett, Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories and Mount Tamborine are also outlined. We describe the different types of star that have been included in our survey and discuss some of the problems in making the radio observations.
We examine the roles of actuaries in UK life offices, along with trends, challenges to and opportunities for actuaries. We carry out an analysis of senior roles in life offices, a questionnaire survey and interviews with relevant senior personnel. We find that actuaries occupy many important roles in life offices and are regarded as having good industry knowledge and technical skills, especially in financial modelling. There are fewer executive directors and more non-executive directors of life offices who are actuaries compared with the position in 1990. A higher proportion of reserved roles is outsourced to consultants than was the case in 1990. Only a small number of Actuarial Function Holders are directors. Actuaries are more siloed than was the case in the past, although actuaries are well represented in the finance and risk functions of many offices. Although actuarial work in connection with the preparation for Solvency II will decline, there will be important ongoing requirements for actuaries following Solvency II implementation. We also see opportunities for actuaries in four areas: in risk management, in financial analysis and management based on Solvency II and international financial reporting standards, in connection with “big data”, and in product development and the customer proposition. There are implications for the examination syllabus, continuing professional development and research.
The purpose of this study was to describe the longitudinal trajectories and bidirectional relationships of the physical-social and emotional functioning (EF) dimensions of positive aging and to identify their baseline characteristics.
Methods:
Women age 65 and older who enrolled in one or more Women's Health Initiative clinical trials (WHI CTs) and who had positive aging indicators measured at baseline and years 1, 3, 6, and 9 were included in these analyses (N = 2281). Analytic strategies included latent class growth modeling to identify longitudinal trajectories and multinomial logistic regression to examine the effects of baseline predictors on these trajectories.
Results:
A five-trajectory model was chosen to best represent the data. For Physical-Social Functioning (PSF), trajectory groups included Low Maintainer (8.3%), Mid-Low Improver (10.4%), Medium Decliner (10.7%), Mid-High Maintainer (31.2%), and High Maintainer (39.4%); for EF, trajectories included Low Maintainer (3%), Mid-Low Improver (9%), Medium Decliner (7.7%), Mid-High Maintainer (22.8%), and High Maintainer (57.5%). Cross-classification of the groups of trajectories demonstrated that the impact of a high and stable EF on PSF might be greater than the reverse. Low depression symptoms, low pain, and high social support were the most consistent predictors of high EF trajectories.
Conclusion:
Aging women are heterogeneous in terms of positive aging indicators for up to 9 years of follow-up. Interventions aimed at promoting sustainable EF might have diffused effects on other domains of healthy aging.

Further topics addressed include humanism, women translators, and the role of censorship and the continuity of Catholic publishing from that time.
