The incompressibility constraint for fluid flow was imposed by Lagrange in the so-called Lagrangian variable description using his method of multipliers in the Lagrangian (variational) formulation. An alternative is the imposition of incompressibility in the Eulerian variable description by a generalization of Dirac’s constraint method using noncanonical Poisson brackets. Here it is shown how to impose the incompressibility constraint using Dirac’s method in terms of both the canonical Poisson brackets in the Lagrangian variable description and the noncanonical Poisson brackets in the Eulerian description, allowing for the advection of density. Both cases give the dynamics of infinite-dimensional geodesic flow on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms and explicit expressions for this dynamics in terms of the constraints and original variables is given. Because Lagrangian and Eulerian conservation laws are not identical, comparison of the various methods is made.

General equations for conservative yet dissipative (entropy producing) extended magnetohydrodynamics are derived from two-fluid theory. Keeping all terms generates unusual cross-effects, such as thermophoresis and a current viscosity that mixes with the usual velocity viscosity. While the Poisson bracket of the ideal version of this model has already been discovered, we determine its metriplectic counterpart that describes the dissipation. This is done using a new and general thermodynamic point of view to derive dissipative brackets, a means of derivation that is natural for understanding and creating dissipative dynamics without appealing to underlying kinetic theory orderings. Finally, the formalism is used to study dissipation in the Lagrangian variable picture where, in the context of extended magnetohydrodynamics, non-local dissipative brackets naturally emerge.

In recent years, several gauge-symmetric particle-in-cell (PIC) methods have been developed whose simulations of particles and electromagnetic fields exactly conserve charge. While it is rightly observed that these methods’ gauge symmetry gives rise to their charge conservation, this causal relationship has generally been asserted via ad hoc derivations of the associated conservation laws. In this work, we develop a comprehensive theoretical grounding for charge conservation in gauge-symmetric Lagrangian and Hamiltonian PIC algorithms. For Lagrangian variational PIC methods, we apply Noether’s second theorem to demonstrate that gauge symmetry gives rise to a local charge conservation law as an off-shell identity. For Hamiltonian splitting methods, we show that the momentum map establishes their charge conservation laws. We define a new class of algorithms – gauge-compatible splitting methods – that exactly preserve the momentum map associated with a Hamiltonian system’s gauge symmetry – even after time discretization. This class of algorithms affords splitting schemes a decided advantage over alternative Hamiltonian integrators. We apply this general technique to design a novel, explicit, symplectic, gauge-compatible splitting PIC method, whose momentum map yields an exact local charge conservation law. Our study clarifies the appropriate initial conditions for such schemes and examines their symplectic reduction.

In this semi-analytic study we develop a mathematical model for determining the electromagnetic field due to a current-driven antenna immersed in a cold, magnetized plasma, valid for frequencies below the electron plasma frequency. At each point in the plasma, it is shown that the vacuum electric field of the antenna couples to the plasma conductivity tensor and acts as an infinitesimal source term to drive plasma currents – the total field is then found from the aggregate sum of these point sources, expressed as an integral across the vacuum field. A general solution is provided for both azimuthally symmetric cylindrical coordinates as well as a fully generalized Cartesian solution. As an example of how this general solution may be applied, we solve for the field due to an electric dipole antenna of length $\ell$ , aligned along the background field, at frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency. It is found that the near field decays exponentially with increasing $k_{\bot }z$ , whereas the far field exhibits wave-like behaviour. The radiation zone exhibits propagation cones emanating from either end of the dipole, with a propagation angle that is consistent with past analytic studies of inertial Alfvén waves. The mathematical model presented here may be advantageous over other numerical methods, as it allows the user to solve parts of the problems analytically, thereby cutting down significantly on computation time, as well as offering physical insight into the system that may not be evident with other numerical solvers.

A Hamiltonian six-field gyrofluid model is constructed, based on closure relations derived from the so-called ‘quasi-static’ gyrokinetic linear theory where the fields are assumed to propagate with a parallel phase velocity much smaller than the parallel particle thermal velocities. The main properties captured by this model, primarily aimed at exploring fundamental problems of interest for space plasmas such as the solar wind, are its ability to provide a reasonable agreement with kinetic theory for linear low-frequency modes, and at the same time to ensure a Hamiltonian structure in the absence of explicit dissipation. The model accounts for equilibrium temperature anisotropy, ion and electron finite Larmor radius corrections, electron inertia, magnetic fluctuations along the direction of a strong guide field and parallel Landau damping, introduced through a Landau-fluid modelling of the parallel heat transfers for both gyrocentre species. Remarkably, the quasi-static closure leads to exact and simple expressions for the nonlinear terms involving gyroaveraged electromagnetic fields and potentials. One of the consequences is that a rather natural identification of the Hamiltonian structure of the model becomes possible when Landau damping is neglected. A slight variant of the model consists of a four-field Hamiltonian reduction of the original six-field model, which is also used for the subsequent linear analysis. In the latter, the dispersion relations of kinetic Alfvén waves and the firehose instability are shown to be correctly reproduced, relatively far in the sub-ion range (depending on the plasma parameters), while the spectral range where the slow-wave dispersion relation and the field-swelling instabilities are precisely described is less extended. This loss of accuracy originates from the breaking of the condition of small phase velocity, relative to the parallel thermal velocity of the electrons (for kinetic Alfvén waves and firehose instability) or of the ions (in the case of the field-swelling instabilities).

A Hamiltonian and action principle formalism for deriving three-dimensional gyroviscous magnetohydrodynamic models is presented. The uniqueness of the approach in constructing the gyroviscous tensor from first principles and its ability to explain the origin of the gyromap and the gyroviscous terms are highlighted. The procedure allows for the specification of free functions, which can be used to generate a wide range of gyroviscous models. Through the process of reduction, the noncanonical Hamiltonian bracket is obtained and briefly analysed.

While it is well known that every nearly periodic Hamiltonian system possesses an adiabatic invariant, extant methods for computing terms in the adiabatic invariant series are inefficient. The most popular method involves the heavy intermediate calculation of a non-unique near-identity coordinate transformation, even though the adiabatic invariant itself is a uniquely defined scalar. A less well-known method, developed by S. Omohundro, avoids calculating intermediate sequences of coordinate transformations but is also inefficient as it involves its own sequence of complex intermediate calculations. In order to improve the efficiency of future calculations of adiabatic invariants, we derive generally applicable, readily computable formulas for the first several terms in the adiabatic invariant series. To demonstrate the utility of these formulas, we apply them to charged-particle dynamics in a strong magnetic field and magnetic field-line dynamics when the field lines are nearly closed.

In this study we consider the Hamiltonian approach for the construction of a map for a system with nonlinear resonant interaction, including phase trapping and phase bunching effects. We derive basic equations for a single resonant trajectory analysis and then generalize them into a map in the energy/pitch-angle space. The main advances of this approach are the possibility of considering effects of many resonances and to simulate the evolution of the resonant particle ensemble on long time ranges. For illustrative purposes we consider the system with resonant relativistic electrons and field-aligned whistler-mode waves. The simulation results show that the electron phase space density within the resonant region is flattened with reduction of gradients. This evolution is much faster than the predictions of quasi-linear theory. We discuss further applications of the proposed approach and possible ways for its generalization.

Recent discoveries have demonstrated that matter can be distinguished on the basis of topological considerations, giving rise to the concept of topological phase. Introduced originally in condensed matter physics, the physics of topological phase can also be fruitfully applied to plasmas. Here, the theory of topological phase is introduced, including a discussion of Berry phase, Berry connection, Berry curvature and Chern number. One of the clear physical manifestations of topological phase is the bulk-boundary correspondence, the existence of localized unidirectional modes at the interface between topologically distinct phases. These concepts are illustrated through examples, including the simple magnetized cold plasma. An outlook is provided for future theoretical developments and possible applications.

We show that non-relativistic scaling of the collisionless Vlasov–Maxwell system implies the existence of a formal invariant slow manifold in the infinite-dimensional Vlasov–Maxwell phase space. Vlasov–Maxwell dynamics restricted to the slow manifold recovers the Vlasov–Poisson and Vlasov–Darwin models as low-order approximations, and provides higher-order corrections to the Vlasov–Darwin model more generally. The slow manifold may be interpreted to all orders in perturbation theory as a collection of formal Vlasov–Maxwell solutions that do not excite light waves, and are therefore ‘dark’. We provide a heuristic lower bound for the time interval over which Vlasov–Maxwell solutions initialized optimally near the slow manifold remain dark. We also show how the dynamics on the slow manifold naturally inherits a Hamiltonian structure from the underlying system. After expressing this structure in a simple form, we use it to identify a manifestly Hamiltonian correction to the Vlasov–Darwin model. The derivation of higher-order terms is reduced to computing the corrections of the system Hamiltonian restricted to the slow manifold.

This paper proposes a metric bracket for representing Coulomb collisions in the so-called guiding-centre Vlasov–Maxwell–Landau model. The bracket is manufactured to preserve the same energy and momentum functionals as does the Vlasov–Maxwell part and to simultaneously satisfy a revised version of the H-theorem, where the equilibrium distributions with respect to collisional dynamics are identified as Maxwellians. This is achieved by exploiting the special projective nature of the Landau collision operator and the simple form of the system's momentum functional. A discussion regarding a possible extension of the results to electromagnetic drift-kinetic and gyrokinetic systems is included. We anticipate that energy conservation and entropy dissipation can always be manufactured whereas guaranteeing momentum conservation is a delicate matter yet to be resolved.

Motivated by recent discussions on the possible role of quantum computation in plasma simulations, here, we present different approaches to Koopman's Hilbert-space formulation of classical mechanics in the context of Vlasov–Maxwell kinetic theory. The celebrated Koopman–von Neumann construction is provided with two different Hamiltonian structures: one is canonical and recovers the usual Clebsch representation of the Vlasov density, the other is non-canonical and appears to overcome certain issues emerging in the canonical formalism. Furthermore, the canonical structure is restored for a variant of the Koopman–von Neumann construction that carries a different phase dynamics. Going back to van Hove's prequantum theory, the corresponding Koopman–van Hove equation provides an alternative Clebsch representation which is then coupled to the electromagnetic fields. Finally, the role of gauge transformations in the new context is discussed in detail.

We construct a structure-preserving finite element method and time-stepping scheme for compressible barotropic magnetohydrodynamics both in the ideal and resistive cases, and in the presence of viscosity. The method is deduced from the geometric variational formulation of the equations. It preserves the balance laws governing the evolution of total energy and magnetic helicity, and preserves mass and the constraint $\text {div}B = 0$ to machine precision, both at the spatially and temporally discrete levels. In particular, conservation of energy and magnetic helicity hold at the discrete levels in the ideal case. It is observed that cross-helicity is well conserved in our simulation in the ideal case.

We present two generalized hybrid kinetic-Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models describing the interaction of a two-fluid bulk plasma, which consists of thermal ions and electrons, with energetic, suprathermal ion populations described by Vlasov dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal components are governed by standard fluid equations in the Hall MHD limit with the electron momentum equation providing an Ohm's law with Hall and electron pressure terms involving a gyrotropic electron pressure tensor. The coupling of the bulk, low-energy plasma with the energetic particle dynamics is accomplished through the current density (current coupling scheme; CCS) and the ion pressure tensor appearing in the momentum equation (pressure coupling scheme; PCS) in the first and the second model, respectively. The CCS is a generalization of two well-known models, because in the limit of vanishing energetic and thermal ion densities, we recover the standard Hall MHD and the hybrid kinetic-ions/fluid-electron model, respectively. This provides us with the capability to study in a continuous manner, the global impact of the energetic particles in a regime extending from vanishing to dominant energetic particle densities. The noncanonical Hamiltonian structures of the CCS and PCS, which can be exploited to study equilibrium and stability properties through the energy-Casimir variational principle, are identified. As a first application here, we derive a generalized Hall MHD Grad–Shafranov–Bernoulli system for translationally symmetric equilibria with anisotropic electron pressure and kinetic effects owing to the presence of energetic particles using the PCS.

An equilibrium statistical mechanics theory for the Hasegawa–Mima equations of toroidal plasmas, with canonical constraint on energy and microcanonical constraint on potential enstrophy, is solved exactly as a spherical model. The use of a canonical energy constraint instead of a fixed-energy microcanonical approach is justified by the preference for viewing real plasmas as an open system. A significant consequence of the results obtained from the partition function, free energy and critical temperature, is the condensation into a ground state exhibiting a blob-hole-like structure observed in real plasmas.

The gap between a recently developed dynamical version of relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (RxMHD) and ideal MHD (IMHD) is bridged by approximating the zero-resistivity ‘ideal’ Ohm's law (IOL) constraint using an augmented Lagrangian method borrowed from optimization theory. The augmentation combines a pointwise vector Lagrange multiplier method and global penalty function method and can be used either for iterative enforcement of the IOL to arbitrary accuracy, or for constructing a continuous sequence of magnetofluid dynamics models running between RxMHD (no IOL) and weak IMHD (IOL almost everywhere). This is illustrated by deriving dispersion relations for linear waves on an MHD equilibrium.

First-order-accurate degenerate variational integration (DVI) was introduced in Ellison et al. (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 25, 2018, 052502) for systems with a degenerate Lagrangian, i.e. one in which the velocity-space Hessian is singular. In this paper we introduce second-order-accurate DVI schemes, both with and without non-uniform time stepping. We show that it is not in general possible to construct a second-order scheme with a preserved two-form by composing a first-order scheme with its adjoint, and discuss the conditions under which such a composition is possible. We build two classes of second-order-accurate DVI schemes. We test these second-order schemes numerically on two systems having non-canonical variables, namely the magnetic field line and guiding centre systems. Variational integration for Hamiltonian systems with non-uniform time steps, in terms of an extended phase space Hamiltonian, is generalized to non-canonical variables. It is shown that preservation of proper degeneracy leads to single-step (one-step) methods without parasitic modes, i.e. to non-uniform time step DVIs. This extension applies to second-order-accurate as well as first-order schemes, and can be applied to adapt the time stepping to an error estimate.

A particle-in-cell algorithm is derived with a canonical Poisson structure in the formalism of finite element exterior calculus. The resulting method belongs to the class of gauge-compatible splitting algorithms, which exactly preserve gauge symmetries and their associated conservation laws via the momentum map. We numerically demonstrate this time invariance of the momentum map and its usefulness in establishing precise initial conditions with a desired initial electric field and fixed background charge. The restriction of this canonical, finite element Poisson structure to the 1X2P $1\frac {1}{2}$-dimensional phase space is also considered and simulated numerically.

The topological Langmuir-cyclotron wave (TLCW) is a recently identified topological surface excitation in magnetized plasmas. We show that TLCW originates from the topological phase transition at the Langmuir wave-cyclotron wave resonance. By isofrequency surface analysis and two- and three-dimensional time-dependent simulations, we demonstrate that the TLCW can propagate robustly along complex phase transition interfaces in a unidirectional manner and without scattering. Because of these desirable features, the TLCW could be explored as an effective mechanism to drive current and flow in magnetized plasmas. The analysis also establishes a close connection between the newly instituted topological phase classification of plasmas and the classical Clemmow-Mullaly-Allis (CMA) diagram of plasma waves.

The ideal Chew–Goldberger–Low (CGL) plasma equations, including the double adiabatic conservation laws for the parallel ($p_\parallel$) and perpendicular pressure ($p_\perp$), are investigated using a Lagrangian variational principle. An Euler–Poincaré variational principle is developed and the non-canonical Poisson bracket is obtained, in which the non-canonical variables consist of the mass flux ${\boldsymbol {M}}$, the density $\rho$, the entropy variable $\sigma =\rho S$ and the magnetic induction ${\boldsymbol {B}}$. Conservation laws of the CGL plasma equations are derived via Noether's theorem. The Galilean group leads to conservation of energy, momentum, centre of mass and angular momentum. Cross-helicity conservation arises from a fluid relabelling symmetry, and is local or non-local depending on whether the gradient of $S$ is perpendicular to ${\boldsymbol {B}}$ or otherwise. The point Lie symmetries of the CGL system are shown to comprise the Galilean transformations and scalings.
