The objective of this paper is to analyse the effects of three different stocking densities on the production, stress and fear parameters of female broilers during a 46-day production period. Chickens were randomly distributed among nine floor pens in groups of 30 broilers with different space allowances for each treatment; namely eight, 20 and 30 chicks m−2. Chicken growth rate was monitored from day eleven to 46 and indicators of stress, including haematocrit, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio and concentrations of plasma corticosterone, as well as tonic immobility, were measured on days 22 and 46. On day 46, the incidence of foot and skin lesions was assessed, and stress was induced to analyse the response of broilers to each stocking density. High stocking densities cause acute stress in broilers; the effects of low and intermediate stocking densities, however, are not so evident, particularly in relation to tonic immobility and response to acute stress.
Water Fountains (WFs), located between the AGB and PN phases of stellar evolution, may provide significant clues on the shaping process of PNe. We present new VLA observations of the WF candidates OH 16.3-3.0 and IRAS 19356+0754. We detect H2O and OH maser and radio continuum emission towards OH 16.3-3.0. We suggest that the OH maser emission of OH 16.3-3.0 is associated with an aspherical circumstellar envelope due to its spatio-kinematics and peculiar spectral profile. We could not confirm the candidates as bona fide WFs because of the narrow velocity spread (OH 16.3-3.0) or non-detection (IRAS 19356+0754) of H2O maser emission. Further monitoring could help to discern their nature.
Spectacular immigration enforcement—large-scale, highly-publicized immigration enforcement efforts in concentrated geographic spaces—plays an important role in the maintenance of the racial order of the United States and of the global region that it dominates. These enforcement efforts, like prison walls and border walls, act as high-visibility markers of socio-political exclusion and inclusion. Spectacular immigration enforcement has a direct, material effect: through these efforts, officials signal the condition of deportability to immigrant workers without significantly undercutting the industry’s labor supply. But they also have a more diffuse effect on the structure and understanding of power and of belonging. By focusing on spectacular immigration enforcement efforts at the site of animal slaughter, this chapter sheds light on how immigrant deportability is facilitated by and reinforces structural racism. It also underscores the salience of race in shaping how people see – or fail to see – the exercise of state and private violence.
The DSM-5 defines psychomotor agitation as excessive motor activity associated with a feeling of inner tension. The activity is usually nonproductive and repetitious and consists of behaviors such as pacing, fidgeting, wringing of the hands, pulling of clothes, and inability to sit still. This kind of behavoir occurs in up to 25% of psychiatrics patients who consult in emergency medical services.
Objective
The main objective was to determine the efficacy of loxapine inhalation powder in acute agitation.
Methods
Ten agitated psychiatric patients scored Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale – Excited Component (P aNSS-EC) baseline and ten minutes after the administration ofaD aSUVE®.
Results
The efficacy of loxapine 10 mg in the acute treatment of agitation was established in a short-term (10 minutes).
Conclusions
Loxapine is the first and only orally inhaled medication for the acute treatment of agitation associated with psychiatrics disorders, which is a tool easy-to-use in emergency medical services.

The resection of a subaortic membrane remains far from a curative operation. We sought to examine factors associated with reoperation and the degree of aortic valve regurgitation as a potential long-term source for reoperation.
Methods:
All patients who underwent resection of an isolated subaortic membrane between 1995 and 2018 were included. Patients who underwent other procedures were excluded. Paired categorical data were compared using McNemar’s test. Univariate time-to-event analyses were performed using Kaplan–Meier methods with log-rank tests for categorical variables and univariate Cox models for continuous variables.
Results:
A total of 84 patients (median age 6.6, 31% females) underwent resection of isolated subaortic membrane. At a median follow-up of 9.3 years (interquartile range 0.6–22.5), 12 (14%) patients required one reoperation and 1 patient required two reoperations. Median time to first reoperation was 4.6 years. The degree of aortic valve regurgitation improved post-operatively from pre-operatively (p = 0.0007); however, the degree of aortic valve regurgitation worsened over the course of follow-up (p = 0.010) to equivalence with pre-operative aortic valve regurgitation (p = 0.18). Performance of a septal myectomy was associated with longer freedom from reoperation (p = 0.004).
Conclusions:
In patients with isolated subaortic membranes, performance of a septal myectomy can minimise risk for reoperation. Patients should be serially monitored for degradation of the aortic valve, even if aortic regurgitation is not present post-operatively.
TAOS II is a next-generation occultation survey with the goal of measuring the size distribution of the small end of the Kuiper Belt (objects with diameters 0.5–30 km). Such objects have magnitudes r > 30, and are thus undetectable by direct imaging. The project will operate three telescopes at San Pedro Mártir Observatory in Baja California, México. Each telescope will be equipped with a custom-built camera comprised of a focal-plane array of CMOS imagers. The cameras will be capable of reading out image data from 10,000 stars at a cadence of 20 Hz. The telescopes will monitor the same set of stars simultaneously to search for coincident occultation detections, thus minimising the false-positive rate. This talk described the project, and reported on the progress of the development of the survey infrastructure.
The current study sought to examine Guatemalan adolescents’ consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), identify which individual-level characteristics are associated with SSB consumption and describe school characteristics that may influence students’ SSB consumption.
Design
Within this observational pilot study, a questionnaire was used to assess students’ consumption of three varieties of SSB (soft drinks, energy drinks, sweetened coffees/teas), as well as a variety of sociodemographic and behavioural characteristics. We collected built environment data to examine aspects of the school food environment. We developed Poisson regression models for each SSB variety and used descriptive analyses to characterize the sample.

Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Subjects
Guatemalan adolescents (n 1042) from four (two public, two private) secondary schools.
Results
Built environment data revealed that students from the two public schools lacked access to water fountains/coolers. The SSB industry had a presence in the schools through advertisements, sponsored food kiosks and products available for sale. Common correlates of SSB consumption included school type, sedentary behaviour, frequency of purchasing lunch in the cafeteria, and frequency of purchasing snacks from vending machines in school and off school property.
Conclusions
Guatemalan adolescents frequently consume SSB, which may be encouraged by aspects of the school environment. Schools represent a viable setting for equitable population health interventions designed to reduce SSB consumption, including increasing access to clean drinking-water, reducing access to SSB, restricting SSB marketing and greater enforcement of existing food policies.
During the Middle Paleolithic period, carnivores and hominids periodically occupied the same areas at different times and each predator generated significant palimpsests, rendering difficult their archaeological interpretation. Teixoneres Cave, a carnivore den site, located in the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, demonstrates that it is possible to overcome these problems by using a careful strategy in selecting samples for radiocarbon dating, in order to produce an accurate chronology of the site in question and certainly attest the human occupation.
We present the design of a stellar spectropolarimeter to measure the magnetic field of point sources. The polarization module interfaces the Boller and Chivens (B&Ch) intermediate-low resolution (R ~ 500 − 4000) spectrograph to the 2.1-m telescope of the San Pedro Martir National Astronomical Observatory in Mexico. The module uses a Savart plate to split the beam into two orthogonal states of polarization and a quarter (half) waveplate to measure circular (linear) polarization. The module is mounted to the telescope and it feeds the spectrograph through a set of four fibers, two for the polarized star images and two for the spectrograph calibration lamp. The instrument will be capable of measuring polarization in spectral lines to determine the longitudinal and transversal fields in magnetic stars.
This article presents an empirical measurement invariance study in the substantive area of satisfaction evaluation in training programs. Specifically, it (I) provides an empirical solution to the lack of explicit measurement models of satisfaction scales, offering a way of analyzing and operationalizing the substantive theoretical dimensions; (II) outlines and discusses the analytical consequences of considering the effects of categorizing supposedly continuous variables, which are not usually taken into account; (III) presents empirical results from a measurement invariance study based on 5,272 participants’ responses to a training satisfaction questionnaire in three different organizations and in two different training methods, taking into account the factor structure of the measured construct and the ordinal nature of the recorded data; and (IV) describes the substantive implications in the area of training satisfaction evaluation, such as the usefulness of the training satisfaction questionnaire to measure satisfaction in different organizations and different training methods. It also discusses further research based on these findings.
Thin films of SnO2 were prepared via wet chemical method and deposited by dip-coating on glass substrate. The annealing temperatures of the samples were 300, 400, 500 and 600o C, respectively. Water vapor sensor responses were measured and the experimental results are tested using the Freundlich model. The better water vapor sensitivities were obtained for annealing temperatures of 500 and 600oC, respectively. The samples were characterized morphological and structurally by SEM, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The fringes features in the ultraviolet-visible region indicate films thickness around 370 nm. The results are discussed in terms of the fine grain size of the samples.
While little is known about hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys imbricata in the eastern Pacific Ocean, available information suggests that the population has declined substantially in recent decades and could be near extirpation in the region. To evaluate the current status of the population more effectively and to determine the feasibility of recovery efforts, a workshop of regional marine turtle specialists was held in June 2008 in Los Cóbanos, El Salvador. An international working group, Iniciativa Carey del Pacífico Oriental (ICAPO; Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative in English), was established to consolidate information, promote conservation projects and raise awareness about the species. We present information derived from the workshop and compiled by the ICAPO working group since that time. Considering only records from 1 January 2007 to 31 May 2009 it appears that El Salvador hosts the majority of known hawksbill turtle nesting activity in the eastern Pacific, with 79.6% (n = 430) of all nesting observation records, and Mexico hosts the majority of records of hawksbill turtles at sea, with 60.3% (n = 44) of all in-water observation records. Although current abundance is very low, the pervasiveness of the species in the region suggests potential for conservation and recovery. Despite a historical paucity of research focusing on this population, the relatively large and steadily increasing number of records as a result of concerted efforts demonstrates the viability of the ICAPO network as an instrument to promote conservation of this species in the eastern Pacific.
This study examines the ability of an assay which measures the amount of a schistosome specific antigen (CAA) in the host circulation to reliably reflect relative worm burden. Mice were infected with 5 species of schistosome with a range of infection dose. The levels of serum CAA increased during schistosome maturation. In all species tested CAA levels correlated well with adult worm burden once the parasites achieved sexual maturity and remained relatively stable during the establishment of egg production. The amount of CAA produced varied between species but within each species CAA levels were proportional to worm numbers: no density-dependent effects on CAA levels were observed even when mice carried worm burdens that were very large relative to host size. T-cell deprivation of the host had no effect on the CAA/worm burden relationship in either Schistosoma mansoni or S. haematobium infections and the CAA equilibrium was unaltered in intact mice when reduction of worm fecundity occurred. These data support the use of the CAA as an accurate and robust estimate of relative schistosome burden in man.
A genomic library of Meloidogyne incognita Race 1 has been prepared in the bacteriophage λgt10 and screened for specific DNA sequences by hybridization with radio-isotope labelled total genomic DNA from a number of Meloidogyne species. One clone isolated (MR1#15), although not totally species specific, clearly showed preferential hybridization to M. incognita. Following subcloning and sequencing of the 255 bp insert, four stretches of the sequence corresponding to oligonucleotides of approximately equal length (~60 bp) were synthesized and examined for specificity. One of them, MR1#15.2, showed the necessary specificity to be used as a diagnostic tool.
Conical microducts and minithrottles can be used to accelerate micropellets of fusionable fuel up to very high speeds (∼108 cm/s). The central collision of two pellets flying in opposite directions can produce a hot plasma where fusion reactions are triggered. The main drawback of this scheme is the short confinement time provided by the external guide tube (throttle). To obtain high yield, an extra force of confinement is advisable. In this paper, the performance of fuel implosions within conical targets and the effect of ultrashort magnetic fields and pinch forces are analyzed. Although very high currents are needed to stretch the confinement time, modern technologies based on pulse-power machines and fast discharges induced by ultrashort lasers can provide a solution to this problem.
To compare the effectiveness for prevention of central venous and arterial catheter colonization of 3 skin antisepsis with 1 of 3 antiseptic solutions: 10% aqueous povidone iodine (aqueous PI), 2% aqueous chlorhexidine gluconate (aqueous CG), and 0.5% alcoholic chlorhexidine gluconate (alcoholic CG).
Design.
Prospective, randomized controlled trial.
Setting.
Intensive care unit in a teaching hospital.
Methods.
Patients were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 skin antisepsis groups. The distal tips of catheters were semiquantitatively cultured when the catheters were no longer necessary or if there was a suspicion of catheter-related infection. Rates of catheter colonization, catheter-related sepsis, and catheter-related bacteremia were compared among the 3 groups.
Results.
A total of 631 catheters were included in the study (194 from the aqueous PI group, 211 from the aqueous CG group, and 226 from the alcoholic CG group). The incidence of catheter colonization was significantly lower in the alcoholic CG than in the aqueous PI group (14.2% vs 24.7%; relative risk, 0.5 [95% confidence interval, 0.3-0.8; P < .01]); it was also significantly lower in the aqueous CG group than in the aqueous PI group (16.1 % vs 24.7%; relative risk, 0.6 [95% confidence interval, 0.4-0.9; P = .03]). There were no significant differences between the aqueous CG and the alcoholic CG groups. Incidences of catheter-related bacteremia were similar for all 3 groups. The aqueous and alcoholic CG solutions were superior to the aqueous PI solution in preventing catheter colonization due to gram-positive bacteria.
Conclusions.
The aqueous and alcoholic CG solutions for cutaneous antisepsis were similarly effective in preventing colonization of central venous catheters and arterial catheters. Both had significantly lower incidences of colonization than did the aqueous PI solution; this effect seems to be related to the CG solutions' more efficacious prevention of colonization with gram-positive bacteria.
The energy of a unit vector field X on a closed Riemannian manifold M is defined as the energy of the section into T1M determined by X. For odd-dimensional spheres, the energy functional has an infimum for each dimension 2k+1 which is not attained by any non-singular vector field for k>1. For k=1, Hopf vector fields are the unique minima. In this paper we show that for any closed Riemannian manifold, the energy of a frame defined on the manifold, possibly except on a finite subset, admits a lower bound in terms of the total scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular, for odd-dimensional spheres this lower bound is attained by a family of frames defined on the sphere minus one point and consisting of vector fields parallel along geodesics.
We have compiled a large number of optical spectra of cool stars taken with different high-resolution echelle spectrographs (R ≃ 40 000). Many of those are available as spectral libraries (Montes et al. 1997, 1998, 1999, <http://www.ucm.es/info/Astrof/invest/actividad/spectra.html)>.
