This volume illuminates and gives voice to actors, objects, events, and processes from the early 1400s to the late 1800s and thinks about how they may relate to Latinx expressive literatures and cultures, challenging common paradigms that think of the field as resolutely modern. The Cambridge University Press Latinx Literature in Transition series is conceived, in part, as a response to the challenges that arise when thinking historically about the field of Latinx literary studies. This first volume in the series undertakes the particularly important task of questioning what have often been presented as the uncomplicated origins of Latinx literature – starting points defined by US history and geography that belie the multiple eras, geographies, cultures, and cosmologies that gave rise to “Latinx” as a storied and complex identity spanning multiple centuries and places. By defining and discussing these complexities and accentuating the transits, transactions, and transcreations of/by multiple peoples over time, we hope to upset the familiar narrative and invoke a much more inclusive, more plural, and less functional origin story for Latinx literature and its creators. Through a focus on very early literary expression and surviving texts, we push the boundaries of what has most commonly been understood and studied as the “history” of Latinx literature.
José Julián Martí Pérez (1853-1895) seems to have known from a very young age that racial difference and discrimination in Cuba, and its use by Whites as a mechanism for social division, were the greatest obstacles to overcome in the island’s quest for independence from Spain – and especially for the creation of a modern, legally and socially egalitarian country. However, his writing has traditionally been classified as literature, even though that same corpus was meant to “do work in the world,” not just be archived, gather dust, or be dissected for its literary value. His writing was performative in that it was not just descriptive. He believed that language could change the world, not deterministically or relatively, but by resolving contradictions such as the dichotomies that separated people by origin, skin color, ethnicity, culture, nationality, religion, and language. Ultimately, it is the rhetorical Martí, the illocutionary and perlocutionary force of his written and spoken words, that needs to be further examined if we are to fully appreciate the transformative potential of many of his writing.
Background: Nipocalimab is a human IgG1 monoclonal antibody targeting FcRn that selectively reduces IgG levels without impacting antigen presentation, T- and B-cell functions. This study describes the effect of nipocalimab on vaccine response. Methods: Open-label, parallel, interventional study randomized participants 1:1 to receive intravenous 30mg/kg nipocalimab at Week0 and 15mg/kg at Week2 and Week4 (active) or no drug (control). On Day 3, participants received Tdap and PPSV®23 vaccinations and were followed through Wk16. Results: Twenty-nine participants completed the study and are included (active, n=15; control, n=14). Participants with a positive anti-tetanus IgG response was comparable between groups at Wk2 and Wk16, but lower at Wk4 (nipocalimab 3/15 [20%] vs control 7/14 [50%]; P=0.089). All maintained anti-tetanus IgG above the protective threshold (0.16IU/mL) through Wk16. While anti-pneumococcal-capsular-polysaccharide (PCP) IgG levels were lower during nipocalimab treatment, the percent increase from baseline at Wk2 and Wk16 was comparable between groups. Post-vaccination, anti-PCP IgG remained above 50mg/L and showed a 2-fold increase from baseline throughout the study in both groups. Nipocalimab co-administration with vaccines was safe and well-tolerated. Conclusions: These findings suggest that nipocalimab does not impact the development of an adequate IgG response to T-cell–dependent/independent vaccines and that nipocalimab-treated patients can follow recommended vaccination schedules.
Honeybees (Apis mellifera) and native bee species have ecological, economic, social, and cultural importance to smallholder coffee farmers. While the ecological contributions of bees to the sustainability of coffee systems are well documented, particularly in relation to the coffee crop, fewer studies have examined socio-economic dimensions of beekeeping for honey as an agroecological diversification strategy for coffee producers. Yet, understanding the multiple values of different diversification strategies is important as many coffee farmers in different parts of the world are finding it increasingly difficult to make a living on coffee alone and are adopting alternative strategies, such as on-farm diversification. In this Participatory Action Research (PAR) study, we examined the opportunities, limitations, and trade-offs of beekeeping (with A. mellifera) as an agroecological diversification option for smallholder coffee farmers in Chiapas, Mexico. We applied a mixed-methods approach, which consisted of monthly surveys with 25 beekeepers of Campesinos Ecológicos de la Sierra Madre de Chiapas (CESMACH)/Apicultores Miel Real del Triunfo (ART) producer cooperatives for 12 months and five focus groups between 2018 and 2019. We found that beekeeping is less labor-intensive than coffee, and there are opportunities to integrate beekeeping into the annual farming cycle of coffee and maize production without causing competing labor demands or additional time pressures. We also found that beekeeping could generate economic gains for peasant families; however, profitability hinged on various factors, such as the price for honey, yield per hive, and the number of beehives. Our results further show that beekeeping yielded multiple non-monetary benefits by contributing to the nutrition and health of farmer families and their communities, serving as a vehicle for horizontal learning and relationship building, and contributing to the emotional well-being of beekeepers. Finally, producers who hoped to gain economically from beekeeping were generally interested in growing their apiaries but expressed concerns about limited technical knowledge and the impacts of climate change. Given the multiple social, economic, and ecological benefits of beekeeping, it has great promise as a part of agroecological food and farming systems. We argue that efforts to promote beekeeping as a diversification strategy should take a holistic approach, underscoring the potential of apiculture to enhance the well-being and resilience of beekeeping families and strengthen food sovereignty and local economies (including solidarity economies) in peasant communities. These findings can be useful in supporting beekeepers and their organizations in strategic planning for enhancing the long-term sustainability of beekeeping.
The Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC) at Cranfield University offers industry and academia an open environment to explore the opportunities for efficient integration of aircraft systems. As a part of the centre, Cranfield University, Rolls-Royce, and DCA Design International jointly have developed the Future Systems Simulator (FSS) for the purpose of research and development in areas such as human factors in aviation, single-pilot operations, future cockpit design, aircraft electrification, and alternative control approaches. Utilising the state-of-the-art modularity principles in simulation technology, the FSS is built to simulate a diverse range of current and novel aircraft, enabling researchers and industry partners to conduct experiments rapidly and efficiently. Central to the requirement, a unique, user-experience-centred development and design process is implemented for the development of the FSS. This paper presents the development process of such a flight simulator with an innovative flight deck. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates the FSS’s capabilities through case studies. The cutting-edge versatility and flexibility of the FSS are demonstrated through the diverse example research case studies. In the final section, the authors provide guidance for the development of an engineering flight simulator based on lessons learned in this project.
As part of the intervention, patients with severe schizophrenia who are cared for in psychiatric rehabilitation units need psychological treatments. However, there is great variability within the psychotherapy alternatives that are proposed for rehabilitation in schizophrenia, and it is necessary to know which are the most efficient interventions in order to prioritize their inclusion in intervention programs.
Objectives
To know the level of evidence of the existing psychotherapy alternatives for the rehabilitation treatment in schizophrenia through the systematic review of recently published studies.
Methods
Consecutive systematic searches in the scientific literature were used in a sensitive and specific way, aimed at identifying the existence of documents in databases and clinical practice guidelines based on evidence of psychological treatment in schizophrenia. Psychosocial and social approaches and family members interventions were excluded, and the search was limited to the last 5 years. The PICO format has been used, and a subsequent critical reading using the AGREE II tool, considering the inclusion criteria of presenting a score >60% in 4 domains.
Results
The following interventions have been found to be therapeutically effective: Level 1B (Early intervention in Psychosis; Patient and Family psychoeducational intervention; Basic ando social skills training; Social cognition and Metakognition training; Cognitive Remediation; Cognitive Behavioral Individual Therapy; Assertive Community treatment; Supported employment). Level 2B (Family Problem Solving Therapy, Dynamic Psychotherapy; Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy); Level 2C (Horticultural, Art, Music, Animals Therapies).
Conclusions
Several psychotherapy alternatives are proposed for rehabilitation in schizophrenia, with known level of evidenca in order to prioritize their inclusion in intervention programs.
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product of polyunsaturated fatty acid peroxidation (Del Rio D, et al. A review of recent studies on MDA as toxic molecule and biological marker of oxidative stress. Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. 2005;15:316-28). It is a biomarker of oxidative stress and is involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (Goh et al. Asian J Psychiatr. 2022;67:102932). Schizofrenia is linked to disrupted oxidative balance and inflammation (Więdłocha et al. Brain Sci. 2023;13:490). Prior research has shown connections between biomarkers and circadian rhythms in schizophrenia (Morera & Abreu. Acta Physiol Scand. 2007;43:313-14) and diabetes type 2 (Kanabrocki EL, et al. Circadian variation in oxidative stress biomarkers in healthy and type II diabetic men. Chronobiol Int. 2002;19:423-39). To determinate if MDA levels have a role in schizophrenia and follow a circadian rhythm may be useful.
Objectives
The aim of our study is to compare diurnal and nocturnal MDA serum levels in patients in acute and stabilized phases of schizophrenia according to CIE-10 to find out if there are variations related with circadian rhythms
Methods
47 patients were included in our study in two clinical phases: acute episode and stabilization. Blood samples were collected at 12:00h and at 00:00h. MDA serum levels were measured twice: when patients were decompensated (admission) and at clinical stabilization (discharge). The relationship between quantitative variables at both times was analysed by T-Student test
Results
There is no significative difference between night and day MDA levels in the acute phase of the schizophrenia (2.22±1.352 vs. 1.93±1.530, p<0.09). There is statistical significance between 12:00 and 00:00 (1.90±1.136 vs. 1.34±0.868, p<0.001) at discharge: it was observed that levels decreased. This result can be interpreted as there is circadian rhythm in stabilized phases.
Conclusions
MDA levels in patients with schizophrenia do not follow a circadian rhythm in the acute episode. When they are clinically stabilized present a circadian change. These patients lose the circadian rhythm in acute episodes. MDA circadian rhythm may help diagnose the clinical phase and its severity. It is necessary to perform more studies to know its utility as an oxidative biomarker
TwinsMX registry is a national research initiative in Mexico that aims to understand the complex interplay between genetics and environment in shaping physical and mental health traits among the country’s population. With a multidisciplinary approach, TwinsMX aims to advance our knowledge of the genetic and environmental mechanisms underlying ethnic variations in complex traits and diseases, including behavioral, psychometric, anthropometric, metabolic, cardiovascular and mental disorders. With information gathered from over 2800 twins, this article updates the prevalence of several complex traits; and describes the advances and novel ideas we have implemented such as magnetic resonance imaging. The future expansion of the TwinsMX registry will enhance our comprehension of the intricate interplay between genetics and environment in shaping health and disease in the Mexican population. Overall, this report describes the progress in the building of a solid database that will allow the study of complex traits in the Mexican population, valuable not only for our consortium, but also for the worldwide scientific community, by providing new insights of understudied genetically admixed populations.
As part of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative, the NIMH seeks to improve experimental measures of cognitive and positive valence systems for use in intervention research. However, many RDoC tasks have not been psychometrically evaluated as a battery of measures. Our aim was to examine the factor structure of 7 such tasks chosen for their relevance to schizophrenia and other forms of serious mental illness. These include the n-back, Sternberg, and self-ordered pointing tasks (measures of the RDoC cognitive systems working memory construct); flanker and continuous performance tasks (measures of the RDoC cognitive systems cognitive control construct); and probabilistic learning and effort expenditure for reward tasks (measures of reward learning and reward valuation constructs).
Participants and Methods:
The sample comprised 286 cognitively healthy participants who completed novel versions of all 7 tasks via an online recruitment platform, Prolific, in the summer of 2022. The mean age of participants was 38.6 years (SD = 14.5, range 18-74), 52% identified as female, and stratified recruitment ensured an ethnoracially diverse sample. Excluding time for instructions and practice, each task lasted approximately 6 minutes. Task order was randomized. We estimated optimal scores from each task including signal detection d-prime measures for the n-back, Sternberg, and continuous performance task, mean accuracy for the flanker task, win-stay to win-shift ratio for the probabilistic learning task, and trials completed for the effort expenditure for reward task. We used parallel analysis and a scree plot to determine the number of latent factors measured by the 7 task scores. Exploratory factor analysis with oblimin (oblique) rotation was used to examine the factor loading matrix.
Results:
The scree plot and parallel analyses of the 7 task scores suggested three primary factors. The flanker and continuous performance task both strongly loaded onto the first factor, suggesting that these measures are strong indicators of cognitive control. The n-back, Sternberg, and self-ordered pointing tasks strongly loaded onto the second factor, suggesting that these measures are strong indicators of working memory. The probabilistic learning task solely loaded onto the third factor, suggesting that it is an independent indicator of reinforcement learning. Finally, the effort expenditure for reward task modestly loaded onto the second but not the first and third factors, suggesting that effort is most strongly related to working memory.
Conclusions:
Our aim was to examine the factor structure of 7 RDoC tasks. Results support the RDoC suggestion of independent cognitive control, working memory, and reinforcement learning. However, effort is a factorially complex construct that is not uniquely or even most strongly related to positive valance. Thus, there is reason to believe that the use of at least 6 of these tasks are appropriate measures of constructs such as working memory, reinforcement learning and cognitive control.
