A w-rise is a pair (ei, ei+1) such that ei+1-ei≥w>0. In this note we find an expression for Tk, w(n, m), the number of m-sequences having precisely k w-rises. The case w = 1 is given in [1] [2]. Also, when w = 1 we give the number when each of the integers 1, 2, …, r must appear at least once.

In this note we give a generalization of a spectral representation theorem for self adjoint operators in a Hilbert space recently obtained by the author [1]. Our interest here is to develop corresponding results for a k-tuple (T1, …, Tk) of commuting self adjoint operators.

The relationship between properties of the generalized inverse of A, A†, and of the adjoint of A, A*, are studied. The property that A†A and AA† commute, called (E4), is investigated. (E4) generalizes the property of A being EPr. A canonical form and a formula for A† are given if a matrix A is (E4). Results are in a Hilbert space setting whenever possible. Examples are given.

Let R be a ring with identity not equal to zero. A right R-module is said to be quasi-injective (pseudo-injective) if for every submodule N of M, every R-homomorphism (R-monomorphism) of N into M can be extended to an R-endomorphism of M [7] ([13]).

It is shown that the operator of integration Fy(x) = ∫x 0y(t) dt defined on the space C(—∞, ∞) of all continuous real valued functions on (—∞, ∞) is a contraction relative to a certain family of seminorms generating the topology of uniform convergence on compacta. Browder and Wermer in [2] give a method for constructing Dirichlet subalgebras of the disk algebra. In this note we show that these Dirichlet algebras do not contain any non-constant functions which satisfy a Lipschitz-one condition on a subinterval of the unit circle.

Our objective in this note is to prove a theorem about the spectral behavior of certain multiplication operators. It was motivated by and yields an extension of part of a theorem of Lumer [3] concerning the possibility of imbedding the classical Hardy spaces in abstract ones.

This note presents characterizations of the injective and of the equationally compact ℵ0-semilattices, which are analogous, respectively, to the characterizations of the injective semilattices given by Bruns and Lakser [2] and of the equationally compact semilattices given by Grätzer and Lakser [3].

Let B be a bounded linear operator having domain and range in a Banach space. If the second-order differential operator d2/dt2–B has a Bohr-Neugebauer type property for Bochner almost periodic functions, then any Stepanov-bounded solution of the differential equation (d2/dt2)u(t) – Bu(t) = g(t) is Bochner almost periodic, with g(t) being a Stepanov-almost periodic continuous function.

The exact probability of making an error at the first stage of a stepwise regression is found, both when the independent variables are fixed and when they are random. The probabilities differ in the two cases because the random variables involved are pairwise independent but not jointly independent.

This paper generalizes some results on pivotal functions of maximum likelihood estimators of location and scale parameters and the related ancillary statistics obtained by Antle and Bain, and Fisher. It shows that the maximum likelihood estimator of the parameter in an invariant statistical model is an essentially equivariant estimator or a transformation variable in a structural model. In the latter case, ancillary statistics in the sense of Fisher used in conjunction with the maximum likelihood estimators can be easily recognized. It is also remarked that the values of maximum likelihood estimators from samples having the same “complexion” are simply related to those of other, perhaps simpler, transformation variables. In the development it also points out the importance of using the correct definition of the likelihood function originally proposed by Fisher.

A partially ordered space is an ordered pair (X, ≤) where X is a compact metric space and ≤ is a partial ordering on X such that ≤ is a closed subset of the Cartesian product X×X. ≤ is said to be a closed partial order on X.

In [4] Carroll and the author have treated the following problem

All rings are associative. A ring T is said to be radical over a subring R if for every t ∈ T, there exists a natural number n(t) such that tn(t) ∈ R.

In [1] Faith showed that if T is radical over R and T is primitive, then R is primitive. We might then ask if the same is true if prime is substituted for primitive.

In this note we give an elementary proof of the following.
