Difficulties in executive functions (EFs) and internalizing and externalizing problems are prospectively related. However, it remains unclear whether the bidirectional relations between specific EF components and internalizing and externalizing problems at the within-person level vary across developmental stages in childhood and early adolescence.
Methods
This study utilized data from seven waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010–2011 (ECLS-K: 2011), following a nationally representative sample of 15,055 children (mean age at baseline = 5.63 years, SD = 0.37; age range = 4.02–7.83) from kindergarten through fifth grade. Internalizing and externalizing problems and inhibitory control were assessed using teacher-reported measures, while working memory and cognitive flexibility were evaluated using standardized cognitive tasks. Data were analyzed using a random intercept cross-lagged panel model, adjusting for the complex sampling design.
Results
Working memory negatively predicted internalizing problems from kindergarten to first grade, with no significant link to externalizing problems. Cognitive flexibility showed limited effects, with only spring kindergarten externalizing problems predicting lower cognitive flexibility in first grade. Inhibitory control negatively predicted internalizing problems in early childhood, while internalizing problems positively predicted inhibitory control during the kindergarten-to-first-grade transition. Externalizing problems consistently reduced inhibitory control over time. Notably, inhibitory control negatively predicted externalizing problems until third grade but positively predicted them from third to fourth grade.
Conclusions
The findings suggest that while certain EFs can protect against internalizing and externalizing problems in early childhood, these symptoms may also influence EF development, with these interactions evolving as children transition into adolescence.
Although many studies have demonstrated associations between peer victimization and internalizing and externalizing problems that may be moderated by genes, it remains unclear whether these links also apply to the within-person level. The present study investigated within-person associations between peer victimization and internalizing and externalizing problems, as well as the moderating effect of between-person differences in the FKBP5 gene. A total of 915 Chinese youth (43.9% girls; Mage = 10.34 years, SD = 0.94) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with six-month intervals. A random intercept cross-lagged panel model was used to test the hypothesized moderation effects, enabling the examination of time-invariant moderators and the between × within interaction. Results revealed that peer victimization was bidirectionally associated with internalizing and externalizing problems at the within-person level. The FKBP5 gene moderated the within-person pathways from peer victimization to both internalizing and externalizing problems. These findings suggest that individuals with greater genetic susceptibility were more likely to develop internalizing and externalizing symptoms in response to peer victimization. These results highlight gene-environment interactions at the within-person level and underscore the importance of tailored interventions aimed at preventing internalizing and externalizing problems in adolescents.
The laboratory generation and diagnosis of uniform near-critical-density (NCD) plasmas play critical roles in various studies and applications, such as fusion science, high energy density physics, astrophysics as well as relativistic electron beam generation. Here we successfully generated the quasistatic NCD plasma sample by heating a low-density tri-cellulose acetate (TCA) foam with the high-power-laser-driven hohlraum radiation. The temperature of the hohlraum is determined to be 20 eV by analyzing the spectra obtained with the transmission grating spectrometer. The single-order diffraction grating was employed to eliminate the high-order disturbance. The temperature of the heated foam is determined to be T = 16.8 ± 1.1 eV by analyzing the high-resolution spectra obtained with a flat-field grating spectrometer. The electron density of the heated foam is about under the reasonable assumption of constant mass density.
Existing literature has highlighted the importance of recognizing health fraud offenders’ intentional manipulations of victims’ vulnerabilities. However, the manipulation tactics of health fraud have received little attention. This study aims to extend the current understanding of health fraud by incorporating the concept of emotional labour. Nested in the Chinese context, which owns the most populous ageing population, three sets of qualitative data were collected, including 13 semi-structured interviews, 233 judicial documents, and 197 media reports. The findings suggest that health fraud offenders utilized three types of emotional labour as means of committing crime: including the labour of anxiety relief, the labour of filial piety, and the labour of social networking. This article not only provides novel insights into understanding health fraud, but also contributes to introducing the concept of emotional labour in criminological and socio-legal studies.
Family dysfunction plays an important role in cyberbullying and cybervictimization. However, little research has investigated the longitudinal relations and the mediating mechanisms between them during adolescence. This study examined the longitudinal relations between family dysfunction and cyberbullying and cybervictimization, along with whether depressive symptoms function as mediators between them at the within-person level. A total of 3,743 Chinese adolescents (46.2% females; Mage = 9.92 years; SD = 0.51) participated a five-wave longitudinal study with a 6-month time interval. The results of random intercept cross-lagged panel model found that: (1) family dysfunction directly predicted depressive symptoms and vice versa at the within-person level; (2) depressive symptoms directly predicted cyberbullying and cybervictimization at the within-person level, but not vice versa; (3) family dysfunction indirectly predicted cyberbullying and cybervictimization via depressive symptoms at the within-person level; (4) at the between-person level, there were significant associations among family dysfunction, depressive symptoms, cyberbullying and cybervictimization. The results are discussed on the basis of the mechanisms that lead to cyberbullying and cybervictimization.
Since 2018, the radiocarbon laboratory of Lanzhou University has been equipped with a compact accelerator mass spectrometer—a 200-KV mini carbon dating system (MICADAS), together with an auto graphitization equipment (AGE III). The laboratory has for a long time prepared graphite targets for 14C dating of plant fossils, charcoal, bones, and bulk organic matter. Herein, we give an overview of the operating status and performance of the dating facility. The long-term measurements of the standard and blank samples indicated that the results for MICADAS in Lanzhou University were accurate and stable and of high sensitivity. Fifteen sets of organic materials collected from archaeological sites in northwest China were selected for an inter-comparison study involving the participation of four specialist laboratories. The 14C dating results for the homogenized archaeological samples from several of the laboratories showed a high degree of consensus. The long-term performance and inter-comparison data for MICADAS confirmed that the radiocarbon laboratory of Lanzhou University could provide stable and accurate 14C dating results. In this context, the 14C dating results for a number of key archaeological/environmental samples were validated.
Parenting practices and relationships with peers are crucial aspects of youth socialization. Although theoretically expected reciprocal associations between changes in maladaptive parenting and adolescent peer victimization exist, there is a lack of studies that examine this link and address the mediating mechanisms at the within-person level. This longitudinal study examined reciprocal relations between peer victimization and two types of maladaptive parenting including harsh punishment and psychological control, and the potential mediating roles of internalizing and externalizing problems within these relations, by disentangling between- and within-person effects. A total of 4,731 Chinese early adolescents (44.9% girls; Mage = 10.91 years, SD = 0.72) participated in a four-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. The results of random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling showed: (a) harsh punishment did not directly predict peer victimization, and vice versa; (b) psychological control directly predicted peer victimization, and vice versa; (c) psychological control indirectly predicted peer victimization via internalizing problems, and peer victimization also indirectly predicted psychological control via internalizing problems. These findings provide evidence of a bidirectional spillover effect between psychological control and peer victimization at the within-person level, suggesting Chinese early adolescents may become caught in a vicious cycle directly or indirectly via their internalizing problems.
In December 2019, the first confirmed case of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus was reported. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is currently spreading around the world. The relationships among the pandemic and its associated travel restrictions, social distancing measures, contact tracing, mask-wearing habits and medical consultation efficiency have not yet been extensively assessed. Based on the epidemic data reported by the Health Commission of Wenzhou, we analysed the developmental characteristics of the epidemic and modified the Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed (SEIR) model in three discrete ways. (1) According to the implemented preventive measures, the epidemic was divided into three stages: initial, outbreak and controlled. (2) We added many factors, such as health protections, travel restrictions and social distancing, close-contact tracing and the time from symptom onset to hospitalisation (TSOH), to the model. (3) Exposed and infected people were subdivided into isolated and free-moving populations. For the parameter estimation of the model, the average TSOH and daily cured cases, deaths and imported cases can be obtained through individual data from epidemiological investigations. The changes in daily contacts are simulated using the intracity travel intensity (ICTI) from the Baidu Migration Big Data platform. The optimal values of the remaining parameters are calculated by the grid search method. With this model, we calculated the sensitivity of the control measures with regard to the prevention of the spread of the epidemic by simulating the number of infected people in various hypothetical situations. Simultaneously, through a simulation of a second epidemic, the challenges from the rebound of the epidemic were analysed, and prevention and control recommendations were made. The results show that the modified SEIR model can effectively simulate the spread of COVID-19 in Wenzhou. The policy of the lockdown of Wuhan, the launch of the first-level Public Health Emergency Preparedness measures on 23 January 2020 and the implementation of resident travel control measures on 31 January 2020 were crucial to COVID-19 control.
In order to maintain the no-slip condition and the divergence-free property simultaneously, an iterative scheme of immersed boundary method in the finite element framework is presented. In this method, the Characteristic-based Split scheme is employed to solve the momentum equations and the formulation for the pressure and the extra body force is derived according to the no-slip condition. The extra body force is divided into two divisions, one is in relation to the pressure and the other is irrelevant. Two corresponding independent iterations are set to solve the two sections. The novelty of this method lies in that the correction of the velocity increment is included in the calculation of the extra body force which is relevant to the pressure and the update of the force is incorporated into the iteration of the pressure. Hence, the divergence-free properties and no-slip conditions are ensured concurrently. In addition, the current method is validated with well-known benchmarks.
Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) provides an integrity service for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). The conventional RAIM algorithm is based on the assumption of a single fault and typically uses the forward-backward method, which is based on the w-test or correlation analysis methods, to exclude the faults. It is suitable for single fault detection and exclusion, while it can lead to inefficiency, can be misleading and can even fail in the exclusion of multiple faults. To solve this problem, an improved method based on consensus voting of the w-test and correlation analysis methods is presented. To verify the performance of the improved method, tests using Global Positioning System (GPS)/BeiDou System (BDS) data have been carried out in comparison with the conventional methods in terms of false and correct faults exclusion rate and computational complexity in the case of a different number of faults. Results show that the improved method has almost the same correct exclusion rate compared to the conventional RAIM in the case of a single fault. It is worth noting that the improved method has a higher correct exclusion probability and computational efficiency as well as a lower possibility of false exclusion in the case of multiple faults.
The prevalence and factors associated with delays in help seeking for people with dementia in China are unknown.
Methods:
Within 1,010 consecutively registered participants in the Clinical Pathway for Alzheimer's Disease in China (CPAD) study (NCT01779310), 576 persons with dementia (PWDs) and their informants reported the estimated time from symptom onset to first medical visit seeking diagnosis. Univariate analysis of general linear model was used to examine the potential factors associated with the delayed diagnosis seeking.
Results:
The median duration from the first noticeable symptom to the first visit seeking diagnosis or treatment was 1.77 years. Individuals with a positive family history of dementia had longer duration (p = 0.05). Compared with other types of dementia, people with vascular dementia (VaD) were referred for diagnosis earliest, and the sequence for such delays was: VaD < Alzheimer's disease (AD) < frontotemporal dementia (FTD) (p < 0.001). Subtypes of dementia (p < 0.001), family history (p = 0.01), and education level (p = 0.03) were associated with the increased delay in help seeking.
Conclusions:
In China, seeking diagnosis for PWDs is delayed for approximately 2 years, even in well-established memory clinics. Clinical features, family history, and less education may impede help seeking in dementia care.
Tetradecyl 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate, termed ABG001, has been reported to enhance neurite outgrowth of PC12 cells. Herein, we report that oral administration of ABG001 for five days to adult male mice could dose-dependently enhance survival and neurite growth of newborn cells in hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) without changes in cell proliferation and differentiation of progenitor cells. The ABG001 administration (0.5 mg/kg) enhanced the phosphorylation of tyrosine kinase A (TrkA) receptor, which induced increases in the levels of ERK, Akt and mTOR phosphorylation in hippocampus. The pro-neurogenesis of ABG001 was blocked by the TrkA receptor inhibitor K252a. By contrast, the ERK inhibitor U0126 attenuated only the ABG001-increased number of newborn cells, while the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 prevented mainly the ABG001-enhanced neurite growth. In comparison with control mice, the mice treated with ABG001 showed a more preferential spatial cognitive function as assessed by Morris water maze and Y maze tests, which was sensitive to the blockade of TrkA receptor. In addition, a single injection (i.c.v.) of ‘aggregated’ Aβ25–35 in adult male mice (Aβ25–35-mice) impaired spatial memory, survival and neurite growth of newborn cells in the DG with reduced phosphorylation of Akt and mTOR. The treatment of Aβ25–35-mice with ABG001 could protect the survival and neurite growth of newborn cells through increasing TrkA receptor-induced phosphorylation of Akt and mTOR, which was accompanied by the improvement of spatial cognitive performance.
Based on the samples collected in Chinese scientific surveys off the Costa Rica Dome from July to August in 2009, statolith microstructure of the jumbo flying squid, Dosidicus gigas, was analysed for studying their age, growth and population structure. Three typical growth zones (postnuclear, dark and peripheral zones), abnormal increments (checks) and aberrant microstructure (additional centre and additional rings) were found in the statoliths examined. Squid sizes ranged from 205 to 429 mm dorsal mantle length (ML) with ages no more than 10 months for females and 8 months for males. Back-calculated hatching dates were from November 2008 to April 2009. Growth in ML was best described by a linear function for both the sexes, while growth in body weight was best quantified by an exponential function for females and a power curve for males. The maximum absolute daily growth rates and instantaneous growth rate in ML were reached during 181–210 and 151–180 days for females and males, respectively. The Costa Rica Dome and its adjacent waters were considered as a potential spawning ground because of presence of not only high proportion of mature squid but also rhynchoteuthion paralarvae, and high primary productivity from the strong upwelling. This study suggests that D. gigas have complicated intra-specific population structure and large spatial variability in the key life history parameters.
Solidification of FeSi2 alloy by single-roller rapid solidification technology was studied, and monophase α–FeSi2 ribbons were obtained. Phase evolution of the monophase and metastable α–FeSi2 ribbons during subsequent annealing was studied with in situ electric resistance measurements. The results show that the metastable α–FeSi2 phase transforms into the β–FeSi2 phase at about 620 °C and then transforms into the α–FeSi2 phase again at a higher temperature when heated. A new relatively simple method to prepare bulk β–FeSi2 alloy, that is, formation of bulk β–FeSi2 alloy by annealing monophase α–FeSi2 alloy, is presented.
In this paper, the influence of the matrix-aggregate bond on the strength and brittleness of concrete is studied. Six different matrixaggregate interfaces are used to evaluate the interfacial bond capability. The results obtained on the strength and brittleness index of concrete show that strengthening and toughening of concrete can be obtained simultaneously, if the interfacial bonds are changes so that they conform to a rational distribution according to aggregate size. These results are discussed in terms of the energy dissipation and crack propagation during failure of concrete.
