Let S be an ideal of the free inverse monoid on a set X, and let ℬ denote the Banach algebra l1(S). It is shown that the following statements are equivalent: ℬ is *-primitive; ℬ is prime; X is infinite. A similar result holds if ℬ is replaced by ℂ[S], the complex semigroup algebra of S.
Let 𝒳 be a space of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss. In this paper, two weighted estimates related to weights are established for singular integral operators with nonsmooth kernels via a new sharp maximal operator associated with a generalized approximation to the identity. As applications, the weighted Lp(𝒳) and weighted endpoint estimates with general weights are obtained for singular integral operators with nonsmooth kernels, their commutators with BMO (𝒳) functions, and associated maximal operators. Some applications to holomorphic functional calculi of elliptic operators and Schrödinger operators are also presented.
A nine-dimensional exponential Lie group G and a linear form ℓ on the Lie algebra of G are presented such that for all Pukanszky polarizations 𝔭 at ℓ the canonically associated unitary representation ρ=ρ(ℓ,𝔭) of G has the property that ρ(ℒ1(G)) does not contain any nonzero operator given by a compactly supported kernel function. This example shows that one of Leptin’s results is wrong, and it cannot be repaired.
Let , let G and H belocally compact groups and let ω be a continuous homomorphism of G into H. We prove, if G is amenable, the existence of a linear contraction of the Banach algebra CVp(G) of the p-convolution operators on G into CVp(H) which extends the usual definition of the image of a bounded measure by ω. We also discuss the uniqueness of this linear contraction onto important subalgebras of CVp(G). Even if G and H are abelian, we obtain new results. Let Gd denote the group G provided with a discrete topology. As a corollary, we obtain, for every discrete measure, , for Gd amenable. For arbitrary G, we also obtain . These inequalities were already known for p=2 . The proofs presented in this paper avoid the use of the Hilbertian techniques which are not applicable to . Finally, for Gd amenable, we construct a natural map of CVp (G)into CVp (Gd) .
In the dual object of an infinite compact, connected group, every infinite Sidon set contains an infinite subset on which full interpolation can be performed using very small classes of measures (discrete measures on arbitrarily small sets or nonnegative discrete measures). In particular, the Figà-Talamanca–Rider subset of an infinite product of compact, connected, simple Lie groups has these kinds of interpolation. This substantially improves previous interpolation results.
We give a simplified proof of the complex inversion formula for semigroups and, more generally, solution families for scalar-type Volterra equations, including the stronger versions on unconditional martingale differences (UMD) spaces. Our approach is based on (elementary) Fourier analysis.
The distributions of nearest neighbour random walks on hypercubes in continuous time t 0 can be expressed in terms of binomial distributions; their limit behaviour for t, N → ∞ is well-known. We study here these random walks in discrete time and derive explicit bounds for the deviation of their distribution from their counterparts in continuous time with respect to the total variation norm. Our results lead to a recent asymptotic result of Diaconis, Graham and Morrison for the deviation from uniformity for N →∞. Our proofs use Krawtchouk polynomials and a version of the Diaconis–Shahshahani upper bound lemma. We also apply our methods to certain birth-and-death random walks associated with Krawtchouk polynomials.
