An optimal control for a nonlinear system is considered. The existence of an optimal-control pair, the characterization of the optimal control in terms of the optimal system and the uniqueness of solutions for the control problem are established. The uniqueness requires smallness assumptions on parameters in the functional.

A characterization is given of those unital, 2-subhomogeneous, Fell C*-algebras which have only inner derivations. This proves Sproston and Strauss's conjecture from 1992. Various examples are given of phenomena which cannot occur for separable C*-algebras. In particular, an example is given of a C*-algebra with only inner derivations which has a quotient algebra admitting outer derivations. This answers a question of Akemann, Elliott, Pedersen and Tomiyama from 1976.

Using a combined dominant condition, we obtain general results concerning the complex oscillation for a class of homogeneous linear differential equations w(k) + + … + A1w′ + (A0 + A)w = 0 with k ≥ 2, which has been investigated by many authors. In particular, we discover that there exists a unique case that possesses k linearly independent zero-free solutions for these equations, and we resolve an open problem and simultaneously answer a question of Bank.

We will present an investigation of (ε, δ)-Freudenthal–Kantor supertriple systems that are intimately related to Lie supertriple systems and Lie superalgebras. We can also introduce a super analogue of Nijenhuis tensor and almost-complex structure in differential geometry.

We consider some new types of realization problem for obstructions in the Browder-Livesay groups by homotopy equivalences of closed manifold pairs. We give several examples of calculations. We also consider relations with classical surgery problems.

A pair of coupled nonlinear differential equations is studied and asymptotic properties of its non-oscillatory solutions are obtained. In particular, we provide classification schemes for these solutions which are justified by existence criteria.

If T ∈ L(X) is such that T′ is a scalar-type prespectral operator, then Re T′ and Im T′ are both dual operators. It is shown that that the possession of a functional calculus for the continuous functions on the spectrum of T is equivalent to T′ being scalar-type prespectral of class X, thus answering a question of Berkson and Gillespie.

We consider faithful finitary linear representations of (generalized) wreath products A wrΩH of groups A by H over (potentially) infinite-dimensional vector spaces, having previously considered completely reducible such representations in an earlier paper. The simpler the structure of A the more complex, it seems, these representations can become. If A has no non-trivial abelian normal subgroups, the conditions we present are both necessary and sufficient. They imply, for example, that for such an A, if there exists such a representation of the standard wreath product A wr H of infinite dimension, then there already exists one of finite dimension.

This paper deals with the construction of exact and analytical-numerical solutions with a priori error bounds for systems of the type ut = Auxx, A1u(0, t) + B1ux (0, t) = 0, A2u (1, t) + B2ux (1, t) = 0, 0 < x < 1, t > 0, u(x, 0) = f(x), where A1, A2, B1 and B2 are matrices for which no simultaneous diagonalizable hypothesis is assumed, and A is a positive stable matrix. Given an admissible error ε and a bounded subdomain D, an approximate solution whose error with respect to an exact series solution is less than ε uniformly in D is constructed.

In the first part of the paper we prove several results on the existence of invariant closed ideals for semigroups of bounded operators on a normed Riesz space (of dimension greater than 1) possessing an atom. For instance, if S is a multiplicative semigroup of positive operators on such space that are locally quasinilpotent at the same atom, then S has a non-trivial invariant closed ideal. Furthermore, if T is a non-zero positive operator that is quasinilpotent at an atom and if S is a multiplicative semigroup of positive operators such that TS ≤ ST for all S ∈ S, then S and T have a common non-trivial invariant closed ideal. We also give a simple example of a quasinilpotent compact positive operator on the Banach lattice l∞ with no non-trivial invariant band.

The second part is devoted to the triangularizability of collections of operators on an atomic normed Riesz space L. For a semigroup S of quasinilpotent, order continuous, positive, bounded operators on L we determine a chain of invariant closed bands. If, in addition, L has order continuous norm, then this chain is maximal in the lattice of all closed subspaces of L.

The purpose of this work is to establish a priori C2, α estimates for mesh function solutions of nonlinear positive difference equations in fully nonlinear form on a uniform mesh, where the fully nonlinear finite-difference operator ℱh is concave in the second-order variables. The estimate is an analogue of the corresponding estimate for solutions of concave fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. We deal here with the special case that the operator does not depend explicitly upon the independent variables. We do this by discretizing the approach of Evans for fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations using the discrete linear theory of Kuo and Trudinger. The result in this special case forms the basis for a more general result in part II. We also derive the discrete interpolation inequalities needed to obtain estimates for the interior C2, α semi-norm in terms of the C0 norm.

Let Δ be the Laplace operator on ℝd and 1 < δ < 2. Using transference methods we show that, for max {q, q/(q – 1)} < 4d/(2d + 1 – δ), the maximal function for the Schrödinger group is in Lq, for f ∈ Lq with Δδ/2f ∈Lq. We obtain a similar result for the Airy group exp it Δ3/2. An abstract version of these results is obtained for bounded C0-groups eitL on subspaces of Lp spaces. Certain results extend to maximal functions defined for functions with values in U M D Banach spaces.

In this paper we generalize techniques used by Klyachko and the authors to prove some tessellation results about S2. These results are applied to prove the solvability of certain equations with torsion-free coefficients.

Let T and S be quasisimilar operators on a Banach space X. A well-known result of Herrero shows that each component of the essential spectrum of T meets the essential spectrum of S. Herrero used that, for an n-multicyclic operator, the components of the essential resolvent set with maximal negative index are simply connected. We give new and conceptually simpler proofs for both of Herrero's results based on the observation that on the essential resolvent set of T the section spaces of the sheaves

are complete nuclear spaces that are topologically dual to each other. Other concrete applications of this result are given.

Let (A, m) be a Noetherian local ring such that the residue field A/m is infinite. Let I be arbitrary ideal in A, and M a finitely generated A-module. We denote by ℓ(I, M) the Krull dimension of the graded module ⊕n≥0InM/mInM over the associated graded ring of I. Notice that ℓ(I, A) is just the analytic spread of I. In this paper, we define, for 0 ≤ i ≤ ℓ = ℓ(I, M), certain elements ei(I, M) in the Grothendieck group K0(A/I) that suitably generalize the notion of the coefficients of Hilbert polynomial for m-primary ideals. In particular, we show that the top term eℓ (I, M), which is denoted by eI(M), enjoys the same properties as the ordinary multiplicity of M with respect to an m-primary ideal.

We consider three classes of polynomial differential equations of the form ẋ = y + establish Pn (x, y), ẏ = x + Qn (x, y), where establish Pn and Qn are homogeneous polynomials of degree n, having a non-Hamiltonian centre at the origin. By using a method different from the classical ones, we study the limit cycles that bifurcate from the periodic orbits of such centres when we perturb them inside the class of all polynomial differential systems of the above form. A more detailed study is made for the particular cases of degree n = 2 and n = 3.

In this article we consider sums S(t) = Σnψ (tf(n/t)), where ψ denotes, essentially, the fractional part minus ½ f is a C4-function with f″ non-vanishing, and summation is extended over an interval of order t. For the mean-square of S(t), an asymptotic formula is established. If f is algebraic this can be sharpened by the indication of an error term.

For a class of elliptic equations in the entire space and with nonlinear terms having a possibly uncountable (but of Lebesgue measure zero) set of discontinuities, the existence of strong solutions is established. Two simple applications are then developed. The approach taken is strictly based on set-valued analysis and fixed-points arguments.

The Abel and Cesàro summabilities of two alternating gap series are investigated. We prove that the series is summable at x = 1 (in both senses), but that is not. In 1907, Hardy obtained essentially the same result for the latter series; our proof is shorter and more elementary: we use the Poisson summation formula to derive an explicit estimate for the size of the oscillations as x → 1_. This represents an example of a general method for determining the Abel summability of similar series.
