Contributing to the knowledge of digenetic trematodes in northern Australia, this study uses both morphological and molecular analysis to augment the taxonomic descriptions of existing digenean trematodes from the black-spotted croaker, Protonibea diacanthus (Lacepède, 1802) (Teleostei: Sciaenidae) from waters off northern Australia. Using a combination of morphological and molecular techniques, Orientodiploproctodaeum diacanthi Bhutta and Khan, 1970 (Digenea: Cryptogonimidae) and Pleorchis sciaenae Yamaguti, 1938 (Digenea: Acanthocolpidae) are compared with closely related specimens representing new geographical records of these species, and contributing the first phylogenetic analysis of both digenean species. Both O. diacanthi and P. sciaenae were genetically distinct from other reported specimens of the respective families Cryptogonimidae and Acanthocolpidae, based on phylogenetic results and the supporting morphological descriptions from past publications. Despite the conclusive findings in this study, the species presented in the phylogenetic analyses lack sequences across a range of genes, leading to difficulties in deciphering the phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships of many species and highlighting the need for future research to improve species-level identification of parasites in Australian waters.
This paper examines the little-known and long forgotten overseas deployment of Japanese minesweepers to North Korea in 1950 and the events that led to postwar Japan's only known deployment to a combat zone that led to the loss of Japanese life.
Among the most widely distributed species globally, common reed [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.] has generated extensive interest in invasive plant science and management because its introduced strains are highly invasive and often form monocultures that alter ecosystem properties. In desert wetlands in Las Vegas, NV, USA, where management goals included reducing hazardous P. australis fuels and increasing native plant diversity, we assessed variation in P. australis cover, the degree of native plant colonization, and soil seedbanks after P. australis management treatments (cutting, glyphosate–imazapyr herbicide) and wildfires across gradients in soil properties. Based on change in P. australis cover during six measurement events over 24 mo, 24 study sites formed three groups: (1) decreasing cover, where initially high P. australis cover (60% to 85%) decreased to <5% following multiple cutting or herbicide treatments; (2) sustaining low cover, where wildfire or clearing was associated with initially low P. australis cover which remained low (<30%) after multiple herbicide applications; and (3) sustaining high cover (45% to 100% initially and remaining at 30% to 100%), including sites unmanaged or treated/burned only once. High soil salinity correlated with low postmanagement P. australis cover. No native plants were detected in the sustaining high P. australis cover group, despite natives occurring in the seedbank. Where management reduced P. australis cover, minimal native plant colonization did occur. Secondary invasion by other non-native plants was nearly absent. Our results suggest that if P. australis can be initially cleared, multiple herbicide applications can persistently keep cover low, especially on drier, saline soils. Slow native plant colonization suggests that a phased approach may be useful to initially reduce P. australis cover, keep it low via repeated treatments, and actively revegetate sites with native species tailored to the moisture–salinity gradient across P. australis–invaded habitats.
The functioning and richness of marine systems (and biological interactions such as parasitism) are continuously influenced by a changing environment. Using hierarchical modelling of species communities (HMSC), the presence and abundance of multiple parasite species of the black-spotted croaker, Protonibea diacanthus (Sciaenidae), was modelled against environmental measures reflecting seasonal change. Protonibea diacanthus were collected in three seasons across 2019–2021 from four locations within the waters of the Northern Territory, Australia. The length of P. diacanthus proved to have a strong positive effect on the abundance of parasite taxa and overall parasitic assemblage of the sciaenid host. This finding introduces potential implications for parasitism in the future as fish body size responds to fishing pressure and climate changes. Of the various environmental factors measured during the tropical seasons of northern Australia, water temperature and salinity changes were shown as potential causal factors for the variance in parasite presence and abundance, with changes most influential on external parasitic organisms. As environmental factors like ocean temperature and salinity directly affect parasite–host relationships, this study suggests that parasite assemblages and the ecological functions that they perform are likely to change considerably over the coming decades in response to climate change and its proceeding effects.
There is a growing interest in understanding the impact of duty hours and resting times on training outcomes and the well-being of resident physicians. Psychiatry resident’s duty hours in Spain comprise a regular working schedule of 37.5h per week and a minimum of 4 mandatory on-call shifts. The most recent duty hours regulations in Spain were transposed from the European Working Time Directive (EWTD). According to Spanish Law, doctors cannot work for more than 48h per week and need to have resting times per day (at least 12h), per week (at least 36h) as well as annual leave (at least a month). However, there is practically no data on this situation in psychiatry resident physicians.
Objectives
Our aim is firstly, to describe the number of shifts performed by psychiatry resident physicians in Spain. Secondly, to describe compliance with the daily and weekly rests compared to those set in national and European law. Finally, to analyse the difference by demographic variables (gender and year of residency), in both the number of on-call duty shifts and compliance with rests.
Methods
A descriptive cross-sectional study was designed through an online survey adapted from the existing literature. The target population were Spanish psychiatry resident physicians undergoing PGT who started their specialist training during the years 2018–2021. The survey was disseminated through the Spanish regional medical councils to all active psychiatry resident physicians by mail as well as through informal communication channels. The study was authorised by the Spanish Medical Organization’s General Assembly which is the highest ethical and deontological body of physicians in Spain.
Results
55 responses were obtained, of which 61.82% identified as females. The mean number of on-call shifts in the last 3 months was 14.05. This mean was highest in women 14,32 and in the cohort of 2020 15.46 (first year of residency). Among the resident physicians surveyed, 66.07% exceeded the 48h per week limit set by the EWTD and 7% of them did not rest after a 24-h on-call shift. Furthermore, 22% of respondents did not have a day-off after a Saturday on-call shift. The mean working hours when not resting after an on-call-shift were 7 hours. The comparison by gender and year of residency of the main variables can be seen in figures 1 and 2 respectively.

Conclusions
Psychiatry resident physicians in Spain greatly exceed the established 48 h/week EWTD limit. Likewise, non-compliance with labour regulations regarding mandatory rest after on-call duty and minimum weekly rest periods are observed. Differences can be seen by gender and year of residency. The situation described could potentially create a high-risk situation for the health and psychosocial well-being of resident physicians, hinder learning outcomes and could lead to suboptimal patient care.
The seminal contributions of Dante Cicchetti to the field/paradigm/metaparadigm of developmental psychopathology (DP) – and its continuing ascendance as a guiding force for multidisciplinary investigation of normative and atypical development – are legion. Our aim is to illustrate a number of DP’s core principles in the context of (a) prospective longitudinal research on children (particularly girls) with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and (b) theoretical and empirical work dedicated to alleviating the stigma and discrimination toward those experiencing mental health, substance use, and neurodevelopmental challenges. We feature (i) the mutual interplay of perspectives on normative and non-normative development, (ii) reciprocal and transactional processes, and the constructs of equifinaliy and multifinality; (iii) continuities and discontinuities in developmental processes and outcomes, with particular focus on heterotypic continuity; (iv) the inseparability of heritable and environmental risk; (v) multiple levels of analysis, and (vi) the benefits of qualitative perspectives. We highlight that interventions promoting recovery, along with the multi-level facilitation of protective factors/strengths, lie at the heart of both DP and anti-stigma efforts. The ongoing youth mental-health crisis provides a sobering counterpoint to the gains of the DP enterprise over the past half century.
The technique of scanning force microscopy (SFM) was used to study the nanometer-scale structure of Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite thin films. Supporting data were also obtained from Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The surfaces studied included pure Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite, Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite exposed to benzene and Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite exposed to aniline. SFM images of the unexposed Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite surface revealed a smooth surface composed of interlocking platelets. The lateral dimension of these platelets ranged from a few nm to about 1 μm. After exposure to refluxing benzene, the SFM showed that the platelets underwent vertical shifts in position. This is believed to have occurred from intercalated benzene that polymerized in the interlayer region. No SFM evidence was obtained for benzene polymerization on the surface of the hectorite. Hectorite films exposed to aniline at room temperature revealed a post-polymerization structure on the hectorite surface consisting of small polymer bundles. The diameter of these bundles was measured to be 300–3000 Å, similar to the structure seen on electropolymerized polyaniline films. Aniline polymerized on the surface of hectorite films at 180 °C revealed a structure similar to undoped n-methyl-pyrrolidinone (NMP) cast polyaniline films. In this case, the polymer bundles are only 300 Å in dimension on average. XRD and ESR data also indicated interlayer aniline polymerization in Cu(II) exchanged hectorite. Mechanistic considerations affecting these polymerization reactions are presented.
Standardized observation of bed baths and showers for 100 residents in 8 nursing homes revealed inadequate cleansing of body sites (88%–100% failure) and >90% process failure involving lather, firm massage, changing dirty wipes or cloths, and following clean-to-dirty sequence. Insufficient water warmth affected 86% of bathing opportunities. Bathing training and adequate resources are needed.
Background: Lower socioeconomic status is associated with worse outcomes after stroke. We evaluated the differences in acute revascularization treatments in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who were materially deprived compared to those who were not. Methods: In a population-based cohort study, we used linked administrative data to identify community-dwelling adults hospitalized for AIS between 2017-2022 in Ontario, Canada. The main exposure was neighborhood-level material deprivation quintiles. Multivariable logistic regression was used to obtain the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of receiving revascularization treatments (thrombolysis or thrombectomy) for patients in each deprivation quintile compared to the least deprived quintile. Results: We identified 57,709 patients (median age 74 years; 45.9% female). Compared to patients in the least deprived quintile, those with higher deprivation were younger and more likely to have hypertension and diabetes, but less likely to have atrial fibrillation. Compared to patients in the least deprived quintile, fewer patients in the very deprived quintile (17.9% vs 19.6%, aOR 0.88, 95%CI [0.82,0.95]) and in the most deprived quintile (16.6% vs 19.6%, 0.77 [0.71,0.83]) received revascularization treatments. Conclusions: Our results suggest disparities in the use of acute ischemic stroke revascularization treatments by socioeconomic status despite access to universal health care.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated gender disparities in some academic disciplines. This study examined the association of the pandemic with gender authorship disparities in clinical neuropsychology (CN) journals.
Method:
Author bylines of 1,018 initial manuscript submissions to four major CN journals from March 15 through September 15 of both 2019 and 2020 were coded for binary gender. Additionally, authorship of 40 articles published on pandemic-related topics (COVID-19, teleneuropsychology) across nine CN journals were coded for binary gender.
Results:
Initial submissions to these four CN journals increased during the pandemic (+27.2%), with comparable increases in total number of authors coded as either women (+23.0%) or men (+25.4%). Neither the average percentage of women on manuscript bylines nor the proportion of women who were lead and/or corresponding authors differed significantly across time. Moreover, the representation of women as authors of pandemic-related articles did not differ from expected frequencies in the field.
Conclusions:
Findings suggest that representation of women as authors of peer-reviewed manuscript submissions to some CN journals did not change during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Future studies might examine how risk and protective factors may have influenced individual differences in scientific productivity during the pandemic.
In this survey we discuss work of Levin and V’yugin on collections of sequences that are non-negligible in the sense that they can be computed by a probabilistic algorithm with positive probability. More precisely, Levin and V’yugin introduced an ordering on collections of sequences that are closed under Turing equivalence. Roughly speaking, given two such collections

-degrees), can be shown to be a Boolean algebra, and in fact a measure algebra. We demonstrate the interactions of this work with recent results in computability theory and algorithmic randomness: First, we recall the definition of the Levin–V’yugin algebra and identify connections between its properties and classical properties from computability theory. In particular, we apply results on the interactions between notions of randomness and Turing reducibility to establish new facts about specific LV-degrees, such as the LV-degree of the collection of 1-generic sequences, that of the collection of sequences of hyperimmune degree, and those collections corresponding to various notions of effective randomness. Next, we provide a detailed explanation of a complex technique developed by V’yugin that allows the construction of semi-measures into which computability-theoretic properties can be encoded. We provide two examples of the use of this technique by explicating a result of V’yugin’s about the LV-degree of the collection of Martin-Löf random sequences and extending the result to the LV-degree of the collection of sequences of DNC degree.
