We analyse features of the patterns formed from a simple model for a martensitic phase transition that fragments the unit square into rectangles. This is a fragmentation model that can be encoded by a general branching random walk. An important quantity is the distribution of the lengths of the interfaces in the pattern, and we establish limit theorems for some of the asymptotics of the interface profile. In particular, we are able to use a general branching process to show almost sure power law decay of the number of interfaces of at least a certain size and a general branching random walk to examine the numbers of rectangles of a certain aspect ratio. In doing so we extend a theorem on the growth of the general branching random walk as well as developing results on the tail behaviour of the limiting random variable in our general branching process.

The Parisi formula is a self-contained description of the infinite-volume limit of the free energy of mean-field spin glass models. We showthat this quantity can be recast as the solution of a Hamilton–Jacobi equation in the Wasserstein space of probability measures on the positive half-line.

Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper, we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts.

We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Nonrigorous saddle-point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy–Widom (associated to the Gaussian orthogonal or symplectic ensemble) or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.

Modelling a normal–superconducting interface, we consider a semi-infinite wire whose edge is adjacent to a normal magnetic metal, assuming asymptotic convergence, away from the boundary, to the purely superconducting state. We obtain that the maximal current which can be carried by the interface diminishes in the small normal conductivity limit.

In last passage percolation models lying in the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the energy of long energy-maximizing paths may be studied as a function of the paths’ pair of endpoint locations. Scaled coordinates may be introduced, so that these maximizing paths, or polymers, now cross unit distances with unit-order fluctuations, and have scaled energy, or weight, of unit order. In this article, we consider Brownian last passage percolation in these scaled coordinates. In the narrow wedge case, when one endpoint of such polymers is fixed, say at $(0,0)\in \mathbb{R}^{2}$, and the other is varied horizontally, over $(z,1)$, $z\in \mathbb{R}$, the polymer weight profile as a function of $z\in \mathbb{R}$ is locally Brownian; indeed, by Hammond [‘Brownian regularity for the Airy line ensemble, and multi-polymer watermelons in Brownian last passage percolation’, Preprint (2016), arXiv:1609.02971, Theorem 2.11 and Proposition 2.5], the law of the profile is known to enjoy a very strong comparison to Brownian bridge on a given compact interval, with a Radon–Nikodym derivative in every $L^{p}$ space for $p\in (1,\infty )$, uniformly in the scaling parameter, provided that an affine adjustment is made to the weight profile before the comparison is made. In this article, we generalize this narrow wedge case and study polymer weight profiles begun from a very general initial condition. We prove that the profiles on a compact interval resemble Brownian bridge in a uniform sense: splitting the compact interval into a random but controlled number of patches, the profile in each patch after affine adjustment has a Radon–Nikodym derivative that lies in every $L^{p}$ space for $p\in (1,3)$. This result is proved by harnessing an understanding of the uniform coalescence structure in the field of polymers developed in Hammond [‘Exponents governing the rarity of disjoint polymers in Brownian last passage percolation’, Preprint (2017a), arXiv:1709.04110] using techniques from Hammond (2016) and [‘Modulus of continuity of polymer weight profiles in Brownian last passage percolation’, Preprint (2017b), arXiv:1709.04115].

In a recent study of how the output voltage of a Hall plate is affected by the shape of the plate and the size of its contacts, U. Ausserlechner has come up with a remarkable double integral that can be viewed as a generalisation of the classical elliptic ‘arithmetic–geometric mean (AGM)’ integral. Here we discuss transformation properties of the integral, which were experimentally observed by Ausserlechner, as well as its analytical and arithmetic features including connections with modular forms.

The computation efficiency of high dimensional (3D and 4D) B-spline interpolation, constructed by classical tensor product method, is improved greatly by precomputing the B-spline function. This is due to the character of NLT code, i.e. only the linearised characteristics are needed so that the unperturbed orbit as well as values of the B-spline function at interpolation points can be precomputed at the beginning of the simulation. By integrating this fixed point interpolation algorithm into NLT code, the high dimensional gyro-kinetic Vlasov equation can be solved directly without operator splitting method which is applied in conventional semi-Lagrangian codes. In the Rosenbluth-Hinton test, NLT runs a few times faster for Vlasov solver part and converges at about one order larger time step than conventional splitting code.

A coupled mathematical system of four quasi-linear partial differential equations and the initial-boundary value conditions is presented to interpret transient behavior of three dimensional semiconductor device with heat conduction. The electric potential is defined by an elliptic equation, the electron and hole concentrations are determined by convection-dominated diffusion equations and the temperature is interpreted by a heat conduction equation. A mixed finite element approximation is used to get the electric field potential and one order of computational accuracy is improved. Two concentration equations and the heat conduction equation are solved by a fractional step scheme modified by a second-order upwind difference method, which can overcome numerical oscillation, dispersion and computational complexity. This changes the computation of a three dimensional problem into three successive computations of one-dimensional problem where the method of speedup is used and the computational work is greatly shortened. An optimal second-order error estimate in L2 norm is derived by prior estimate theory and other special techniques of partial differential equations. This type of parallel method is important in numerical analysis and is most valuable in numerical application of semiconductor device and it can successfully solve this international famous problem.

The Jiles-Atherton (J-A) model is a commonly used physics-based model in describing the hysteresis characteristics of ferromagnetic materials. However, citations and interpretation of this model in literature have been non-uniform. Solution methods for solving numerically this model has not been studied adequately. In this paper, through analyzing the mathematical properties of equations and the physical mechanism of energy conservation, we point out some unreasonable descriptions of this model and develop a relatively more accurate, modified J-A model together with its numerical solution method. Our method employs a fixed point method to compute anhysteretic magnetization. We obtain the susceptibility value of the anhysteretic magnetization analytically and apply the 4th order Runge-Kutta method to the solution of total magnetization. Computational errors are estimated and then precisions of the solving method in describing various materials are verified. At last, through analyzing the effects of the accelerating method, iterative error and step size on the computational errors, we optimize the numerical method to achieve the effects of high precision and short computing time. From analysis, we determine the range of best values of some key parameters for fast and accurate computation.

Multi-field coupling simulation method based on the physical principles is used to simulate the discharge characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator. Considering the effect of the energy transferring for air, the flow characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator are simulated. The elastic heating sources and ion joule heating sources are the two main sources of energy. Through the collisions, the energy of ions is transferred to the neutral gas quickly. The flow characteristics of a series of blast waves and the synthetic jet which erupt from the plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) actuator are simulated. The blast wave not only promotes outward, but also accelerates the gas mixing the inhaled gas from the outside cavity with the residual gas inside the cavity. The performances of PSJ actuator fluctuate in the first three incentive cycles and become stable after that.

Extended hydrodynamic models for carrier transport are derived from the semiconductor Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation of the scattering term, by using the globally hyperbolic moment method and the moment-dependent relaxation time. Incorporating the microscopic relaxation time and the applied voltage bias, a formula is proposed to determine the relaxation time for each moment equation, which sets different relaxation rates for different moments such that higher moments damp faster. The resulting models would give more satisfactory results of macroscopic quantities of interest with a high-order convergence to those of the underlying Boltzmann equation as the involved moments increase, in comparison to the corresponding moment models using a single relaxation time. In order to simulate the steady states efficiently, a multigrid solver is developed for the derived moment models. Numerical simulations of an n +-n-n + silicon diode are carried out to demonstrate the validation of the presented moment models, and the robustness and efficiency of the designed multigrid solver.

We consider the zero-resistivity limit for Hasegawa–Wakatani equations in a cylindrical domain when the initial data are Stepanov almost-periodic in the axial direction. First, we prove the existence of a solution to Hasegawa–Wakatani equations with zero resistivity; second, we obtain uniform a priori estimates with respect to resistivity. Such estimates can be obtained in the same way as for our previous results; therefore, the most important contribution of this paper is the proof of the existence of a local-in-time solution to Hasegawa–Wakatani equations with zero resistivity. We apply the theory of Bohr–Fourier series of Stepanov almost-periodic functions to such a proof.

This work deals with the numerical resolution of the M1-Maxwell system in the quasi-neutral regime. In this regime the stiffness of the stability constraints of classical schemes causes huge calculation times. That is why we introduce a new stable numerical scheme consistent with the transitional and limit models. Such schemes are called Asymptotic-Preserving (AP) schemes in literature. This new scheme is able to handle the quasi-neutrality limit regime without any restrictions on time and space steps. This approach can be easily applied to angular moment models by using a moments extraction. Finally, two physically relevant numerical test cases are presented for the Asymptotic-Preserving scheme in different regimes. The first one corresponds to a regime where electromagnetic effects are predominant. The second one on the contrary shows the efficiency of the Asymptotic-Preserving scheme in the quasi-neutral regime. In the latter case the illustrative simulations are compared with kinetic and hydrodynamic numerical results.

Recently, organic nanostructures have attracted much attention, and amongst them peptide nanotubes are of interest in many fields of application including medicine and nanobiotechnology. Peptide nanotubes are formed by self-assembly of cyclic peptides with alternating L- and D-amino acids. Due to their biodegradability, flexible design and easy synthesis, many applications have been proposed such as artificial transmembrane ion channels, templates for nanoparticles, mimicking pore structures, nanoscale testing tubes, biosensors and carriers for targeted drug delivery. The mechanisms of an ion, a water molecule and an ion–water cluster entering into a peptide nanotube of structure cyclo[(-D-Ala-L-Ala-)$_{4}$] are explored here. In particular, the Lennard-Jones potential and a continuum approach are employed to determine three entering mechanisms: (i) through the tube open end, (ii) through a region between each cyclic peptide ring and (iii) around the edge of the tube open end. The results show that while entering the nanotube by method (i) is possible, an ion or a molecule requires initial energy to overcome an energetic barrier to be able to enter the nanotube through positions (ii) and (iii). Due to its simple structure, the D-, L-Ala cyclopeptide nanotube is chosen in this model; however, it can be easily extended to include more complicated nanotubes.

We investigate the mechanics of a nano logic gate, comprising a metallofullerene which is located inside a square-shaped single-walled carbon nanotorus involving non-metallic, single-walled carbon nanotubes with perfect nanotoroidal corners. These are highly novel and speculative nanodevices whose construction, no doubt, involves many technical challenges. The energy for the system is obtained from the 6–12 Lennard-Jones potential with the continuous approximation. Our approach shows that there is not much difference between the energy when the metallofullerene is located in the tubes compared to when it is at the corners, and therefore the metallofullerene may be controlled by a small voltage. By applying two voltage inputs to produce external electric fields, one for the left–right motion and the other for the top–bottom motion, the metallofullerene can be moved to one of the four corners. Assuming that at the four corners there are charge detectors, the proposed device can be designed as a logic gate with different signals corresponding to particular gates.

In this paper, we numerically study the ground and first excited states of the fractional Schrödinger equation in an infinite potential well. Due to the nonlocality of the fractional Laplacian, it is challenging to find the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the fractional Schrödinger equation analytically. We first introduce a normalized fractional gradient flow and then discretize it by a quadrature rule method in space and the semi-implicit Euler method in time. Our numerical results suggest that the eigenfunctions of the fractional Schrödinger equation in an infinite potential well differ from those of the standard (non-fractional) Schrödinger equation. We find that the strong nonlocal interactions represented by the fractional Laplacian can lead to a large scattering of particles inside of the potential well. Compared to the ground states, the scattering of particles in the first excited states is larger. Furthermore, boundary layers emerge in the ground states and additionally inner layers exist in the first excited states of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our simulated eigenvalues are consistent with the lower and upper bound estimates in the literature.

We consider the dynamics of the director in a nematic liquid crystal when under the influence of an applied electric field. Using an energy variational approach we derive a dynamic model for the director including both dissipative and inertial forces.

A numerical scheme for the model is proposed by extending a scheme for a related variational wave equation. Numerical experiments are performed studying the realignment of the director field when applying a voltage difference over the liquid crystal cell. In particular, we study how the relative strength of dissipative versus inertial forces influence the time scales of the transition between the initial configuration and the electrostatic equilibrium state.

The almost-sure existence of a polymer probability in the infinite volume limit is readily obtained under general conditions of weak disorder from standard theory on multiplicative cascades or branching random walks. However, speculations in the case of strong disorder have been mixed. In this note existence of an infinite volume probability is established at critical strong disorder for which one has convergence in probability. Some calculations in support of a specific formula for the almost-sure asymptotic variance of the polymer path under strong disorder are also provided.
