Germplasm resources are the foundation for improving crop varieties and a strategic asset for global food security. They also advance plant breeding, agricultural biotechnology and the production of essential agricultural goods. To assess the distribution, diversity and conservation status of food crop germplasm in the Hainan Province, China, we conducted a detailed survey of the Hainan Island. Between 2017 and 2022, we collected 330 food crop germplasm resources, encompassing 16 cereal crops, including rice, maize, sweet potato. The collected germplasm resources exhibited traits of high resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses, including common diseases and drought stress, as well as superior quality and adaptability to poor soil conditions such as sandy land. However, challenges such as low productivity and hybrid degradation were identified. These resources were primarily found in Haikou City, Baisha County, Danzhou City, Wuzhishan City and Sanya City. Additionally, we collected several ancient local varieties and endangered germplasm resources such as ‘Jiezi rice’ and ‘Wuzhishan maize’. This study serves as a reference for the conservation, development and utilization of local food crop germplasm resources in Hainan Province and lays the foundation for breeding and developing new varieties.
We aimed to validate in-body bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measures with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as reference and describe the body composition (BC) profiling of Tibetan adults.
Design:
This cross-sectional study included 855 participants (391 men and 464 women). Correlation and Bland–Altman analyses were performed for method agreement of in-body BIA and DXA. BC were described by obesity and metabolic status.
Setting:
In-body BIA and DXA have not been employed to characterise the BC of the Tibetan population living in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.
Participants:
A total of 855 Tibetan adults, including 391 men and 464 women, were enrolled in the study.
Results:
Concordance correlation coefficient for total fat mass (FM) and total lean mass (LM) between in-body BIA and DXA were 0·91 and 0·89. The bias of in-body BIA for percentages of total FM and total LM was 0·91 % (2·46 %) and –1·74 % (–2·80 %) compared with DXA, respectively. Absolute limits of agreement were wider for total FM in obese men and women and for total LM in overweight men than their counterparts. Gradience in the distribution of total and regional FM content was observed across different BMI categories and its combinations with waist circumference and metabolic status.
Conclusions:
In-body BIA and DXA provided overall good agreement at the group level in Tibetan adults, but the agreement was inferior in participants being overweight or obese.
Insufficient sample sizes threatened the fidelity of the primary research trials. Even if the research group recruits a sufficient sample size, the sample may lack diversity, reducing the generalizability of the results of the study. Evaluating the effectiveness of online advertising platforms (e.g., Facebook & Google Ads) versus traditional recruitment methods (e.g., flyers, clinical participation) is essential.
Methods:
Patients were recruited through email, electronic direct message, paper advertisements, and word-of-mouth advertisement (traditional) or through Google Ads and Facebook Ads (advertising) for a longitudinal study on monitoring COVID-19 using wearable devices. Participants were asked to wear a smart watch-like wearable device for ∼ 24 hours per day and complete daily surveys.
Results:
The initiation conversion rate (ICR, impressions to pre-screen ratio) was better for traditional recruitment (24.14) than for Google Ads, 28.47 ([0.80, 0.88]; p << 0.001). The consent conversion rate (CCR, impressions to consent ratio) was also higher for traditional recruitment (66.54) than for Google Ads, 2961.20 ([0.015, 0.030]; p << 0.001). Participants recruited through recommendations or by paper flier were more likely to participate initially (Χ2 = 23.65; p < 0.005). Clinical recruitment led to more self-reporting white participants, while other methods yielded great diversity (Χ2 = 231.47; p << 0.001).
Conclusions:
While Google Ads target users based on keywords, they do not necessarily improve participation. However, our findings are based on a single study with specific recruitment strategies and participant demographics. Further research is needed to assess the generalizability of these findings across different study designs and populations.
Research on the association between the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and hyperuricaemia (HUA) is scarce, and whether the association differs by sex is unclear. This research aimed to explore sex-specific associations between CVAI and HUA and to compare CVAI’s predictive performance with other adiposity indices using data from 22 171 adults (30–79 years) in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort study (Chongqing region). The prevalence of HUA was 20·9 % in men and 9·7 % in women. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were utilised to assess the adjusted OR and 95 % CI. After multivariable adjustment, CVAI was associated with HUA in men (OR Q4 v. Q1 = 3·31, 95 % CI 2·73, 4·03) and women (OR Q4 v. Q1 = 7·20, 95 % CI 5·12, 10·12). Moreover, significant interactions were observed between BMI and CVAI on HUA in both sexes (all Pinteraction < 0·001), with the strongest associations in those with BMI < 24·0 kg/m2. The OR (95 % CI) across different BMI groups (< 24·0, 24·0–27·9, ≥ 28·0 kg/m²) were 1·87 (1·63, 2·13), 1·65 (1·48, 1·85) and 1·30 (1·14, 1·49) for men and 2·76 (2·18, 3·51), 2·46 (1·98, 3·07) and 1·87 (1·47, 2·39) for women, respectively. Additionally, CVAI showed satisfactory predictive performance for HUA in women, with the largest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0·735, but not in men (0·660). These findings suggest a close association between CVAI and HUA, particularly pronounced in those with BMI < 24·0 kg/m², and a stronger association in women than in men.
Substantial changes resulting from the interaction of environmental and dietary factors contribute to an increased risk of obesity, while their specific associations with obesity remain unclear. We identified inflammation-related dietary patterns (DP) and explored their associations with obesity among urbanised Tibetan adults under significant environmental and dietary changes. Totally, 1826 subjects from the suburbs of Golmud City were enrolled in an open cohort study, of which 514 were followed up. Height, weight and waist circumference were used to define overweight and obesity. DP were derived using reduced rank regression with forty-one food groups as predictors and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and prognostic nutritional index as inflammatory response variables. Altitude was classified as high or ultra-high. Two DP were extracted. DP-1 was characterised by having high consumptions of sugar-sweetened beverages, savoury snacks, and poultry and a low intake of tsamba. DP-2 had high intakes of poultry, pork, animal offal, and fruits and a low intake of butter tea. Participants in the highest tertiles (T3) of DP had increased risks of overweight and obesity (DP-1: OR = 1·37, 95 % CI 1·07, 1·77; DP-2: OR = 1·48, 95 % CI 1·18, 1·85) than those in the lowest tertiles (T1). Participants in T3 of DP-2 had an increased risk of central obesity (OR = 2·25, 95 % CI 1·49, 3·39) than those in T1. The positive association of DP-1 with overweight and obesity was only significant at high altitudes, while no similar effect was observed for DP-2. Inflammation-related DP were associated with increased risks of overweight and/or obesity.
Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) is one of the world’s resilient upland weeds, primarily spreading through its tubers. Its emergence in rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields has been increasing, likely due to changing paddy-farming practices. This study aimed to investigate how C. rotundus, an upland weed, can withstand soil flooding and become a problematic weed in rice fields. The first comparative analysis focused on the survival and recovery characteristics of growing and mature tubers of C. rotundus exposed to soil-flooding conditions. Notably, mature tubers exhibited significant survival and recovery abilities in these environments. Based on this observation, further investigation was carried out to explore the morphological structure, nonstructural carbohydrates, and respiratory mechanisms of mature tubers in response to prolonged soil flooding. Over time, the mature tubers did not form aerenchyma but instead gradually accumulated lignified sclerenchymal fibers, with lignin content also increasing. After 90 d, the lignified sclerenchymal fibers and lignin contents were 4.0 and 1.1 times higher than those in the no soil-flooding treatment. Concurrently, soluble sugar content decreased while starch content increased, providing energy storage, and alcohol dehydrogenase activity rose to support anaerobic respiration via alcohol fermentation. These results indicated that mature tubers survived in soil-flooding conditions by adopting a low-oxygen quiescence strategy, which involves morphological adaptations through the development of lignified sclerenchymal fibers, increased starch reserves for energy storage, and enhanced anaerobic respiration. This mechanism likely underpins the flooding tolerance of mature C. rotundus tubers, allowing them to endure unfavorable conditions and subsequently germinate and grow once flooding subsides. This study provides a preliminary explanation of the mechanism by which mature tubers of C. rotundus from the upland areas confer flooding tolerance, shedding light on the reasons behind this weed’s increasing presence in rice fields.
Studies on obesity and risk factors from a life-course perspective among residents in the Tibet Plateau with recent economic growth and increasing obesity are important and urgently needed. The birth cohort in this area provides a unique opportunity to examine the association between maternal dietary practice and neonatal obesity. The study aims to detect the prevalence of obesity among neonates, associated with maternal diet and other factors, supporting life-course strategies for obesity control. A cohort of pregnant women was enrolled in Tibet Plateau and followed till childbirth. Dietary practice during pregnancy was assessed using the Chinese FFQ – Tibet Plateau version, food items and other variables were associated with the risk for obesity of neonates followed by logistic regression, classification and regression trees (CART) and random forest. Of the total 1226 mother–neonate pairs, 40·5 % were Tibetan and 5·4 % of neonates with obesity. Consuming fruits as a protective factor for obesity of neonates with OR (95 % CI) = 0·61 (0·43, 0·87) from logistic regression; as well as OR = 0·20 (0·12, 0·35) for consuming fruits (≥ weekly) from CART. Removing fruit consumption to avoid overshadowing effects of other factors, the following were influential from CART: maternal education (more than middle school, OR = 0·22 (0·13, 0·37)) and consumption of Tibetan food (daily, OR = 3·44 (2·08, 5·69). Obesity among neonates is prevalent in the study population. Promoting healthy diets during pregnancy and strengthening maternal education should be part of the life-course strategies for obesity control.
This work presents a detailed taxonomic study on organic-walled microfossils from the Ediacaran Sete Lagoas Formation (Bambuí Group) at the Barreiro section in the Januária area of the São Francisco basin, Brazil. Seven species are described, including Siphonophycus robustum (Schopf, 1968), Ghoshia januarensis new species, Leiosphaeridia crassa (Naumova, 1949), Leiosphaeridia jacutica (Timofeev, 1966), Leiosphaeridia minutissima (Naumova, 1949), Leiosphaeridia tenuissima Eisenack, 1958, and Germinosphaera bispinosa Mikhailova, 1986. These taxa are recovered for the first time in the Sete Lagoas Formation. They occur abundantly in the lower portion of the studied section, but only Ghoshia januarensis is present in the upper part of the studied section, probably due to environmental or taphonomic changes. Leiosphaeridia species, particularly Leiosphaeridia minutissima, dominate the organic-walled microfossil assemblage. Although most taxa described here have long stratigraphic ranges, they are consistent with a terminal Ediacaran age as inferred from detrital zircon data and tubular fossils (e.g., Cloudina and Corumbella) from the Sete Lagoas Formation.
Previous studies have revealed an association between dietary factors and atopic dermatitis (AD). To explore whether there was a causal relationship between diet and AD, we performed Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis. The dataset of twenty-one dietary factors was obtained from UK Biobank. The dataset for AD was obtained from the publicly available FinnGen consortium. The main research method was the inverse-variance weighting method, which was supplemented by MR‒Egger, weighted median and weighted mode. In addition, sensitivity analysis was performed to ensure the accuracy of the results. The study revealed that beef intake (OR = 0·351; 95 % CI 0·145, 0·847; P = 0·020) and white bread intake (OR = 0·141; 95 % CI 0·030, 0·656; P = 0·012) may be protective factors against AD. There were no causal relationships between AD and any other dietary intake factors. Sensitivity analysis showed that our results were reliable, and no heterogeneity or pleiotropy was found. Therefore, we believe that beef intake may be associated with a reduced risk of AD. Although white bread was significant in the IVW analysis, there was large uncertainty in the results given the wide 95 % CI. Other factors were not associated with AD in this study.
This study assesses the difference in professional attitudes among medical students, both before and after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and identifies the determinants closely associated with it, while providing precise and scientific evidence for implementing precision education on such professional attitudes.
Methods:
A pre-post-like study was conducted among medical students in 31 provinces in mainland China, from March 23, to April 19, 2021.
Results:
The proportion of medical students whose professional attitudes were disturbed after the COVID-19 pandemic, was significantly lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic (χ2 = 15.6216; P < 0.0001). Compared with the “undisturbed -undisturbed” group, the “undisturbed-disturbed” group showed that there was a 1.664-fold risk of professional attitudes disturbed as grade increased, 3.269-fold risk when others suggested they choose a medical career rather than their own desire, and 7.557-fold risk for students with COVID-19 in their family, relatives, or friends; while the “disturbed-undisturbed” group showed that students with internship experience for professional attitudes strengthened was 2.933-fold than those without internship experience.
Conclusions:
The professional attitudes of medical students have been strengthened during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results provide evidence of the importance of education on professional attitudes among medical students during public health emergencies.
Students’ mental health issues have attracted more attention due to the pressure and challenges they experience in today’s society. This study attempts to include the new era sports ideology and politics into the positive influence of college students’ mental health in an effort to better manage the mental health state of college students.
Subjects and Methods
100 college students with psychological anxiety issues were selected as test subjects. 50 college students were assigned to the experimental group and 50 to the control group. The new era sports ideological and political education was provided to the college students in the experimental group during the course of a six-month psychological intervention. The typical personality education approach was employed to students in the control group for a six-month psychological intervention.
Results
The mental health status of the two groups of college students was evaluated and scored according to the anxiety item in the Stanford Acute Stress Response Questionnaire (SASRQ). Compared with the control group, the anxiety of college students in the experimental group was obviously eliminated, and the emotional regulation was very effective. Their comprehensive score was 10 points, and the control group scored 22 points.
Conclusions
College students’ mental health is greatly benefited from the modern incorporation of sports-related political and ideological education into their mental health education.

Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) is a globally distributed noxious weed that poses a significant challenge for control due to its fast and efficient propagation through the tuber, which is the primary reproductive organ. Gibberellic acid (GA3) has proven to be crucial for tuberization in tuberous plants. Therefore, understanding the relationship between GA3 and tuber development and propagation of C. rotundus will provide valuable information for controlling this weed. This study shows that the GA3 content decreases with tuber development, which corresponds to lower expression of bioactive GA3 synthesis genes (CrGA20ox, two CrGA3ox genes) and two upregulated GA3 catabolism genes (CrGA2ox genes), indicating that GA3 is involved in tuber development. Simultaneously, the expression of two CrDELLA genes and CrGID1 declines with tuber growth and decreased GA3, and yeast two-hybrid assays confirm that the GA3 signaling is DELLA-dependent. Furthermore, exogenous application of GA3 markedly reduces the number and the width of tubers and represses the growth of the tuber chain, further confirming the negative impact that GA3 has on tuber development and propagation. Taken together, these results demonstrate that GA3 is involved in tuber development and regulated by the DELLA-dependent pathway in C. rotundus and plays a negative role in tuber development and propagation.
Microbubble emission boiling (MEB), a phenomenon that occurs under highly subcooled boiling conditions, can achieve a high heat flux beyond critical heat flux. MEB has been observed to differ from nucleate boiling and is always accompanied by the emission of microbubbles from an oscillating bubble. The heat transfer mechanism of MEB differs from that of nucleate boiling and remains elusive. In this study, we measure the behaviour of a vapour bubble and its induced liquid flow simultaneously during subcooled boiling using the high-speed two-phase particle image velocimetry method. Different from nucleate boiling, we observe a rapid oscillating flow outside the bubble that constantly attaches on the heating surface in MEB. The spatially and temporally averaged velocity magnitude values under this oscillating flow, and their dependency on liquid subcooling and heat flux, are quantified. Then we derive a scaling law for the heat transfer of MEB as a function of Péclet and Jacob numbers. With such correlations, we suggest that the oscillating flow induced by bubble oscillations is important to MEB, thus elucidating a different heat transport process from nucleate boiling.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) PCR re-positivity after recovering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients (n = 1391) from Guangzhou, China, who had recovered from COVID-19 were recruited between 7 September 2021 and 11 March 2022. Data on epidemiology, symptoms, laboratory test results and treatment were analysed. In this study, 42.7% of recovered patients had re-positive result. Most re-positive patients were asymptomatic, did not have severe comorbidities, and were not contagious. The re-positivity rate was 39%, 46%, 11% and 25% in patients who had received inactivated, mRNA, adenovirus vector and recombinant subunit vaccines, respectively. Seven independent risk factors for testing re-positive were identified, and a predictive model was constructed using these variables. The predictors of re-positivity were COVID-19 vaccination status, previous SARs-CoV-12 infection prior to the most recent episode, renal function, SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM antibody levels and white blood cell count. The predictive model could benefit the control of the spread of COVID-19.
This study is designed to explore the association between dietary betaine intake and risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with coronary artery diseases (CAD). In this cohort study, 1292 patients with CAD were followed up for a median of 9·2 years. Baseline dietary betaine intake was collected using a paper-based semi-quantitative FFQ and assessed according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) database and the data of betaine in common foods. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyse the association between dietary betaine intake and risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. During the follow-up periods, 259 deaths recorded in 1292 participants, of which 167 died of CVD. Patients in the highest tertile of dietary betaine intake had a lower risk of all-cause (P = 0·007) and cardiovascular death (P < 0·001) than those in the lowest tertile after adjusting for age and sex, traditional cardiovascular risk factors and other potential confounders. After further adjusting for plasma methionine metabolites and vitamins, hazard ratio across tertiles of dietary betaine intake were 1·00, 0·84 and 0·72 for all-cause mortality (Pfor trend = 0·124), and 1·00, 0·77 and 0·55 for cardiovascular mortality (Pfor trend = 0·021). Higher dietary betaine intake was associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular death after fully adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors, other potential confounders and plasma methionine metabolites and vitamins. However, the association between dietary betaine intake and risk of all-cause mortality was not statistically significant after further adjusting for plasma methionine metabolites and vitamins.
To investigate the association between folate levels and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk during the whole pregnancy.
Design:
In this retrospective cohort study of pregnant women, serum folate levels were measured before 24 gestational weeks (GW). GDM was diagnosed between 24th and 28th GW based on the criteria of the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups. General linear models were performed to examine the association of serum folate with plasma glucose (i.e. linear regressions) and risk of GDM (i.e. log-binomial regressions) after controlling for confounders. Restricted cubic spline regression was conducted to test the dosage–response relationship between serum folate and the risk of GDM.
Setting:
A sigle, urban hospital in Shanghai, China.
Participants:
A total of 42 478 women who received antenatal care from April 2013 to March 2017 were included.
Results:
Consistent positive associations were observed between serum folate and plasma glucose levels (fasting, 1-h, 2-h). The adjusted relative risks (RR) and 95 % CI of GDM across serum folate quartiles were 1·00 (reference), 1·15 (95 % CI (1·04, 1·26)), 1·40 (95 % CI (1·27, 1·54)) and 1·54 (95 % CI (1·40, 1·69)), respectively (P-for-trend < 0·001). The positive association between serum folate and GDM remained when stratified by vitamin B12 (adequate v. deficient groups) and the GW of serum folate measurement (≤13 GW v. >13 GWs)
Conclusions:
The findings of this study may provide important evidence for the public health and clinical guidelines of pregnancy folate supplementation in terms of GDM prevention.
Saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifers menace multiple coastal areas globally, degrading groundwater quality, which poses an important threat to freshwater supply for agricultural, industrial and domestic utilization. Groundwater over-exploitation used to be commonly recognized as the principle factor causing saltwater intrusion, while sea-level rise, intensified storm surges and precipitation change have grown to become important drivers of factors inducing saltwater intrusion as well. In the context of exacerbated human activities such as groundwater over-exploitation due to the ever-increasing water demand because of population growth and economic and social development, as well as sea-level rise and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and warmer temperatures and changing precipitation patterns and regimes resulting from climate change, the phenomenon of saltwater intrusion worldwide has been seriously aggravated recently. A deeper understanding of the theories and multiple pathways of saltwater intrusion, the commonly-used methods to investigate the extent of saltwater intrusion, as well as numerical approaches to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities and climate change on saltwater intrusion in future are of great importance to mitigate its negative effects.
We aimed to investigate the associations of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)-style diet and Mediterranean-style diet with blood pressure (BP) in less-developed ethnic minority regions (LEMR).
Design:
Cross-sectional study.
Setting:
Dietary intakes were assessed by a validated FFQ. Dietary quality was assessed by the DASH-style diet score and the alternative Mediterranean-style diet (aMED) score. The association between dietary quality and BP was evaluated using multivariate linear regression model. We further examined those associations in subgroups of BP level.
Participants:
A total of 81 433 adults from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study were included in this study.
Results:
In the overall population, compared with the lowest quintile, the highest quintile of DASH-style diet score was negatively associated with systolic BP (SBP) (coefficient –2·78, 95 % CI –3·15, –2·41; Pfor trend < 0·001), while the highest quintile of aMED score had a weaker negative association with SBP (coefficient –1·43, 95 % CI –1·81, –1·05; Pfor trend < 0·001). Both dietary indices also showed a weaker effect on diastolic BP (coefficient for DASH-style diet –1·06, 95 % CI –1·30, –0·82; coefficient for aMED –0·43, 95 % CI –0·68, –0·19). In the subgroup analysis, both dietary indices showed a stronger beneficial effect on SBP in the hypertension group than in either of the other subgroups.
Conclusion:
Our results indicated that the healthy diet originating from Western developed countries can also have beneficial effects on BP in LEMR. DASH-style diet may be a more appropriate recommendation than aMED as part of a dietary strategy to control BP, especially in hypertensive patients.
