These tears are not
the tears of my eyes
but rather my soul
dissolved
by my breath
Dīk al-Jinn al- Ḥimşī (d. 235/ 849)
My soul melts away
for sorrow every day
and gushes forth
from my eye
Khubzarzī (Khubz ‘aruzzī) ( d.328/ 939)
These are not tears
flowing from my eyes
It is my soul
that has melted
and is dripping
away
al-Jahmī or ʿAlī ibn al-Jahm (d. 249/863)
My tears gushed forth
the day they departed
I do not know
if what flowed
was my tears
or my soul
al-ʿUjayfī al-Kūfī (n.d.)
The word “they” can be understood as “she.”
My last breath bade farewell to me
and accompanied them
the day they departed
leaving me to my sorrow
Wary of the guardian
they bade farewell to me
with their eyelids
and glances
Bashshār ibn Burd (d. 167/784)
The words “they” and “their” refer to “she” and “her.”
My last breath bade farewell to me
the day they departed
I know not which of the departed
I should bid farewell to
They saluted farewell
and I returned it
with my soul lavishly streaming
from the corners
of my eyes
al-Mutanabbī (d. 354/965)
