This systematic literature review aimed to provide an overview of the characteristics and methods used in studies applying the disability-adjusted life years (DALY) concept for infectious diseases within European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA)/European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and the United Kingdom. Electronic databases and grey literature were searched for articles reporting the assessment of DALY and its components. We considered studies in which researchers performed DALY calculations using primary epidemiological data input sources. We screened 3053 studies of which 2948 were excluded and 105 studies met our inclusion criteria. Of these studies, 22 were multi-country and 83 were single-country studies, of which 46 were from the Netherlands. Food- and water-borne diseases were the most frequently studied infectious diseases. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of burden of infectious disease studies was 1.6 times higher compared to that published between 2000 and 2014. Almost all studies (97%) estimated DALYs based on the incidence- and pathogen-based approach and without social weighting functions; however, there was less methodological consensus with regards to the disability weights and life tables that were applied. The number of burden of infectious disease studies undertaken across Europe has increased over time. Development and use of guidelines will promote performing burden of infectious disease studies and facilitate comparability of the results.
Characterizing neurocognitive endophenotypes of mental illnesses (MIs) could be useful for identifying at-risk individuals, increasing early diagnosis, improving disease subtyping, and proposing therapeutic strategies to reduce the negative effects of the symptoms, in addition to serving as a scientific basis to unravel the physiopathology of the disease. However, a standardized algorithm to determine cognitive endophenotypes has not yet been developed. The main objective of this study was to present a method for the identification of endophenotypes in MI research.
Methods
For this purpose, a 14-expert working group used a scoping review methodology and designed a method that includes a scoring template with five criteria and indicators, a strategy for their verification, and a decision tree.
Conclusions
This work is ongoing since it is necessary to obtain external validation of the applicability of the method in future research.
To conduct international comparisons of self-reports, collateral reports, and cross-informant agreement regarding older adult psychopathology.
Participants:
We compared self-ratings of problems (e.g. I cry a lot) and personal strengths (e.g. I like to help others) for 10,686 adults aged 60–102 years from 19 societies and collateral ratings for 7,065 of these adults from 12 societies.
Measurements:
Data were obtained via the Older Adult Self-Report (OASR) and the Older Adult Behavior Checklist (OABCL; Achenbach et al., 2004).
Results:
Cronbach’s alphas were .76 (OASR) and .80 (OABCL) averaged across societies. Across societies, 27 of the 30 problem items with the highest mean ratings and 28 of the 30 items with the lowest mean ratings were the same on the OASR and the OABCL. Q correlations between the means of the 0–1–2 ratings for the 113 problem items averaged across all pairs of societies yielded means of .77 (OASR) and .78 (OABCL). For the OASR and OABCL, respectively, analyses of variance (ANOVAs) yielded effect sizes (ESs) for society of 15% and 18% for Total Problems and 42% and 31% for Personal Strengths, respectively. For 5,584 cross-informant dyads in 12 societies, cross-informant correlations averaged across societies were .68 for Total Problems and .58 for Personal Strengths. Mixed-model ANOVAs yielded large effects for society on both Total Problems (ES = 17%) and Personal Strengths (ES = 36%).
Conclusions:
The OASR and OABCL are efficient, low-cost, easily administered mental health assessments that can be used internationally to screen for many problems and strengths.
The Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (BSDS) is widely validated and used as a screening tool for bipolar disorder. However, there is no BSDS validated version for its use in Mexican population. The aim of the present study was to examine the BSDS diagnostic capacity, and to evaluate its criterion validity and internal consistency for its use in Mexican psychiatric patients. We recruited 200 patients who attended the psychiatric outpatient service of a Mental Health Specialized Hospital and were screened for bipolar disorder using BSDS. To determine the cut-off point, sensitivity and specificity, we used the SCID–I diagnosis as the gold standard in 100 participants with bipolar disorder and 100 with major depression. Internal consistency according to Cronbach’s coefficient alpha was .81. The area under ROC curve for the overall discriminability of BSDS against the criterion of SCID–I for bipolar disorder was .90. Finally, a cut-off value of 12 reached the most stable sensitivity and specificity, with predictive powers higher than .80. In conclusion, the properties of the scale including internal consistency, sensitivity and specificity, make of BSDS a valuable instrument for screening bipolar disorder in Mexican psychiatric population.
Background and Aims: As there are known risks of retraumatization through bereavement crisis interventions, we tailored a new intervention lowering the degree of direct emotional activation. However, we need some evidence on the effects of depression and psychotraumatic symptoms between 1 and 6 months after a loss. Method: We conducted a randomized controlled trial with two groups: control group (n = 18) and experimental group (n = 11) in two assessments (1 and 6 months after loss); both included a semi-structured interview (Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised–IES-R). The experimental group had a cognitive-narrative program with four sessions: recalling; cognitive and emotional subjectivization; metaphorization; and projecting sessions. Results: Participants in the experimental and control groups have lower levels of depression and traumatic stress 6 months after a loss. Statistically significant results in emotional numbing IES-R sub-scale are observed. Conclusions: A brief narrative-based cost-effective intervention has a positive effect on depression, controlling the traumatic stress and time after a loss.
This contribution presents the first description of crinoids from western margin of Parnaíba Basin. It also presents their first description in the Pimenteira Formation (Devonian of the Parnaíba Basin, state of Tocantins, Brazil). The material is represented by hundreds of columnals, pluricolumnals, as well as isolated calyx plates. Columnal and pluricolumnal morphology allowed the identification of Laudonomphalus aff. L. tuberosus, and Exaesiodiscus dimerocrinosus n. sp. Based upon calyx plate morphology a new Rhodocrinitidae species was erected, Monstrocrinus incognitus n. sp. The genera Exaesiodiscus, Laudonomphalus, and Monstrocrinus were previously described from the Devonian of Amazonas Basin. Exaesiodiscus dimerocrinosus is also identified from the northwest margin of Paraná Basin. The Monstrocrinus occurrence is rare in the Middle Devonian, until now known in Germany, Spain, and Algeria Lower Devonian (upper Emsian) and only in northern Brazil in the Middle Devonian (Eifelian.) These facts provide valuable arguments for paleogeographic interpretations regarding the pattern of distribution of invertebrates in this region of Gondwana and suggest potential migration routes in northern Gondwana during the Devonian.
The purpose of this note is to introduce a method for proving the non-existence of rationalpoints on a coarse moduli space $X$ of abelian varieties over a given number field $K$ in cases where the moduli problem is not fine and points in $X\left( K \right)$ may not be represented by an abelian variety (with additional structure) admitting a model over the field $K$. This is typically the case when the abelian varieties that are being classified have even dimension. The main idea, inspired by the work of Ellenberg and Skinner on the modularity of $\mathbb{Q}$-curves, is that one may still attach a Galois representation of $\text{Gal}\left( \bar{K},\,K \right)$ with values in the quotient group $\text{GL}\left( {{T}_{\ell }}\left( A \right) \right)/\,\text{Aut}\left( A \right)$ to a point $P\,=\,\left[ A \right]\,\in \,X\left( K \right)$ represented by an abelian variety $A/\bar{K}$, provided $\text{Aut}\left( A \right)$ lies in the centre of $\text{GL}\left( {{T}_{\ell }}\left( A \right) \right)$. We exemplify our method in the cases where $X$ is a Shimura curve over an imaginary quadratic field or an Atkin–Lehner quotient over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotics that have a beneficial effect on human health by promoting the growth of probiotic bacteria in the gut. GOS are commonly produced from lactose in an enzymatic reaction catalysed by β-galactosidase, named transglycosylation. Lactose is the main constituent of whey permeate (WP), normally wasted output from the cheese industry. Therefore, the main goal of this work was to optimise the synthesis of GOS in WP using β-galatosidase from Aspergillus oryzaea. WP and whey permeate enzymatically treated (WP-GOS) were used as culture media of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v. Lb. plantarum 299v attained the stationary phase in approximately 16 h, reaching 3·6 and 4·1×108 CFU/ml in WP and WP-GOS, respectively. The in situ synthesised GOS were not consumed during growth. No significant differences were observed in the growth kinetics of microorganisms in both media. After fermentation, microorganisms were dehydrated by freeze-drying and spray-drying and stored. The recovery of microorganisms after fermentation, dehydration and storage at 4 °C for at least 120 d was above 108 CFU/g. These studies demonstrated that WP is an appropriate substrate for the synthesis of GOS and the obtained product is also adequate as culture medium of Lb. plantarum 299v. The coexistence of GOS and dehydrated viable probiotic microorganisms, prepared using an effluent as raw material, represents the main achievement of this work, with potential impact in the development of functional foods.
The aim of this work was to update the validation of the Social Anxiety Screening Scale (SASS/EDAS) in a sample of Spanish adolescents. To achieve this, one study with a sample of 1489 students in secondary education, of ages 14 to 17 years, were carried out. The psychometric properties of EDAS were examined through confirmatory factor analysis, reliability (Cronbach's alpha), temporal stability (test-retest), and concurrent criterion validity. The results supported the three-independent-factor structure (avoidance, distress and interference), that showed best fit indices compared to alternative models. They also showed that the scores of participants on EDAS scales were reliable in terms of internal consistency (α > .80) and moderately reliable concerning temporal stability (r = .48-.60) over a five-week period. The correlations between the EDAS factors and other social anxiety measures were positive and significant. Data provide empirical evidence of the estimation of reliability and validity of this scale. Future work should extend the validation of the EDAS in clinical samples.
The present chapter examines what Brazil's so-called leftist governments have done right for the development of the country. It seeks to identify the principal policy issues and decisions of the Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administrations from 1994 until the middle of 2008. Our main argument is that a new pattern of capital accumulation that was beginning to be established by the Cardoso government has been extended and consolidated under the Lula da Silva administration. At the same time, a new set of social policies, particularly programs for the very poor, were implemented by the Cardoso government and have been expanded and deepened under the Lula administration. In other words, a significant change in Brazil's social policy strategy (Draibe 2003) that had been initiated between 1996 and 2002 was intensified and strengthened between 2003–08.
Our purpose in this chapter is to show that these new social and economic tendencies have shaped the most important priorities of government action and state intervention from 2003 until now, with three principal results: First, the government's actual agenda has diverged in key ways from the program presented in 2002 by Lula da Silva's political coalition in the campaign for the national elections of that year. The electoral platform of the Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores – PT) reflected long-standing party goals, but the government's policy approach has differed significantly from that platform.
Thus far, little has been written concerning echocardiographic identification of the oblique vein of the left atrium, or Marshall’s vein. There is much discussion, nonetheless, on the potential significance of the vein, or its ligamentous remnant, as an arrhythmic substrate. We describe here four patients in whom transthoracic echocardiography revealed a venous structure protruding within the cavity of the left atrium. We discuss the possibility that these structures represent Marshall’s vein, albeit probably as part of a persistent left superior caval vein.
In combinatorial optimization, a popular approach to NP-hard problems is the design of approximation algorithms. These algorithms typically run in polynomial time and are guaranteed to produce a solution which is within a known multiplicative factor of optimal. Unfortunately, the known factor is often known to be large in pathological instances. Conventional wisdom holds that, in practice, approximation algorithms will produce solutions closer to optimal than their proven guarantees. In this paper, we use the rigorous-analysis-of-heuristics framework to investigate this conventional wisdom.
We analyse the performance of three related approximation algorithms for the uncapacitated facility location problem (from Jain, Mahdian, Markakis, Saberi and Vazirani (2003) and Mahdian, Ye and Zhang (2002)) when each is applied to an instances created by placing n points uniformly at random in the unit square. We find that, with high probability, these 3 algorithms do not find asymptotically optimal solutions, and, also with high probability, a simple plane partitioning heuristic does find an asymptotically optimal solution.
We describe the findings in a six-year-old girl who presented with signs of left atrioventricular valvar insufficiency. The echocardiogram showed a common atrioventricular junction, intact atrial and ventricular septal structures. At surgery, the left-sided atrioventricular valve was found to be tri-foliate, and corrected by valvoplasty. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of atrioventricular septal defect with common atrioventricular junction and intact septal structures diagnosed during life.
Central Cantor sets form a class of symmetric Cantor sets of the realline. Here we give a complete characterization of the $C^{k +\alpha}$ regularityof these Cantor sets.We also give a classification of central Cantor sets up to global and localdiffeomorphisms. Examples of central Cantor sets with special dynamicaland measure-theoretical properties are also provided.Finally, we calculate the fractal dimensions of an arbitrary central Cantorset.
