While phase transitions have been discussed at length, no phase transition has been rigorously established up to this point. This gap is filled in this final chapter, where comparison with oriented percolation is used to prove that contact processes with sufficiently large infection rates survive. This result depends on a comparison between k-dependent and independent random variables due to Ligett, Schonmann, and Stacey, which is proved in detail. In the final exercises, the reader is asked to apply the method to other interacting particle systems, such as a model with cooperative branching.
Breast cancer represents one of the main causes of mortality among women, and the consumption of bioactive compounds seems to contribute to improving the prognosis of the disease. However, the relationship between polyphenol intake and breast cancer has not yet been fully elucidated. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between polyphenol intake and breast cancer mortality, survival, and recurrence. This is an observational study with a prospective sample of 95 women, followed up for an average of 11.5 years. Intake of polyphenols was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and estimated using the Phenol-Explorer® database. Cox proportional hazard models were used to investigate the associations. Survival curves were calculated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. An inverse association was found between the intake of total polyphenols, phenolic acids, and lignans, and the risk of breast cancer-specific mortality (HR= 0.20, 95% CI [0.05-0.80]; HR= 0.09, 95% CI [0.01-0.50]; HR= 0.15, 95% CI [0.04-0.63], respectively). Phenolic acids also showed an inverse association with breast cancer recurrence (HR= 0.35, 95% CI [0.13-0.98]) and all-cause mortality (HR= 0.23, 95% CI [0.07 - 0.77]). Coffee was the major contributor to total polyphenol, phenolic acid, and lignan intake. Total polyphenol intake was associated with longer survival when breast cancer mortality was considered (p=0.048). In conclusion, higher intake of polyphenols was associated with lower breast cancer-specific mortality. In addition, phenolic acids were associated with lower all-cause mortality and breast cancer recurrence. Further studies are needed to confirm these associations.
The Introduction sets out the historiographical debates, theoretical approaches and arguments of this study into enslaved people’s emotional lives. Enslaved people’s testimony often includes deeply emotional content, yet slavery historians have been reluctant to utilise emotion as a category of analysis when analysing slavery’s impact. The Introduction outlines how this book brings together methods from the history of emotions, slavery studies, memory studies and oral history to analyse enslaved people’s emotional ideologies, experiences, practices and expressions in the antebellum US South. Applying these methods to a range of testimony by enslaved and formerly enslaved people, the Introduction outlines this book’s key argument: that enslaved people created their own affective value system to refuse, resist and survive the system of slavery.
Adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot represent a growing clinical population at risk for long-term cardiovascular complications. Characterising their postoperative course and late outcomes is essential to guide surveillance and management.
Objectives:
To describe the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of adult patients (≥18 years) with repaired tetralogy of Fallot who received care at a quaternary-care institution between January 2000 and December 2024.
Methods:
We performed a retrospective cohort study. Adult patients with a diagnosis of repaired tetralogy of Fallot who had undergone complete surgical repair either during the study period or before it were included. Clinical and sociodemographic data were obtained.Variables related to prior palliative procedures, type of surgical repair, reinterventions (surgical or catheter-based), and long-term outcomes were analysed.
Results:
A total of 56 patients were included; 31 (55.4%) were women. The median duration of follow-up after repair was 23 years; twenty patients (35.7%) had undergone a palliative or prior intervention before complete repair. The most common type of outflow tract reconstruction was a transannular patch (37.5%), followed by homograft implantation (25.0%). Reinterventions occurred in 29 patients (51.8%), most commonly pulmonary valve replacement (23 patients, 41.0%), mainly due to progressive pulmonary regurgitation and right ventricular dilation. Arrhythmic complications included premature ventricular contractions in 35.7% of patients. Long-term mortality was 3.6%.
Conclusions:
Adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot demonstrate high long-term survival; however, late complications are common and frequently require surgical or catheter-based reintervention. These findings underscore the need for lifelong specialised follow-up in adult CHD programmes.
Medical experts and epidemiologists knew the importance of hygiene on the home front. They convinced local, state, and federal authorities that the war on disease had to be fought. Consequently, the Modern Health Crusade, which originated in Detroit, became a nationwide movement in 1915. Federal authorities realized that a high infant mortality rate threatened the fabric of American society in the long run. Additionally, in order to build a strong and healthy army (and nation), bodies had to be physically fit. Children began to matter to the military and the nation writ large. As hygiene became a national concern, between 1914 and 1918, both medical and military authorities promoted hygienic standards to lift the nation.
This study investigated the annual culling rate and its main causes on dairy farms in the central region of Santa Fe, Argentina. A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and April 2025 on 77 farms located in the central dairy region of Santa Fe province, Argentina (Castellanos and Las Colonias departments). On each farm, an in-person survey was conducted with the farm manager. Information was collected regarding the farm demographics, the number of culls and mortalities and the causes of culling. The average annual total culling rate for pasture-based systems was 22.3% (range: 10–34%), while for confined systems it was 31% (range: 22–54%). The proportion of cows culled in pasture-based systems was 15.6% (range: 2–30%) compared to 23.6% (range: 14–43%) in confined systems. The annual mortality rate in pasture-based systems was 6.7% (range: 2–20%), while in confined systems it was 7.4% (range: 4–17%). The main causes of culling were reproductive problems, udder health issues, hoof diseases, infectious diseases and low milk production. The main causes of mortality on the farms were traumatic injuries, infectious diseases, mastitis and metabolic disorders, among others. Average cow longevity in pasture-based systems was 4.3 (range: 2–9) lactations compared to 2.9 (range: 1.4–4) lactations in confined systems. Productivity, animal welfare and dairy herd longevity are shaped primarily by management practices rather than by production system type alone, and both pasture-based and confined systems can be optimized to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Survivors are not a random sample of patients with disease, they are biased. How they differ from non-survivors must be understood before survival can be attributed to a disease process, or therapeutic intervention. Live-birth bias is a particular example; many conceptions fail before term birth and this influences the live-birth population. The importance of collider bias is reviewed. Workers are generally healthier than those not working introducing bias into occupational health studies.
Scientific data on the influences of salinity shifts on the survival and behavioural attributes of marine animals is valuable to select potential coastal aquaculture candidates/commercial cultivation sites and to devise conservation strategies in the climate change scenario. This study establishes the survival ranges following gradual and abrupt salinity shifts for a high-value marine lobster species, Panulirus homarus. Lethal concentration limits differed between gradual and abrupt salinity shifts, with a broader tolerance observed under gradual shifts. There was 100% survival between 17 and 44‰ and between 26 and 41‰ following gradual and abrupt salinity shifts. As behavioural responses are critical in understanding the physiology and welfare status of animals, behavioural attributes, viz. antennule flicking per minute (AFM) and feed response time (FRT) were evaluated upon salinity shifts from the control (35‰). The sudden increase in AFM was the first visible reaction to the salinity shifts followed by a sustained decline beyond particular ranges in both gradual and abrupt shifts. FRT was significantly decreased beyond specific salinity ranges on gradual and abrupt salinity shifts and the animals became completely anorectic beyond 44–14‰, and beyond 44–23‰, respectively, on gradual and abrupt shifts. A better coping mechanism and a wider range of salinity tolerance were observed for gradual shifts than abrupt shifts.
Rational choice theories of political behaviour start from the premise that parties seek policy, office, and votes. In accordance with this premise, previous research has shown that electoral performance and office achievement independently affect party leader survival. However, we know little about how goal attainment interacts across these two domains. This paper proposes a novel hypothesis stating that intrinsic goals (office) dominate over purely instrumental ones (votes). As a result, the impact of electoral performance on party leader survival should be conditional on office achievement. Using data on over 500 party leaders in 14 parliamentary democracies between 1965 and 2012, we show that electoral performance and office achievement strongly affect leadership turnover. However, we also demonstrate that the electoral performance effect disappears when parties enter or exit office at the same time. These results constitute the best direct evidence to date that parties prioritise office achievement over electoral success.
In The Epistemology of Disasters and Social Change (2024)—an energetic dovetail of disaster sociology and feminist epistemology—Pascoe and Stirling claim there is no such thing as a natural disaster, as all disasters are the product/result of human construction. They use Audre Lorde’s poem, “A Litany for Survival” to anchor their project and focus on Lorde’s understanding of the relationship between poetry, knowledge, and survival to critique dominant the disaster imaginaries. I suggest that a more accurate use of “A Litany for Survival” leans toward a phenomenological epistemology of surviving, rather than a focus on the survivor.
Globally, millions of animals transition through wildlife rehabilitation facilities annually. Data recorded at these facilities can be used to quantitatively assess factors which result in the animals’ admittance, treatment, release, and survival, and how impacts such as high pathogen avian influenza (HPAI) has altered these parameters. Twenty-five years of records of herring gull (Larus argentatus) admittances into RSPCA Mallydams Wood Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Hastings, UK (between 1999 and 2024) were reviewed to determine admission factors and their impacts on the number of days in care and the likelihood of release. Additionally, for the years 1999 to 2010, data were collected on days of post-release survival and distances from the centre travelled from ringed and released birds. During that 25-year period, 17,334 herring gulls were admitted into the Mallydams Centre with 9,013 released, and 2,796 ringed and released between 1999 and 2010. Release rates varied significantly with the category of problem identified at admission. Wild nesting herring gulls, even without the impact of HPAI, have been declining throughout the UK, and the additional anthropogenic pressures on urban gull populations have resulted in a documented national decline in the species. Rehabilitating and returning birds to the wild has shown to be important both for their animal welfare and population, as well as helping identify the impact of HPAI on local urban populations of all relevant species. Results from this research can be utilised to adapt training and resources at rehabilitation centres and determine euthanasia protocols to optimise animal welfare along with release and survival success.
What is happening in Gaza now is a total displacement of any form of normality. This displacement of the normal has been effected by a population-wide project of social reproduction. Every Gazan, including children, is solicited to reproduce life, to survive. At the same time, social reproduction in Palestine has always also entailed insurgent possibilities, where this form of labour has indeed sustained and reproduced Palestinian revolutionary action. From collective kitchens to local initiatives of care for children, to using drones as musical instruments to distract children from the deafening violence of its soundscape, social reproduction is iterated as both survival and insurgency. This short intervention tries to think through the question of how to make sense of social reproduction as capitalist oppression through the unwaged housework, and as colonial violence through the mass extermination of a population, without leaving behind its potential for insurgency?
A common feature of all existing organisms is their ability to adapt, survive, and even thrive in the face of danger. Evolution has endowed organisms with a myriad of defensive mechanisms, from bodily phenotypes and sensory apparatus to learning mechanisms. Humans are no different, and a wide variety of defensive mechanisms has allowed us to adapt to changing landscapes and threats. Yet, we are unique in our capacity to predict the future, to learn from others through many streams of communication vicariously, and to experience emotions consciously. In this chapter, we briefly go through the evolutionary history of defensive behaviors and how they are guided by a canonical set of ecological conditions, by the characteristics of the threat, and by the organisms’ repertoire of cognitive and sensory abilities. We explore the converging mechanisms across species and highlight the uniqueness of humans, including the rich internal representations of the dangers that allow us to experience a large array of emotions.
Lightning strike is rare, with a reported incidence of around 1:100,000. There are few reports of survival after cardiac arrest due to lightning strike. We report the case of a 12-year-old male survivor. Though he had a prolonged out of hospital cardiac arrest and initial poor systolic function, widespread ST segment elevation on electrocardiography, and elevated cardiac troponin I, he survived with a good cardiac and neurological outcome.
The present study was conducted to determine self-management and influencing factors in dialysis patients who experienced the earthquake.
Methods
The study was conducted descriptively with 125 patients receiving dialysis in a city affected by the earthquake in Türkiye. Data were collected with the “Personal Information Form” and the “Chronic Illness Self-Management Scale” (CISMS). Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis, Spearman Correlation tests, Wilcoxon, and Linear Regression were used in the statistical analysis.
Results
The study found that 9.6% of the patients were trapped under the rubble in the earthquake, 71.2% lost a relative, 43.8% changed dialysis centers, 36.8% missed dialysis sessions, and 51.2% could not comply with the diet after the earthquake. Women (p < 0.001), those with secondary school or lower educational levels (p < 0.05), those with another chronic disease, and those who lost a relative in the earthquake had lower health care maintenance efficacy (p < 0.05). The treatment adherence of those who adhered to the diet was higher than those who did not (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
It was determined that the level of self-stigma of the patients after the earthquake was low, their treatment adherence was high, and there were many variables affecting their self-management.
Cattle (Bos spp.) grazing on weed–mixed forage biomass may potentially spread weed seeds, leading to plant invasions across pasturelands. Understanding the possibility and intensity of this spread is crucial for developing effective weed control methods in grazed areas. This research undertook an in vitro experiment to evaluate the germination and survival of five dominant weed species in the southern United States [Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson), yellow foxtail [Setaria pumila (Poir.) Roem. & Schult.], johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.], field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) and pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.)] upon incubation in rumen fluid for eight time periods (0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h). For the 96-h treatment, a full Tilley and Terry procedure was applied after 48 h for stopping fermentation, followed by incubation for another 48 h simulating abomasum digestion. Seed germination, upon incubation, varied significantly among weed species, with I. lacunosa reaching zero germination after only 24 h of incubation, whereas A. palmeri and S. halepense retained up to 3% germination even after 96 h of incubation. The hard seed coats of A. palmeri and S. halepense likely made them highly resistant, whereas the I. lacunosa seed coat became easily permeable and ruptured under rumen fluid incubation. This suggests that cattle grazing can selectively affect seed distribution and invasiveness of weeds in grazed grasslands and rangelands, including the designated invasive and noxious weed species. As grazing is a significant component in animal husbandry, a major economic sector in the U.S. South, our research provides important insights into the potential role of grazing as a dispersal mechanism for some of the troublesome arable weeds in the United States. The results offer opportunities for devising customized feeding and grazing practices combined with timely removal of weeds in grazeable lands at the pre-flowering stage for effective containment of weeds.
This article explores 2 key earthquake survival strategies: the widely endorsed “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” (DCH) method and the alternative fetal position within a survival triangle. While DCH provides mechanical protection from falling debris, its effectiveness in scenarios involving structural collapse and prolonged entrapment remains uncertain. Drawing on recent field data and thermodynamic considerations, this paper argues that the fetal position may offer survival advantages by minimizing heat loss and conserving metabolic energy—especially under cold conditions and delayed rescue. We emphasize the need for context-sensitive public safety guidance and further comparative research to inform adaptive earthquake preparedness protocols.
This chapter treats the daily life experiences of Jews who survived the Second World War in the interior regions of the Soviet Union. Included among this group were Soviet citizens who evacuated eastward ahead of invading German armies as well as refugees from Poland, the Baltic states, Romania, and Czechoslovakia.
The presence of nodal disease at presentation of a head and neck mucosal-based squamous cell carcinoma has a significant impact upon outcomes.
Methods
This is a retrospective, ethics-approved study in which patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx and oral cavity were reviewed and compared with respect to nodal disease (N0 vs N1–N2 vs N3). Patient, disease and treatment parameters were evaluated with ultimate local control, regional control, cancer-specific survival and overall survival investigated.
Results
In the cohort of 1265 patients, 764 presented with nodal disease (N3 = 60). The majority of the N3 group had oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (52%) and experienced worse ultimate local control (63%; p < 0.001), regional control (67%; p < 0.001) and both squamous cell carcinoma and overall survival (log rank p < 0.001).
Conclusion
Patients presenting with N3 nodal disease had poor regional control, a lower cancer-specific survival and a worse overall survival compared to patients with lesser to no nodal disease.
Cost-effectiveness models fully informed by real-world epidemiological parameters yield the best results, but they are costly to obtain. Model calibration using real-world data/evidence (RWD/E) on routine health indicators can provide an alternative to improve the validity and acceptability of the results. We calibrated the transition probabilities of the reference chemotherapy treatment using RWE on patient overall survival (OS) to model the survival benefit of adjuvant trastuzumab in Indonesia.
Methods
A Markov model comprising four health states was initially parameterized using the reference-treatment transition probabilities, obtained from published international evidence. We then calibrated these probabilities, targeting a 2-year OS of 86.11 percent from the RWE sourced from hospital registries. We compared projected OS duration and life-years gained (LYG) before and after calibration for the Nelder–Mead, Bound Optimization BY Quadratic Approximation, and generalized reduced gradient (GRG) nonlinear optimization methods.
Results
The pre-calibrated transition probabilities overestimated the 2-year OS (92.25 percent). GRG nonlinear performed best and had the smallest difference with the RWD/E OS. After calibration, the projected OS duration was significantly lower than their pre-calibrated estimates across all optimization methods for both standard chemotherapy (~7.50 vs. 11.00 years) and adjuvant trastuzumab (~9.50 vs. 12.94 years). LYG measures were, however, similar (~2 years) for the pre-calibrated and calibrated models.
Conclusions
RWD/E calibration resulted in realistically lower survival estimates. Despite the little difference in LYG, calibration is useful to adapt external evidence commonly used to derive transition probabilities to the policy context, thereby enhancing the validity and acceptability of the modeling results.
