The crystal structure of a natural, ordered IIb-4 triclinic clinochlore has been refined in space group C1̄ from 4282 unique X-ray intensity measurements of which 3833 are greater than 3 times the statistical counting error (3σ). Unit cell parameters are a = 5.3262(6) Å; b = 9.226(1) Å; c = 14.334(3) Å; α = 90.56(2)°; β = 97.47(2)°; and γ = 89.979(9)°, which represents the greatest deviation from mono-clinic symmetry yet recorded for a triclinic chlorite. The final weighted R is 0.059 for reflections with I > 3σ and 0.064 for all reflections. The chemical formula is (Mg0.966Fe0.034)MI(Mg0.962Fe0.038)M22(Si2.96Al1.04)O10 (OH)2(Mg0.996Fe0.004)M32(Al0.841FeIII0.102Cr0.004Ti0.004)M4(OH)6, which is consistent with electron microprobe (EMP), wet chemical analyses, Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray structure refinement. The high degree of ordering of the divalent versus trivalent octahedral cations in the interlayer is noteworthy, with FeIII and Al in M4 and virtually no Fe in M3. In the 2:1 layer, M1 and M2 each contain similar amounts of Fe. The 2 tetrahedral sites have nearly identical mean oxygen distances and volumes, and thus show no evidence of long-range cation ordering.
A substantial body of work has established that mothers’ internalizing distress can negatively affect children’s socioemotional development. Yet few studies have examined how distinct patterns of mothers’ distress over time differentially impact child behaviors across early childhood. To address this gap, the current study explored developmental trajectories of mothers’ internalizing distress and examined the associations of these patterns with child adjustment outcomes. Mexican immigrant, Dominican immigrant, and African American mothers (N = 272) were annually assessed for internalizing distress over the first 6 years following childbirth. Children’s psychological adjustment (internalizing, externalizing, and hyperactivity behaviors) was measured at the last yearly assessment in first grade. A growth mixture model revealed two distinct classes of distress where mothers were classified as having low stable distress (82.4%) or moderate distress that began as stable then declined when their children were 64 months old (17.6%). Children of mothers in the moderate, late decline class showed greater internalizing, externalizing, and hyperactivity behaviors in the first grade compared to children of mothers in the low stable class. Findings highlight the necessity of supporting the mental health of ethnic minoritized mothers following childbirth and further expand our knowledge of family psychopathology to promote healthy psychological adjustment in children.
Étudier la qualité de vie liée à la santé (QVS) et ses déterminants chez des adolescents consultant pour syndrome de Gilles de la Tourette (SGT).
Méthode
Après hétéro-évaluation par la YGTSS et la CY-BOCS, la QVS des adolescents était mesurée à l’aide de 3 questionnaires d’autoévaluation (SF-36, VSP-A, CHAQ). Des contrôles appariés sur l’âge et le sexe ont rempli les mêmes questionnaires. Les parents des patients et des contrôles ont renseigné les questionnaires sociodémographique et médical, la CBCL et deux hétéroévaluations de la QVS des adolescents (VSP P et CHAQ parents). Tous les participants avaient donné leur consentement éclairé.
Résultats
Pour les 75 adolescents (14,8 ans, DS = 1,8 ; 80 % de garçons) inclus, le score YGTSS moyen était de 33,9 (DS = 20). Pour la CBCL, le score total, les scores symptômes internalisés et symptômes externalisés étaient limites/pathologiques pour 39,4 %, 52,1 % et 33,3 % des adolescents respectivement. La QVS des adolescents SGT était significativement altérée comparée aux contrôles pour toutes les dimensions de la SF-36, pour les dimensions vitalité, relations avec les pairs et loisirs de la VSP A et pour le score total de la CHAQ. On retrouvait des corrélations négatives significatives entre les scores Tics moteurs et sévérité globale de la YGTSS et les dimensions psychologiques et sociales du SF-36, une corrélation positive entre le score Tics vocaux de la YGTSS et le score total à la CHAQ. Les adolescents avec des scores CBCL total et symptômes internalisés limites/pathologiques avaient des scores significativement plus bas sur plusieurs dimensions de QVS.
Conclusion
Les dimensions physiques, psychologiques et sociales de la QVS sont altérées chez les adolescents SGT. La sévérité des tics, les difficultés émotionnelles et comportementales ont un impact négatif sensible sur les dimensions physiques, psychologiques et sociales de la QVS chez les adolescents SGT.
Introduction: Appropriate pain management relies on the use of valid, reliable and age-appropriate tools that are validated in the setting in which they are intended to be used. The aim of the study was to assess the psychometric properties of pain scales commonly used in children presenting to the pediatric emergency department (PED) with an acute musculoskeletal injury. Methods: Convergent validity was assessed by determining the Spearman’s correlations and the agreement using the Bland-Altman method between the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R) and Color Analogue Scale (CAS). Responsiveness to change was determined by performing the Wilcoxon signed-rank test between the pre-post analgesia mean scores. Reliability of the scales was estimated using relative (Spearman’s correlation, Intraclass Correlation Coefficient) and absolute indices (Coefficient of Reliability). Results: A total of 495 participants was included in the analyses. Mean age was 11.9 ±2.7 years and participants were mainly boys (55.3%). Correlation between each pair of scales was 0.79 (VAS/FPS-R), 0.92 (VAS/CAS) and 0.81 (CAS/FPS-R). Limits of agreement (80%CI) were -2.71 to 1.27 (VAS/FPS-R), -1.13 to 1.15 (VAS/CAS) and -1.45 to 2.61 (CAS/FPS-R). Responsiveness to change was demonstrated by significant differences in mean pain scores, among the three scales, between pre- and post-medication administration (p<0.0001). ICC and CR estimates suggested acceptable reliability for the three scales at 0.79 and ±1.49 for VAS, 0.82 and ±1.35 for CAS, and 0.76 and ±1.84 for FPS-R. Conclusion: The scales demonstrated good psychometric properties with a large sample of children with acute pain in the PED. The VAS and CAS showed a stronger convergent validity, while FPS-R was not in agreement with the other scales. Clinically, VAS and CAS scales can be used interchangeably to assess pain intensity of children with acute pain.
We report on the experimental observation of Smith–Purcell (SP) radiation generation by charged particle beam from laser–matter interactions. High-power laser pulses were focused onto a thin metal foil target to generate proton beams with energies up to 1.7 MeV via the target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) process. The particle beam from the TNSA process was sent close to a periodic structure to generate SP radiation. Sub-μJ terahertz pulses were recorded using a pyroelectric detector. Simultaneous measurement of the ion spectra allowed us to estimate the power of the emitted radiation and compare it with the experimental results. The distance between the grating and the particle beam was varied and its effect on the emitted radiation was studied.
To examine the association between adherence to the Dutch Guidelines for a Healthy Diet created by the Dutch Health Council in 2006 and overall and smoking-related cancer incidence.
Design
Prospective cohort study.
Setting
Adherence to the guidelines, which includes one recommendation on physical activity and nine on diet, was measured using an adapted version of the Dutch Healthy Diet (DHD) index. The score ranged from 0 to 90 with a higher score indicating greater adherence to the guidelines. We estimated the hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals for the association between the DHD index (in tertiles and per 20-point increment) at baseline and cancer incidence at follow-up.
Subjects
We studied 35 608 men and women aged 20–70 years recruited into the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition–Netherlands (EPIC-NL) study during 1993–1997.
Results
After an average follow-up of 12·7 years, 3027 cancer cases were documented. We found no significant association between the DHD index (tertile 3 v. tertile 1) and overall (HR = 0·97; 95 % CI 0·88, 1·07) and smoking-related cancer incidence (HR = 0·89; 95 % CI 0·76, 1·06) after adjustment for relevant confounders. Excluding the components physical activity or alcohol from the score did not change the results. None of the individual components of the DHD index was significantly associated with cancer incidence.
Conclusions
In the present study, participants with a high adherence to the Dutch Guidelines for a Healthy Diet were not at lower risk of overall or smoking-related cancer. This does not exclude that other components not included in the DHD index may be associated with overall cancer risk.
Engorged, parasitic water mites were observed to decrease the growth rate and to increase the stadium length of nymphal backswimmers. Unengorged mites were found to have no effect on the host. The extended stadium lengths of parasitized hosts should reduce the instantaneous rate of natural increase of populations of parasitized hosts because this rate is sensitive to any factor that delays the onset of reproduction.
We estimated the number of deaths in France for the year 2000 in HIV-infected adults using three sources. The sources were (1) the ‘Mortalité 2000’ survey (M2000): 964 deaths were documented by 185 hospital wards involved in HIV management; (2) 1288 death certificates with a mention of HIV infection (INSERM-CepiDc) and (3) the French hospital database on HIV infection (FHDH) identified 654 deaths. The capture–recapture method was used with log-linear modelling. Overall 1559 deaths were observed. Estimation of the number of deaths in France was 1699 (95% CI 1671–1727). The completeness of M2000, CepiDc and FHDH were 55%, 76% and 38% respectively. Diversification of diseases and of causes of death in HIV-infected adults may explain: (1) the diversification of physicians involved in their management and incomplete coverage of M2000 and FHDH, and (2) why HIV infection was not mentioned in all death certificates.
The GaN on LGO system is the near perfect template (due to extremely high etch selectivity) for developing a viable thin film/compliant GaN substrate. Herein, we report on our efforts to grow GaN on LGO, including improvement of the microscopic surface morphology using pre-growthpretreatments. We also report on the first transferred thin film GaN substrate grown on LGO, transferred off of LGO, and mounted on GaAs. With this approach, (InAl)GaN alloys can be grown on thin GaN films, implementing a truly “compliant” substrate for the nitride alloy system. In addition, the flexibility of bonding to low cost Si, metal or standard ceramic IC packages is an attractive alternative to SiC and HVPE GaN substrates for optimizing cost verses thermal conductivity concerns. We have demonstratedhigh quality growth of GaN on LGO. X-Ray rocking curves of 145 arc-seconds are obtained with only a 0.28 μm thick film. We present data on the out of plane crystalline quality of GaN/LGO material. Likewise, we show 2 orders of magnitude improvement in residual doping concentration and factors of 4 improvement in electron mobility as compared to the only previously reported electrical data. We show substantial vendor to vendor and intra-vendor LGO material quality variations. We have also quantified the desorption of Ga and Li from the surface of LGO at typical growth temperatures using in situ desorption mass spectroscopy and XPS.
We have investigated the structural, electrical, and optical quality of epitaxial Si and Si1−xGex films grown by MBE on SIMOX (Separation by IMplanted OXygen) silicon substrates. Epitaxial films grown on these SOI substrates have been characterized using planar and cross-sectional TEM, high resolution X-ray diffraction, SIMS, and Seeco chemical etching to delineate defects. We have fabricated Si/SiGe P-i-N photodetectors integrated with Si waveguides on SOI for long wavelength applications. Low reverse leakage current densities were seen in these device structures. The photodetector exhibited an internal quantum efficiency of 50% at 1.1 μm with a frequency response bandwidth of 2 GHz.
1. INTRODUCTION. This paper describes the results of a survey carried out to investigate the views and practices of mariners when navigating in the vicinity of offshore installations in the North Sea.
Since drilling for oil and gas began in the North Sea in the mid 1960s, the possibility of merchant ships colliding with offshore platforms or rigs, has been of concern to both government and operators. There are nearly 100 fixed and floating installations in the UK sector of the North Sea; they vary in size, location and type of construction, but in all cases, collision would pose serious risks to life, pollution and loss of production. Some platforms are near busy shipping lanes and some have several hundred personnel on them at certain times.
